I didn't do the survey, but IDK if people are really "bipolar".

I am medically labelled as bipolar and that I have severe depression, but honestly, those to me are just labels. I'm a normal guy, who just struggles more than others mentally.
It's an actual disorder, yes. It doesn't define who you are, but it describes the disorder, in the same way that a person with diabetes has... diabetes. The difference in the way the two are understood and the way people react to them lies in the stigma associated with mental health problems.

I think 701 might mean that bipolar disorder is one of those that people don't necessarily get officially diagnosed with, but feel they have because of mood swings / mental volatility / etc. My condition was labelled "anxiety induced bipolar disorder" by doctors, for instance. First it was purely an anxiety problem, and then when I became more aware of triggers it really sent me into another mental plane. Sure didn't make college fun, heh.

The truth is that it's not some umbrella term, though. It's a legitimate mental illness that, if not checked with therapy or meds or something, can lead to some horrible shit.

This. Many people take bipolar as just a sudden mood swing.

I'd like to say last answer felt kind of odd- there was no option for wanting to receive professional help but not having the means, which is where I've been. My answer would have been different, as it stands I don't even remember what I answered, probably have support from others.

Sorry, I tried to cover all the bases but I am only human. You're absolutely right though.

Survey proves that SHL HO should be hiring a professional mental health therapist to assist members who need it.

Will you be releasing the results of the write in portion?
These are in now, forgot them earlier.

Decided to do some deeper analysis cause I was bored (and SurveyMonkey's analysis tools are pretty fun).

The first thing I broke down was how long people had been on the site for. The first group was 11+ seasons (21 members), the second group was 5-10 seasons (17 members) and the third group was 4 or less seasons (22 members).

Currently mentally healthy:
33% - 11+ seasons
59% - 5-10 seasons
57% - 4- seasons

Currently addiction-free:
60% - 11+ seasons
82% - 5-10 seasons
58% - 4- seasons

Liked themselves:
52% - 11+ seasons
59% - 5-10 seasons
64% - 4- seasons

Life is good:
19% - 11+ seasons
53% - 5-10 seasons
50% - 4- seasons

For the most part, it seems like our newer members are more mentally healthy. This does not suggest that the SHL causes mental illness, but rather that mentally healthy people are less inclined to join an online community, which makes sense to me.

More analysis while I kill time on the trade deadline. This time the split was between those that said they are mentally healthy (29 members) and those who didn't (30 members).

Currently addiction-free:
79% of mentally healthy
56% of not mentally healthy

Liked themselves:
83% of mentally healthy
27% of not mentally healthy

Life is good:
66% of mentally healthy
13% of not mentally healthy

Considered suicide in the past year:
0% of mentally healthy
33% of not mentally healthy

Lastly, I split between those that liked themselves (35 members), those who didn't (9 members), and those who didn't really care either way (16 members).

Currently mentally healthy:
71% of people who like themselves
25% of people who said "meh"
11% of people who dislike or hate themselves

Currently addiction-free:
74% of people who like themselves
57% of people who said "meh"
50% of people who dislike or hate themselves

Life is good:
60% of people who like themselves
19% of people who said "meh"
0% of people who dislike or hate themselves

Considered suicide in the past year:
6% of people who like themselves
25% of people who said "meh"
44% of people who dislike or hate themselves

Feels like they need help:
17% of people who like themselves
31% of people who said "meh"
22% of people who dislike or hate themselves

That last one boggles me.

I've personally never visited with a professional. I've either been too embarassed to say something or I've downplayed the potential seriousness of it because the feeling tends to come and go, but it's been coming and going for 8 years now. Odd that you mention the 8-10 year median delay, Tanner.
I ended up finally going to talk with a professional and got prescribed some SSRI's. Hopefully they work well.

That is so good to hear!

Not all medication works for everybody. I got lucky and the first one I tried worked for me, I hope that this is the case for you. I'll keep you in my prayers, and if you ever need anything, I spend way too much time on the SHL so I'm around.

Cheers
