Tommy Creller was drafted first overall by the Manhattan Rage in the S21st SHL draft. What makes that interesting is how he was only drafted 15th overall in the S20 SMJHL draft by the Detroit Falcons. This symbolizes a great determination within the player and someone who wanted to be the very best he possibly could become. He has seemingly been a great teammate from all accounts and has a positive impact within the Manhattan Rage locker-room. Here is our scouting report on Tommy Creller, and establishing what his strengths, weaknesses, and what he can improve on as an SHL player.

Strengths:

Skating: Creller is simply dynamite with skates on his feet. He has the ability so go up and down the ice in mere seconds and is challenged by few on pure speed and skating talent. He has a great stride in his initial steps, he skates hard, and simply resembles the flash on skates. This allows him to escape through good defensive positioning and place pressure on any opponent he faces on the ice to always cover him. He can break a play at any given second. This is arguably tied for his best trait and skill as a player.

Endurance: Creller has a motor that simply never stops, which is rather incredible considering how much energy it takes to skate as fast as he does. You can hit him ten times against the boards, but his endurance and motor will simply not be stopped or effected. He can also eat up an insane amount of minutes on the ice, which helps keep some of his teammates more refreshed, and ultimately allowing them to play better on a more consistent basis. A true testament to his character and how hard he wishes to work as a player to ensure victory for his team.

Puck Handling: Just an absolute wizard with puck. Creller has the ability to make things happen with his stick that many in the league can only dream of. Highlight reel plays pertaining to skill moves are quite a common occurrence for him. This helps him fake-out defenseman and other players easily and also make it incredibly difficult to get the puck of his stick. This obviously correlates with the ability to both score goals and set up his teammates for goals.

Face Offs: For someone who is not a natural center, Creller just has the natural ability to be one of the better players at having excellent timing for a face-off and of course, the ability to win them at a consistent basis. This skill can be useful, in case one of the centers gets kicked out of the circle, and Creller can replace him. Often times, Creller might just do a more sufficient job than the player who was kicked out.

Passing: The second of Creller’s best skills, he is arguably the best or at the very least, one of the very best playmakers in the entire league. Even when it may seem like there is no play to possibly be made, Creller will surprise everyone and pass the puck through the smallest of holes to ensure the puck enter the goalie’s net. He is also quite creative in how he passes the puck and the speed in which the puck jumps from his stick, to that of one of his teammates. For the love of God, if you are the opposition, find a way to account for nearly every pass he makes on the ice, otherwise it will simply be too late, and Creller will have racked up another assist on his stats for the season.

Scoring: Creller is a really solid goal-scorer. It is certainly not an excellent trait currently and he does not have a massive laser shot that is nearly un-blockable. However, he is very effective with his shot, and more often than not can find his shot being successful and having the puck enter the net. I think there can be more improvement in where he chooses to shoot and the strength of his shot, but he certainly has more than above-average shooting ability.

Defense: For a winger that has such great skill and focus on his offensive game, do not sleep on Creller’s defensive ability. This often gets overlooked, considering he is such a dynamic offensive player in the first place. However, Creller has excellent positioning with his body, which often allows him to place whoever he is defending in a situation he does not feel comfortable with the puck. He also places a lot of effort into trying to get the puck outside his zone and allow the goalie to breathe. Perhaps his most underrated strength as a player.

Weaknesses:

Checking: While Creller is certainly willing to hit someone and try to rattle them, he simply does not have the brute force to be successful in his checks. He has the size, but perhaps just lacks the ruthless aggression sort of demeanor to be considered a productive checker. This can be worked on though with the right coaching, but it is unquestionably going to be a uphill battle for this not to be in the weakness category in the future.

Fighting: Do not expect Creller to be someone who will drop the gloves, but even if he does, he would most likely be knocked out by his opponent in a matter of seconds, because the fighting skills are simply non-existent. He will never be a player that can energize his team through a fight, yet alone a victory in one. Just not in his demeanor, and will most likely never be, even with coaching.

Good, but Can be Even Better in the Future:

Elite Production: For all the skill Creller possesses, the production ha simply not matched the expectations for a first overall selection just yet. Through fourty-nine games this season, Creller has seventeen goals and twenty assists, for a total of thirty-seven points. That is certainly good, but I think someone with his skill and expectations, the production level can be worked on. With more experience and work placed in the gym and rink; Crekker has the opportunity to become one of the elite players in the league.

Strength: Creller is quite strong and it takes a very strong check by a very strong players to knock him off the puck. That being said, it is not impossible to not duress him during possession of the puck, so there is still some room for impreovement in this regard, as expected with someone still maturing into his own body. However, he is still quite young, so while the strength is good now, it can become even better when his body matures more.

Overall:

Creller was an excellent first overall draft selection by the Manhattan Rage. He has all the dynamic skills to be an exceptional player for a long time with the franchise, and possesses few weaknesses, of which are not too significant. The scariest thing is that Creller is still quite young, only being in the league for a few seasons now. He still has room to grow, and should he reach that potential, the rest of league will need to watch out, if they have not already.

Analysis: His battle strategy is focused a lot more on speed and skill rather than brute strength. A leader among men and fearless. In fact, he was hand chosen by his peers to be the leader of the Unsullied army. These traits are shared with Creller, especially the speed they share in their respective worlds. Furthermore, Tommy will certainly continue to look at becoming the commander of the Manhattan Rage army, considering how much they invested in his future by making him a first overall selection in the SHL draft a few seasons ago.
