Cameron Urbowicz is another player who epitomizes the idea of a value pick, from where the was drafted, and what he has now ultimately developed into. He was initially twenty-ninth in the SMJHL S20 draft, and then was drafted nineteenth overall by the Hamilton Steelhawks in the S21 SHL draft. Needles to say, Urbowicz has been underrated and an underdog for quite sometime in both the SMJHL and the SHL. He was then traded to the Seattle Riot, and he currently plays wing for them. He has since developed into a solid prospect and someone who will certainly produce at the next level. This is our scouting report on Urbowicz, analyzing his strengths, weaknesses, and what type of player he can and will become at the next level.

Strengths:

Skating: Cameron is incredibly fast when skating on the ice, no seriously, like really fast. He causes havoc with his ability to move around on the ice, causing opposing defenses to be playing a game of cat and mouse constantly. His skating also affects his offensive game in a significant manner too, as he is able to easily pull of breakaways and set himself up for easy opportunities to score. He is also a valuable asset on the power play, because he can get up and down the ice swiftly, which is essential when a power play is about to be killed off by the opposition. This is arguably one of Cameron’s two strongest traits as a player.

Strength: For someone who is still quite young and not deep into their hockey career, Cameron is a very strong player. It takes a very strong opposing player to check him, in order for him to lose possession of the puck, and he is hardly knocked down by opponents either. He is ripped in both his arms and legs, the latter allowing him to have a strong stride when skating on the ice. He has been hitting the gym regularly and once his body matures even further, there is no reason to doubt that Cameron might become one of the strongest player in the entire SHL.

Endurance: Not only is Cameron incredibly strong, and can skate rather swiftly, but let us not factor in that it take a significant amount of time on the ice to get him tired. You sort of have the making of a very impressive prospect here from a pure physical standpoint. He gives maximum effort each play and it sort of has a trickle down effect on the rest of his teammates. Can play multiple shifts in a row without getting exhausted, but by no means is he the biggest cyborg in the league. Nonetheless, he has a highly impressive endurance rate for such a young player.

Puck Handling: Moving to his offensive capabilities now, Cameron certainly displays some natural ability with the puck on his stick. His speed and the ability to handle the puck like it is glued to his stick is certainly a dangerous combination. He is capable of making definers looking foolish and going on the Sports Center top ten, but not on an every game basis, he has not reached that level of dangling quite yet. With further development and adequate coaching in the SHL, this skill can only improve, and it would not shock me if he develops his puck handling ability, to become the aforementioned highly highlight fell type of player in the SHL.

Passing: The other of Cameron’s two strongest abilities as a hockey player, his playmaking skills are incredibly impressive, and is quite close to approaching elite playmaking level. Can make nearly every type of pass, with nearly any type of speed, in nearly every situation. He only struggles when he is behind the net with his passing, but I expect this will be easily fixed in the SHL with coaching. He is always in good graces with his teammates, because he is the one who is typically feeding them the puck and allowing them to continuously add goals into their stats for the season.

Defense: Cameron’s pure physical abilities, and offensive capabilities sometimes can overshadow his defensive skill and potential. His skating allows him to catch up with most players, minus only the elite offensive players in the league. His strength allows him to not be pushed around by other offensive players, and he displays natural defensive ability, with his positioning being nearly perfect most of the time. Will only improve into an elite defender over time, should Cameron put in the work, and might even become a penalty kill quality winger should his progression on defense continue as it has.

Good, but Can Use Some Work:

Scoring: Cameron can certainly make an open shot if given the opportunity, no one would refute that. However, he just seems to lack a lot of the natural skills and instincts you desire in a potentially great goal scorer. His strength allows him to have a wicked slap shot and one timer. However, he does not seemingly have a good wrist shot, as it lacks that great snap you want from a player. Moreover, his shots from deep into the zone tend to be inaccurate. Morale of the story here is that he is capable and will score double digit goals eventually in the SHL, but the ability to ever finish in the top the of goal scoring is significantly doubtful, unless he improves these skills and has great coaching to listen and learn from.

Production: For someone with as little experience in the SHL and as young as Cameron is, he certainly did not have a bad season from a production standpoint. In fifty-two games for the Riot, Cameron netted four goals and was credited with seven assits for a total of eleven points. However, I do believe him getting closer to twenty points is not so far out of the question. So while the production is certainly solid from where he is currently in his career, there is improvement to be made, and I do believe it will become better over time. Will probably never be leading the league in points, but I can see him being in the top thirty or so at some point.

Weaknesses:

Checking: For someone as strong as Cameron it is somewhat surprising how awful he is at checking his opponents. He lacks appropriate timing on the hit and knowing the correct situation to when attack the opponent. Moreover, when he does connect, he simply hits the wrong area of the player, either making illegal contact and forcing his team to kill a penalty or simply makes a fool out of himself, hurting himself more than the opponent in the process. It is unlikely even over time he will ever be average at this skill.

Face Offs:Wingers still need to understand the importance of being adequate on face offs, in the case their center gets thrown out of the circle. Cameron is most certainly a liability in this area, as if he is asked to replace his center in the face off circle, there is virtually no chance he all win. He lacks the basic instincts and skills to win a face off, and most likely never will unless he decides to invest great time in improving the skill.

Overall:

Cameron is an incredibly strong, fast, dynamic playmaker who does not get tired easily. He still needs to work on improving his production numbers, the ability to know how to properly check opponents and when to do so. Furthermore, improving his face off abilities is a luxury, but a very important one that organizations should expect from their wingers. He has his age on his side though, as there is no doubt a level of upside that is yet to be met by him, and with the proper investment by Riot management and the coaching staff, it would not be shocking at all if Cameron developed into a top six player for the organization.

Game of Thrones Comparison: Daario Naharis

You have been the underdog since day one, sold into slavery to fight into the fighting pits, but proved your worth through your combination of strength, speed, and endurance. Cameron has been an underdog too since his days in the SMJHL, considering where he was drafted, but his combination of skills like Daario have made him more known, and a valuable prospect for the Riot.
