Task 5(3 TPE) - TSN Turning Point

The turning point for the Edmonton Blizzard I believe was their first round playoff series win against the Texas Renegades. It was a battle between legendary goaltenders Aittokallio and Fourfour that went to seven games before the Blizzard prevailed. Texas had won the season series against the Blizzard and looked to be in prime position to begin another march to the cup. Texas had stocked its roster in the off season with key free agent signings and with an arguably stacked lineup Texas was clearly looking to advance to the finals. The Blizzard played Texas tough though and won out in a grueling seven game series. I believe it was after this that the Blizzard began to believe in themselves and that they could make it past any team. And they did just that in another hard fought seven game series with Seattle. They had the edge in the season series with Seattle, winning five games and losing three. I'm not sure they expected another seven game series but the now battle tested Blizzard were more than up to the task. And now they are in the finals and have fought their way there in two super exciting series. Edmonton believes now that they can win. It all started with that series win against the Renegades. Edmonton will be the season 23 champs. (223 words)

Olly Petty again here, Vlad with tonight's big start to the SHL finals I know that some in our audience don't know the finer points of hockey. Can you tell them what icing is for example? Well icing when the puck go flying way way fast and no one catch it, referee arm go up and game stop. I see, and high sticking? What is that? High sticking when you take stick and go boom like that, that bad. So you can't do that? No No against rules. You dumb when you do that. Vlad what is slashing then? Slashing you go like this, that bad too. You mean there's a penalty for that too? Yeah and for spear and trip, all bad, you go sit in box by yourself and feel bad, then you go free.
The Blizzard are at home tonight against New England at the Byrde Feed and Seed arena at 8 in game 1 of the SHL finals. Good seats still available. That's Olly Petty with a look at sports......I think that went well. (276 words)

Written/GFX 7 (3 TPE) - Head to Head

The comparison today will be between two rugged defensemen Friedrich Muller for Edmonton and Kaspars Tsizling for New England. Big hitting defensemen can change the complexity of a game with a few well timed hits. They can also cost their team as well by taking ill advised penalties which in the playoffs will be essential not to do. Any scoring that they can chip in is a bonus. We will be comparing these two players on the basis of points, penalty minutes and hits.

Muller while not the top penalty minute guy on the team was one of the leaders in that category for his team. He had 69 pim on the season which while not exhorbitant is still a pretty high number. He was also up there in hits for his team hitting triple digits with 102. He was a nice bonus for his team in the scoring department as well chipping in with 27 points. Muller may take an occasional bad penalty but this is the type of balance you want to see between the points, scoring and hits for a big defenseman.

Tsizling on the other hand was an absolute beast when it came to pim and hits, way above anyone else on his team with 174 pim and 193 hits. These are massive numbers in these categories. It also shows that Tsizling is more likely to put his team in trouble by taking a foolish penalty. Does his scoring chip in enough to offset this? With only 13 points in the season he doesn't score enough to fully offset the massive penalty minutes that he takes.

All in all the advantage in the nasty defensman category would have to go with Friedrich Muller for Edmonton as he provides a more well rounded contribution to his team. Tsizling, while providing some big hits for his team is more than likely going to end up in the box with a foolish penalty and put his team in a hole that is tough to overcome in the playoffs.

Task 5 TSN Turning Point:

TSN Turning Point-
The Vancouver Whalers let the Presidents Cup and Western Conference Championship slip through their fingers. They entered the playoffs dropping three straight to Regina Force; the team who had been the worst team in the SMJHL all season. The wind had been sucked from Vancouver’s lungs, they were playing their worst hockey of the year as they approached round one of the playoffs. Round one had Vancouver matched up against the Regina Force who had just taken it to them three straight games to end the season and had the momentum rolling. The young Regina team poured all they could into game one; but veteran goalie Eric Lundqvist wasn’t having it. Regina was able to score on a power play, which they were on most of the night as Vancouver took penalty after penalty. The monster line lead by Captain Barbashev was held quiet all night long as Regina peppered Lundqvist with shot after shot. Further proving why he is the best goalie in the SMJHL; the score was 1-1 in OT before Pergher buried one to end it. This crushed the hopes of the Regina Force and brought back the swag Vancouver had seemed to have lost. They rolled over Regina, and beat up on Kelowna to make the finals.

