Colorado Mammoths vs. Halifax Raiders

[Image: BZkTxiu.png]

Pregame Look
The opening night for the SMJHL S35 Season showcases two teams looking to make a mark and establish themselves in the league as legitimate franchises. Both teams showcase not only some great up and coming prospects, but also some great drafted talent. They are both stable in net with S35 returning goalies Jordin Four Four Jr for Halifax and Aleksandr Alekandrov for the Colorado Mammoths. The Raiders are depending on a lot of input from their newly drafted players - Yuri Boyka Jr is starting the season as their number one center, and Lukas Muller, selected in the first round of the S35 SMJHL Draft will serve as the number one defense pairing, as well as the PP and PK pairing.. That is a lot to ask for the youngsters. While Colorado is putting emphasis on veteran returnees the Finn-duo of Finn Larsen up front, and Finn Kruger (3rd OV SHL S35 Draft) on the back end.

First Period

The game started off on a fast paced note as Halifax had pressure on their opponent right away. In 5:20 of the first period Lyszczarczyk won a faceoff, only for Montek Ramrap to take the puck away. He moved it forward to Bar Downski who controlled it in the Mammoth’s zone. He made an incredible slap-pass across the ice to Yuri Boyka Jr. who tipped it in for the first goal of the game. Halifax nearly made it 2-0 around the 8:00 min mark, as they got a power play off a Chase Byron hooking penalty. The Mammoths would tie the game after the halfway point of the first as Alex Zajac showed serious persistence. He deflected the puck just wide of the net, but gained a great bounce, and found a wide-open net to pot the first goal of the season for the Colorado Mammoths.

1. Halifax Raiders , Yuri Boyka Jr. 1 (Bar Downski, Montek Ramrap) at 5:30
2. Colorado Mammoths , Alexander Zajac 1 (Asvard Lyszczarczyk, Suri Uedo) at 11:04

Second Period

The second period saw the game turn it up a notch. The jitters seemed to have left, and the game got very exciting. There were multiple highlight reel hits, which is topped by Lyszczarczyk getting crushed by rookie Dwayne Wyder. The penalty total tripled from the first period, and the teams really started to show emotion. While there were equal chances this period, the Mammoths were able to score two quick goals near the end of the period to take a commanding two goal lead. The second Mammoth goal saw Vincent Garlund crush Yuri Boyka Jr. twice to give up the puck to Kruger who then sent a perfect pass onto an open Zbnek stick. The third goal only thirteen seconds later saw Uedo clear in the front of the net and deke’d FourFour Jr. out of his mind.

3. Colorado Mammoths , Vratislav Zbyněk 1 (Finn Krüger) at 18:43
4. Colorado Mammoths , Suri Uedo 1 (Vincent Garland, Daedric Heikennin) at 18:59

Third Period

The third period got rather chippy. Both teams took penalties, and there were only 4 decent scoring chances, and they were all by Halifax - Aleksandrov looked sharp on all the chances, shutting the door. The Raiders weren’t able to make a late-game push, as the Mammoths would hold off to secure the first win of the S35 SMJHL Season.

Mook's Defensive Pick

Finn Kruger

Notching 22 minutes of icetime, with 4.5 of those on the PK, there is no other choice for the defensive player of the game. Even offering up an assist on one of the Mammoths goals, he put up 3 big hits and sacrificed his body on 3 shots. The cornerstone of the Mammoths team, they couldnt have asked for a better game from the superstar, easily earning the defensive player of the game

Punching Bag Of The Game
Asvard Lyszczarczyk

With what this reporter is sure is a made up name, Asvard Lyszczarczyk is the very first recipient of the Punching Bag of the Game award. Lit up an astounding 6 times, Asvard is sure to be black and blue tomorrow morning. Only losing the puck twice, Asvard showed off his strength in being able to fend off several Raiders forwards.

<b><div align="center">Downski's Difference Makers
</b></div>

<div align="center"> Mammoths #1 - Suri Uedo Mammoths </div>
Suri Uedo was a difference maker tonight pottin a goal and snaggin an apple for the Mammoth offense tonight. Just like his teammate Vincent Garland, Suri played excelent on the PK tonight, logging a whopping 4:32 minutes of ice time on the penalty kill which ended the night perfect without allowing a power play goal.

<div align="center"> Mammoths #2 - Aleksandr Aleksandrov Mammoths </div>
Aleksandr was in mid season form tonight for the season opener between the Mammoths and the Raiders. Aleks had 26 Saves on 27 shots and was able to hold back the relentless attack of the Raiders young squad. The Mammoths were out shot 27-20 in this contest and it easily could have gone the other way. HOLLDDTHEDOOORRR (too soon) ALEKS.

<div align="center"> Mammoths #3 - Vincent Garland Mammoths </div>
Vincent played some tough minutes tonight on the PK for a total of 4 minutes as the Mammoths were down a man 5 times tonight. He also logged a team high 5 hits and an snagged assist on the insurance goal that gave his team a 2 goal lead in the 2nd period. Chalk it up as a good performance Vincent!

TSN Turning Point

Late in the 2nd, Yuri Boyka Jr skates around with the puck and is hit unexpectedly by Vincent Garland who then takes it the other way and gains control of the Raiders zone. After a deep shift of forechecking, Vratislav Zbynek manages to out one in. That really hurt the young Raiders squad and they could not recover as they had thought the period was over but let in 2 goals in under 30 seconds.

