He was therefore up tosign with any team that offered him a contract. He chose the Prince George Firebirds, presumably because of his previous relationship with current hot goalie Ben Waters. ![]() Trevor: So Steven, how’s Prince George so far? You liking the team, the city? Steven: Well of course, the first day in Prince George was amusing. I got to meet my teammates Eddy, Pollak, O’Brian, Ace and my general managers David Winter and Marek Vyskoc. I had a quick training with the boys. Then, we went to eat some Chinese food because I was the special guest of the day. The last couple of days, I’ve been trying to get the vibe here in Prince George. Trevor (Smiling): Well, your teammates are awesome. Anyways, what is your main goal for this season? Steven: I would say improving because I want to be respected, also a leader for the team. I’ve been a bit late trying to put in the work, but I hope to see myself drafted by a team that really cares about me, not some team throwing their 7th round pick on the guy with the most Asian name on the board. Trevor: Tell me about you and Waters…how do you guys know each other? Steven: We used to be best friends when we were young. He helped me train a lot after being injured in high school. We like to challenge each other like in the practice that we had today where I had to score on him 3 times but couldn't because he was beast. Trevor: With a record of 7/1/1 he is definitely one of the leaders of your team. Steven: Yeah, he’s having a hot start for a rookie. He’s been killing it with his glove saves. In fact, I saw his match against the St.Louis, he was unstoppable and he recorded his first shutout. Trevor: He sure is a great teammate and friend. Trevor: Anyways, who inspired you to be a player? Steven: I would say Dominik Hasek and Ray Bourque. Trevor: Really...why Dominik Hasek? Steven: I used to be a goaltender when I was young but I decided to be a defenseman. Dominik Hasek would inspire me the most his capabilities to carry a team like Buffalo Sabres, same as Ray Bourque where he was a stud in defense and offense for the Boston Bruins. Trevor: Interesting, Tell us about your life as a child Steven: Well I was born in Canada in 1998 where I spent time with my grandmother since I lost both of my parents. I will usually watch hockey at Centre Bell in Montrreal to see the Montreal Canadiens. My uncle made me skate at the age of 4. I would talk about Ray Bourque and Dominik Hasek to my uncle a lot. I had a hard life where I couldn’t really afford getting new equipment so I can practice. But my uncle would give me some new gear when it was my birthday. Trevor: I’m sure your parents are proud of you. Anyways, what was your reaction after signing with the Prince George Firebirds? Steven: Well, I was really happy when I signed the contract. In fact, many of my teammates congratulated me during the morning practice we had that day. It changed my life. I got to meet new teammates, new friends and more. Trevor: Are you excited for your first match in front of many fans? Steven: I am excited but nervous at the same time. I’m sure every rookie during their first match would be excited and nervous during their first match. i want to show my fans how passionate I am for this sport by playing well this match vs the St.Louis. Trevor: This should be enough... anyways we wish good luck for the season Steven: Thank you Trevor Trevor: This is Trevor Luis, when we come back we will recap about the 1st day at the Olympics in Rio. This is Harry Kelly, from Prince George Sports, covering all sports news...let's started the first topic Steven Pham from the Prince George Firebirds We can see after one day, many fans had some high expectations that Steven Pham could be one of the leaders for the team in the future. He could turn out of the best defenseman in the SMJHL. Known to be a great guy, he went to the hospital with many of his teammates after pratice to meet little kids. In fact, he met a child called Dawson. Dawson was a young child of 8 where he had lung cancer. This signing of Steven Pham made some headlines where he rejected an offer with the Montreal Militia to join the Prince George Firebirds to join his old friend Ben Waters. Montreal Militia fans started hating him where this fan on twitter wrote: “Wow, this Steven Pham will regret to not sign with us, Montreal Militia” Having a Height of 6ft2 and being 200lbs he is guaranteed to be a top 6d and can be also a top 4 D. However, his injury while playing in high school made him slow down a bit, but he has been training a lot. This is what his gm told us about him. “Steven is a good defenseman where he can play offensive and defensive. He fits perfectly in the team. Signing him was crucial for us because we needed a defenseman. It’s worth a shot to sign this talented defenseman where he worked really hard after being injured and miss an entire season during high school. We trust him since Ben Waters really knows him. Ben Waters was the one who suggested us to sign Steven Pham. We had some competition with some other team to sign him but he decided to join with us and so far, he doesn’t regretting it. “ In his debut vs the St.Louis, Steven Pham did decent. Actually, his teammates pulled of a prank where at beginning of the match, he had to skate alone in front of many fans. Everyone had a good laugh and PGF won 3-2 in overtime. [Shows clip after 3-2 win vs St. Louis, interviews] Steven? He was decent in his first match with us. He will improve to be a better defenseman alongside with veterans that will teach him how to be a better defenseman –Pollak Ayy my pal Steven Pham did fine, watch him improve after couple of games. I know he will be one of the best defenseman rookies this season. –Ben Waters He was decent; he got a solid hit on Nate Akeson. He is capable to be better and we will give him a lot of chances so he can improve even better. I like his way of playing with the puck. He has sweet hands and can skate really fast as 6ft2. –Head Coach I didn’t expect that prank where I had to skate alone on the ice for some couple of seconds. This is a tradition for welcoming the rookies. I have some awesome teammates and I can’t wait to play even more games. Ace was really good in net today after being a backup for couple of games. He really bounce back with a 3-2 overtime win. Also everyone has been asking about my opinion to the Detroit and Montreal trade. I’ve met Vikstrom before and I can say that he’s going to be one the best forwards for Detroit. You can tell that he had wonderful vs the Halifax where he was name first star with an assist and one goal. Nerokov had a decent debut with his new team the Montreal Militia. I can say he won’t be an immediate impact yet but eventually he’s going to be a stud in Montreal. –Steven Pham. ![]() |