Task 6 Radio Ad:

Alex Mack! BARBASHEV! THE RUSSIANS are COMING!

KRGF 169.69 The official sponsor of the SMJHL, and the only place to listen to all the action, behind the scenes interviews, and latest injury reports!

We got what we wanted; the two best SMJHL teams face off mono y mono to decide who will be crowned the Season 23 Champion. I don’t know about you but my dick is hard!

We got a loud and cocky Vancouver Whalers team going up against a silent by deadly squad in the Detroit Falcons! This will be a match up! For the first time in three seasons we have someone other than the Kelowna Knights in the playoffs. The Detroit Falcons already stole Vancouver's Presidents cup; can they take the 4 star cup as well?

Tune in live every afternoon for PBP commentary by the host with the most Dick “Johnson” Hanz, and Co-Host Ron Ultrein. This is going to be a series we are going to talk about for seasons to come; if this one doesn’t go all seven then I might change my name.
It should be hard hitting, high scoring, and high-flying! These two teams absolutely hate each other!
Remember KRGF 169.69 is the only play for SMJHL Hockey!

Task 7 Head to Head:

Head to Head; Richard D’amour(VAN) vs Brandon Girard(DET)

Let’s take a look at two young defensive players who show all the promise in the world. One more of a defensive wall the other an offensive defensemen that still plays both ways pretty well. While they were both pass first guys as they played with some pretty amazing forwards they both had pretty solid stat lines

Richard D’amour 8G 14A 22pts +6 55 Hits 42 SB
Brandon Girard 6G 18A 24 -3 38H 7 SB

You can see Richard D’amour dominated Brandon Girard in not only hits, but also shots blocked. It could be said that D’amour had the better season overall. I don’t think this will be the last we here of this rivalry both of these guys are proven hard workers with the desire to win. Both of these guys will be in the top pairing of their respected clubs next season and will continue battling throughout their careers. Vancouver and Detroit definitely won the draft with taking these two studs!

Hats off to D’amour for winning the first chapter of what hopes the be an interesting battle between two of the hottest rookies in the SMJHL. Both project to be early first round picks in the SHL, it will interesting to watch them develop!

New England was the obvious favorite and powerhouse to win the eastern playoff picture. With three games in hand against Manhattan they were already watching the games between Edmonton and Seattle. But then they got too comfy. Maxy had spike everybody's drink with steroids, and with that the Rage battled back to force game seven. It was at that moment when Wikstrom threw down the clipboard, smack Tsizling in the face, apologized, and then pumped up the whole team with a rebel yell.

Edmonton, too, was favored to win the west. But unlike New England, Seattle was actually behind faceing elimination in Game 6. GoB-knobber stood tall in game 6, commanding his team to what looked like complete victory. However, despite how smelly he is, Muller was able to lead the charge back against Seattle and win it in game 7 except for Andy who smelled too much.

5. TSN Turning Point

The Blizzard have overcome many odds to make it to this point. After losing their star player in the offseason many pundits speculated that they wouldn’t be able to match the success of previous seasons. Heading into the first series they were up against a tough opponent in the Texas Renegades. They had struggled against them during the regular season and many didn’t expect them to make it out of the first round. However when the series went the length and it came down to game 7, they put all the critics to rest. They Dominated the Renegades and they finally started looking like a team that had that drive to win the cup. There are many talented teams, but the will to win at any cost is rare to come by. After the Texas series the team started to look confident, carrying the winning mindset with them into the conference finals and defeating the Riot in another convincing manner. They were underdogs who played together as a team, everyone doing their part no matter how big or small, to ensure victory. The Blizzard look like a team with heart and determination after making it out of the first round series, and that is an unstoppable combination.

