Maxim Horvat was drafted first overall by the Winnipeg Jets in the S16 SHL draft. He now currently plays for the Texas Renegades and is their two-way playing center, who is arguably the core of their forward pool. Horvat from all accounts is a great leader within the Renegades locker room and is considered to be one of the more respected players through the entire league. This will be a scouting report of Mr. Maxim Horvat, analyzing his strengths, weaknesses, and what he should be currently viewed as a seasoned SHL veteran.

Strengths:

Skating: He can be considered the flash on skates, should there be a super-hero comparison for Horvat, but since there is not, labeling him simply as one of the fastest skaters in the league would be a sufficient title. He can glide through defenders with ease and get across each section of the ice at an incredibly swift pace. He is virtually sometimes un-catchable by his opponents and can cause a massive headache on a nightly basis for the opposition. This is arguably one of Horvat’s two best skills as a player.

Endurance: Horvat has one of the best motors in the entire league. Only once in a blue moon will you find him not giving every ounce of effort he has on a shift and this leads to more scoring opportunities, because he will never give up on a play. Horvat also rarely gets tired on the ice, which allows him to take pressure and energy off his teammates, by absorbing more minutes on his own shoulders. A true testiment to his character and it also inspires his other teammates to simply work a lot harder than they may currently do, even if their work rate is impressive already.

Puck Handling: One of the best players in the league with the puck on his stick, Horvat can be considered a magician when in control of the puck. He has slick and incredibly fast reflexes in his hands, which allows him to preform creative moves at any given moment with his stick. This causes the defense on the opposing team to always think before they act, because one mistake can allow Horvat to simply place the puck right past them and male them look quite silly in the process of doing so.

Passing: Horvat is simply a spectacle to watch when passing the puck. He is so swift and precise with his passes, that you can often miss when the puck reaches his teammates stick, but the process is simply that swift. Any type of pass on anywhere on the ice can be made quite easily for Horvat, which obviously makes him a lethal weapon anywhere and anytime when he is skating on the ice. Even in the corners, he can simply swoop the puck from under a defenseman and make a pass to one of his teammates near the goalie. A goal can be created like that at any given moment.

Scoring: Arguably the other of Horvat’s two strongest skills as a player, his pure goal-scoring capabilities are through the roof. He has the rocket-laser shot you desire to see in all great snipers, but has an array of other shots at his disposal at any given moment. A swift wrist shot, and a wickedly effect one-timer; someone can tell Horvat to do a specific shot and he will most likely complete it with ease. Defense must cover him on a consistent basis, or otherwise risk Horvat finding the net a multitude of times in the game, but this is simply based off his skill, and not factoring in any production issues he might be currently facing.

Defense: Horvat takes significant pide in his two-way game, it is sort of his calling card as a SHL player. Horvat has exceptional balance and grace as a forward in preventing attacks from whoever he is covering on the ice and shutting down the said opponent at any given moment. The fact that his defensive game has been this fantastic for such a long time in the league is quite the indicator how how thorough Horvat wants his overall style on the ice to be completely dominant in every aspect of the game, which represents his character on the ice and in the locker room as a whole. This comes from both pure natural talent to get around the ice swiftly and that instincts he has learned over time that makes him such a defensive force.

Weaknesses:

Checking: For a player who does desire to perfect their two-way style of play, Horvat is not the most impressive checker in the league. In fact, more often than not, when he attempts to hit an opponent, it often has little impact or Horvat completely misses the target. Still, once in awhile he can land an effective hit. However, for someone who takes great pride in their two way style of play, this essential defensive skill needs to be improved. It is doubtful his checking skill will ever be something incredibly impressive, but Horvat certainly has the chance to make this weakness into something above average over time.

Goal scoring: It is quite amusing actually, for someone with as much goal scoring talent that Horvat possess, he simply has not been able to find the net this season in the SHL. Through fifty games this season, he only has nine goals. I would at the very least expect that number to have been closed to double. Horvat needs to be more consistent in getting that puck behind the goalie inside their net. To be fair though, his overall game has been pretty solid, with thirty-seven points overall on the season.

Good, but can still use some additional work:

Strength: Horvat has average strength as a player. He can certainly take a few hits by defenseman and will still maintain possession of the puck, but he can be rattled quite quickly. Rumor has it, Horvat has been attending the gym on a daily basis and is working quite diligently to become stringers on his skates. With his will and determination being legendary around the league, this skill will most likely be improved over time, even if he has already been a seasoned player in the league.

Face offs: For a center whose one of the main jobs is to win face offs, Horvat is simply good, but not great at winning them on a consistent basis. He will not get kicked out of the circle often by the officials, but his reaction time to the puck being dropped can use some improvement. This can be crucial when winning a face off is imperative to have one last possession in a game, so it is imperative the Horvat continues working on this skill and learning to have a quicker reaction time.

Overall:

Horvat brings an excellent combination of a dynamic offensive game, while also simultaneously placing great effort into his defensive game too. He has a never ending motor, which can makes the opponents night lousy. Furthermore, Horvat displays great leadership skills and is someone you absolutely want inside your locker room to motivate players and guide them along the way as well.

Game of Thrones Comparison: Ser Barristan Selmy

A bit seasoned, but still one of the most respected two-way fighters in the entire world and one of the wisest counselors you can have aiding you. Horvat embodies this with his two-way style and ability co console both young players and General Managers about the proper course of action to take in certain circumstances. People may slightly underestimate his capabilities because of his age, but that would be one of the most foolish things to do, as he will make you pay dearly with the smallest does of doubt about him.
