Announcement

After the assigned transfer of Charlyb’y to Austria, Austria was still in need of an active #6 defenseman. One name stuck out on the unassigned list and that was Hunky Monkey of Prince George. We threw together a proposal and was able to get him on board with us to replace Eichel Jordan who had gone inactive. What is the neat thing about the transfer is that both him and Malkin are the younger members of the SHL in terms of real age and are now part of Austria. Even though they were not on the same line together, one day they could anchor a strong Austrian defense since Malkin is more of a two way offensive type of player while Monkey is more of a stay at home type. They should compliment each other well down the road.

Game Recaps

Game 1 – Lativa Latvia vs Austria Austria
The first period of the first game of the tourney was quiet for both teams as neither one of them could score as Austria outshot Lativa 14 to 7. It seemed like the second period was destined to end scoreless as well, but Austria received a late power play chance and Flamel would score with assists going to Kinsler and Pellegrino. Austria would add two more goals in the back half of the third period as Bursyuk and Brojled each netted their first and Berger would not allow any goals in for his first IIHF shutout as Austria won 3 to 0. Lativa would actually come back and outshoot Austria 31 to 30 in the game, but Berger was the difference in goal and earned the number one star of the game for his efforts. Pellegrino and Kinsler each had two assists in the win. Flamel led the team in shots in 5 shots, Vader led the team in hits with 5 and shot blocks with 3 and Charlyb’y was 5 for 10 on faceoffs.

Game 2 – Austria Austria vs Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia
Austria scored the only goal of the first period as Pomery scored his first goal of the tourney on assists from Flamel and Vader late in the period. The Czech’s outshot Austria 9 to 6. However, that was end of the good news for Austria as the Czech scored five times in the second period, including 2 goals in the first 37 seconds of the second period, to take a commanding 5 to 1 lead in the game. Just 4 seconds into the period Laflamme, then Satan scored on the power play just 33 seconds later. Then Satan scored his second of the game a little more than 7 minutes later and about six minutes after that, he completed his natural hat trick with his third and final goal of the game. Szlerchek finished out the scoring in the period with his first and the rout was on. Neither team scored in the third period as the Czechs fired 40 shots on goal compared to 25 for Austria in the 5 to 1 win. Berger made 35 saves in the loss. Kinsler had 4 shots while Cahill had 3 shot blocks and a whopping 11 hits to lead Austria. Charlyb’y was 5 for 16 on his faceoffs.

Game 3 – Austria Austria vs USA Usa
Coming off of a tough loss, Austria faced the USA and Austria would jump out to a 1-0 just under three minutes into the game as Bursyuk scored his second of the tourney with Kinsler and Pellegrino getting the assists on the goal. Both teams would only have five shots on goal in the period as Austria held onto a 1-0 lead. The USA would outshoot Austria 12 to 2 in the second period and would tie the game just over two minutes into the second period on the power play as Reid scored his first. However, Austria would score to make it 2 to 1 later in the second period as Bursyuk netted his second of the game and 3rd overall. Kinsler picked up another assist as did Vader on the goal. The USA outshot Austria 9 to 3 in the third period and 26 to 10 overall for the game, but Austria did not give up the tying goal in the final period as they won the game 2 to 1. Berger made 25 saves in earning the third star of the game. Bursyuk had two goals to be the number one star while Kinsler had 2 assists to be the number two star. Cahill dished out 9 hits this game along with 3 shot blocks to lead Austria while Charlyb’y was 4 for 8 on faceoffs.

Game 4 – Canada Canada vs Austria Austria
Austria again scored the only goal of the first period in a game as Kinsler found the back of the net just 21 seconds into the game for a 1-0 Austria lead. Bursyuk and Pellegrino assisted on the goal as Austria outshot Canada 8 to 6 in the period. Just short of four minutes into the second period, Flamel scored his second of the tourney for Austria to put them up 2-0. Vader and Pomery got the assists. Brojled made it 3-0 Austria a little bit later with her second goal as Gan and King assisted. Canada would strike back before the end of the period when Horvat scored to make it 3 to 1, but Austria would not cave and would score a power play goal with just 8 seconds left in the period to increase their lead to 4 to 1. The goal was scored by Cahill, his first, from Kinsler and Flamel. Canada would cut the lead back to two again just under three minutes into the third period but thirty seconds later, Flamel would score his second of the game and the last goal of the game to give Austria a 5 to 2 win. Pomery and Vader got the assists. Canada outshot Austria 32 to 28 in the game and 15 to 8 in the third. Berger made 30 saves. Brojled led in shots with 4 while Vader had 7 hits and Cahill had 4 shot blocks. Charlyb’y only won 4 out of 16 faceoffs.

Game 5 – USA Usa vs Austria Austria
Typically, Austria beats USA by one goal in the first game and then in the second game, USA crushes Austria. Austria would score the only two goals of the first period for a 2-0 lead as Lehner scored early in the game again for Austria and Gan would score his first late in the period. USA only had one shot on goal in the period. However, they crushed Austria 18 to 8 in the second period and outscored them 3 to 1 as the game went into the third period tied at 3 to 3. Kinsler scored the lone Austrian goal, his second of the tourney, while the USA got goals from Reid, Russell and Jesster. Normally, Austria would fall apart in the 3rd period in a game like this, but not this time as Laine and Gan scored third period goals and the Austrian defense limited the USA to just 5 shots as Austria won 5 to 3. Berger made 21 saves for his 4th win in 5 games. Gan had 2 goals, while Pomery, Brojled and Kinsler each had two points. Pomery and Vader were both a +4, Kinsler had 9 shots, Hunky Monkey had 7 hits and Vader had 2 shot blocks to lead their categories. Through 5 games in this tournament, Austria is 4 and 1 and in first place and has won more games than many of their previous tournaments.

