Bjorn Knutsen S23 SMJHL Games 16-20 recap
#1

Game 16 for the Falcons was against the Knights and it was not a good game at all for Knutsen as he was a -2 with no points, 3 shots and 1 hit. The Knights took a 1-0 lead with the only goal in the first period while the Falcons tied it on the power play in the second period. The Falcons would take a 2-1 lead early in the third period with another power play goal, but future Toronto teammate of Knutsen, Benson, scored not only the game tying goal but also the game winning goal as the Knights won in overtime 3 to 2. “This was a very frustrating game for myself as not only did the Knights limit the amount of chances we had, but I wasn’t very good in my own defensive end either as I was on the ice for 2 out of the 3 goals against and those goals being scored by Benson stung even more.”

The next game, 17th, was a rematch against the Knights again. Kelowna took a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds into the game as D’Amico scored and then added the only goal of the second period to take a 2-0 lead into the third period as Kvarnvall scored. The Falcons would answer with a shorthanded goal by Manius with just less than 10 minutes left in the game, but could not get the game tying goal as Kelowna won 2 to 1. Knutsen was held pointless for the second straight game and first time this season in back to back games without a point. He also had 4 shots, a minor penalty and was a +1. “Not happy that I wasn’t able to get on the score sheet again, but certainly not thrilled that we lost back to back games against Kelowna. Both games, their defense shut down out top line and held us in check and we have to do a better job of generating offense and opportunities to counter act that.”

Losers of two straight, Detroit played the 18th game of the season at home against the Force. The Falcons would get a power play chance just over halfway through the period and Kekkonen would net the first goal of the game and put the Falcons up 1-0. Just 16 seconds later, Mack would get a feed from Knutsen and put the Falcons quickly up 2-0. Detroit would score the last goal of the game a little more than halfway through the second period and would break their losing streak with a 3-0 win over the Force. Regina was held to 18 shots on goal while the Falcons fired 30 shots. Knutsen would have 3 of those shots to go along with 1 hit, +1 rating and the 1 assist to break his two game pointless streak. “Regina has had our number all season long and coming off of two straight losses, this was a big win for us and will hopefully propel us toward the back half of the season to play strong defensively and take advantage of our offensive chances.”

For the 19th game of the season, Detroit played Kelowna for the 3rd time in 4 games and the first of three in a row against the Knights. Detroit scored the only goal of the first period to take a 1-0 lead but the Knights would tie the game at 1-1 on the power play early in the second period. Just a minute later, Manius would give Detroit the lead again. The Knights would get a power play chance later in the period and Ponsen would connect to tie the game at 2- heading into the third period. Neither team would score in the third period as the game would go into overtime. 36 seconds into overtime and after taking a pass from his future teammate in Toronto, Johnson, Knutsen loses the puck, but retrieves and fires the game winning shot into the back of the net as the Falcons win 3 to 2. “After the Knights dumped the puck into our zone, Mack and Johnson did a great job of retrieving and bringing the puck up into the Knights’ zone. I just wanted to get the puck on net and was lucky enough that the shot went in.”

The 20th game of the season was the second of three games in a row against the Knights and Detroit hoped to carry the momentum of a big win from the last game into this one. Manuis put the Falcons up 1-0 early in the first period with a power play goal, but the Knights would counter with two goals later in the period to take a 2-1 lead into the second period. The Knights dominated the second period as well with two more goals, including one on the power play, to go up 4-1 heading into the third period. The Falcons would get an early power play chance and Mack would cash in to cut the lead to two as Knutsen and Manius assisted on his power play goal. However, the Knights would score again 5 minutes later to take a 5-2 lead and the final goal of the game was scored by Knutsen, his 12th of the season, to make the final score 5 to 3 in favor of the Knights. Knutsen was also a -1 in the game along with 2 shots and 3 hits in the game.
