State of the SHL Awards Committee
#1

Hello SHL!

I don't know if the SHL Awards Committee has ever done a state of the union, but we have some news to share regarding some recent changes and felt that this was the best way to share those changes with the community!

As most of you are aware of, Head Office recently completed an off-season survey. In that survey, the community was asked about their thoughts on the SHL Awards Committee. A lot of that feedback was very positive and that we are thankful for! As head of the committee, I have been aiming to make improvements, and it seems like those improvements are helping with how people feel about the committee! Among the positive feedback there is also some constructive criticism which we have taken to heart and have made some slight changes in order to continue to improve.

First off I'd like to clear up some things.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-GMs on the committee
There have been concerns about GMs on the committee and it affecting nominations possibly showing favoritism for their team. At the moment, there are currently no active SHL GMs on the committee and haven't been for a few seasons. Yes, I am an SHL GM, but I am award head.

-Award head and co-head
Myself and Grapehead are the awards team head and co-head. Neither Grape nor I take part in the voting process. Nor do we push committee members to vote for a specific player/user. As heads we help provide data, help kick off conversations and discussions and organize and plan the nominating, voting and presentation process.

-Transparency
There has been a demand for more transparency in the nominating and voting process. I believe I have been bringing more of that with recent awards but I am happy to release more data in the nominations and ballot voting. We want fair voting and will release more information if needed. Going forward along with the post presentation media posts, I would like to make the complete nomination and voting data available so others can verify and validate the data if that's something they would like to have.

-SHL All Star and All Rookie Teams
This data is provided to us by the all star committee. We add the data to the slides. I have not added them to the nomination posts as it is all star information. We do not select these teams.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now with those few things out of the way, we also have some changes to the committee to help with some other concerns.

-Voting Bias

This has been a concern for a few people from the survey results. While Grape and I felt that the committee members were being very fair we can certainly see and understand why there would be suspicion of bias on the committee so we are making the following change to applications:
  •  Soft cap of 1 committee member per team, with a hard cap of 2.
  •  Preference will be given to those who do not have a teammate on the committee.
We believe these changes will squash any concerns of team bias. We obviously can't do anything about in season trades so those cases will be approached when and if they happen.

-Committee member tenure

There have also been concerns regarding committee members length of time on the committee. Going forward we are also introducing the following change:
  • Members can serve for up to 3 seasons before having to reapply with the public.
This change will allow for more members of the community to apply for a spot on the committee as well as help freshen up the minds and thoughts of the committee.

In saying that, we will be posting for new members very soon as we have some members who have been with the committee for a long time who will need to reapply. All recent changes above to the application process will apply to the reapplicants.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That is all from me for now! We look forward to continuing to make the SHL Awards Committee better for everyone! If there are any other questions or concerns please do not hesitate to discuss below or contact me directly through discord!

Have a great day everyone!

Couple surprising things but overall good ideas. Surprised at the the 3 season term length? Will these be staggered to avoid mass hires or whole new team every 3 seasons? Are people able to reapply or given preference?

Overall awards will always be a tough gig and the transparency is greatly appreciated.

It won't be staggered, so the first round of hiring will be big, but we expect there will be cases where someone opts to step down prior to 3 seasons (or god forbid they have to be fired), so things should even out after a few seasons. Outgoing members are welcome to reapply for their position, but they will be evaluated like all applicants. If any applicant has a teammate on the committee then we'll be weighing that heavily, and will try to keep 1 member per team, but the soft cap will allow us to hire someone that has a teammate in the event the pool of applicants is too thin. The intent here is to keep the committee from growing stale, or from having members consolidated onto one team during their tenure. We want to make sure we have a mix of new and experienced members, as well as diverse representation for as many teams as possible.

The SHL awards team, and the J awards team, are two different entities, J being spearheaded by Kahri and sve7en

Definitely some overlap in processes, though. Like none of the heads for awards at either level vote or really participate in the conversations in various awards, they're just helping gather information, collect ballots, make slides. At the SHL level that change started with me and Fuzz, and the J level 7 and Kahri modeled that on the SHL.

It wouldn't surprise me to see them potentially pull some of the new ideas from here to the J, but as you said too, it is its own entity.

I am well aware of that which is why I'm asking if these changes will also go through over there

We already account for team affiliations in our hiring, and if we both had enough long tenured members and consistent application volumes we would consider term limits.

Just wanted to say thank you for taking the time and answering my questions! Keep up the good work!
