Deep Dive #2 - The TPE to Standings conversion!
#1

As we are in the tail end of the season, we can now see some parity between the top and bottom teams in the league.  There's obviously a reason to this, so we're gonna take a quick look into each team's performance and the TPE of the players.

Southern Conference

St Louis Scarecrows - 17-31-3 - .363 points % - Average TPE: 321

Obviously this wasn't the season they expected, with a -64 goal differential and currently sitting last in the conference.  Looking at the players that are making up this team we can see this is a team that will be a threat in the coming seasons, with the vast majority being rookies.  Having both goalies, 2 defenders, and 5 forwards all being rookies will always bring challenges.  Only having 4 players over 400 TPE means there's a lot of improvement to be had in the coming seasons.

Detroit Falcons - 18-32-1 - .363 points % - Average TPE: 323

Another team that has started finding their footing lately, but still at the bottom of the conference.  Also having a large number of rookies from Season 82 along with a lot of players who have been here a while but with rookie-like TPE usage, the team doesn't have a large number of vets to carry the new guys.  With only 3 players over 400 TPE, they have a huge opportunity in the future with 12 active rookies and 2nd year players continuing to improve, they may be a force to be reckoned with soon. (Average TPE: 323)

Nevada Battleborn - 19-29-3 - .402 points % - Average TPE: 337

What happens when you have nearly an entire defensive core of rookies?  You get a team that has allowed the 2nd most goals in the conference.  Luckily for Nevada, all of their defensive crew is going to be around next season, and 5 of the 6 will be around for 3 more seasons.  Even the rest of the team is fairly active, although the forwards have been around a bit longer.  5 players over 400 TPE, including their 2nd year goalie, 3 forwards, and their top defenseman, this team should be able to improve their defense and potentially make a title run in Season 84 or 85.

Colorado Raptors - 23-25-3 - .480 points % - Average TPE: 402

Now we're starting to get into teams with established cores and very few rookies.  3 Forwards, a defender, and their starting goalie are all over 400 TPE and the rookies that are on the team are all active, this team is built for success.  Players like Wilhelm Seider, Gabriel Savoie, and Evil Jordan Humphrey coming in this season are all grinding their way to continue improving going into season 83 and they could even make a playoff push this season with their current setup.

San Diego Tidal - 28-23-2 - .547 points % - Average TPE: 498

Now we're getting into the veteran-heavy teams.  With only two rookies in their active roster, this team has a lot of veteran presence, including 5 players from the Season 79 draft.  We have a massive jump up in average TPE between the 5th place team, and 12 players over 400 TPE, and their starting goalie just about there, this is a team that could make a run in the playoffs not just this season, but even the next two seasons.  They will be losing 4 players, including 3 defenders, after this season, but have a nice pipe of activity to come in and take on the starting roles.

Carolina Kraken - 31-22-2 - .582 points % - Average TPE: 468

Here we have a team that is actually overperforming based on the team's composition.  With only 8 players over 400 TPE and 6 starters from season 79, this may be one of the teams that will face a rebuild soon.  While there are only 4 rookies here, they have a great flow of performance coming up the ranks that should compliment incoming rookies for seasons to come.  I honestly do not see a weak link in this team and feel they will always be a top team unless something drastic happens.

Maine Timber - 33-18-0 - .647 points % - Average TPE: 409

Again, another team that if you look just at their numbers they should not be sitting 2nd in the conference, however here they are.  Two rookie goalies, 7 players over 400 TPE, and a handful of second year players that aren't improving as fast as some other teams, and you'd think this team should be pushing for 1st overall pick, not 1st in the conference.  After this season they will only lose 3 players, and should have no issues replacing the top liners with the existing roster.  Expect this team to continue to make strides into the playoffs.

Ottawa Highlanders - 32-17-3 - .644 points % - Average TPE 402

Finally we have the current conference leader.  This team on paper should be mid-tier, but has found their way to the top.  With Hotdog Lunch and Leo Carlsson leading the way at the front and Jeff Kirkstone III manning the net, they are taking this team to the top.  Only 6 players over 400 TPE, 6 rookies, including an excessive 13 forwards on the roster, they are actually the lowest average TPE of the top 4 in the conference.  It will be interesting what happens next season, as they will be losing the afformentioned players and in net their current backup in Victor Bjork-Pejlikka will need to carry a heavy burden to bring this team back up to a top spot in Season 83.

We can see that the Southern Conference may have a shuffling of the order coming soon with players moving out of the Juniors and bringing their talents to the big leagues.  When we look at this in the future I can almost guarantee we see a whole new order.

