S31 Regular Season PGS Thread
#1

Post all of your PGS's in this thread. This also doesn't exclude chirping in this thread, that's kind of the point to these: react, reply to someone's PGS, talk shit to each other the way the SHL is meant to be. They're linking the exact post in their claim so my graders don't have to sift through everything, so it's ok to have a bit of back and forth.

Some ground rules:

The grading of these is objective to a point. We're being nice here and not placing a word count minimum you need, but at the same time, we will dock you for just copying and pasting straight from the index or for missing parts of the things to include. The point is to elaborate past the game thread posted in your PGS. If you have any questions about grading, please come talk to me and we can work things out. I'm perfectly ok letting you redo a PGS to get max credit.

Things to Include

**REQUIRED : Header of which 2 teams are playing, the score, brief synopsis of the game, link to game, plus 3 things from the list provided:

* highlight reel (min. 3 gifs or graphics)
* tell a story of the game, journalist or blog style
* some description of the goals (not just, 'he shoots he scores', but the leadup of the play and how it transpired, who was involved)
* 'TSN Turning Points' (e.g. in game 1, the 5 minute major was a key moment in the game)
* team stats breakdown and analysis e.g. Faceoffs, Special teams, something more than just posting the stats seen in the game link
* individual player stats breakdown/comparisons
* interview(s) with players/GMs involved - minimum 3 questions, cannot interview yourself, cannot interview the same person more than once in a season
* interesting trivia or historical matchups, potential playoff implications, etc.

HERE. WE. GO

The first game of the season for both teams on a brand new season. Colorado and Vancouver after early exits in last years playoffs are looking hungry this year hoping to improve upon last years results and prove they deserve to the be in the talks for top tier teams this year.

Period 1

The first period featured a lot of action in the Colorado end as the Whaler came out of the gate ready to play. Having out shot the Mammoths and if not for some timely misses the result could have been even more lopsided for the period.
The 1st wasn't an overly physical period with the teams trading hits, but Ross was on the receiving end twice in quick succession from the Mammoths. It seemed the target for the Mammoths had become clear early in the game.

Vancouver Whalers , Adam Kaiser 1 (Jon Ross, Conklin Owen) at 3:18 (PP)

The first goal of the season is from the Whalers D corps on the powerplay. Kaiser after missing the net on his first chance is quickly given the puck again from Ross and makes no mistake with his second shot from the point cleanly beating Rudnikova and sending the Whalers to an early lead.

Colorado Mammoths , Martin Svensson 1 (Matthew Leetch, Maverick O'Dooley) at 19:54

Even after a face off win the Whalers zone by Ross, the Mammoths were able to apply the pressure to the Whalers immediately and hem them into their own zone. The Whalers found themselves quickly play D again and Svensson when given the puck made no mistake beating Wehner on a screened shot glove side.

-Victims of the Whalers in the first: Svensson | Brooks | Lake | Hagan

Shots - VAN: 9 || COL: 4

Period 2

Having scored a late goal to end the first we entered the 2nd period all tied up. The 2nd period did not produce any immediate offensive for either team and the shot totals were in Colorado's favour this time. The one glaring outcome from this period was both teams turned on the physical sides of their games seemingly hitting almost anything that moves. The Whalers found themselves particularly under siege with Tsujimoto, Bearss and Ross taking the majority of the hits from the Mammoths. Both Goalies refused to budge in their respective creases so we left the period battered and bruised and still waiting for a goal.

The hit parade
- Victims of the Mammoths in the first: Tusk | Latta | Owen | Taro Tsujimoto x2 | Bearss x 2 | Ross x3
-Victims of the Whalers in the first: Goddard | Hagan | Yvel x2 | Garland | Krysak | O'Dooley

Shots - VAN: 7 || COL: 9

Period 3

A very even period for both shots and hits but much like the first period the Whalers found themselves back in the lead early into the period as the Japanese sensation T.Tsujimoto put them ahead once again. Ross although only having to deal with one hit this period had his total brought to 5 for the game. The Mammoths clearly had a target they had in mind heading into this game and executed it. Unfortunaely for Colorado they ended up a bit short this game and dispite a great performance of Rudnikova found themselves going home empty handed.

Vancouver Whalers , Taro Tsujimoto 1 (Frankie Latta) at 0:38)

A face off win in the whalers zone found the puck heading up the ice quikcly from Latta to Tsujimoto as he found himself with some space and made no mistake on the Mammoths goalie putting the Whalers into an early lead here in the 3rd.

3 Stars ***

1 - Maximilian Wehner (VAN)
Stopping 20 of 21 shots posting a SV% of 0.952 earns Wehner the top star for this game being good when called upon and keeping a close game on lock for his team as they squeeked out the win.

2 - Adam Kaiser (VAN)
G:1 || A:0 || PTS: 1 || MP: 21:47
Scoring the 1st goal of the game for his team on the Powerplay Kaiser set the tone early into the game which allowed Vancouver to lock down defensively early and hold the fort against the large amount of PP given to the Mammoths.

3 - Martin Svensson (COL)
G: 1 || A:0 || PTS: 1 || MP: 20:28
The number 1 center for the Mammoths ate up the minutes for them at center and put in the tying goal for the Mammoths late in the 1st to tie the game and keep it close.

