Texas Renegades (via Edmonton Blizzard) - Zach Zyvleski 48. Los Angeles Panthers - pass 49. Texas Renegades (via New England Wolfpack) - pass 50. Buffalo Stampede (via Texas Renegades) - Danny Ridley **all passes after this pick **39 players taken in the draft – 11 have retired and 11 more are free agents which means about 40% of the players taken in this draft are still on a team and even some of those are not even active anymore. With that being said, this really turned out to be a one round draft with some fillers in the second round if you could find them. **out of the 8 players that have broken 1000 tpe – 2 defensemen, 2 goalies and 4 forwards **in the first round of the original draft – porter, hameleinen, bauer, browski and mcdonald all became first round busts and are either free agents or have retired. The Stampede put their faith in Hameleinen as one of their early picks in the franchise’s history. Anyone of a couple players that went after him would have worked out better in Silverwing, Gagner, Flood or Berger. Granted, anyone of these players may or may have not stayed, but at least a handful of seasons from them would have been better than nothing. **Portland got a home run with Wachter at the top of the second round and has since moved on and Edmonton found a gem in Reynolds with the 4th pick in the second round and he has helped lead the Panthers to a couple of back to back playoff berths. Charlyb’y and Aumeisters have also turned out to be decent second round picks as they have stayed semi-active since the draft. Fedorov, Luna and Pecker looked to have some promise, but have not stayed active for the most part. Buffalo took a flier on Mikita and got burned which means they did not get anything out of this draft but they currently have Wachter on their roster, so that is a win in of itself. **the 3rd and 4th rounds did not produce anything in terms of sleepers and while Texas took a flier on Zyvleski, he ended up rapping himself out of the league. REDRAFT BASED ON TPE ONLY (TPE TAKEN FROM PLAYER PAGES AS OF 3-23-17): Round 1 1. Portland Admirals – Lord Vader -- 1462 2. Manhattan Rage – Shane Gagne -- 1341 3. Winnipeg Jets (via Toronto North Stars via Portland Admirals) – Brian Wade -- 268 30. Winnipeg Jets (via Los Angeles Panthers, via Manhattan Rage) – Kylo Ren -- 255 31. Winnipeg Jets – Alfred Holliday -- 196 41. Hamilton Steelhawks (via Seattle Riot) – Danny Ridley -- 195 42. Hamilton Steelhawks – pass **Wachter and Reynolds are the big winners as they move up from the early second round into the top 6 of the draft. Gagne moves up 7 spots from #9 to #2. The goalies flip flop as Berger would go first in this draft and then Flood. Kowalski and Reay fall from the top of the first round to the bottom of the first while Pecker, Charlyb’y and Aumeisters move up from the second round into the bottom of the first. Some of those busts we talked about before moved from the first round into the bottom half of the second round never to be heard from again. LOOKING BACK AT A REDRAFT OF THE FIRST ROUND ONLY: Round 1 1. Portland Admirals – Chris Crutchfield -- 1337 2. Manhattan Rage – Lord Vader – 1462 3. Minnesota Chiefs – Shane Gagne -- 1341 4. Los Angeles Panthers (via Buffalo Stampede) – Raven Silverwing -- 1290 5. Minnesota Chiefs (via Edmonton Blizzard) – Jaxson Reynolds – 1187 6. Buffalo Stampede (via Los Angeles Panthers) – Matt Lewis-Flood – 1033 7. New England Wolfpack – Maximillian Wachter -- 1284 8. Manhattan Rage (via Texas Renegades) – Lukas Berger -- 1064 9. Calgary Dragons – Dane Rowe -- 792 10. West Kendall Platoon - Krysztof Kowalski – 752 11. Toronto North Stars – Alexander Charlyb'y -- 775 12. Winnipeg Jets - Reinis Aumeisters – 689 13. Seattle Riot - Dickie Pecker – 695 14. New England Wolfpack (via Hamilton Steelhawks) – William Fedorov -- 576 **the top 3 players move around a little bit as unquestionably, crutchfield becomes the new #1 overall pick in the draft and helps Portland start to build from the defensive side of the puck. Would he stay for the complete build of the franchise and be that cornerstone piece or get moved if things didn’t work out in Portland. Vader goes to the rage and potentially sets up a future pairing with Wolker who would eventually take over the franchise. Of even more importance, they basically get their future goalie in net as well with Berger instead of Bauer. **with the top 2 defensemen gone, the chiefs opt for a couple of forwards in gagne and Reynolds who is a recreate. Silverwing goes 4th to Los Angeles after tearing up the SMJHL for a while. He would be a nice fit along side of the checkers and grinders they have there now – kinda similar to the wing spot that Reynolds has held down for a couple of seasons now. **if I am buffalo at this point, I would start to build from the net out (index’s aren’t working back then so its hard to see who they have in goal at that point) and go with Lewis-Flood who was also dominating the SMJHL and was a pretty active guy. Even if you have to let him sit in the SMJHL for a few seasons, it at least allows buffalo to draft around him in the future and get some pieces in place for a run at the playoffs sooner than season 33. **Wachter ends up in new England to give them another checking body to go along with the likes of Russell. Not much else happens at the bottom of the first round other than Fedorov sneaks in as the last pick and would basically be a depth pick at this point for the Wolfpack as his activity has been mainly hit or miss and 3 centers go from #9-#11 in the draft. |
