Deep Dive #1 – The Tale of Two Seasons
#1

The Carolina Kraken got off to a slow start this season, splitting the results in their first six games. But what started as an average start, quickly turned to success as the team found it’s form under GM’s Kahri and Ghamss. Some key tweaks and acquisitions by the management group turned the teams slow start around.

The Kraken took their 0.500 start and tagged on 16W in their next 18 games, to propel them to the front of the Southern Conference. The players new and old, quickly came together and bonded under this success. Not only were they winning, but they outscored their opponents by 45 goals over those 18 games. The Kraken were steamrolling, their veterans Hetaksh, Ryan Dino-Nugget Havran, Greyson Willis and Kim Chaewon leading the way.

All good things must come to an end. Carolina has progressed through the next quarter season with a less impressive record, 11W and 9L. They have faced some tough opponents over this time, playing more games against the leagues best teams. The fact that they have survived that gauntlet with a better than 0.500 record bodes well for the rest of their season.

Chaewon in particular has been a sensation this year, scoring at nearly a 1.5PPG pace all season long. He leads the Kraken in goals with 34 through 46 games. Also of note is the Selke-like performance of Five Hole Goes West so far this season. The center is a team leading +32, while also posting up 50 points in Carolina’s 46GP, and a team leading 53% on the faceoffs. Five Hole Goes West also leads the team in Relative Corsi – at +5.1% relative to the rest of his team. He also has a positive 2.4 goal differential per 60 minutes played with him on the ice. His Fenwick For % trails only that of rookie newcomer Gord Burns, who has been solid in his debut season.

In goal, Carolina has been solid with Honza Havran and rookie Joe McPadstack (the greatest goalie name of all time) splitting duties. McPadstack in particular has impressed in his inaugural campaign, putting together a nice 13-6-2 record with 3.01GAA and a 0.897SV%. It looks like the Kraken will be set in goal for a number of seasons with this rookie playing this well.

The top end of the Southern Conference has been competitive all season, with the St. Louis Scarecrows, the Maine Timber and the Carolina Kraken dueling for the top three spots. The trio of Peters, Bon and McGillicuddy have led the Scarecrows to a comfortable 14P lead in the standings by the 62 game mark. Carolina, despite a 10 game win streak earlier in the season, remains solidly in 2nd place, 7 points up on Maine.

It seems that this point the finish order is all but decided, with ample space between each team at the top. Does anyone have a big win streak left in them this season? It would take a monumental one to change the outcome, but stranger things have happened. Regardless, these next 20 games will have their own drama, and we expect that to continue right on into the playoffs.