Kelowna Knights Knights vs Prince George Firebirds Firebirds
Score: Kelowna 5 - Prince George 0

Game Link
Both of these teams were coming into this game looking to prove that they are the best after disappointing finishes for each of them last season. For the first period it looked like this was going to be a closely fought battle throughout the entire game. However, the wheels quickly fell off the wagon for the Firebirds, as they let in two goals in the first five minutes of the second period to allow the Knights to go up 3-0. The Firebirds would never get back into it, and allowed the Knights to snatch an easy 5-0 win to start off the season.

1st Period

The first period was a low scoring and highly defensive affair. There was only one goal scored in this period off a rocket of a shot by Leafer Reilly of the Kelowna Knights. The goal was created off of an interception in the neutral zone by Knights’ veteran Adriana Starosta. Starosta made a quick give and go pass to Tomas Csonka, allowing here to get around the forward that was covering here. Starosta carried the puck into the Firebirds end, where she made a fancy drop pass to Csonka. Csonka fed it right back to Starosta, who looked to shoot. She was about to take the shot when she looked around and eyed Reilly streak down the opposing wing unopposed. She ripped a pass over to him, allowing Reilly to take the one timer. Reilly took the shot, which hit the shoulder of Waters before trickling in.

(Unfortunately, the colour on the highlight reel were corrupted (or something) making the green look yellow, and white look blue)

2nd Period

The second goal came only 1:20 into the second period off of a quick shot from Alex Light. The play began when Eibhear Sorenson grabbed the puck in the Knights’ end. He made a quick d to d pass to Hohenburg. Hohenburg skated the puck all the way up the ice and into the Firebirds end. Just past the blueline she cut to the middle and left a drop pass for Light. Light picked up the puck and fired a slapper towards the net. The shot flew past Waters and went bar down. This would mark the beginning of the end for the Firebirds.

Alex Light’s goal at 1:20 into the second period

The next goal came only four minutes later at 5:20 into the second period. This one would be Reilly’s second goal on the night. This one would come off a beautiful no look pass by Laraque Obama. Obama came down the left wing looking to shoot. He made a move to shoot, but instead put the puck through the legs off one of the defenders and right onto the stick of Reilly. Reilly easily put the puck into the back of the empty net.

3rd Period

The third period was more of a formality in this game, as the Firebirds looked completely outmatched and ready to head home. This period featured two more goals for the Knights to make this game into a bit of a blow out. The first of this period came 10:17 into the period on the powerplay. The puck was worked into the Firebirds zone by Starosta, who fed it over to Light at the point. Light fired it on net. It missed the net finding its way back to Starosta, who fired it towards the net. It missed again, but Light was able to recover the puck. Light skated to the middle and took another shot on net. The shot missed yet again, luckily for the Knights Hohenburg was well out of position. The puck rebounded off the boards and found Hohenburg, who easily tapped it in on the side of the net.

The fifth and final goal for the Knights came at 13:23 into the final period off the stick of Trevor Wilson. The play came off an interception by Vasily Horvat in the neutral zone. Horvat sent the puck to Geronimo Otto streaking up the right wing. Wilson and Otto both came into the Firebirds end with a head of steam, blowing past the Firebirds players, leaving only Ernesto Castro was left to defend these two superstars. Castro sprawled out looking to block the pass. Otto made a great saucer pass over top of the Castro to find the stick of Wilson. Wilson easily tucked it into the back of the net to put the Knights up 5-0 on the Firebirds.

Three Stars
3: Alex Light: 1G, 1A, 4S
Light was a big part of the Knights’ dominating win today by scoring the goal that would allow the Knights to open up the lead. The Knights’ captain proved my why he has the C out there today.

2: Cara Hohenburg: 1G, 1A, 5S
Hohenburg scored a great powerplay goal for the Knights tonight. She was also an anchor on the defensive end for the Knights all game by shutting the Firbirds down and getting the puck back up the ice quickly.

1: Leafer Reilly: 2G, +2, 4S
Reilly had a very impressive start to his career with two big goals. His first would turn out to be the game winner for Knights, and his second providing a nail in the Firebirds’ coffin.

KELOWNA KNIGHTS Knights VS ST. LOUIS SCARECROWS
FINAL SCORE: ST. LOUIS 4-2 KELOWNA

Kelowna, coming into this game with a thundering win against the Prince George Firebirds, to face the St. Louis Scarecrows who have just come of a loss to the Firebirds, and look bounce back from the loss.

1st period

Opening the scoring, only 3 minutes and 27 seconds in was Geronimo Otto, who came dashing in on Kyle Wahlgren on a great breakaway pass from Trevor Wilson in the defensive zone. Otto had to think quick as he was approaching the goal line very fast. He makes a nice head face, goes to the back hand and buries the puck five-hole.

10 minutes later, Kelowna went on the Powerplay. The Scarecrows weren't having a good time in their own end, as Kelowna fired shot after shot after shot. Finnaly, the Scarecrows caught a break as Kelly Rivet settleted the puck out. As he was going to clear the puck, he saw Jason Visser at the point looking like he had a chance. Rivet dised the puck off the half boards, starting a 2 on 1 with Visser and Kurczewski sprinting down the ice. Kelowna defense were closing in on the 2, and had Visser covered. Visser in desperation threw the puck towards Kurczewski and Kurczewski sniped the puck past Knights goaltender Charlotta Caspari.

