S81 SMJHL PT #4 - MVP Due: Sunday, March 16th @ 11:59 PM PST
#31

I decided to go with one forward, one defenseman, and one goalie for my selections. My ballot for the Ideen Fallah Trophy is as follows:

Forward: Mel Guolla of the Kelowna Knights  Knights
Mel Guolla is 3rd in goals among forwards in the SMJHL and is tied for 3rd in points. A lot of people have been picking Josie Cass and Ethan Cross of the Tidal but to me that is a two headed beast instead of an MVP

Defense: Arvinder Singh of the Nevada Battleborn  Battleborn
Arvinder Singh scored 52 points this season while playing for a nevada team that did not produce well offensively scoring 204 times meaning that Arvinder Singh was a factor on the scoresheet for over 25% of Nevada's goals. Arvinder Singh was also a factor on 22 of Nevada's 50 power play goals.

Goalie: Ela Solberg of the Quebec City Citadelles  Citadelles
Ela Solberg to me and many others is the clear top goalie in the league this season leading in save percentage and goals against average as well as goals saved above expected. Ela leads in all of those categories by a sizable margin

All three of the above players are worthy of consideration but my vote for league MVP and the Ideen Fallah trophy is Ela Solberg for a truly dominant season.

MVP is always a tough prediction in any sport.

The easiest choice for my top 3 is Forward Josie Cass of the San Diego Tide. Not only do they lead the league in goals, with 48, but also points with 106. Capping it off, they are also top 5 in assists, and only 5 behind league leader and linemate Ethan Cross. It's safe to say that Josie Cass is an extremely strong contender.

On defense, there is another dynamic duo heading it up in Newfoundland Beserkers, but Big Sweg and Ivan Ivanovitch. Leading almost all major categories together, I'm going to have to give the nod to Ivanovitch. He is 4 goals behind Sweg on 10 less shots, but has 16 more plus/minus, sitting an phenomenal +62.

Finally, for goalie is Matti Brynjarsson in a surprising choice probably. I think this is a classic Hasek vs Brodeur comparison, where Hasek loses out on hardware because Brodeur played for a much stronger team. Great Falls is unfortunately a basement team right now yet across 50 games, Brynjarsson has 4 OTL proving he can will them into position to win. He has 1673 saves, a full 127 more than 2nd place, and has a stellar 0.904 save %, good for 4th in the league. Tacking onto that he has 2 shutouts. I whole heartedly believe that if he was dropped into a contending team, he would be leading the wow stats for all goalies.

My clear cut MVP this season is goaltender Ela Solberg from Quebec City. In a league flooded with goals and offensive production, Solberg has been the perfect opposite reaction to the offensive action. Boasting an impressive 0.921 and a GSAA of 31.67 just give this man the trophy. If they continue on with this output in the crease and can stand on their head when needed, the cup is going to be hard to keep away from QCC. MVP of QCC, MVP of the league.

Some honorable mentions are defensemen Ivan Ivanovitch and Big Sweg putting up massive production offensively but also helping shut down their opponent's goal output lifting the Zerks to a Goal Differintial of +117.

Josie Cass and Ethan Cross absolutely deserve credit in the MVP race as well. If one of these players was on another team, its scary to think of what the other's statline would be. Without Solberg the MVP race would probably be won by one of these two.

My top 3 are as follows:

Josie Cass - When you review the overall spectrum of this player you can see just how impactful they are to both their team and the league. Josie currently leads the league by 3 points while also having a great +/- and a good shooting % too. Conversion rate is huge for any player, and Josie is top of that list. When you're winning games, and contributing at this pace, it's really hard to ignore that obviously. I think Josie should be a clear lock IF it's a skater (F/D) that the award is given to.

Ela Solberg - When we look at goalies, a lot of the time they are overshadowed due to the skaters having insane seasons, but Ela is severely underrated if you do not consider them for the MVP award, in fact I think it would be a crime if not considered. 29 wins on the season and only 7 losses to boot (just over 80% win rate) and leads the league in SV% and GAA. Tack on 4 shutouts and the stat line continues to look more and more impressive. If it were me voting? Ela would have my non-bias vote.

Darby Reznor - A 'black sheep' pick for me but when you talk about MVP, it's about the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER, and usually that in hockey goes to someone who does something impressive, but what is more impressive than someone who is a complete package? Yes, Reznor didn't score over 100 points or anything like that, but with 86 points, Darby also made the top 10 in hits (6th with 152) and also top 10 in powerplay goals (4th with 13). If you feel like voting out of the norm and giving someone a shot who is doing it on both offense and defense, I'd consider Reznor the dark horse here.