Game 6 – Austria Austria vs Canada Canada
Ah yes, the return match in the first game of the back half of the round robin that would find Austria to struggle to get points. Canada absolutely dominated the first two periods of the game outshooting Austria 27 to 12 and outscoring them 4 to 0 behind goals from King, Longford, Einstein and Kane as the Canadians flexed their international muscle. Austria did score early in the third period as Flamel netted his 4th, but they couldn’t get another goal the rest of the game while Boychuk added a late goal for Canada to make the final score 5 to 1. Shots were 35 to 20 in favor of Canada. Berger made 30 saves in taking the loss. Flamel had 6 shots on goal to lead Austria while Laine had 6 hits and King led with 3 shot blocks. Charlyb’y was 8 for 14 in the faceoff circle.

Game 7 – Austria Austria vs Latvia Latvia
Even though Latvia outshot Austria 14 to 8 in the first period, the game remained scoreless as both goalies were on top of their game early on. Latvia again took it to Austria in the second period by once again outshooting them 15 to 6, but could only score one goal compared to none for Austria. Johnson scored the goal, his first of the tourney as Latvia took a 1-0 lead into the final period. Latvia was hanging on, but with less than four minutes left in the game, Brojled scored her 3rd of the tourney to send the game into overtime even though Austria was outshot 12 to 5 in the third. Neither team scored in overtime as both countries had 3 shots on goal. Berger stopped the first two shooters while Austria was stopped once and missed the net twice and then Hamilton scored the game winner for Latvia as they won 2 to 1 in a shootout. Berger made 43 saves and was named the game’s number one star. Brojled had 8 shots on goal to lead Austria while King had 3 shot blocks and 4 players had 3 hits each in the loss. Charlyb’y was 9 of 13 in faceoffs.

Game 8 – Czechoslovakia Czechoslovakia vs Austria Austria
This was a big game since the Czech destroyed Austria 5 to 1 earlier and the two teams are fighting to get into the medal round. A win would get one country basically close to being in, while the other will have to fight the final two games to get in. Flamel scored his 5th goal of the tourney and the only goal of the first period as Austria went up 1 to 0. Wachter and Vader got the assists on the goal. The Czech scored early in the second period on the power play to tie the game, but with less than five minutes left in the period, Kinsler put Austria back on top with his 3rd goal of the tourney as Cahill and Bursyuk got the assists. Before the period was over however, Laflamme tied the game once again with his 6th as we went into the third period tied at 2. Neither team was able to break through most of the third period until with just over a minute left in the game, Pomery scored his 2nd goal of the tourney to give Austria a 3 to 2 win. Flamel and Vader would assist on the game winning goal and send Austria to the medal round for the first time in a while (maybe ever?). Austria outshot the Czech 19 to 16 in the game. Berger made 14 saves for his 5th win. Flamel and Vader each had two points in the win. Bursyuk led Austria in shots with 4, Kinsler and Laine each had 3 hits and Cahill and Bursyuk each had 3 shot blocks. Charlyb’y was 8 for 12 on faceoffs.

Games 9 and 10

Austria Austria vs UK Uk / UK Uk vs Austria Austria

Austria dropped the first game to the UK 3 to 1 even though Austria opened up the scoring in the game in the second period behind Flamel’s 6th goal of the tourney, but the UK would score 3 straight goals in the third period to take home the win and outshoot Austria 31 to 20 in the process. Collins, O’Callahan and Palat scored for the UK. Berger made 28 saves in the loss. Pellegrino had 4 shots for Austria while Vader led in hits with 3 and Malkin and King each had two shot blocks. Charlyb’y was dominate again on faceoffs by winning 10 of 13.
In the second game, Palat gave the UK a 1-0 lead in the first period but Austria would score the first two goals in the second period to take a 2 to 1 lead. Kinsler netted his 4th and Charlyb’y scored his first international goal and Monkey got his first international point with an assist on the goal. However, the UK would tie the game on the power play in the second period and win the game in the third with the only goal of the period. Killington scored the final two goals for the UK in the 3 to 2 win. Berger stopped 21 shots as his record fell to 5-4-1 in the tourney. Kinsler had 4 shots and 4 hits along with Vader to lead Austria while Cahill added 3 shot blocks. Charlyb’y was 6 for 16 on faceoffs in this game.

Quarterfinals vs Russia Russia

Finishing 3rd in their group, Austria will cross over and play Russia who finished 2nd in their group. Russia is also a former IIHF winner and a great model for Austria to follow in learning how to build up an international hockey program. The nerves were there early on as Russia scored just 8 seconds into the game and then added another one shortly after the period was halfway over for a 2 to 0 lead. However, Austria would go on the power play shortly after the Russian goal and King would score with the man advantage to cut the lead to 2 to 1 after the first period in which Russia outshot Austria 11 to 5. Austria would fire 16 shots on goal in the second but Harter would stop them all while Russia got one goal on 12 shots to take a 3 to 1 lead into the final period. Koroviev scored for Russia. Austria did get one goal back but that was on the power play with just 11 seconds left in the game as Pellegrino scored from Malkin and Kinsler as Russia won the game 3 to 2 even though Austria outshot them 30 to 27. Berger made 24 saves in the loss. Flamel had 10 shots on goal but could not get any past Harter. Cahill had 4 hits and Vader had 4 shot blocks to lead Austria in those stats while Charlyb’y was 9 for 16 on faceoffs in the game.