2nd Period
The 3rd goal of the game Rhaegar Targaryen at 10:15. The Scarecrows were cycling the puck in the zone. Danny Foster had sauced the puck over to Joe Kurczewski. It seemed as if he was going to one-time the puck, but instead he dished the puck quickly back to the point, where Targaryen took the puck and clapped it past everyone.
[Image: johnny-boychukgoalnetworkedblogs-com.gif]

The 4th goal of the game again from St. Louis only barely a minute after the 3rd goal of the game, again by Joe Kurczewski with a tipped goal. Targaryen and Danny Foster were cycling the puck at the point, until Foster finally decided to shoot. His shot was going well wide, but got a lucky bounce off Kurczewski and into the back of the net.

The Scarecrows scored again, extending their lead by 3 with a 4-1 lead to Kelowna, this time on the powerplay. Kelly Rivet sent the puck towards Dick Dastardly, and Dastardly one timed it passed the young Knights goaltender, for is first SMJHL goal.

3rd Period
The Knights made a last push to try and close the Scarecrows lead, but they never managed to do it. Around 3 minutes into the 3rd period, the fashion twins back at it again with a fantastic goal. Vasily Horvat sends the puck down towards Geronimo Otto. Then Otto send the puck towards Trevor Wilson, streaming down the slot. Wilson controls the puck, then dangles around DarryL Landry and snipes it past Kyle Wahlgren. It was great effort to comeback, the the Scarecrows won the game 4-2.

Three Stars Of the Game

1) Joe Kurczewski (STL)
Kurczewski put on a fantastic show for St. Louis today. He put up 2 goals today, along with another assist. Great show put on my the player.

2) Rhaegar Targaryen (STL)
He had put up 2 solid points today, 1 assist and 1 goal. He was also a plus 3, and had 6 shot blocks.

3) Geronimo Otto (KEL)
Otto was easily the Knights best player today. And so was Wilson. Otto had scored a beautiful breakaway goal to open the scoring, and also assisted on Wilsons fantastic goal.

Game Recap
What was the second game of a series of 3 games between the Scarecrows and the Knights may have finished with the same score as the previous game 2 days prior but it was a much closer affair as St.Louis squeaked out a shoot-out victory over Kelowna to cement their strong start to the S31 season. Kelowna held a 3-1 lead mid-way into the 3rd period before goals from Dos Diablo and Joe Kurczewski brought back the game to square one to force overtime. With both teams seemingly tired from a wild 3rd period, which saw a combined 5 goals scored from both teams, overtime looked to be a period to regain one’s breath before the shootout. In the end, sophomore Kyle Wahlgren showed his experience and out-duelled rookie backup Charlotta Caspari in a game where either team could have taken it at any point.

After the game we got with Kelowna GM, Jenny and asked her a few questions:

Interview This is a second loss to the Scarecrows in two-games (previous game 4-3 loss in regulation), what do you feel is the issue and are you worried about yet another slow start to a season for the Knights?
I'm not worried at all. I think we had a strong showing in our first game with Aittokallio in net, and now that we're giving Caspari a chance to try it out while Aitto plays in Manhattan, I'm still pretty confident. In this game in particular it was pretty evident that our players are just getting tired the longer they're out there, and that's to be expected from our young players. I'm pretty proud of the point we got here tonight, and I think there's nowhere to go but up for the Knights.
Interview Charlotta Caspari played her second careed SMJHL game, due to Jason Aittokallio being called up by the Manhattan Rage for a 6 game tryout. What are your thoughts on how she's played tonight? Does this bode well for the Knights future?
I think Caspari did well. She held her own against Wahlgren and the Scarecrows to the best of her ability, and that ability is only going to grow as well. I think she's shown some tenacity here, and that's what I want to see from my backup goalie as she goes back to working on her training in between games on the bench.
Interview With this result in mind, is it too early to start considering doing line fixes or making any drastic changes to shake the players up or do you believe in stability and gradual progression once the new batch of rookies start to grow?
I think the most we'd do at this point is encourage our skaters to play a little more defensively and just keep in mind the green kid behind them at the moment. Stop taking lots of penalties and really lock it down when we do. Of course, lots of our skaters are rookies themselves, so sometimes we just have to accept that we need to position them in roles that will allow them to shine while they're still improving.

3 Stars of the Night:
1st Star: Kelly Rivet:
Rivet was key for the Scarecrows, especially in the third period as he got the primary assist on both of St.Louis’ goals. He spent just under 25 minutes on the ice, logging one of the highest totals for the Scarecrows. His 2 hits and 4 shots blocked shut down Kelowna and gave St.Louis the opportunities it needed to come back in this game and sneak a win in the shoot-out. Kelly Rivet has become a leader in the locker room for the Crows during this last off-season. Tonight he was a leader on the ice as well.
2nd Star: Michael Burrows:
Many analysts keep talking of the fashin twins, Geronimo Otto & Trevor Wilson, as well as Alex Light to be the key players for Kelowna this season. However one name rarely mentioned is Michael Burrows who’s been getting work done in the shadow of the others spotlight. He had a goal and an assist tonight, and was one of the few players on the ice for the Knights that finished with a positive plus/minus. His 6 shots and 18:44 minutes of ice-time on the second line and special units make him an invaluable asset for the future success of this team.
3rd Star: Cara Hohenberg:
Hohenberg is somewhat of a veteran in this team, as she begins her 3rd season as a Knight. Tonight she was everywhere on the ice for Kelowna, as she assisted on all three goals from her team. Logging in a massive 26:25 minutes of ice-time (the most on either team) the defensewoman is making a statement that even though she may not wear a letter on her jersey, she most definitely is a leader when the time comes to lay the cards on the table.

