Ottawa Senators First Game Loss

The Ottawa Senators went into their first game armed and ready to pull out a win against the Montreal Canadiens. They were met with a shock when they were run over early getting behind 3-0 in the first 15 minutes. They battled back with one goal in the second, but ultimately fell 5-1.

The first loss was not the only problem the Senators faced, as goaltender Craig Anderson went down early in the 3rd with what looked like a knee problem. He ended up telling the trainers he was "fine" and continued on with the period. After 2 more goals passed Anderson by, he was pulled with only 4 minutes left.

Upon further inspection it was noted that Anderson was suffering from a swollen knee, and looks to be out for 3-4 weeks. The Senators have ended up calling up goaltender Robin Lehner to replace him, as him and Bishop will alternate the role of starting goalie for the next month.

We'll get to see the full ability of goaltending prospect Robin Lehner in this time, as he hopes to show that he deserves that #1 spot in the near future.

The Binghamton Senators have called up goaltender Marc Cheverie to backup Lawson for the time being.

Sens Make Bold Move Early in Season

After a slow 2-3-1 start with starting goaltender Craig Anderson injured, the Ottawa Senators made a trade early in the season. Not all fans are going to be happy but the Ottawa Senators are "looking at the future" according to GM Zach Miller.

They trade is as follows:

To [Image: small.png]:

2013 1st Round Pick (BOS)

To [Image: small.png]:

Chris Neil
2013 3rd Round Pick (OTT)

------------------------------

The trade "came as a shock" to Neil, but he is "excited to continue his career in Boston".

The Boston Bruins and the Ottawa Senators have been trading partners before, such as in the Chris Kelley deal.

Neil will join his former teammate in Boston for their game against the New York Islanders on October 27. He will suit up against the Senators for the first time on November 14. Look for the fans to give him a warm welcome back home.

Sources are saying the Senators are also not done, quietly looking for someone to replace Neil very soon.

Bad Comeback, Worse News

[Image: jason+spezza+toronto+maple+leafs+ottawa+senators.jpg]

Craig Anderson has had a lackluster comeback from his injury, posting a dissapointing 1-4 record since his return, to add onto his one loss. Anderson dismissed rumours that it could be because his knee is still aggrivated.

"I waited until it was 100%," said Anderson, "the doctors gave me the go ahead, I just haven't had any luck."

Since his 1-4 start, he has been benched behind Bishop who has posted a 1-2 record. The team has even considered calling up Robin Lehner to figure out who would fit best, after his 2-1 record when Anderson was out.

--------------------------------

The team is sitting at an abysmal 5-8-2 record, the news that surfaced today doesn't make the Senators any happier. The team released a statement today stating that star forward Jason Spezza was out with a hip strain, and will likely miss the next 4 games.

Spezza was hit by Milan Lucic in their recent meetup with the Bruins, in the 3rd period. Spezza skated off the ice under his own power, but was told not to put any strain on it, and to miss a few games.

The Senators are going to miss their leading scorer, who has 13 points in 15 games, including 9 assists, and to add to their woe's they have two sets of back-to-back games scheduled in the next 7 days.

Ottawa Senators Mid-Season Review

Team Review

In 41 games the Senators have turned around their entire season. Even with a few injuries, they have pushed through their season into 7th place in the Eastern conference (and 13th in the league). The Senators are sitting with a 21-15-5 record, meaning they have 47 points. A close race for first though in the Northeast Division. Montreal sits in first with 52 points on the season.

We see Buffalo in second with 48, tied with Boston.

While the Senators sit 4th with 47, only one point from jumping from 7th to 4th in the East.

Goaltenders

The Ottawa Senators have entered mid-season turning around from their abysmal start. Robin Lehner was called up after an injury to Ben Bishop, starting ahead of a slumping Craig Anderson. After back-to-back losses for Lehner he was sent back down in favor of the Anderson and Bishop duo. Anderson came back on fire with a 5-0-1 record. Putting the Senators back into winning position. He is currently sitting pretty with a 12-9-1 record after a 1-5 start.

Goalie Stats
Code:
Craig Anderson - GP: 24 - W: 12 - L: 9 - OTL: 1 - GAA: 2.69 - SV%: 91.1%
Ben Bishop - GP: 10 - W: 5 - L: 3 - OTL: 1 - GAA: 2.90 - SV%: 90.5%
Robin Lehner - GP: 8 - W: 4 - L: 3 - OTL: 0 - GAA: 2.83 - SV%: 91.1%

Defenders

Here in Ottawa we knew our defenders weren't going to be great going into the season. However, when your best defender +/- is Mike Lundin at +1, you have a problem.