I'd currently give the lead slightly to Josie Cass. While I think Ethan Cross has a real chance with 63 assists (a really insane number), the near 50 goals that Josie Cass really separates them from the other competition. It's difficult to really weight things but I think that a on a point scale system. A goal is worth about 0.2 more than an assist. And you add that Josie Cass also had nearly the same number of assists as Ethan Cross. It's really just a matter of time before Josie takes home the hardware. And outside chance is that of Mel Guolla. Looking at the top scorers in the league Josie Cass and Ethan Cross were feeding each other all season long. Same with Hotdog Lunch and Soobin. But of the top point getters of the season. Mel Guolla did it with less help than the other two and finished tied for third with 11 less points than Cass. But overall it's likely going to one of the San Diego Tidal players and likely going to be Cass. Honestly a really good season for those Tidal forwards and they are deserving of praise.

Honestly, in my mind there is really only one option for league MVP, but I'll give you some contenders in each position.

Looking at forwards, I have to look at the duo of Josie Cass and Ethan Cross. These two have been the engine driving San Diego's offense this season - without either one, the Tidal would be significantly lower down the standings. If I have to take one, I'll take Cass, who is leading the league in goals and points.

Defensemen are tougher to evaluate based on stats. Here I'll go for what may be a bit of a surprise pick - Tiny Princess from the Colorado Raptors. Princess has been putting up solid stats on both ends, being 6th in the league for defenseman points and assists (and the 4th highest scorer on their team), while also being 4th in shots blocked and boasting a strong DGR of 79. On top of that, Princess has by far the most TOI of any Raptor, so if we're evaluating a player's value to their team, Tiny Princess is for sure near the top of the list.

Finally, my goalie pick, and my actual pick for League MVP, Ela Solberg. Solberg has been a damn near statistical anomaly this year, leading the league in almost every significant goaltending stat - Solberg's GSAA is almost double the second highest in the league, and her SV% of .921 is miles above the second placed .906. If QCC manage to complete the threepeat, it'll be in no small part due to Solberg's contribution in goal.

The front runner for MVP this season in my opinion is
Josie Cass. Not only do they have the most points, but they have the most goals in the smjhl. Their shooting percentage is also 20% which is insane. To put that into perspective, Ovechkins highest shooting percentage ever is 17.9% (this current season) and that’s with 14 less goals than Cass. I really don’t see anyone besides them winning, but if someone else were to, It would have to be Ela Solberg. Solberg has an absolutely insane save percentage of .921 and a great GAA of 2,48. To me still, Josie Cass is the clear MVP winner. They’re putting up Gretzky numbers will also being pretty defensively sound with a 65 defensive rating. You could also say Ethan cross is in the running, but I think they benefit from playing on the same line as Cass. In conclusion just give Cass MVp already. They have clearly earned it.

MVP is always a tough award to dish out, especially in the J. So many players are at the same level that it really comes down to the tiny details. Here are a few of the players I think are in contention this season.

Josie Cass - SDT
Cass is a clear favorite, leading the league in goals and points. They had a 19% shooting percentage this season with a slew of points on the player advantage. The leading scorer will always be in contention for MVP for obvious reasons.

Ethan Cross - SDT
The peanut butter to Cass' jelly. Cross lead the league in assists and was second in points. A disher of saucy beauts actually had an astounding 17 power play goals. The only detractor is that they may split votes with their teammate Cass.

Ela Solberg - G
A rare goalie sighting, but hear me out. Solberg had an insane season and is arguable the reason QCC has done as well as they have. Went 29-7-1 over 40 appearances between the pipes. The biggest stat that is in their favor is Goals Saved Above Average. Solberg was at a whopping 31.67! The next highest is 17.98. Solberg was laying it out on the ice and saving some seriously dangerous chances. Only 21 shots faced per game but made their mark.

The obvious answer for the Ideen Fallah Trophy for MVP as decided by the Awards Committee is Josie Cass of the San Diego Tidal. Cass led the league in both Goals with 48 and points with 108. Those are some pretty wild stats for a 66 game season, notching a 1.6 points per game rate. San Diego was a good, not great, team during the regular season. The squad finished 4th of 8th in the Southern Conference and 8th of 16th in the league, going 36-27-3. From the perspective of San Diego as a middling team, Cass’s performance becomes even more compelling to award the Fallah Trophy to.