The New England Wolfpack went against the defending cup champs firing from all cylinders. The put everything on net and it allowed them to take a 3-0 series lead. They were one step away from finally reaching the finals and all they needed to do was win one more game against the Rage. The sweep was rejected as the Rage came out in game 4 on a mission. The Rage held the Wolfpack to 2 goals in the last 3 games and pushed them into a game 7. New England have been in this position several times, coming out strong but being unable to finish off a series. In game 7 Tennyson came up big making save after save and that energized the forwards as Kovalenko opened up the score. Soon followed by Russel and unlikely hero, Vsykoc. The Wolfpack didn't let their lead slip as they ended up shutting the Rage's top star Merica. After coming out of that game 7 alive , they were now ready for anything.

They showed they could face adversity and handle one of the leagues best in Merica. This was a huge turning point for them because they earned even more confidence and it showed just how strong there will is to lift the cup.

Task 5 : TSN Turning Point

Turning point for the Edmonton Blizzard might be somewhat hard to point out. They started the playoffs by playing against the Renegades. Lost the first one but then won the next two games. Renegades were down 2-1 at this point but somehow they managed to win next two games making it 3-2 for Renegades. I guess you could say that this moment is the turning point for Blizzard. Need to win the next games if you want to keep on playing. Pretty much nothing to lose. Game 6 , Edmonton wins! and then comes the glorious game seven where Edmonton just destroyed the Texas team 6-1. 4-3 wins and Edmonton goes through to the next round!

On the round two Blizzard faced the Seattle Riot. Again extremely tight series where nobody managed to take decisive lead. The result of that is that another series that went all the way to the game seven! Edmonton kept on playing their own game and won the game seven again and they just keep on going. It all comes down to great group of players and the mental strength of the whole team. The Renegades series and the loss at game 5 just added that extra step to Edmonton´s game.

Task 6: Written 6 - Series Ad

It´s your boy Dark Chocolate here and i just want to remind everybody who might not know this already but the SHL finals are starting! Edmonton Blizzard facing the New England Wolfpack! Both teams playing perhaps the best hockey we have seen in a while.
Nobody is backing down , every hit will be finished. Lot´s of trash talking, perhaps even few fights.. And that is just the players wives.

Can you imagine what is going to happen on the ice? Me neither. It´s going to be epic. I´m sweating little bit, just thinking about all the battles along the boards and borderline illegal stick checking. Mmm.

It´s going to be extremely tight series. Both teams have good change to win it this year. Quite hard to decide who is the favorite. Might come down to which team gets the louder support from the fans , so if you don´t have anything to do in next few weeks... Watch some hockey! Either from tv or if you are near either of the arenas, you might still find some tickets! We got 2 tickets for the game 3. We are going to give those tickets exactly 1 hour from now to the person who gives us the best theme song idea for our morning show! So call now and perhaps it´s your lucky day!

Task 7: If there is difference between the goalies , the team with better goalie usually wins. That is a quote from a famous Finnish hockey prophet Tamminen. With better it can just be one game , not what has happened before. Who is hot and who is not. You win or lose with your goalie. Cold world but it´s true.

Tennyson vs Aittokallio. There is not much separating the two, Aittokallio has 0.911 save% when Tennyson´s save% is 0.913. Tennyson has faced 289 shots , Aittokallio 395 shots. Goals against average for Tennyson is 1.90 and for Aittokallio 2.51.

Against that background Tennyson and the Wolfpack might have slightly better overall defense, not allowing as many shots to be fired towards the goal, but as we often see , few good or bad games from the goalies can turn the series upside down. At the same time , good or bad team efforts are going to show up on the scoreboard as well so we shall see what happens in the finals! Going to be exciting series , both goalies on top of their form. If both teams manage to play without making too many mistakes, without taking too many penalties, the winner is going to be decided between the goalies.

