William Goddard’s relationship with the media throughout his first season of professional hockey has not been particularly strong. At the advice of his agent, SHL Hall of Fame member Turd Ferguson, the 20-year old English defenseman has generally stayed out of the public eye save for one or two interviews. The new world of the SHL tends to take some time to adjust to, especially for someone as new to the sport of hockey as Goddard.

However, with a full season with the Colorado Mammoths now under his belt and draft day getting closer and closer, Ferguson recently announced that his client would be taking the time to answer any and all questions that the media has for him. We’ll be providing live updates on this page as Goddard takes questions from the media.

-------------

What are some of William's top destinations if he had a choice?
I don’t know if I have a particular favorite but there are a couple that I do like. I think I’d enjoy being on Buffalo and Portland and helping to establish an expansion team, plus I’d like to be on a team with Brandon/TDW or JP. I’d also enjoy being on a rebuilding team so I can help the team out. The Panthers also interest me because they look like a young team, plus I’ve had good experiences with them in the past. I like Hamilton, Texas, Edmonton, and Seattle as well. A lot of teams interest me though, so I don’t know if there are really too many I’d rule out.

Where does William project himself?
It’s tough to say. Realistically, probably a solid second pairing defenseman and a power play specialist. Obviously I’d love to have a lot of individual success - setting some sort of record for assists would be cool. But I’d ultimately just like to build a solid SHL player before focusing on higher goals.

With a deep defensive class what separates him from the rest?
Offensive play and getting assists, mostly. A lot of the defensemen seem to be focused on checking and defense, and the offensive defenseman are more focused on scoring than passing. I am going to build a player with solid defense, but I’d like to get a lot of assists, so Goddard will probably offer a bit more on the power play than some of the other defensemen in this class.

What area of the draft are you expecting to be picked in?
That’s a tough one. I honestly don’t really know for sure where I’m getting picked, and that’s part of why I’m looking forward to the draft. I haven’t really been in contact with any GMs, so I don’t know for sure. Based on what I’ve seen of TPE rankings and mock drafts, I’m expecting to be picked somewhere in the second round. I don’t know where or by who though. I could see myself going anywhere from late in the first round to early in the third round to be honest, but my best guess is early to mid second. Either way I’m really looking forward to seeing what happens and where I end up.

Does the idea of being a longer term prospect on a contending team appeal more to you than being able to play a bigger role on a weaker team immediately?
Either one would be interesting, honestly. But personally, I’d prefer to be on a weaker, rebuilding team and player a larger role. I’d really enjoy developing along with a young team and helping them turn into a contender over time. Plus, I won’t lie, getting some more playing time early on would be nice. I won’t rule out playing for a contender though, playing alongside some better players might fit better with my build since I’m focusing on getting assists.

What's your timeline for playing in the SHL?
I’m thinking 1 or 2 more seasons in the SMJHL. I definitely don’t have enough TPE to go into the SHL and make an impact right away, so at least one season in the minors would probably help. It depends on the team that drafts me though, we’ll see how much space they have for me in their SHL lineup. The chance of winning a four star cup in the SMJHL would definitely be an appealing reason to stay in the minors as well.

How high a ceiling do you see Goddard having as a player?
That’s tough to say. It depends on how long I can stay interested. I think I can definitely reach a solid spot in the majors, but as for Goddard’s ceiling, I’d say maybe a first-pairing defenseman, probably somewhere between 700-900 TPE. That’s a really vague guess though, but at the very least I can see myself sticking with this player for a while regardless of activity.

Is there any NHL players who you keep as a role model?
I have to admit, I don’t really follow the NHL or hockey in general. So I don’t really know for sure. Tongue But according to a quick Google search, Erik Karlsson is probably the closest to what I’m aiming for - an offensive defenseman who doesn’t necessarily hit people a lot, but is a very good passer and solid defensively.

If you could choose, what would be the goal horn sound when you score a goal?
Luckily I don’t think I’d have to worry about that as I probably won’t be scoring too often! But I would like something a bit different to everyone else’s, you know? Like, not as loud or intrusive as the usual goal horn is. I’d like something a bit smoother and more distinguished, like classical music or some jazz. Something to celebrate the true tactical genius of whatever miraculous play went on that somehow resulted in me scoring a goal.

Answered! I skipped the second question as I've pretty much covered it in one of Wasty's questions.