Defense is the best offense: A statistical comparison of Rivet vs Hohenberg tonight:
Offense wins games. Defense wins championships. This is a well-known and repeated fact throughout all sports. Tonight, both Kelly Rivet and Cara Hohenberg defined the story of the game as they both contributed to their teams’ success. So lets look at their stats and compare:

Kelly Rivet:.......0G | 2A | 2P | +1 | 0 PIM | 1 Shots | 2 Hits | 4 Shots Blocked | 24:46 Mins Played | 4:11 PP Mins | 4:10 PK Mins
C. Hohenberg..0G | 3A | 3P | -1 | 0 PIM | 4 Shots | 1 Hits | 1 Shots Blocked | 26:25 Mins Played | 4:42 PP Mins | 3:54 PK Mins

Rivet is labelled as a two-way defenseman, strong in both sides of the game. Hohenberg on the other side is more of an offensive defenseman, looking to shoot from the blueline and let her forwards take the rebounds to score. Both these styles of play were key to their teams as they combined for a massive 5 points on 6 goals scored. Hohenberg had, as expected, a larger shot total (4-1) and interestingly enough, Rivet had more shots blocked by the same score (4-1). With both players so statistically different, yet logging a similar amount of ice-time the difference came in the form of the plus/minus differential. Kelly Rivet +1. Cara Hohenberg -1. What does this mean? In the second half of the 3rd period, Rivet was clutch for his team in both providing the offensive spark needed to rally from a two-goal deficit and in shutting down the opposition. On the other hand, Hohenberg was a monster from the point with her 3 assists, yet struggles in her own end in spite of that, ending the night with a -1 differential. In short, Kelly Rivet was the leader the Scarecrows needed, and got a win they may not have deserved without him there. Often, a true leader speaks by his actions. And Kelly Rivet’s actions tonight places him as a solid leader for the Scarecrows.

Halifax Raiders 3 ( 0-2-1) at Vancouver Whalers 4 (2-0-0)

Game Link

SETTING THE STAGE

The Halifax Raiders are arguably the most talented team in the SMJHL at the start of the S31 season. The Raiders traveled to Vancouver after dropping their first game by only one goal and losing their second game in a shoot out. The Whalers, who struggled to score goals during the entire preseason, won their only prior contest by a 2 to 1 score.

GAME SYNOPSIS

The Raiders started strong in the first period, winning the majority of the face-offs in the first few minutes of play. The advantage in puck possession paid off when Sepp Reiter and Niklas Flower scored about two and a half minutes apart early in the first period. The Whalers got back in the game on a lay goal by Adam Kaiser at 12:15. A goal by each team late in the second period made the score 3 to 2. The Whalers powerplay unit cashed in twice in the third period to edge out the Raiders 4 to 3. At a glance, special teams play and drawing 6 penalties to the Raiders 3 was the key to the Whalers victory. Shots on goal were roughly even for the game, suggesting that Halifax had the better of the play when they were able to stay out of the penalty box.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

1st Period Highlights

Halifax opened up the scoring at 3:26 of the first period. Sepp Reiter coughed up the puck after a hit by Victor Lindstrom, but Marc Leclerc made a nice play to retrieve the puck, keep it in the zone and get it up the wing to Isaac Kaiser. The initial shot was stopped by Max Wehner, but the rebound went right to the waiting Reiter who put it into the open side for his first SMJHL career goal.

After Halifax made it 2 - 0 on a goal by Niklas Flower from Jean-Luc Reflieux and rough and tumble Greta Iversen, Vancouver scored a key goal to keep them in the game. The Whalers had dumped the puck into the Halifax zone on a line change. Taro Tsujimoto got into the offensive zone quickly and intercepted a Greta Iverson pass. Tsujimoto found Frank Latta who got the puck back to the point to Adam Kaiser. Kaiser let the shot go with Latta screening in front of the net and Pel never saw the puck. The time of the goal was 12:15.

2nd Period

After Vancouver tied the game at two on a goal by Ludwig Koch Schroder from Jon Ross and Steven Stamkos Jr. at 19:15 on the powerplay, Halifax scored what appeared to be the backbreaker at 19:43. The puck was retrieved by Niklas Flower in the corner and sent around the net to Reflieux. Reflieux found Joey Ryan in front for the go ahead goal to make it Halifax 3 Vancouver 2 with just 17 seconds remaining in the second period.

3rd Period

It was a tough period for Raider Alexander Komarov who took two penalties that the Whalers capitalized on. First, Ludwig Koch Schroder scored the tying goal on the powerplay at 12:15 from Frank Latta and Dusty Cox.

Then, Schroder started the play up the ice from the Vancouver zone on the second powerplay. The Whalers passed the puck around until Ludwig Koch Schroder let the shot go just inside the blueline. Steven Stamkos Jr. deflected the shot in front of the net and by the glove of Pel for the game winning goal. Goal by Steven Stamkos Jr. - Halifax Raiders : 3 - Vancouver Whalers : 4.