Physical Player of the Game

Vincent Garland of the Colorado Mammoths collected 5 hits in the Mammoths' victory over the Raiders. While only 2 of his hits lead to turnovers, one of those hits gave the Mammoths the offensive zone, and eventually lead to their second goal. This sort of physical play is what makes a player like Garland an invaluable asset as someone who can generate offense from hard work and physical play.

<div align="center">Goalies Head to Head</div>
<div align="center">Aleksandr Aleksandrov (COL) : 26 saves, 27 shots, 1 goal allowed - 0.963
Jordin FourFour Jr. (HAL) : 17 saves, 20 shots, 3 goals allowed - 0.850</div>

The goalies stats were a clear indicator of the game. Aleksandrov blocked 26 of the 27 shots from the Raiders and only got beaten by a deflection from Yuri Boyka Jr who gave him no chance. Meanwhile, on his side of the ice, FourFour Jr. got a bad game, blocking only 17 of the 20 shots made by the Mammoths. While he had no chance of blocking the first goal from Alexander Zajac, he seemed weak in the end second period, letting two goals in less than a minute. He recovered in the third but Aleksandrov was too good for the Raiders and the Mammoths won 3-1.

Welcome readers to another exciting edition of Gatorade Fuel's Workhorse of the Game, analyzing the numbers and seeing who's showing up big for their team beyond just goals and assists. This game's workhorse is without question Asvard Lyszczarczyk, who was instrumental in maintaining the Mammoths' big lead through the 3rd period. By the end of the game, the Mammoths got careless and a bit reckless, and more often than not Colorado players continued to cross the line. 5 powerplay opportunities were handed to the Raiders, including 3 in the third period, but Andrezjeck finishing with 5:14 of penalty kill time, was the biggest key to the Mammoths victory. Congratulations Andrezjeck, see you all next game!

Boeing Interceptor of the Game
</center>

Tonight's Boeing Interceptor of the Game is Chase Byron! Boeing's Interceptor of the Game award goes to the defenseman who demonstrated the best ability to break up the most passes in a game. In 19:27 played, Byron managed to break up a whopping 18 passes despite playing on the second pairing. Byron's 3:36 of PK time was a big contributor to the Mammoths' perfect 5/5 Penalty Kill, instrumental in the 3-1 victory. All eyes are on the Mammoths' defensive core as their talented crop of youngsters reached the scoreboard and had an impact on both ends of the ice.

Wilson Rebounder of the Game
</center>
Wilson's Rebounder of the Game goes to the goalie who demonstrated the best rebound control in the game, Jordin FourFour Jr. While Aleksandr Aleksandrov may have stolen the show with an impressive 0.963 save percentage, FourFour had an impressive 2 rebounds on 17 saves, for a stingy 11.7% rebound percentage (compared to almost 20% for Aleksandrov). The 0.850 save percentage led to a loss for the Raiders, but the pucks he did manage to get in front of generally offered no second opportunities. The Raiders may have some kinks to work out this season, but Jordin FourFour Jr. is going to give the team as many opportunities to win as he can.

<center>[Image: Adobe-logo.png]
Adobe Draw of the Game
</center>

Teddy Kesler has been awarded Adobe's Draw of the Game based on his clutch faceoff at 18:44 of the second period to set up the Mammoths' 3rd goal. Kesler won the draw against Oliviz Klozoff in the neutral zone, and managed to distribute the puck around as the Mammoths gained the offensive zone. The goal came after all 5 Mammoths on the ice touched the puck in a single shift, quarterbacked on a set play by Kesler. Kesler was only 11/26 on draws in 20 minutes of playtime, but came up with the deflating goal to put Colorado up by 2 late in the second period, icing out the Raiders for the third period.

<center>GLASS' WINDOWPANE</center>

Most Invisible Player Of The Game

Today's Glass Windowpane of the game goes to Mikhail Kapralov! Kapralov registered nearly 14 minutes of ice time on the third line, playing on no special teams. During those 14 minutes, Kapralov recorded no goals, no assists, a +/- of 0, a single shot, no hits and no shots blocked. Kapralov took no faceoffs, and neither committed a giveaway or a takeaway. He attempted 3 more shots, none of which reached the net. He additionally iced the puck once and took a single hit. For his incredible effort to be absent from the scoresheet, Kapralov has been awarded this gorgeous windowpane:

The Golden Crossbar of The Game is awarded to the player with the most shots without scoring a goal. Any ties disqualify all players involved. The winners/poor souls are a diverse bunch, ranging from SMJHL greats to busts, but they all have one thing in common: they are notorious for not being able to buy a goal.

Bar Downski is the first recipient of the season as he managed to put six shots on net to no avail. It's alright tho, he managed to sort of make up for it as he created a goal while he was at it too, but it would be on the game's only goal despite out-shooting Colorado by seven and despite having nearly five minutes on the power-play just for Downski alone. Downski would try again with two seconds left to tip a shot into the net, but it would be blocked.

Better luck next time and congratulations/sorry <a href='index.php?showuser=2653' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>WinGretzky</a>
