Montreal Impact :impact: 2 @ 1 raiders Halifax Raiders

1st period
No Goal

Penalties :
Lord Vader (MTL) for Roughing (Minor) at 2:26
Leo Yakimov (MTL) for Slashing (Minor) at 4:48
Michael Burch (MTL) for Hooking (Minor) at 9:09
Bastien Salabanzi (HAL) for Roughing (Minor) at 11:28
Bastien Salabanzi (HAL) for Tripping (Minor) at 14:45

Penalties, penalties, and more penalties in period one. Lots of uneven play. But both goalies were up to the task. Robert Andersson stopped 7 shots, Brett Broadway stopped 6, and that was enough to keep each other off the board in the first frame. Not too many chances, considering both teams had multiple power play opportunities.

2nd period
1. Montreal Impact , Dane Rowe 3 (Mikelis Grundmanis, Hugh Johnson) at 4:23 (PP)
2. Halifax Raiders , Reinis Aumeisters 1 (Alexander Sorensen, Erik Muller) at 8:59

Penalties :
Ignant Ogorodnikov (HAL) for Interference (Minor) at 1:22
Arik Mikita (HAL) for Hooking (Minor) at 4:03
Michael Gerrard (MTL) for Hooking (Minor) at 13:49
Arik Mikita (HAL) for Hooking (Minor) at 17:47

More power play chances in period two. Montreal converted their only one of the period, but Halifax went 0 for 3. But they would not be denied, as Reinis Aumeisters scored nine minutes into the period to even it up. The period would end tied 1-1. Would Halifax get any more power play chances in the third, and more importantly, would they be able to convert?

3rd period
3. Montreal Impact , Jordan Mack 3 (Evgeni Karpotsov, Mikelis Grundmanis) at 2:22 (PP)

Penalties :
Conall Macleod (HAL) for Holding (Minor) at 0:35
Clayton Fuller (HAL) for Fighting (Major) at 5:03
Mikelis Grundmanis (MTL) for Fighting (Major) at 5:03
Sesugh Uhaa (MTL) for Hooking (Minor) at 8:01
Troy Lizben (HAL) for Hooking (Minor) at 10:39
Dominic Weber (MTL) for Interference (Minor) at 18:01

Robert Andersson is having a stellar year in net for the Impact. He was equal to the task of keeping top scorer Conall MacLeod out of the scoring chart, which is a tough one in itself. Jordan Mack scored two minutes in on the power play, giving Montreal the lead back. That would be all they need, as the score would stand at 2-1!

Shea Robinson (PGF) for Holding (Minor) at 5:17
Sergei Volchenkov (COL) for Roughing (Minor) at 10:02
Dean Banger (PGF) for Slashing (Minor) at 13:32
DJ Stanley (PGF) for Tripping (Minor) at 19:47

Not too much action to report on in Period 1, beside the fact that the Firebirds were in the penalty box three times, one which would carry over into the second. The Mammoths had 11 shots in the frame, but could not put any of them in the back of the net.

2nd period
1. Colorado Mammoths , Don Pellegrino 6 (Kristoffer Ruud, Charlie Conway) at 0:06 (PP)
2. Prince George Firebirds , DJ Stanley 3 (Eoin MacGregor, Shea Robinson) at 3:56 (PP)

Penalties :
Sim Browski (COL) for Holding (Minor) at 2:51
James Marushin (PGF) for Boarding (Minor) at 13:34

The Mammoths struck six seconds in to Period number 2, right off the faceoff. Conway won the draw, sent it back to Kristoffer Ruud, who slid it across to Don Pellegrino, who’s drive put the Mammoths up 1-0. Around four minutes later, the Firebirds struck back with DJ Stanley’s third tally of the season. The period ended 1-1.

3rd period
3. Prince George Firebirds , Shea Robinson 4 (Eoin MacGregor, Luke Fleming) at 7:52 (PP)
4. Colorado Mammoths , Don Pellegrino 7 (Potato Chips, BJ Subban) at 10:42 (PP)

Penalties :

Cynthia Taylor (PGF) for Hooking (Minor) at 18:47

Shea Robinson put the ‘Birds up 2-1 with his fourth goal of the season, but that was soon answered by Don Pellegrino’s second of the game, and seventh of the season. A late penalty on PGF would carry into OT, the score tied 2-2.

Overtime #1
No Goal

No Penalty

Two shots apiece here, not too much else to report on in the overtime period. Lemieux and Tocchet weren’t all that challenged in this period.

Shootout
Penalty Shot by Charlie Conway for Colorado Mammoths - Stopped by Tim Tocchet
Penalty Shot by Jaxson Reynolds for Prince George Firebirds - Stopped by Austin Lemieux
Penalty Shot by Potato Chips for Colorado Mammoths - Stopped by Tim Tocchet
Penalty Shot by Scotty Reay for Prince George Firebirds - Stopped by Austin Lemieux
Penalty Shot by Tony Pellegrino for Colorado Mammoths - Goal!
Penalty Shot by Sparks Lightning for Prince George Firebirds - Stopped by Austin Lemieux

The shootout was quite the exciting one! After both teams had their first two chances saved, the Mammoths would break through. Tony Pellegrino dashed in, not bothering with flashy moves. He broke write to the net, and with an extremely quick release, flicked it by Tim Tocchet, reverse side. Pellegrino didn’t leave the young goaltender much time to react, as he is one of the fastest Colorado skaters. Austin Lemieux would make a splendid save on Sparks Lightning to end it, giving the Mammoths the 3-2 win by way of the shootout. The silver lining for the Firebirds is that they still got one point in the standings.