The Senators have had some defense trouble including a plethora of injuries to Marc Methot, Jared Cowen, and Chris Phillips, having Lundin fill in every time. They have been lucky, however, having only one defender injured at a time.

Only Gonchar, Karlsson, and Gilroy have played all 41 games designated to the team (3 out of the 5 that have), and have tried to make the most of it.

Karlsson is not back to himself, having only 24 points in his 41 games, very short of his 78 in 81 last season. Not only that, his +/- has suffered, and dipped into the minus territory. This Karlsson is looking a lot like the Karlsson we were seeing back in 2010/2011 (his second pro season).

Gilroy has had a good season, probably his best in a while. Take away the fact that he is a -8, look at the fact that he has been entirely healthy, and has popped 14 points onto that scoresheet. Even if he hasn't been playing well, he's one of the two righties on the team, making him quite valuable, no matter how he is playing

Gonchar is not having what we'd call a "career year". With only 13 poitns in his 41 games, looking at about 20-30 points on the season, he is also sitting at a -18. Now minuses aren't irregular for Gonchar, and he makes up for it with 18 takeaways on the season.

Defensemen
Code:
Erik Karlsson - GP: 41 - G: 4 - A: 20 - P: 24 - +/-: -3 - PIMS: 9
Matt Gilroy - GP : 41 - G: 2 - A: 12 - P: 14 - +/-: -8 - PIMS: 8
Sergei Gonchar - GP: 41 - G: 3 - A: 10 - P: 13 - +/-: -18 - PIMS: 4
Marc Methot - GP: 35 - G: 0 - A: 2 - P: 2 - +/-: -9 - PIMS: 28
Jared Cowen - GP: 33 - G: 2 - A: 2 - P: 4 - +/-: -1 - PIMS: 31
Chris Phillips - GP: 33 - G: 1 - A: 9 - P: 10 - +/-: -4 - PIMS: 36
Matt Lundin - GP: 22 - G: 1 - A: 2 - P: 3 - +/-: 1 - PIMS: 4

Forwards

The Senators forwards have been hit time and time again with various injuries (including one to Jesse Winchester spanning almost the entire season). The only two players to play a full 41 game season thus far have been Daniel Alfredsson and Kyle Turris.

Now, while we do see 4 strong players at the top of our stat sheet, the players after #5 start to taper off a bit in terns of production, probably due to inexperience after having to fill in for an injuried player (a plethora of them). Our 4 top players have been Jason Spezza, Kyle Turris, Daniel Alfredsson, and Guillaume Latendresse

Spezza has been on fire, before, and even after his injury. At an "almost" point per game pace before the injury, Spezza has return to be just under a PPG. With 37 points in his 38 games, he has been the star of Ottawa. Doesn't say a ton after last seasons 84 points in 80 games, but keeping at almost a PPG pace is where he is at.

Turris has had a great season, tying career high in points in just 41 games. His 29 points (in which 22 are assists, career high) are good for 2nd on the team, and has been Ottawa's breakout player this year, who, with one more point, will set a career high, hoping to go above and beyond in his (hopefully) full season.

Alfredsson has been old faithful for Senators since he was drafted here, way back in '94. His +9 is really helping the team, along with his 18 helpers and 10 goals (my question is, who are these guys helping, who's scoring?). His 28 points is good for 3rd on the team, and his +9 is good for first. Mr. Captain doesn't seem to age.

Latendresse has picked up quite a bit this season, in his first healthy season in a while. His 16 goals, and 27 points have held steady, and have gotten him promoted to the first line in the last 5 games (where he has 7 points).

Code:
Jason Spezza - GP: 38 - G: 12 - A: 25 - P: 37 - +/-: 1 - PIMS: 17
Kyle Turris - GP: 41 - G: 7 - A: 22 - P: 29 - +/-: -4 - PIMS: 8
Daniel Alfredsson - GP: 41 - G: 10 - A: 18 - P: 28 - +/-: 9 - PIMS: 4
Guillaume Latendresse - GP: 40 - G: 16 - A: 11 - P: 27 - +/-: 2 - PIMS: 33
Milan Michalek - GP: 33 - G: 12 - A: 6 - P: 18 - +/-: 2 - PIMS: 12
Nikita Filitov - GP: 35 - G: 7 - A: 6 - P: 13 - +/-: -15 - PIMS: 4
