Basement Hockey Times Report

Basement Hockey Times in depth look at the Los Angeles Panthers S22 Season & Nicholas Pedersen’s sophomore season with the Los Angeles Panthers.

New year, new line mates, recipe for success?

After playing his junior career and freshman season with the same winger (Jackson Hauke), Pedersen would step onto the ice for the first time with a fresh face, rookie Etienne Modano. Centering the 2nd line with Modano, and budding superstar sniper Yuri Boyka, the preseason could not have gone any better for the trio. Boyka led the Panthers with 20 points, with Pedersen an d Modano chipping in 18 points each, in 18 games played. As a team the Panthers dominated the 18 game schedule, winning 14 games, with a balanced effort from the entire team. Top line Morley, Thomas, and Skarsgaard combined for 50 points in 18 games. Things were definitely looking positive for the young Panther team. But could that carry over to the regular season?

Game 1 – Edmonton Blizzard v. Los Angles Panthers ( 3-2 Loss)

The season got off to a slow start with a 3-2 loss to the Blizzard behind a strong goaltending effort by Jakub Aittokallio. Pedersen starting his sophomore season on the 2nd line, contributed an assist on the Panthers 1st goal of the season by Yuri Boyka. Finishing the game with 1 Assist, a plus 1, 3 hits, and nearly 50% on faceoffs.

The 2nd game of the year turned out to be the Panthers 1st win of the season, in come from behind fashion with a 3-2 win over the Blizzard. Fredrik Wastlund got the Panthers on the board, with Jhonas Skarsgaard capping the Panthers comeback with the 3rd period game winner. Even though he wasn’t mention in the 3 stars of the game, the real star was goalie Jackson Weekes, whose 38 saves kept the Panthers in the game, before they finally figured out Aittokallio.

Pedersen was horrendous in the faceoff dot tonight, only winning 33% of the 27 faceoffs he took. Despite the poor showing there, Pedersen finished as a plus 1 with 2 hits, and a blocked shot.

Game 11 - Los Angeles Panthers vs Seattle Riot (4-3 OT W)

Once again the Panthers jumped out to an early two goal lead, only to have their opponent the Riot come back to take the lead, before tying the game in the third, and winning it 10 seconds into overtime. Adrian Thomaz got the scoring going with his 3rd on the season, followed up by 3rd liner Pajari a little over a minute later. The Riot came storming back, with 3 unanswered goals, heading to third with a 3-2 lead. That didn’t last long with Nicholas Pedersen finally ending his scoreless streak at 10 games, tying the game on a pass from Boyka. Teams went into their defensive shells after that, and settled going to overtime, where Brian Morley received a pass from Wastlund and fired a shot that found the back of the net only 10 seconds into the overtime period. Jackson Weekes turned out a strong performance with 34 saves, running his record to 6-3-2 on the young season.

Nicholas Pedersen had an uneven performance on the evening. He finally got the monkey off his back with the game tying goal, but lost 17 of the 27 faceoffs taken, was a negative one, but did deliver three hits.

11 games into the season, Pedersen has 1 Goal & 3 Assists. And a whole lot of disappointment.

Game 12 - Los Angeles Panthers vs Edmonton Blizzard (5-4 OT Loss)

Game 12 was no different that the half of the Panthers games so far this season, overtime. Unfortunately you cannot win them all when you are playing on this fine line, tonight the Panthers couldn’t get over the hump after giving up two third period goals and having to fight their way back to tie the game. With the score 2-2 heading to the third it was anybody’s game. Edmonton seemed to want it more, scoring two goals in the first half of the period. The Panthers have been a resilient bunch this season, and that didn’t stop tonight, netting two goals in the last 5 minutes to send the game to overtime. Overtime ended the same way each period began, Edmonton scoring first, to send the home crowd home happy. Jackson Weekes, starting his 12 straight games to start the season, turned a side 30 shots, to fall to 6-3-3 on the season.

Nicholas Pedersen looking to build off his first goal of the season contributed an assist on the game tying goal. He was especially strong in the face-off circle tonight; winning 25 of 36 draws, while finishing a negative one, with 2 hits, and a blocked shot.

It wasn’t a happy homecoming for the Panthers tonight, after being on the road for a few days, dropping a close 5-4 decision to the Manhattan Rage in a wide open game. The Panthers coaching staff is especially upset after giving away a 3rd period lead in the final four minutes of the game. Panthers Captain Valterri Bottas did all that he could to try and get the Panthers a couple of points, notching his first goal of the season to put LA ahead with 6 minutes left in the game. But all was for not, with the Rage finding the back of the net 3 and 4 minutes later to win the game. Jackson Weekes had a rare off night, saving only 17 of the 22 shots he faced to fall to 6-4-3 on the season.

Nicholas Pedersen, playing against a few former teammates and line mates from his days in Detroit didn’t find his name on the score sheet, but made up for it in other areas of the ice. In the face off circle, Pedersen won 15 of 23 draws, and delivered 4 hits.

The Change

Following the Panthers loss to Winnipeg, GM Wastlund felt that a shakeup was needed. Wasty swapped Adrian Thomaz and Nicholas Pedersen, and Dropped Captain Bottas to the 2nd pairing to give Kwick less defensive responsibility. To anyone that has read this article can see how awful a season Pedersen is having up to this point with 7 points in 20 games. GM Wasty is taking a huge gamble shaking up a line that has played the previous 72 games together in: Thomaz, Skarsgaard, and Morley. It’s easy to see that Pedersen really has been missing Jackson Hauke, his teammate from Juniors on his wing. This change could have made or break the season.

Game 21 - Los Angeles Panthers vs Minnesota Chiefs (3-1 Win)

Winning cures all. The LA Panthers ended their 3 game losing streak, by going to Minnesota, and beating a revitalized Chiefs team 3-1. Fredrik Wastlund notched his 5th goal of the season to give the Panthers the first period lead. Minnesota came back to tie it on the power play a little over a minute into the 2nd period. Captain Bottas broke the tie giving the Panthers the lead for good. Jackson Weekes got back in the win column turning away 20 of 21 shots that he faced, bringing his record to 11-7-3 on the season.

Nicholas Pedersen facing his former team and his first game centering Morley and Skarsgaard, had a relatively uneventful game. Finishing with 4 hits and 13 of 30 in the face off circle.

Game 26 - Winnipeg Jets vs Los Angeles Panthers (6-1 Loss)

All good things must eventually come to an end, and that’s is exactly what happened to the Panthers 5 game winning streak tonight, dropping a stinker at home against the Jets 6-1. Winnipeg scored the first 6 goals of the game, before LA finally got a marker late in the 3rd period by Etienne Modano. Jackson Weekes has been terrific all year. Tonight was not his night, perhaps he is tired after making his 26th consecutive start of the year.

Nicholas Pedersen, like his team, had a clunker, finishing a negative 2, however, he did deliver 4 hits, and won 50% of his 38 faceoffs.

Points before Change (20 Games) – 2G, 5A Points After Change (6 Games) – 3G, 1A

At the halfway point of the year, Nicholas Pedersen has tallied 5 goals and 6 assists, putting him on pace for 22 points on the season. Which would be a terrible disappointment after putting up 30 points in his rookie season. Sophomore slumps are real. However, since the line changes, Pedersen’s game seems to be stepping up, delivering 4 points in the 6 games. More importantly the team has won 5 out of those 6 games.
