Mr. Yuri Boyka after scoring a goal for the Panthers

Yuri Boyka is a left winger who currently plays for the Los Angeles Panthers of the SHL. He was drafted with the thirty-third pick in the S20 SHL draft, and has since then become a great value pick for a third round selection. Yuri exemplifies the idea that it does not matter where you are drafted, you can still become a productive member in the league and prove to everyone that they made a mistake in passing up on you for someone else instead. This is our scouting report on Mr. Yuri Boyka, emphasizing on his strengths, weaknesses, and what needs to occur for him to become better as a player.

Strengths:

Skating: Boyka is an absolute machine on skates, and not one that is bound by weight. He is a blur when he skates on the ice, and few if any players in the league possess more natural skating ability than him. This allows him to simply cut through defenses like Swiss cheese and make the opponents job of defending him an absolute nightmare. This might be his best trait as a player as it is great from both pure natural and skill capabilities.

Strength: Boyka is very strong for being such a young player. He seemingly hits the weight room on a consistent basis and takes pride in watching his opponents fail to remove himself from the puck. His arms are huge for being a recent draftee, and with his body still maturing, the pure strength Boyka can possess in his prime is simply a scary thought to contemplate, because in all likelyhood, he may become a physical beast in the near future.

Endurance: Boyka’s motor is simply tremendous, as he never takes a play off, nor does he seemingly every get immensely tired from playing. In fact, he does not need many breaks between shifts; he could technically play a good five to ten minutes before he would even be in dire need of one. This obviously helps his teammates out greatly, in case they needs breaks for their own bodies. This is based on both pure will to succeed and natural ability, which is amazing in its own right.

Puck Handling: So we have a player that is incredibly fast on skates, strong, and hardly gets tired over time. Let’s now add someone who has amazing skills with his stick and handles the puck incredibly well. Boyka preforms moves with his stick that only some players in the league can actually dream about doing. The puck almost feels like its glued at times to his stick and it becomes unfair to opposing defenseman to have to get the puck of Boyka’s stick any way they possibly can.

Passing: Boyka is an exceptional playmaker, as he is able to see the ice amazingly well and know where to exactly place the puck, so his teammates can succeed in scoring it. He can make a strong pass that instantly hits the stick of his teammate, and he can just easily send a long, slow, but precise pass, in case one of his teammates has an opportunity at a breakaway goal. Either way you look at it, Boyka is a playmaking weapon with the puck on his stick and needs to be accounted for on the ice at nearly every moment, otherwise he will hack your heart out constantly.

Scoring: Perhaps the other great treat of Boyka is his scoring capabilities. Any time of shot that needs to be made, he can absolutely preform. He has a rocket laser shot, but can also easily have a swift wrist shot, that enters the net before the goalie can even see the puck. This essentially makes Boyka a threat anytime he is inside the opponents side of the ice, simply because of the arsenal have shots he has equipped with him at any given time. The smallest mistake by the defense can lead to a goal out of nowhere being scored, and ensuring victory for Boyka’s team.

Defense: Aside from Boyka’s obviously talented offensive abilities, he is quite the capable and successful defender as to. Due to his success at scoring and playmaking, this can sometimes get overlooked by scouts. However, there is no denying the coaching that has allowed Boyka to become this great at defending. He has a good sense for where to be on the ice and how to position himself, in order to knock the puck off the opponents stick. In addition, since he is such a slick skater, he has the ability to transition himself from one portion of the ice to the other swiftly, and that simply cannot be taught; you are either born with a such a skill, or you are simply not.

Weaknesses:

Checking: Boyka, for all the strength he possesses simply cannot muster the fortitude to check on a consistent basis. Even when he does though, for some reason he simply misses and makes a fool out of himself. Make no mistake about it, this is a highly finesse player and simply lacks the mental aggression to ever be a good checker. Even with coaching, this skill has quite a long way to go to even be remotely average, but time is certainly on his side to see this not remain a weakness in the future.

Face Offs: He is not expected as a winger to be excellent at face-offs, but what happens if one of his teammates or two get kicked out of the circle? You are essentially stuck with someone who has no timing whatsoever and will in all likelihood win perhaps one out of every turn face-offs. It is not essential this skill gets fixed in the near future, but it would certainly help his team immensely, in case of an emergency situation arises for whatever reason. The more assets you have to offer a team help the game, the better of course!

Good, but can use some improvement:

Production: Boyka certainly has produced for the Panthers this season, no one can refute that. In fifty-one games for the team, he has scored twelve goals, and has earned twenty-three assists, for a grand total of thirty-five points. That should be commended, but there is room to grow with his natural talents and more should be expected, in order for him to be pushed to grow and achieve greatness. Next season will be his fourth years within the league and Boyka needs to make that one last jump to go from a good productive player, to someone who can be great. He can do it, he simply has to allow his desire to take over.

Overall:

Yuri Boyka is someone who has been under the radar his entire career, but certainly not anymore. He has immense skills in skating, strength, shooting the puck, being a playmaker, and constantly having a great motor. However, he lacks mental aggression, which can sometimes cause him to be pushed around by other players. Still, keep an eye on how much more he can improve and continue to embrace his underrated story.

Game of Thrones Comparison: Pre-Hound meeting Arya Stark

Arya is someone who was the tomboy of the group and always adventurous. The talent to be great was always there inside her, but early in her life she was simply afraid to fully embrace that side of her. She is quite often regarded as the underdog too. Boyka is ambitious, talented, and the underdog, but simply lacks the will to do what needs to be done at times, especially if that thing (in this case checking or stand up for yourself on the ice), requires you to get your hands dirty a bit.
