WHALERS REBOUND ON THE ROAD

The Whalers pulled off a close overtime victory tonight against the Prince George Firebirds, in Prince George. The final was 2-1 in the second game of a 6 game stretch where these two teams will face off against each other over 10 nights. Prince George took the first game 6 to 4 in Vancouver two nights ago after scoring 3 goals in the first 4 minutes and 6 seconds as well as 5 total in the first period of that thriller.

Tonight was a much different story as the coaches tightened up defensively. After giving up 6 goals and 34 shots on net two nights ago, the Whalers were much better tonight only giving up the 1 goal on 15 shots against.

Prince George opened up the scoring at 16:58 of the first period on an offensive zone face-off won by Jill Jellybeanov against the Whalers Shawn Gretzky. The puck went to winger Jay Beagle Jr. who worked it back to Jellybeanov who took a hard shot that whizzed wide past the net but rebounded off the boards right to defenceman Tomáš Toothsome who shot a laser past Whalers net-minder Roberts Kļaviņš. For Toothsome this was the first goal on the season for him and he is relied on heavily by the Firebirds so hopefully he will keep coming up big for them this season.

Lizzy Jukka got her third goal of the season at 2:45 of the second from Sven Niederreiter and Hoid Wit. After some good offensive pressure including a shot off the post by Johnson Jack 30 seconds earlier, Jukka snapped it quickly past Artom Zhumbayev who did look solid all night stopping 25 of 27.

In the third period Vancouver put on some pressure but goalie Zhumbayev was up to the task stopping all 10 shots against and helping get the game to overtime.

The Whalers coaching staff saw some extra jump in Lizzy Jukka's step tonight and had her take a big defensive zone faceoff against Firebirds top center Paddy Kane-Rielly 30 seconds in to OT. Lizzy won the faceoff and after some great work by Sven Brokstad and Magar to get the puck out of the zone and back to Jukka she was able to fire it post and in to win the game just 45 seconds into the extra frame.

Third Star:

With the lone goal for the Firebirds defenseman Tomáš Toothsome!

Tomáš Toothsome Game Stats:
1 Goal - 20:32 TOI - 2 Shots

Second Star:

With 1 assist and 21:19 played our second star is another defenseman but this time for the Whalers. Sven Brokstad!

Sven Brokstad Game Stats:
1 Assist - 21:19 TOI - 2 Shots

First Star:

An easy choice with both goals for the Whalers, her third and fourth on the season: Center LIZZY JUKKA!

Lizzy Jukka Game Stats:
2 Goals - 21:01 TOI - 5 Shots - 13/19 (68%) Faceoff Dot

It will be interesting to follow the final four games in this series to see who comes out on top. If I was a betting man I would bet heavily on the Firebirds.

Dick Skillstedt Whalers

Although not getting on the scoresheet, Skillstedt used his size and strength to create space for other players on his team to get the win. Skillstedt finished with 2 shots on goal with 2 hits. The two shots were high quality chances but couldn't get one past the Firebirds starter Zhumbayev. The two hits were bonecrushing and one hit created enough space for his linemate to score, giving him a plus on his plus/minus. With almost 18 minutes of ice time, the Whalers are looking for Skillstedt to make an impact quickly.

Firebirds Artom Zhumbayev Firebirds </div>

<div align="center">The goaltender is often forgotten in these low scoring games as the % of points a player can get is slim and therefore is worth more.
However Zhumbayev had a great .926%, stopping 25 of the 27 shots against him, some of them very acrobatical against this hungry Whalers team who tried anything to get the puck between the young Firebirds goalie.
He did not win the goalie battle for the win, with the other goalie only allowing 1 in 15, but Zhumbayev got put under more pressure, and this game could've gone any way as it went to OT.</div>

<div align="center">The Puck Bunnies Blog Presents:

<span style='font-size:14pt;line-height:100%'>After Hours with Gord and Jim!
</span></div>

Jim: Welcome and thanks for tuning in everyone to tnight's show with me and my partner Gord!
Gord: Glad, once again to be here Jim.

J: Let's get started with a great game that saw the former champs take on Prince Gerogre, in what would turn out to be a nail biter.
G: 27 to 15 were the shots in favour for Vancouver, who would also squeak out the win, thanks to Lizzy Jukka with both goals tonight!
J: It was a very close game throughout with one goal in the first, one in the second and then in overtime.
G: Vancouver turned it up in the 3rd putting just about everything on net trying to get something by Zhumbayev, but he stood his ground.
J: Zhumbayev stood on his head most of the game while trying to keep the Firebirds in this one, but couldn't hold on in the end as 45 seconds into the overtime frame, Lizzy broke the tie and Vancouver walks out with a win.
G: A win that doesn't really matter as they are channeling their inner Montreal Militia this year and going for that lottery pick Jim.
J: Well it is the SMJHL Gord, teams have their good years and bad, or you stay even and not very good but not very bad, see Firebirds, but if you would like to hear more team bashing, head over to the newly sponsored Thunderdome! Thanks for tuning in!

<div align="center">Crutchfield's OT Play of the Game:

Lizzy Jukka was the Vancouver Whalers saviour of the game tonight, as she scored 45 seconds into the overtime period to secure the win for her team. Artom Zhumbayev was more than likely overworked by facing 26 shots to this point to the evening. Indesvara Magar hit Lizzy with a pass as she streaked through the neutral zone and into the Prince George zone. She blew by Prince George defencemen and was one on one with Zhumbayev.

She went forehand and the Firebirds goaltender bought it! He slides to cover the net before Jukka pulls it to her backhand and absolutely roofs it on Artom Zhumayev, ending the Firebirds hopes of winning this game only 45 seconds into the Overtime Period.

Godspeed, Lizzy Jukka.