Three Stars:
1. Ekaterina Rudnikova (Colorado)
2. Matthew Leetch (Colorado)
3. Taro Eichelele (Colorado)

Recap: The Halifax Raiders have arguably the best team in the SMJHL on paper this season, however the results have shown the opposite so far, as Halifax has lost all four games, and has earned only one out of eight possible points. Halifax currently sits last in the East. They did, however, show their true potential in this game. They didn't get the lucky bounces, but they did outperform Colorado in nearly every major category, which may be a sign of things to come.

The Game</div>

Detroit proved to be too much for Montreal despite a late comeback last night, as the two teams met for the second time this season at the Jet Blue Airways Arena.

Fans could have been forgiven for switching off their televisions before the game was over; perhaps even changing channels by the end of the second break. Very early goals by Kyle Kylrad and Prince Daniel James meant that the Falcons were leading by 2 just four minutes into the first period, and it would be another fifty minutes of play until that scoreline changed again.

The first goal was set up after a rare faceoff win by Josh Merica; the puck was passed around powerplay style between Kyle Kylrad, Prince Daniel James and Luke Atmey before Kylrad pulled the trigger and sent home a one timer that had fans in the seats behind the goal flinching and dropping their popcorn. Defenders Andrej Melnyk and Byron Knox were out of position to stop it; goaltender Stephen Harris did not react and likely lost track entirely.

The second goal by the Falcons was the incredibly aggressive work of defence pair Prince Daniel James and Terrance Nova; having watched Wesley Wells fail to properly catch a pass from Johnny Watson, Prince Daniel James stole the puck away and found himself in a 2 on 1 situation with goaltender Harris. The first shot by Terrance Nova missed, but Harris could not recover the rebound, and sank it home.

From then on, Stephen Harris and Detroit goaltender Sivy McSieve put on an incredible show; both saving as many as 20 shots before either of them let any more pucks in. Jari Sinikka and Zach Evans of Detroit allowed a 5 on 3 situation early in the third period, but even this wasn't enough to grant Montreal a scoring opportunity they were able to take advantage of. The streak did not end until Wesley Wells found redemption during a later 5 on 4 powerplay, putting a puck five hole on Sivy McSieve with a shot that was accidentally screened by Matthew Rossi, and deliberately screeend by Nathan Russett.

Detroit hit back less than a minute later with an exceptional solo effort by Joe Gray, deking Harris out of the goal crease entirely and scoring on a virtually empty net. A defensive lapse and bad pass by Alexis Metzler enabled Brennan Kennedy to put Montreal back to within a goal one last time, but by then, less than 5 minutes remained in the game, and the Militia never had another chance.

The Montreal Militia remain in Michigan, and will play Detroit here again tomorrow night, before returning to Montreal to face the Falcons for the fourth time in a row the night after, after which both teams finally get to play a regular season game that isn't against each other.

<div align="center">Takeaways</div>

Hot Streak- Detroit might not want to Jinx it, but Sivy McSieve played unusually well all preseason long. He didn't get a star for the game, but saving 30 out of 32 shots might have deserved it. If he stays this good, they have an incredible shot at the 4 Star Cup this season, regardless of how well the "Deplorables" turn out.

Bad Beat- Alexis Metzler had a game to forget; despite spending the 2nd most time of anyone on the ice, he found himself on the bench for all three of Detroit's goals, and was in part responsible for one of the goals against. None of his own four shots on goal made contact with anything other than the gloves of Stephen Harris.

First Star- Prince Daniel James was awarded the first start of the game for his goal and assist, and he was probably unlucky not to have been able to help Joe Gray with the third one, too. Expect to see him getting the first star pretty regularly all season.

Ominous Sign- Detroit has well and truly lost the faceoff dominance they had last season; Nucky Toohoots was a machine and they are plainly missing him having to put Wiljian Zjang in the 1st Center position. Josh Merica won just a quarter of his own faceoffs, and needs to get better, fast.

Silver Lining- The Militia well and truly outshot Detroit tonight, and probably would have won if Sivy McSieve wasn't on fire right now. Brennan Kennedy, Nathan Russett, and Wesley Wells all had 5 or more shots on goal this game, with Wells throwing 7 at the goaltender; fifteen more came from their teammates, and those teammates were unlucky to not add to the goals scored by Kennedy and Wells.

PRINCE GEORGE FIREBIRDS 2 - COLORADO MAMMOTH 0

Firebirds stay consistent in victory

DENVER -- It appears the lack of an additional referee was a hindrance for the game tonight between the Prince George Firebirds and Colorado Mammoth. While Ben Waters did well stopping 22-of-22 shots, the Firebirds won 2-0.

The story of the game, however, was the attempt by the SMJHL to save some money. Instead of assigning an additional referee to the game aside from the Hot Wheels Maker, they decided to double down on their star linesman. Robert Griffin III was assigned as a linesman for the game alongside Tim Tebow Post Baseball. Meanwhile, RGIII With No Knees, the same linesman, was marked to be a referee for the game.

This was obvious as a problem later in the game, after Sven Wolf scored his first of the season in the third period. The Mammoth fans were taking offense, and the Mammoth players seemed to absorb their vicious streak. Frontdoor McGraw was noted as having targeted and hit Wolf hard on the following shift well away from the puck. However, with his focus divided, RGIII With No Knees failed to make the connection and call the penalty.

This penalty could've broken the game, but instead the Mammoth broke themselves. After a 14-shot first period, they managed on 2 in the third period. While the Firebirds were consistent, the Mammoth were anything but. They appeared to decide to focus more on their frustrations than winning.