To say this season was a bit out of the ordinary for the New England Wolfpack is an understatement. The Wolfpack; a team that is used to breezing through the regular season - finally faced adversity. Players started gripping their sticks a little tighter, and tension started to rise. Then something crazy happened.

Their starting goalie decided to throw a curveball at the team. He announces his retirement which would take effect at the end of the season. The team had a closed doors meeting after news broke. They've decided that instead of tucking their tails, they would play extremely hard in spite of their hatred for the goalie. Also, to get a few wily veterans much needed rings.

If it wasn't for their goalie completely shocking the team, they may have never fixed what was wrong, and instead spiraled out of control. The 'Pack tweaked quite a few tactics, and lines throughout the remainder of the regular season. This adversity has helped the 'Pack prepare for the long grueling playoff journey, in which they've bounced out early for many years. A rejuvenated Wolfpack team is now running on all cylinders to the Challenge Cup finals. Will this new confidence rocket the Wolfpack to a season 23 Challenge Cup victory?

Task #5: Edmonton has had a tumultuous road to the Challenge Cup, going to 2 Game 7s in the playoffs, and both in dramatic fashion, with many "Turning Points". Usually, the home team doesn't split the initial home games of a best of 7 series, much less lose from the outset of the competition, but the Blizzard did just that in both series, losing 4-1 to Texas off a 3 assist night from Renegade Lionel Byrde in round 1 and a 4-0 shutout loss to Seattle thanks to 3 Riot players having 2 point nights in round 2! Bad losses early provoked the team to win the next 2 games, taking control of both the round 1 series (3-1 and 6-5 scores) and round 2 series (4-1 and 5-3 scores) 2-1. They would again lose the lead by losing 2 straight in both the Renegades series (4-3 and 3-1 scores) and the Riot series (4-1 and 2-1 scores), but the Blizzard would take a strong Game 6 and Game 7 win in both series (5-2 and 6-1 for Texas, 3-0 and 3-1 for Seattle) to ultimately emasculate the other team and leave them for dead as the valiant Blizzard moved further down the road to the Challenge Cup!

Task #6: We're going to take a break here on SportsTalk 790 AM, your home for Houston Sports and we're going to take a minute to pay the bills around here and talk some about the big sports event happening up north. Houston hasn’t had a great hockey team since the Aeros left the Toyota Center, and I know some of you Texans still like lacing up the skates and piddling around in the Galleria. This is for you: the SHL Challenge Cup finals are starting up soon and you got 2 great teams going head to head (more on that later) and there's plenty of chances to catch the greatness of playoffs hockey at Brewingz Sports Bar and Grill! While watching the heated goalie rivalry of Finnish tender Jakub Aittokallio and the American Jermaine Tennyson, Brewingz will be offering the Hat Trick deal: 3 wing baskets, 3 beers, and 3 sides for $33! WC: 202 words

Task #7: The main matchup in the SMJHL Finals comes down to the top performers on the offensive side of the puck. Goalies are usually too underdeveloped to really become "playmakers" or "gamechangers", and defensemen, while important in helping a young goaltender be better, are mainly hitting machines or rudimentary defensive forwards at this stage of their career. The top offensive powers from each squad will be the decisive factors.

Luka Zaitsev, Russia's own, was overshadowed during the regular season by his teammate Andrey Barbashev, but became a force in the playoffs, scoring at a point per game pace! This level of production is seen through 2 series and can be a deciding factor against a tough Detroit team with better defensive qualities than the usual minor-league team's roster. Zaitsev seems to be ready to take the step to glory for his Whalers squad.

