S82 PT #0: Answering The Call Due: Sunday, April 20th @ 11:59 PM PST

(This post was last modified: 04-14-2025, 03:14 AM by puolivalmiste. Edited 1 time in total.)

Please pick ONE prompt to write about. Do not mix and match prompts. Identify the prompt you are using in your submission - Copying and pasting the prompt will deduct from your word count so if you do this make sure YOUR submission is 150+ words excluding the prompt.

Written Option 1: About 15 minutes before the start of the first pre-season game your player gets a call. Muffled voice tells them that your team needs to lose this first game 6-5 in the OT or your player’s grandma wont see their cat ever again. They tell that the cat will be gone along the dog of cousin of opposing team’s goalie if either of you tell anyone or make anything appear to be off. The call ends. Are they willing to throw a preseason game just to be safe? Do they inform police or rest of the team? It was clearly a prank, or was it, are they willing to risk it? What does your player do?

Graphic Option 1: Create an image of your player handling the above situation.

Written Option 2: At the end of the last season coach made a moving speech about the upcoming season that will be the last one before the expansion draft will break up the current group. So during their offseason training and training camp, what unusual methods does your player use to be the most hockey player that ever hockeyed? Wearing their gear all the time, expect maybe skates? Or maybe the other way around, rent a local rink and bring their furniture there so they can spend their summer with skates on? Learn to literally chew the puck? How much different it is compared to their earlier training? Or do they still keep it bit more grounded and take an extra jog here and there? And when season starts, does any of it actually help your player or the team?

Graphic Option 2: Create an image of your player doing some very unconventional training.

You will receive 3 TPE for fulfilling all requirements.

All responses are due on Sunday, April 20th at 11:59 PST. NOTE: IF YOU SUBMIT/EDIT AFTER THE DEADLINE YOU WILL RECEIVE REDUCED/NO TPE.

Graphics need to be viewable when PT is graded or you will not receive TPE. Discord only hosts images for very limited time.

Option 2:

During pre season I just opt for extra drinking sessions with the boys. Gotta keep that tolerance on a high level so that it does not interfere with our season performance. Specially when we are on the road, we need to the drinks to keep flowing or else we will not be able to enjoy ourselves. Being outside of Tampa is already depressing enough and specially going to the Canadian or colder US states where it is depressing as fuck. Alcohol makes us stay warm like we are used to in our home town where the weather is always nice and comfortable except for the occasional tornado that passes by. After each drinking session we evaluate how it went and we can improve. Do we need higher end liquor or does cheaper variants suffice that sort of stuff. Perhaps we need to add the occasional line of blow in between to keep us on edge all the time.

Written Option 1

The thing is, our attempted match fixer has made a grave mistake in their plan - they did not realise that both of Kristaps' grandmothers died many years ago. Clearly, whoever this is must be bluffing. After a brief moment of deliberation, Kristaps decided to have some fun with this. He steps out of the locker room and quickly goes up to GM @yosh 's office.

"Hey boss, I need a favour."

"Why now? You have a game in 15 minutes! Get back to the locker room!"

"It'll be quick, trust me. All I need you to do is pretend to be a Pizza Hut employee on a phone call. I've got a script for you and everything." Kristaps pulls up his notes app to show the script he hastily wrote on the way to Yosh's office.

"What? Why?"

"Look, just do this or I'm demanding a trade to Vancouver."

"...fine."

Kristaps presses the button to call back the number. After a few rings, the person on the other end picks up the call.

"So Kristaps, do we have a deal?"

"Hello, this is Pizza Hut, what would you like to order?"

"Huh? What? No, it's not. This is Kristaps Skalbergs, I found you in the phone book."

"A phonebook? What century are we in?" Kristaps mutters under his breath.

"I don't know who that is. This is Pizza Hut, now what would you like to order?"

"Look, you remember what I told you. 6-5 OT loss or your grandma's cat is gone for good."

"Sorry sir, we don't have that as an available topping."

"I KNOW this isn't a Pizza Hut. Now do as I say-"

Kristaps takes the phone from Yosh's hand. "My grandma died ages ago, dicknips."

The person on the other end hangs up immediately.

"Thanks for the help man, appreciate it!" Kristaps runs back down to the locker room, just in time for coach @Troy_McClure03 's pre-game speech.

"...the fuck?"

Written Option #1

I got a call and someone told me they will kill my grandma if I do not score own goals to let my team lose. But hey my grandma died 6 years ago and my other grandma died a year before I was born in Year 1987. They also always lived in germany never in north america and the human at the phone called he is already there. In that case I was a bit confused and I explained I don't speak good english and this human probably needs someone who can help out. So we had a long phone call. During this time I was telling it my team and they brought in the police. They followed the phone call and got this human. I would say that was bad luck for this human. Wrong Person contacted. But we now also try all to find out how this human could have my phone number because normally it is a secret level.

Written Option 2:
This one really hits home for us priders. After winning the 3rd chip in a row with an amazing but old as the hills goalie and a roster that is certainly moving past their prime, the pride got a little sense of this early. Seeing playeys like Justin Time, Logan Webb, Dominik Winters, and Chris Valentine all be moved was a sad sight, and a huge blow to the team. Now with expansion just around the corner, we can expect to lose another 4 players from the team that had been so dominant for so long. My thoughts? Enjoy the time to the fullest. Enjoy having those great users around while you can, take in some extra skates with the guys, hell, even a couple post game beers with the team. It's unlikely we see that sort of domination again for a long ass time so just take in everything you can

Task 2:

WIlliam Salming begins his 24th SHL campaign. So he really knows one and two things about offseason training. This time the vibes are different. Salming knows that it might be his last season as a Steelhawks. So he really wants to leave a good memory for the group if these are his last games for the organisation. Salming tries this past summer one new method to help him be the best version of himself. He began every day by taking a cold plunge to the sea. That way he wanted to improve his stamina and endurance so he could play longer shifts without getting tired. We will see if it helps or not. But that was Salming's secret weapon when preparing for the upcoming season. A pretty unique method, I would say. He recommends it also for his team mates. Another idea could be to go boxing gym and learn to take hits against so blocking shots during PK would not hurt so bad, I guess.