The previously noted Ben Waters was the first star of the game, while the two goal scorers Ernesto Castro and Sven Wolf were the other two stars. Castro scored on his only shot of the game, a powerplay goal barely over a minute into the game.

Early in the season, the two teams seemed vastly different. The frustration of the Mammoth changing their play style and leaving them inconsistent, while the Firebirds scored early and maintained their lead well.

COLORADO MAMMOTH 4 - KELOWNA KNIGHTS 1

O'Dooley continues dominance from S30

KELOWNA -- While the inconsistency continued for the Colorado Mammoth, the Kelowna Knights found consistency in failing to break through Ekaterina Rudnikova. Rudnikova allowed a single goal on 37 shots against to earn the 4-1 victory.

The game started jarringly for the Mammoth as Eibhear Sorenson scored within the first half-minute. Sorenson, the rookie associated with Jackson Rogers-Tanaka, took off right from the drop of the puck and pounded home a feed from Geronimo Otto to make it 1-0 Kelowna.

Sadly, it was not meant to continue. The storyline of the Mammoth and the Knights continued from S30, in which Maverick O'Dooley is continually a major destructor of Jason Aittokallio. O'Dooley and Matthew Leetch showed their connectivity as a playmaking duo in the first period, combining to feed to Kristians Rozentals just over 5 minutes into the game for the first goal.

They did the exact same, Leetch to O'Dooley for a stunning feed past the outstretched stick of the defender to Rozentals for another goal and a 2-1 lead just inside the final two minutes of the first period.

Continue to the third period, and it continues. Both O'Dooley, the destroyer of goalies, and Leetch combined to assist on Colton Hagan's powerplay goal halfway through the third period. Jacob Renninger scored a few minutes later to put the final nail in the coffin.

Rozentals had only two shots in the game, but both were goals that ended up the exact same way. These two early goals managed to make Rozentals the first star of the game. The second star was Rudnikova with her 36-of-37 saves, and Maverick O'Dooley was the third star with his three assists, tying himself with Matthew Leetch.

The Knights left unhappy, while the Mammoth used their inconsistency to their advantage this time. With only 4 shots in the first period, Colorado rose to the occasion in the end with 12 shots in the third period.

This game was Jason Aittokallio's first loss of the season, and is the first face-off between the two Manhattan Rage goaltenders drafted in the most recent draft. These two are expected to challenge each other frequently.

GAME 16 - Detroit Falcons @ Montreal Militia

Final score: 5-1 Falcons

The Detroit Falcons entered their fourth game after the Montreal Militia handed them their first lose of the season. Detroit came into the game with vengeance, going up 3-0 after the first, and eventually winning it 5-1 in a great mini series to start off the season. The Falcons currently lead the Militia 3-1 in the season series and are at the top of the standings with a quick start to the year.

Luke Atmey lights the lamp twice, Falcons fly past the Militia 5-1

Montreal, Quebec --- The Militia dropped another game at home against the Falcons in their 4 game mini season series after stealing a win in Detroit a couple days ago. The Falcons went up four goals and ended the game with a 5-1 victory.

Montreal ran into early goaltending trouble, with Stephen Harris giving up 3 even strength goals in the first period and another in the 3rd in only his 18th shot faced before getting pulled. Jari Ohvo played the rest of the period and gave up just 1 goal in 7 shots.

Terrance Nova, the rookie winger out of Texas scored his first JUNIOR CAREER goal in his 4th game- scoring on his first shot from above the face-off circle that squeezed through the traffic and under Stephen Harris's glove. Luke Atmey and Henrik Vikstrom scored within 1:13 seconds of each other, with Vikstrom netting one off Zach Evans' nice lob pass with 7 seconds left in the first period.

The Militia had a much better second period with Brennan Kennedy scoring two and a half minutes in, cutting the deficit to 2. They also played better defensively, only giving up 6 shots to help them stay in the game.

Jari Ohvo, the back-up goaltender for Montreal made his appearance a minute into the 3rd after Luke Atmey fired one passed Stephen Harris, who immediately got pulled after. Kyle Kylrad got the final goal of the night for the Falcons- off a sweet two line pass from Prince Daniel James halfway through the third.

THREE STARS

Third Star - Sivy McSieve (DET) The Falcons starter was almost perfect this game despite giving up a goal in the 2nd period. He made 22 solid saves out of 23 shots with a .957 save percentage.

Second Star - Luke Atmey (DET) 16:07 minutes - Luke had 3 hits, 2 goals on 2 shots--including the game winner, with a plus +3 rating.

First Star - Kyle Kylrad (DET)16:08 minutes - he had 1 goal on 4 shots and 2 assists, with a +3 rating.

Breakdown of team statistics

Shots- Falcons 25 Militia 23

The shots came evenly balanced even though scoring did not. Both teams played well defensively and the difference was the goaltending.

Special teams - Falcons 0 for 5 PP Militia 0 for 5 PP

Both teams came up strong on the penalty kill so the power play didn't really make a difference in the game. Montreal had some chances to close in on the Falcons' lead on the powerplay but could not get passed McSieve.

Hitting - Falcons 18 Militia 16

The Falcons are not known for their hitting prowess but played a respectably physical game with the Militia. Zach Evans of the Falcons was amongst the leaders in the game with 4 hits.

Blocked shots - Falcons 8 Militia 13

With the Falcons depth and offensive pressure, the Militia naturally had to block more shots. Although, both teams were pretty decent defensively with Montreal having a couple more defensive breakdowns.

