141 Detroit Falcons vs Colorado Mammoths
A complete blowout took place Wednesday between the Falcons and the Mammoths. Before this day I never knew how a massive beast like a Mammoth could be dismembered to such a degree by a small bird… but now I understand. First Period All was quiet in the first period, truly the definition of the calm before the storm. The only marker of what was to come was Yorgen Bartenberry’s play. He embarrassed the defenders to score his first of three on the night. The period ended 1-0 Detroit. Second Period – Otherwise Known as the Day the Mammoths Died I am not sure what happened in the intermission but Colorado forgot how to play hockey. Wolff lost his temper getting a double minor for roughing which resulted in two power play goals for Detroit. Kein Monesti’s first of three in the period and Bartenberry’s second. Wendell Luna and Monesti put on a clinic for the rest of the period making dazzling plays left and right connecting for two more goals in the last two minutes of the period. At the end of the period Detroit was up 5-0 and had unloaded 16 shots in the second period alone. Third Period Colorado tried to save face and managed to punish Detroit for some cocky mistakes early including an absentminded delay of game penalty was given to Luna for launching the puck into the stands, which resulted in a PP goal. Now it was 5-1. Two minutes later Dickie Pecker scored to make it 5-2. Would there be a comeback? The short answer is no. Despite the valiant opening to the final frame they could not maintain this level of effort. Goaltender Jacob Andrews took all momentum out of Colorado’s sails with a horrible slashing penalty and the rest of the period went to Detroit. With two minutes left and still down three goals Colorado stopped skating and Detroit drove the nail home, with goals from Yorgen Bartenberry and John Langabeer. Final Score: 7-2 Detroit. The game was a truly pathetic outing for St Louis and the score should have been much worst. First Period Neither team took control in the first period despite having many opportunities to do so. All together half the first period was played on the power play for one team or the other. The penalties included multiple roughing penalties and a brutal slashing penalty from a frustrated Johnny Cahill. St Louis only managed three shots in the entire period. Second Period The second period ended in a 1-1 tie. St Louis even looked competitive early on as strong defensive play led to Cahill sending Ryan King on a breakaway where he made no mistake beating the goalie blocker side. Despite playing better they were still outshot 10-6 and Vancouver was able to find the back of the net thanks to Alexei Orlov. Cody Black picked up a rebound and was going to launch it into the open net but Cahill valiantly blocked the shot… unfortunately Cahill’s defensive partner was out of position and Scholz hadn’t recovered so Orlov was able to put the puck in the net making it 1-1, which is how the period ended. Third Period The third period for St Louis was one of the weakest periods of hockey I have ever seen. Somehow the Scarecrows only managed to get two shots on net in the whole period. Even worse than their three shot first period! This level of incompetence was honestly impressive. Undisciplined play did not help their cause either as French, Holiday and Feist all took lazy stick penalties for being out of position. The third of these resulted in the GWG goal by Texas prospect Rick James, his eighth of the season. Final score: 2-1 Vancouver. Words: 313 |