Asbjørn Alexandersen is Zaitsev's natural foil in the series, only playing 1 series instead of the Whaler's 2 series, but producing at a higher level than Zaitsev. 8 points in 6 games, matching his goal totals to his assists, is a great accomplishment in a division finals, and worthy of going to the "Big Show." Alexandersen has a runningmate in Ray Pejonis in terms of production, but Alexandersen will have more opportunities in the Finals to ascend and produce higher point totals.

This shows that the forward battle between Zaitsev and Alexandersen will be one of the key factors to determining the 4-Star Cup winner.

The Detroit Falcons journey to the finals is actually one they have taken the previous 2 seasons so they know it well. They know what to expect and more importantly they know what it takes to make it to the finals. A team is only as good as its weakest link, so Detroit management and veterans knew they must support their rookies and help them develop as fast as possible in order to have their game at a high level in time for the post-season. You cannot win a championship with veterans alone, you must have a strong rookie core to support them. The fast development of Detroit’s rookies were a key element in their success this season and allowed them to win the president’s trophy and their 3rd division title as well as 3rd conference championship in a row. If rookies such as Brandon Girard, Ray Pejonis, Kaapo Kekkonen, Elvis Libra, Yorgen Bartenberry, Shayne Gow and even back up goalie Lee Bowden had not developed at the rate they did this season, Detroit would not have achieved as much success. Rookie development along with veteran leadership allowed Detroit to remain the most dominant team in the league and return to the finals for a 3rd straight season. [208]

Task 6.

We’re here at Detroit Radio FM187 to bring you SMJHL Cup Finals action between your own Detroit Falcons and their opponents the Vancouver Whalers! This is going to be an incredible championship match up with both teams boasting some of the top talents in the league! The top 2 point scorers in junior this year Andre Barbashev and Alex Mack will go head to head! Superstars like Asbjorn Alexandersen and Bjorn Knutsen will go up against Luka Zaitsev and Nazar Nishushkin. Defensive studs like Lukas Johnson and Big Manius will go toe to toe with the like of Fernando Pergher and Jordan Uptuck. Rookie stands outs Brandon Girard, Ray Pejonis and Kaapo Kekkonen will tangle with fellow rookies Beau Ballard and Vlad McZehrl. Oh and don’t forget out premier goalie match up between superstars Adam Demko and Erik Lundqvist! These teams battled it out all season and were predicted to meet in the finals and now it’s become a reality! This championship match up has everything you could ever hope for and we guarantee you it will not disappoint! So get your tickets online or at your local ticket vendor and we’ll see you at the game! Task 7.

Falcons Asbjorn Alexandersen v. Whalers Luka Zaitsev

Both of these players were key goal scorers for their teams in the regular season and were again looked to as key players in the post-season. Alexandersen played 12 games for the Champion Detroit Falcons through 2 rounds and Zaitsev played 18 games for Vancouver through 3 rounds. Both were 20 goal scorers in the regular season, Alexandersen having 22 and Zaitsev touching 20. In the playoffs we give the edge to Asbjorn Alexandersen as he scored an incredible 15 points in 12 games with 7 goals and 8 assists. He also had 2 game winning goals and many would say he was more clutch than Zaitsev, especially in the finals. Zatisev played well in the playoffs also with 13 points in 18 games, 8 goals and 5 assists with 1 game winner. A nice performance for any player and he should be proud of what he accomplished, but Asbjorn Alexandersen gets the edge due to scoring 2 more points in 6 less games and having that extra game winning goal, which was we know makes a huge difference in the playoffs. Interestingly enough both players had 51 shots a piece. Again this puts Alexanderson in the lead due to shooting more in less games overall. Alexandersen really stepped up his game in the playoffs and was the MVP for th 4 Star Cup Champion Detroit Falcons. [227]