Faceoffs - Falcons 28/80 Militia 52/80

Militia dominated in the faceoff all night, including winning some key draws- unfortunately, the pressure was not enough to help them convert on the scoreboard.

Short interview with Luke Atmey

Hey Luke you had 2 goals tonight including the game winner. What kind of approach mentally did you have coming into the game and can you take us through those two goals? Interview

I've already started to develop some really good synergy with my linemates. Coming into this game we wanted to come out strong to get the win and put some distance in the standings between us and Montreal. Both goals really were generated from good puck movement. I was able to find an open spot on the ice and Kylrad and Metzler were able to find me both times!

After a strong start in almost all categories, offense, defense and goaltending, how will the depth of this team play a role mid-way through the season? Interview

It really is huge. We know if someone is getting shut down one particular game, someone else can step up and contribute on the scoreboard. All 4 lines are solid offensively and defensively and that is how you win championships.

You look like you haven't skipped a beat... How does you translation into the juniors feel?  Interview

I feel great! I had a lot of time over the off-season to prepare for this and it's great to see my training play off. It is always tough when you are playing against players who have already experienced the SMJHL but Detroit has a young talented lineup and is putting everyone in a position to succeed.

HERE. WE. GO
The 2nd meeting of these teams in this young season, Vancouver were the victors the 1st time around by a score of 5-2. Prince George always the rival of their fellow provincial team look to rise up and beat the Whalers the 2nd time around. With some stand out goaltending once again from Ben Waters keeping them competitive and timely scoring they are still starting to develop a good start to the year. The bad blood between these two teams seems to be ramping up after last years 1st round playoff match up so this should be a good one.

Period 1
The first period saw a pretty even affair for both sides with the Firebirds coming out with a physical edge against the Whalers. Out hitting their opponents all while pulling even with them in shots it was a period that seemed to have a really even feel for it. If it wasn't for the goal by the Whalers one would leave the period feeling pretty good about the effort. The Firebirds seemed be in a bit of playoff mode this game already vs. their rivals. All while this is going on the Firebirds took their 1 and only penalty in this game as well.

Vancouver Whalers , Conklin Owen 1 (Victor Lindstrom, Taro Tsujimoto) at 14:03
After gaining some control in the Firebirds zone Owen cylced back for his pinching D after the dump in and found himself with A LOT of room coming in from the point with everyone collasping around waters and made no mistake sliding it home on the keeper to put the Whalers up 1-0

-Victims of the Whalers in the first: Wolf | Edwards | Riccardelli | NoRetornable

Shots - VAN: 8 || PGF: 7

Period 2
Moving onto the 2nd period Prince George still had to feel pretty good about their overall effort it's just that they were not rewarded with it. A early goal by the Whalers you think would have sunk the team perhaps after putting the effort in but as the period shows that wasn't completely the case. Vancouver having felt it was maybe pushed around in the first period turns on the physical aspect of their game after the 2 goals of the Firebirds and starts to lay the body on them often and hard. We leave this period all squared up at 2.
Vancouver Whalers , Taro Tsujimoto 2 (Brynjar Tusk, Ludwig Koch Schroder) at 3:22
A point shot that ping ponged a little before making it's way to and in the net. After being passed back and forth on the back end between the Whalers D men, Tsujimoto found himself johnny on the spot as it deflects of him and in. They don't ask how, just how many.

Prince George Firebirds , Hylytyr NoRetornable 1 (Barak Obrana, Teodors Cukurs) at 6:06
After a bit of a scramble play the Firebirds are finally rewarded for their work this game. Jamming a loose puck home NoRetornable puts Prince George back into the game, and back into striking distance.

Prince George Firebirds , Tapper Kottbulle 3 (Teodors Cukurs, Sven Wolf) at 9:38
Another play behind the net that ends up in the back of the net, Kottbulle finds himself the loose puck after being carried down by Cukurs and makes quick work of the wrap around before the Whalers goalie can re position himself properly and we are all tied up at 2.

Period 3

Moving into the 3rd all tied up you could tell both teams wanted the win and didn't want to give up any extra points in the standings. It was if both team were pushing each other as hard as possible to try and make mistakes. The period was fast paced with both teams trying to dictate their own idea of how the game was to be played. Vancouver with playing the body to generate turn overs and PGF firing everything at the net.

Prince George Firebirds , Barak Obrana 1 (Frederick Boone, Ernesto Castro) at 15:18 (PP)
Prince George strikes late on another tipped shot that finds it's way into the back corner of the net beating Wehner and eventually being the seal on the deal for this game. As we can see Vancouver tried to get in the way showing the commitment to pushing for the win, but sometimes lady luck just isn't on your side.

-Victims of the Whalers in the Third: Castro | Pham | Hiemstra |Dilder | Pollak x 2 |Caelum

3 Stars ***

1 - Taro Tsujimoto (VAN)
G: 1 | A: 1 | PTS: 2 | MP: 15:15 | +/-: 2
Althought he had limited minutes compared to some other players this game he made the most of his time on the ice contributing to his teams early lead and never being a victim of having any goals scored while on the ice this game. A nice complete game from Tsujimoto on both ends of the rink.
2 - Conklin Owen (VAN)
G: 1 | A: 0 | PTS: 0 | MP: 18:59 | +/-: 2
Much of the same from Owen as was said about Tsujimoto. Playing a complete game and being one of the cogs of the Vancouver offense this game he was a positive influence on the game, and rarely caught out of position or with his head down with all the checks being dished out.
3 - Barak Obrana (PGF)
G: 1 | A: 1 | PTS: 2 | MP: 20:28 | +/-: -1
One of the few Prince George players who recorded multiple points this game Obrana chewed up the minutes and made the most of the time out on the ice. A extra effort performance that helped drive the come back and eek out a win for the team.