Northern Conference

Great Falls Grizzlies - 14-32-5 - .324 points % - Average TPE: 361

I feel this team is underperforming, however with almost all of their rookies being up front scoring is at a premium.  With 9 rookies, 7 of which are forwards, the development needs to happen to see improvements.  Only one forward is over 400 TPE, to go with 2 defenders, the rest of the team has the potential to make one really solid run at a championship in 2 or 3 seasons.

Yukon Malamutes - 18-34-4 - .357 points % - Average TPE: 392

Here is a team that has youth in the back half and it shows.  With the most goals allowed in the league, at over 4.6 per game, a starting goalie with only 258 TPE, and 8 players over 400 TPE, there will be some growing pains as new players come into bring the team into the next few seasons.  The building blocks are there with 7 rookies, and veterans to fill in the gaps as needed too.  It might be a struggle next season but, as with Great Falls, it could be a fun season 84 for them.

Anchorage Armada - 23-23-6 - .500 points % - Average TPE: 443

Anchorage has a rare situation; a defensive core of veterans and only two rookies to come up, their offensive power will have to come in clutch after this season.  Luckily they will only be losing one player on offense, but their top 2 lines on defense will also be departing, leaving a major gap that may need to be addressed in free agency or via the draft as they will only have 3 rostered defenders for next season.  The team presently has 6 players over 400 TPE, but next season that is about to drop to one, leaving a gap in experience across the board.  I think this might be one of the teams that will struggle next season unless there are some moves made.

Thunder Bay Walleye - 24-22-4 - .520 points% - Average TPE: 430

Thunder Bay is going to have an interesting offseason.  With their top offensive line all being 4th year vets, they will be losing a large chunk of their offensive power, however they have a good core coming up, with 4 rookie forwards, 3 rookie defenders, and a rookie goalie all ready to answer the call.  Their defensive core will remain in tact too, so they may be able to weather the storm of losing Tip Toasty, Puddles O'Duckling, and Teddy Bloos with a nice group of active rookies coming up for the next 3 seasons.

Looking at these 4 teams that comprise the bottom half of the conference, we can actually see how important having a balance of rookies and veterans can make the difference.  Too many in one aspect can lead to some poor results, and having a good rotation of goalies can help keep the pucks out in the event the defenders lack experience.

Vancouver Whalers - 30-18-3 - .618 points % - Average TPE: 441

This is the first team so far that has zero players from season 79, which means this entire team is only going to get better.  They started the season with some tough losses, but have since shot up the standings and currently sit in 4th in the conference.  10 players over 400 TPE, including their starting goalie, 6 forwards, and 3 defenders, this team is set up for success everywhere except goalie.  Both goalies are in their 2nd last season, so they will need to find a replacement soon to keep the grind going.  It's really impressive how they have developed with 7 players from season 80, 7 players from season 81, and 5 rookies, they have a great balance of growth and can continue that in the upcoming draft.

Kelona Knights - 34-17-0 - .667 points % - Average TPE: 412

The first team in the conference that seems to be overperforming their team makeup, it looks like they have a nice balance of offensive players who are able to offset the defensive gaps.  A +56 goal differential and all but one of their starting forwards with over 400 TPE, along with their goalie and top defender, they don't have much to worry about going into next season.  A rookie goalie should be able to hold the reins of netminding, and the other 5 rookies are all developing nicely.  This will be another team fighting for championships for seasons to come.

Newfoundland Berserkers - 35-13-3 - .716 points % - Average TPE: 653

The powerhouse of the league, this team on paper should be winning 99% of the games they play.  The biggest issue they will be facing is the number of players disappearing after this season, so anything less than a championship will probably be considered a failure.  All but 4 players on the roster are at the cap of 425 TPE used, but of those only 2 will be around after this season.  They have the highest TPE by a lot, and with the experienced players across the board they will be the favorite going into the playoffs next week.  It'll just be interesting to see what happens next season, as there will be many holes in this lineup.

Quebec City Citadelles - 37-15-3 - .700 points % - Average TPE: 553  Defending back to back Champions

Here is another team that will be seeing a decent exodus after this season.  7 players, including both goalies, will all be leaving after this season, however aside from goalie they have a decent group of players coming up the pipe.  With 6 active rookies all performing very well this season, they should be able to continue the success, although it might be a bit of a struggle next season.  The thoughts of a 4-peat in the event a 3-peat happens this season might be a bit more of a pipe dream.

After looking over all 16 teams, we can see the number of veterans seems to correlate to performance in the regular season.  This could be completely thrown out the window in a week when the playoffs start, but it will be interesting to see what happens to some of these top teams next season.