Option 1: "A 6-5 loss in overtime, or your grandma's cat gets it!" The caller is clear. But the message is ridiculous, and especially so to Alexa.

"Which grandma?" She asks, immediately. "The Mexican one or the Norwegian one?"

"... the Mexican one!" The voice answers. Distorted by something, probably some kind of terrible AI voice changer.

"Well, my Mexican grandma doesn't have a cat. She has a dog. Also, I never met her, she died before I was born," Alexa replies, barely containing a snort from echoing down the line.

"... then the Norwegian one!" The caller quickly reacts, at least. Still, what an idiot.

"She lives in communal housing. They don't allow pets in her place, pendejo," Alexa couldn't hold back the laughter this time, signalling to the team's new co-GM as he entered... her own father. She muted the phone and quickly spoke to him. "Call farmor, make sure she's not got a secret cat she lost," she told him, hanging up the phone. "... I have a game to win."

Option 1:

As soon as I end the phone call so many thoughts to race through my mind. Why would someone want us to throw the game? The betting should have had us losing anyways so not much money to be made from that. I won't tell anyone about this call because I dont want my reputation ruined. No matter if it happened honestly or if I did throw the game questions would always be asked about it. As soon as the beeps indicate the mysterious person had hung up on the call I know what im going to do. My grandmother lovers her cat. She feeds it the most expensive cat food in the world. The cat has its own seat in the living room. Mister Buttons has been treated as a king throughout its existence. I know the heartbreak that will be caused to my sweet grandmother. I immediately call a local pet store to see which cat will replace buttons when he disappears later in the day.

Option 2:

It was business as usual for Marek in the offseason. A bit of time off with his fiancee Avery, obviously spent in California for the Expo, some IIHF participation for his home naiton of Czechia, and of course, rigorous training, mostly off-ice, to prepare for the coming season. Marek is now a leader on the Forge and expected to carry a heavy load in terms of production and ice time, so he did review his plans with the strength and conditioning coach and team dietician to ensure that with small changes, his typical offseason would still be structured in a way to support the rigors of his new found seniority and responsibility in the team. In regards to expansion, it does feel a bit sad that part of the group will be broken up, but the Forge has a good mix of veterans on their way out, newcomers on their way up, and a solid core in their prime, so some turnover was always going to be part of the natural ebb and flow with the structure of the roster. If anything, expansion could mean a potential lengthening of a skilled players' career as there will be more jobs available in the league. If your body can hang on, you can play the game for maybe an extra season or two in the right situation. I think that when this season starts, it will be obvious that Marek going about his usual business and remaining even-keeled (not being overcome by any expansion-driven emotion at the beginning of what can be a long season) will pay dividends in his performance.

Bull gets of the phone and isn't sure what to think. We have to score 5 goals? That's hard enough as it is. And convince Gibson to let in 6 is pretty tough. Bull isn't even sure if his Grandma still has her cat as she's still over in Germany with his mother. Bull sends off a text message.

"Hey Gams. Hope you can tune in to watch me play today! Miss you! By the way, what size jersey does Fluffy take? They're selling pet jersey and I'd like to get a Falcons jersey for them!"

There. He didn't say anything about the cat being catnapped or anything that would seem off. Bull sticks his phone in his bag and heads out to start the game. After the first period, the score is 2-2. Still lots of work to do if he wants to save Grandma's cat. He checks his phone and sees a notification. It's a picture of Fluffy! But he doesn't recognize the number. Now Bull is starting to feel a little more concerned.

"Hey who is this? Is that my grandma's cat? Are you behind all this?"
The only reply is:
"6-5 OT loss" with a cat and crossbones emoji.

Bull is still unsure but the text made him feel uneasy. It was time to get back on the ice. The 2nd period is a wild one. Bull scores 2 goals but they are still down by one as it's 5-4 for the bad guys. Bull sees another notification on his phone. This time it's his grandmother!

"Hey Sweetie! Pet jerseys sound sweet! Fluffy is all fluff so just get a small one. If he won't wear it, I'll just add it to my collection of things I have for you!"
No word about the cat...
Bull responds:
"Sounds great gams! I'll ask for one to be saved for me! How is Fluffy anyway?"

It was time to get back on the ice for the 3rd period. It was like a blur and somehow the story lines up almost naturally. The score is 5-5 and they are going to OT.
This time there was no opportunity to get back and check his phone. It was directly to overtime. The game is fast and furious. With a ping pong style game the teams are back and forth with chances on either side. Finally, Matt Smith does a drop pass and Twinkle Toes skates into the puck with a hard slap shot that goes top corner! The Falcons win 6-5 in Overtime! Bull is caught up in the excitement but suddenly realizes this was not the requested result from his threat he received before the game. Bull races back to the locker room and finds his phone and is greeted with a notification from his grandmother.
A young boy is sat in front of a tv at his mother's house with Fluffy on his lap.
"Fluffy has been in your cousin's arms since he came to visit! He's doing very, very well! Your cousin got a new phone today and has been testing out the camera taking pictures of the cat all day!"