Game Summary

The come back kids are at it again not letting any game slip away from them the Firebirds claw their way back into the game and get a regulation win against their inter provincial rivals. A strong game by Waters and the role players helped secure this win, and helps even up the season series between the two teams.

GRANLUND, KENNEDY LEAD MONTREAL PAST ST. LOUIS
by Rusty Klesla / ********.com Staff Writer

The Montreal Militia have not had a great start to the season. In fact, much like last season, the Montreal Militia have struggled early on to scrape together any kind of consistency. They have been weak in every area of the game and it has shown as they only won one of their first 4 games of the season (all against the Detroit Falcons) and even that was a shootout win. But Thursday night against the St. Louis Scarecrows, the Montreal Militia managed a narrow 3-2 win with center Filip Granlund’s late 3rd period goal.

“Its been a struggle”, Montreal Militia Captain Ryan Vas said post game. “Its not anything in particular really, we just haven’t had consistency and the bounces have not gone in our favor. Obviously you need to push hard but when you constantly draw iron or you miss by a few inches, it gets to you and you get frustrated. But I think this second win gave us some good confidence.”

Just 15 seconds into the game, Montreal Militia forward Johnny Watson took a game misconduct penalty after giving one of the linesmen “the finger” after they gave Nate Akeson a minor penalty for charging. Before the broadcast microphones were able to be silenced, they picked up Watson yelling “That’s a ****ing horse***t call, go f**k yourself, you ****ing casket case” before he gave one of the linesmen “the finger”, resulting in a game misconduct for unsportsmanlike conduct. This whole scene made Nate Akeson laugh so hard in the penalty box that he accidentally sprayed Gatorade through his nose while sitting in the penalty box. He later claimed that he was not laughing and that he accidentally “Spilled some of it when I was trying to balance the bottle on my finger”.

Excluding that, the Montreal Militia had a great start to the game when they scored the first goal of the game just 2 minutes and 4 seconds into the first period. Brennan Kennedy received a pass in the neutral zone from Ted McDonald after he intercepted a pass. Kennedy skated into the Scarecrows zone and defenseman Ryan Vas joined the rush. Kennedy passed the puck to Vas who faked the shot and made a pass to Marcos Maciel who fired the puck into the open net behind goaltender Kyle Wahlgren for a 1-0 lead.

But the lead only lasted 4 minutes when Kelly Rivet took advantage of a slow line change by the Montreal Militia and passed the puck to Nate Akeson who skated into the Montreal Militia zone with Zachary O’Ryan on his side on a 2 on 1 and O’Ryan made no mistake when as he only had to deflect Akeson’s pass past Montreal Militia goaltender Stephen Harris. And the game was tied going into the first intermission.

In the second period defense was the main event and the only goal in the second period was scored halfway through the period when the Russian Rebel Viktor Nerokov took a pass from Travis Jeziak and sniped home a laser missile slapshot past goaltender Kyle Wahlgren. “That was the best slapshot I have ever seen”, goaltender Kyle Wahlgren said. “Nerokov had something special going on in this game and I don’t think anyone is ever going to fire such a perfect slapshot ever again.”

In the third period, the St. Louis Scarecrows outshot the Montreal Militia 8-5 and they seemed to mostly dominate the game offensively. And this dominance lead to results as Devadander Abercombie took a pass from Casper Ek and one timed the puck from the slot, breaking his stick in the process. The changed shot fooled goaltender Stephen Harris and it slipped by him through the fivehole 7 minutes into the 3rd period. “I was expecting a fast ball and it became a slow ball instead”, Stephen Harris said post game. “I just lost sight of the puck for half a second and I did not manage to re-adjust for the shot and it went it. It happens.”

For a long time the game seemed to be headed into overtime but with less than 4 minutes left in the 3rd, Montreal Militia’s top offensive line came through when Brennan Kennedy found Filip Granlund alone on the left circle as he skated through behind the St. Louis net and sent the puck to Gtanlund on the left circle where Granlund settled the puck down and fired a wrister past goaltender Kyle Wahlgren. “I don’t know, I was just trying to get it on net”, Filip Granlund said post game. “I found myself open and I just yelled at Kennedy to pass it to me and I just tried to get the shot off as fast as possible. Randleman always tells us, its not about strength or shot speed when you shoot it: Just shoot the puck and surprise the goalie with a fast release”. When I asked Ryan Vas about the goal, he only said that “It doesn’t matter how; It just matters how many. And we got our 3rd with that shot and that was enough today. It was a nice shot though.”

When I asked Ryan Vas about what they have to do to win the next game as well, he replied “We gotta get to those dirty areas, simple as that. We had some good goals here and they were a bit fancy but we barely got any shots at all on the net. I think we can do better than that. If we shoot more and keep up this kind of quality on our shots, we’re bound to score more. This is a good place we’re in right now after this game.”

The Montreal Militia will face the Vancouver Whalers in their next game.