An under the radar, but growing in popularity momentum pick is Wilhelm Seider of the Colorado Raptors. Despite not leading the team, league, or rookie class in points, some Awards Committee members are starting to talk a lot about the German rookie’s season. Seider finished 7th on his team with 44 points and slotted 16 goals. On the surface, his stats look solid but pedestrian. What the stats and nerds can’t seen on the box score, is Wilhelm’s leadership, ability to get under the skin, and grit that helps propel his team to victory.

Josie Glass of the San Diego Thunder had a historic season. They led the league in goals with 48 and led the league in points with 106. 106 points in 66 games. That's just monsterous. Glass' other league leading stat is 38 even strength goals. Glass also stands with a +26.

Another consideration is his teammate Ethan Cross. He amassed 103 points and a league leading 63 assists. Cross also put up a league leading 17 power play goals.

Next there is Ela Solberg. What stat isn't this killer goalie leading? 2.48 goals against, 31.67 goals saved above expected, a 921% which is 15% higher than 2nd place. Ela places 2nd in Shutouts with 4, and 3rd in wins with 29. However its worth nothing the only reason Solberg didn't win these categories is because they played much fewer games than the big starters, not even placing in the top 10 for games played.

Josie Cass, as others have mentioned, is definitely a top contender for MVP this season. Points leader, goals leader, tied for first in GWG with 9, and still close to 20 shooting percentage (19.0% at time of writing). They also have a solid 140 hits, which is not especially outstanding for a winger, but it's good to see that the scoring hasn't come at the expense of physicality.

Meanwhile, Josie's frequent linemate Ethan Cross is also putting up some stellar numbers, trailing Josie by only 3 points and 8 goals, with 5 more assists and the lion's share of San Diego's power play goals (17) and assists (24). Cross also boasts the highest faceoff win percentage among players with 100+ faceoffs, barely edging out NL's Slava Kasyanenko by 0.1%.

Last but not least we have Ela Solberg. 2.48 GAA on a stunning 0.921 SV%! As sports commentators have begun to say in a How Do You Do Fellow Kids-ian manner, those are video game numbers. Connor Hellebuyck is the only NHL goalie with a better SV% this season at 0.927, but we all know that SMJHL is not a 1 for 1 representation of realistic NHL play, so let's look at the disparity between Solberg and their closest competition, NL's Katharina Rosenthal, who has a GAA of 2.67 and a SV% of 0.906. Still incredible numbers, and across 11 more games, but there are three or four other goalies within spitting distance of those stats. Maybe the only credible argument against Solberg is the fewer games played, but I'll chalk that up to a healthy work/life balance.

I'm gonna get a little silly with this one. For me, an MVP has always been someone who's committed to their clubhouse, no matter how terrible the team is. With that said, my personal MVP would come from the Grizzlies, Falcons, or Scarecrows. My three MVP candidates are:

Koen Boekbinder (Grizzlies)
Matt Smith (Falcons)
Boogan McGillicuddy (Scarecrows)

Undoubtedly, it takes talent to score points on the ice; however, when your teammates are subpar at best, you take matters into your own hands. Boogan McGillicuddy specifically surprised me this season. Even though the Scarecrows were filled with a rookie roster, they still scored 81 points. The same goes for Boekbinder and Smith - both players were major scorers on the teams, keeping their respective teams as competitors for as long as possible.

You can be the best player in the league with the most goals, but I don't think that makes you the most valuable. Keeping your teammates' spirits high is more valuable to me.

When taking MVP into consideration we'll start with one of the more basic Answers. Josie Cass, Leading the J's in both Goals and Total Points it makes logical sense for many people to list them near the top of their list as people love offense and the stats look good. The downside is that San Diego finished 8th in the standings and some people like to pick people whos team finished higher in the standings. My eyes then moved towards Ivan Ivanovitch. As a right defender you'll have a hard time finding them on the raw stats list unless you sort by defenders in the top ten, However they are the league leader in +/- and finished 2nd in the standings. Yes, those things are typically highly correlated but I think its safe to say this stat shows that this team is at its best with Ivanovitch on the ice. Anyway in their own category they are the 2nd leadering goal scorer and lead defenders in assists. This is a big impact player and my MVP