The Detroit Falcons started the season hot and never really slowed down. They had a few bumps in the road along the way but with a high-power 1st line of Knutsen, Mack, and Alexandersen the Falcons road an insanely high shots for/shots against ratio all the way to the Finals. Players like Kaapo Kekkonen, Ray Pejonis, and Yorgen Bartenberry provided a lot of much needed secondary offense for the Falcons in their pursuit of a 3rd Conference championship in a row. Goalie Adam Demko was great for the Falcons throughout the year coming up with many clutch saves at crucial moments. It's tough to pinpoint any particular moment when the Falcons turned their jets on and began to dominate because they had done so right from the start. GM Esa Anrikkanen had his team built properly, fired up, and ready to go from the drop of the first puck and from then on a Four Star Cup finals appearance became more of an expectation than a dream. The players stepped up big time for the beloved GM and put themselves in the best position every night for success. Thanks for tuning in, that's our TSN Turning Point for the Detroit Falcons.

Written/GFX 7 (3 TPE) - Head to Head

Andrey Barbashev and Alex Mack are the players we're going to compare in the head to head segment of this broadcast. Both players finished at the top of the SMJHL in scoring with Barbashev having a mere 3 point lead over Mack during the regular season. However, in these Season 23 playoffs, Barbashev has dropped to below a PPG pace, a far cry from his regular season production. Andrey Barbashev really needs to pick up his offensive production, particularly his goal scoring, if he wants his Vancouver Whalers to have even an outside shot at winning this final round against Alex Mack's Detroit Falcons. Alex Mack, while struggling a little on his own, has still maintained above a point per game pace in these playoffs. With 7 points against the Scarecrows in the Eastern Conference championship series, Alex Mack was a key cog in this well oiled machine that defeated St. Louis in 6 games. Alex Mack is contributing much more to his team than offense though, as he boasts an astounding 58.62% at the faceoff dot. Andrey Barbashev has taken more faceoffs overall in these playoffs, and while his 52.22% is still good, it pales in comparison to the faceoff prowess that Alex Mack displays.

Well both teams had the challenges of escaping a seven game series at one point in these playoffs. Edmonton went down 3 games to 2 against the Texas Renegades but left their mark in Game 6. The Blizzard scored five goals on Jordin FourFour and they have not looked back from there. The ability to score 6 goals in the final game 7 sealed their path to the second round. New England's turning point had to be the first period of their game seven matchup with the Manhattan Rage. Fresh in peoples minds, the early two goals against C.J. James had the Wolfpack up early and they didn't end up letting that lead slip away. Going seven games is not ideal but both these teams were on different ends of the series before they got there. We are not sure where to rank the Wolfpack collapse after taking a 3-0 lead in the Manhattan series at. One could say game seven can't be a turning point if the team gave up a very sizeable lead, maybe the Wolfpack got too complacent. Edmonton on the other hand was in a dogfight and coming back from their 3-2 deficit allowed them to ride some momentum into the next round.

Task 5(3 TPE) - TSN Turning Point

Round 1. Game 6. Beginning of the 2nd period. Texas 1, Edmonton 0.

The Blizzard are in the face of elimination, lose this game and the Renegades surpass them onto the 2nd round to face what would end up being the Riot, and they're down 1-0 to boot, nevermore this season had they faced this adversity. Now a member of the renegades in full pride took an unnecessary jab to poke just the right buttons Edmonton needed:

shoulda signed in texas when you had the chance

Now flash back to the offseason, Aviad Ratzon was on the FA market and had narrowed his decision down to TEX/EDM and ultimately chose Edmonton. Ratzon was a massive factor leading up to this game, and following this jab he and his Blizzard would rally from this early deficit. Edmonton would come back to win the game 5-2 sending it to a 7th and deciding game and haven't looked back since.

Moving on to the 2nd round to face the lower seeded Riot they were know self confident and aware of their ability to come through in the face of adversity as they found themselves in the same situation; down 3-2 going into game 6. This experience of Round 1 fueled their confidence and ablity to usurp the Riot in games 6 and 7 and will give them the confidence needed to succeed vs the Wolfpack
