Deep Dive #1 - Thoughts from a bunch of newcomers

With one week left in the season, I thought it'd be great to give a very personal perspective of how everything has transpired so far for me and my ragtag band of referrals. With me (Greg Evil) on Quebec City, Doctor Wad on Vancouver, Silver Tarandus on Thunder Bay, Eric Sosa the lone defender on St Louis, and Tyler Bodega as the only goalie getting claimed by Great Falls, we fell into a wide range of existing development and recent success it would be interesting to see how each of the rookie seasons would fair.
So far, as a group we have finally found our footing on our respective teams, with myself playing a key role on the 2nd line with Quebec City and fighting for top seed in the playoffs. With 40 points in 51 games and a +20 it felt great to be brought in through the draft and be able to immediately contribute to the team, including 4 game winners. Unexpectedly though, I've also decided that sometimes gloves need to come off and have found two fights and am leading my crew of rookies with 34 PIM and 2 fights. This may be in part of the fact I'm sitting at 100 hits so far, which is well above what I expected at the start of the season. Arguably the best of my referrals was Silver Tarandus. He joined just after the draft and immediately found a home on the Walleye and has been performing nearly as well as I have on a team that struggled early on in the season but has come up the standings recently. With 36 points, he's leading our group with 11 goals and the only other player besides myself with a shorty! Immediately after getting picked up on waivers I expected him to play a huge role and he hasn't disappointed. With some refinements we've seen his performance increase recently which has also resulted in the Walleye moving up to 9th in the standings. The Doc is definitely in Vancouver, with Wad being picked up on waivers just before the start of the season. He has embraced his role as their 2nd best center and I also believe this has brought success to the Whalers. They have seen a nice resurgence to move up to 7th in the standings, but Doctor Wad's stats have improved immensely, including moving up from a -9 to a +6, he's drilled 2 game winners since moving to center, and has also done great in the faceoff circle with a 54.3% win rate. Lastly of the skaters is Eric Sosa. He got claimed to St Louis and has been a workhorse of their defensive core. With over 2 minutes of Shorthanded time per game on top of 1 minute of power play time, he has done an amazing job settling in and doing everything he can to try and bring some success to the Scarecrows. Unfortunately they have been struggling a bit and his stats reflect it, with a -32 so far, however he has tons of great defensive stats to show. 57 takeaways while only turning the puck over 11 times all seasons along with 63 blocked shots and 69 hits, it's safe to say he's giving his all every time he's put out on the ice. I also want to give a shout out to Tyler Bodega of Great Falls. He was the only referral who went goalie, and being the backup to the Grizzlies has obviously resulted in significantly fewer games played, but he did great early on and has a 5-10-1 record while their starter has an 8-22-2 record. It seems like he may be able to find a place on that team and could be a future starter in the SHL very soon. ![]() SHL GM Professor of Baldeconomics
