Calgary's Jester Award announced

The demise of the Calgary Dragons has been greatly exaggerated. Coming off a season where they missed the playoffs for the first time since S23 and where most pundits salutted their decade of mastery while wishing them well in their rebuild.. the franchise stormed back in 35 to win 36 of 50 games and secure the President's Trophy on their way to their 2nd best record in team history!

With great skill comes great pride with this roster.. as they work as hard as any group in the league to veer off regression and maintain the level of play which they are accustomed too.. to dictate how and when they pass the torch over to the next generation of Dragons.

Today, Calgary salutes 2 players who led the team back toward prominence in 35 with the teams Jester Award.. Calgarys most valuable player trophy.. an accolade given too Randy Randelman! (<a href='index.php?showuser=1643' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Ballerstorm</a>) Rando tied his own personal record for most points by a Dragons player with 64! while laying the wood 244 times (ranked 4th in the league) and 10 first star performances. A truly amazing season for the Dragons captain who was also nominated for 2 League MVP trophies and was the winner of the Jeff Dar award for Best 2-Way Forward. This will be Randelmans 3rd Jester award, the other 2 coming in seasons 28 and 33.

and an honourable mention goes to Calgary back stop Hunter Wong! <a href='index.php?showuser=171' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Wongy</a>'s numbers in 35 were off the charts.. tops in the league in wins (30) and 2nd in the SHL in save percentage (.915) Goals against (2.26) and shutouts (4) .. A truly remarkable season capped off with goalie of the year nomination. Hunter Wong continues to defy his age, add to his hall of fame resume and prove that he is one of the best goalies of all-time.

Dragons name Joe Kurczewski Alternate Captain

Today, the Calgary Dragons take a step towards the future as they name Joe Kurczewski as an alternate captain for the S36 season! Moving into his 6th year Kurczewski stands as a portal between the franchises current roster and their next wave of talent as Joe joins fellow alternate Shane Gagner (<a href='index.php?showuser=1622' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-56'>Copenhagen</a>) and team captain Randy Randleman as the franchises lettermen.

Drafted 22nd overall by St. Louis in S30 Joe quickly made a name for himself scoring 26 points in his rookie season while gaining a reputation as a robust earner of TPE. Calgary selected the offensive forward 12th overall and after a 40 point campaign in 31 Kurcz quickly became the franchises most bankable young talent.

Near the top of his draft class in TPE by the end of season 32, Calgary made the move and promoted their rising star to the team's playoff roster where he made his SHL debut in post season play! Kurczewski began seasons 33 and 34 on the 3rd line of a highly skilled roster and in season 35 Joe made the jump to line 2 where he projects to begin again in the upcoming season.

With a 1381 TPE player build and a prodigious talent base surrounding him, Kurczewski projects as one of the great young talents in the league as he moves into the prime of his career, helping to lead this franchise.

it's genuinely amazing how good he's been and nobody really talks about him.. ever

ask people who the best goalies of the past 10 seasons are and you'll hear Tanner, Aittokallio, Andersson, Haas, Broadway, Laukkanen... won't hear anyone say Wong even though he deserves to be in the conversation lol

Yep Wongy's quietly been one of the most successful goalies in SHL history. He's one of only three goalies to win 3 or more Cups, Tanner, Aitto, Wong. He's racked up 338 Reg.Season Wins, probably near the top in all-time in playoff wins too. He doesn't get much fanfare and doesn't seek it out, but he's been the backbone of our team for over a decade and deserves a lot of credit for our success.
