Game 19: Mammoths Colorado Mammoths (7) vs. Knights Kelowna Knights (2)

Game 19 was a high scoring event for the Colorado Mammoths who only outshot the Kelowna Knights by two (27 M - 25 K), but bested them in scoring with a final tally of 7-2 in regulation.

1st Period:

It was a good start for the Knights, who opened the scoring early at 2:05 in the first period with a shot from Niall Brannan off an assist from Mikko Linna. The Mammoths responded two minutes and five seconds later with a goal from David Dvorak (Ashe Moon, Aleksander Stromberg) at 4:10, but the Knights regained the lead at 7:03 with a power play goal from Dolph Ziggler (Sludge, Alphonse Oduya). It looked like it was going to be a back and forth kind of game until three more goals from Colorado went unanswered (Ashe Moon from Jyri Jolo and Aleksander Stromberg at 13:12, Arik Mikita from Jaxson Reynolds and Kristoffer Ruud at 14:41 [PP], and Jaxson Reynolds from Arik Mikita and Tony Pellegrino at 15:57 [PP]).

The first period saw four penalties, 3 from Colorado and 1 from Kelowna.

2nd Period:

The second period saw three more penalties against the Mammoths and two against the Knights, but neither team’s power play units were able to capitalize on the man advantage. The lone goal of the period was scored by Colorado’s Aleksander Stromberg off an assist from David Dvorak at 7:31.

3rd Period:

Colorado scored twice more in the third period (Tony Pellegrino from Sim Browski and BJ Subban at 8:22, and Potato Chips from Kristoffer Ruud and Tony Pellegrino at 13:20 [PP]), clinching their heavy victory against Kelowna. There were four penalties in the period (Knights 3, Mammoths 1), and only one power play goal scored by Colorado.

Notes:

The Knights power play struggled all night, going 1 for 6, while the Mammoths had a little more luck scoring 3 goals on 6 attempts.

Knights goalie Mikke Laukkanen was replaced with Christoffer Bjornsson at 15:57 in the first period after allowing 4 goals on 6 shots.

Game 20: Firebirds Prince George Firebirds (1) vs. Falcons Detroit Falcons (2) - OT

In game 20, the Detroit Falcons outshot the Prince George Firebirds 22-13, but were unable to clinch a win in regulation, pushing the game into overtime for a 2-1 Falcons victory. It was a low scoring game with no goal production in eight power play opportunities.

1st Period:

The lone goal of the first period was scored by Rising Hippo of the Detroit Falcons at 2:37. Erik Muller and Mattias Theib were credited with the assists.

Shots for this period were 9-3 in favor of Prince George, but they were unable to convert on those scoring opportunities.

The end of the period saw two penalties, a minor from Bennett Jones (PGF) for Interference at 13:59, and a minor from Quinn Stevenson (DET) for High sticking at 14:45.

2nd Period:

The second period was peppered with both major and minor, but remained scoreless. The penalties were as follows:

Erik Muller (DET) for Fighting (Major) at 0:47
Saint Jericho (PGF) for Fighting (Major) at 0:47
Jason Torte (PGF) for Hooking (Minor) at 4:12
Mattias Theib (DET) for Interference (Minor) at 12:55
Saint Jericho (PGF) for Hooking (Minor) at 19:09

Detroit outshot Prince George in this period 5-1.

3rd Period:

The third period saw three minor penalties against the Firebirds (Alex Durham for Hooking at 1:16, Dean Banger for Roughing at 6:07, and Saint Jericho for Tripping at 9:11)
and one Firebirds goal from Donald Trump 1 (Mikko Kvi, Mattias Wahlstrom) at 8:22. Shots in this period were 13-3 in favor of Detroit. With detroit unable to answer Trump’s goal, the game went to overtime.

OT:

A Detroit Falcons goal from Elias Lehner (William Fedorov) settled the game in overtime at 1:11. There were no overtime penalties. The Falcons outshot the Firebirds in overtime 1-0.

Notes:

Both teams were 100% successful on the penalty kill. Prince George held Detroit’s power play scoreless on 6 attempts and Detroit kept Prince George at bay on 2 attempts.

Erik Muller and Saint Jericho’s fight at 0:47 of the 2nd period ended in a draw, resulting in a fighting major for both players.
