Dublin, Ireland -- There were rumors going around that Shio Corin would be boarding a flight to North America today. I went down to the Dublin Airport and waited to see if this was actually going to be a reality. Luckily the Dublin International Airport is home to one of my favorite restaurants the Tap + Brew, because I had to wait for several hours. Just when I was about to give up hope and thought that I may have had one too many pints, the towering 6 foot 4 Irish sensation finally appeared in the terminal. Always gracious with his time Shio Corin was willing to give me an exclusive interview. I hope you enjoy our little Q&A.
Q: Obviously, we're here in Dublin International Airport so I am going to guess the rumors are true?
Corin: Yes, I am headed to North America a little early.
Q: Does this mean that you are close to signing with a team?
Corin: No, no, my agent and I discussed it and we think it's best for me to just head over there and get some ice time and make myself available. As you know with the SMJHL we're in the thick of DFA season and there is an outside chance I could be picked up. If that were to happen, I just want to make sure I'm prepared as possible.
Q: So, there is nothing going on that is making you head across the pond? Just preparedness?
Corin: Just preparedness. I know you have to ask and try and get the scoop but there is nothing pending.
Q: I find that fascinating. What happens if it's a waste of a trip?
Corin: I don't believe in anything being a waste. Even if no team picks me up, I believe going over there will send a clear message to all of the teams that I'm ready and raring to go.
Q: Good point. Is there a team that you're hoping comes looking your way?
Corin: Haha, nice try! Only thing I'm hoping for is an opportunity.
Q: Can't blame me for trying. I know you have a plane to catch so just one final question. Anything you'd like to say to the SMJHL?
Corin: I'll be skating every day. Hopefully those teams and GMs take that as an opportunity to come see what could potentially help them on their playoff push.
Q: We all look forward to seeing what happens. Thank you for your time.
Corin: Never a problem.
It was an interesting experience interviewing Corin on his way to a new chapter in his life. I'm not sure I agree with him just going over to a new country on a hope and a prayer, but I admire the self-confidence it takes to make that decision. Corin spoke with a kind of self-confidence and determination that I don't think I've ever seen before. If an SMJHL team does decide to take a chance on him, I think years from now we're going to look back on that move as a steal for whatever team it may be. On the other hand, if no team decided to pick him up, we could potentially be looking at a moment in time that gave a determined player even more motivation to be great. We could look back on it as the biggest mistake a team had ever made. Sure, even if a team picks him up for the playoff run, he still has to be drafted in the off-season. What does that matter? It's not every day you get to have a player like this in your organization to get a look at before you potentially draft them. We'll continue to follow these developments and report back to the people of Ireland on how their newest star is doing in North America.