3 Stars
1 - Don Pellegrino Mammoths
2 - Shea Robinson Firebirds
3 - Eoin MacGregor Firebirds

PGS Games 63 and 64

Knights Kelonwa Knights VS Scarecrows St. Louis Scarecrows

SMJHL game number 63 featured the Kelonwa Knights at the St. Louis Scarecrows. The first period started out with a bang. There were an incredible seven shot attempts in the first 28 seconds of the game. Stragglers were rushing to their seats to see what all the fuss was about. Those straggles got the chance to witness a repeat of the first flurry when another eight shot attempts were made by the 3:21 mark of the first period. It looks like both these coaches are taking their Corsi and Fenwick stats a little too seriously. There was a third flurry of shots around the 8:30 mark, with Steve French in the box for roughing.
Shortly after the first penalty was killed by the Scarecrows, Aftred Holdiday was sent away on a 2 minute vacation for hooking at 10:09. The scarecrows were able to kill the second penalty, but just 42 seconds later Sven Bartok opened up the scoring from Naeem Chamas and Alphonse Oduya. The line stayed out on the ice after the goal and struck again late in an extended shift when Bartok struck again after tracking down his own missed shot. The time of the goal was 14:14. Then, about two minutes later the game was put nearly out of reach when Yakov Pinehero hit Manio Makinen and then laid the lumber on Jonathan Lundberg. Tony Flow picked up the loose puck and buried it for the three goal lead. Shots on goal for the period were Kelonwa 12 and St. Louis 3

The second period got off to a more normal start with a few less chances. At 5:23 Chris Crutchfield drew blood for the Scarecrows, scoring off of a deflected shot by Eugene Feist. The Scarecrows continued the comeback when John Beckner scored after picking up the puck off the boards after a shot by the same Eugene Feist and putting away the rebound. Much of the rest of the second period was marred by penalties. The Scarecrows remained on the penalty kill most of the rest of the period, but got out of the period behind by only one goal. In fact, despite taking three minor penalties in the period, the Scarecrows outshot the Knights 8 to 1 in the period.

In the third period, The Knights resumed their dominance, outshooting the Scarecrows 11 to 4. Tony Flow scored his second of the game and seventh of the season at 7:55 on the power play with John Matthews in the box for hooking. After the goal, Christoffer Bjornsson had the rest of the night off as Oliver Scholz relieved him between the pipes. Alphonse Oduya scored his fourth of the year from Sven Bartok and Dolph Ziggler at 10:32 to make it 5 to 2 in favor of the Knights. Finally, Ben Troy scored his second of the year from Clayton Goode and John Wick to make it 5 to 3 at 14:49. The Scarecrows second attempt at a comeback was extinguished when John Beckner was called for interference at 15:32.

It has been a streaky year for the Knights, who have been alternating winning and losing streaks since the start of the year. The win against the Scarecrows put the Knights back at 0.500. They are currently enjoying a three game winning streak.

[Image: 2ut59pt.png] Prince George Firebirds VS :impact: Montreal Impact

In SMJHL game number 64, the Firebirds took on the Impact in Montreal. All we needed in this game was a bench clearing brawl and it might have looked like a throwback to the 1970s. There were no less than eleven penalties called in the game, all minors. Cynthia Taylor was sent to the sin bin just 15 seconds into the game on a roughing call.

On their first power play opportunity the Impact were unable to generate many chances. Only seconds after the first penalty was killed, James Marushin was called for high sticking. Then, at 3:07, Jordan Mack backed up the truck in front of the net and delivered on the power play for his fifth of the year to make it 1 to 0 Montreal. Jordan somehow tracked a Grundmanis shot that went high off the glass and bounced out in front. On the ensuing face of the Impact fourth line did their job and forced a faceoff in the Firebirds zone. At 3:33 the Impact went ahead 2 to 0 on a great transition play capped by Adam Falk. Falk lost the faceoff, and the Firebirds went on the attack. Dominic Weber broke up a play in the Impact zone and quickly got the puck over to Vader. Vader took the put through the neutral zone, in over the line, and flipped the puck across to Weber. Weber found Falk deep beside the net and Falk was able to get the puck over an outstretched pad from in close. Late in the period, with Michael Burch off for roughing, Dean Banger banged in a rebound of a deflected shot by Scott Robertson at 16:02. Shots on goal for the period were Impact 13 and Firebirds 4.

Early in the second period, the Firebirds tied the game at two again on the power play when Scott Robertson scored from Cynthia Taylor and Luke Flemming at 2:54. For much of the remainder of the period, the Impact had the edge in puck possession and shots on goal. Then Eoin MacGregor took a holding penalty at 18:13. Impact captain Mikeis Grundmanis scored on the powerplay at 18:38. Hugh Johnson retrieved a loose puck and hit Grundmanis in stride in the neutral zone; and from there, Grundmanis did the rest himself. Shots on goal for the period were Impact 13 and Firebirds 6.

The Firebirds finally took flight in the third period, outshooting the Impact 12 to 5. The only goal of the period however, came off the stick of Michael Gerrard. Dominic Weber intercepted a pass again in the Montreal zone to start the play. A remarkable seven passes later, Gerrard deposited the puck into the net for his eighth goal of the season. Despite the loss, Shea Robertson, Eoin MacGregor and Dean Banger were solid for the Firebirds. Any of them could have been considered for one of the game’s three star awards. Rookie Lord Vader was chosen as the game’s first star for his even strength play in this penalty plagued affair.
