GAME 69

Mammoth Second Period Too Much For Firebirds To Overcome

The Firebirds came to Colorado with 2 points on their mind as we pass the half way point in the season and action begins to ramp up.

These two teams sit near the top of the SMJHL standings but know that the season is still early so they can't let off the gas. These two teams just faced off against each other in Prince George last game where the Firebirds destroyed the Mammoths 5-1 and held them to only 14 shots on net.

Colorado was out to prove that it was just a bad game by them and they aren't really that bad. The Mammoths came out flying in the first period and outshot the Firebirds 11-2 but unfortunately they couldn't find the back of the net. Firebirds goalie Artom Zhumbayev was very good in the period and kept his team in it early.

Unfortunately the Mammoths came out just as hungry and fast in the second period. Colorado scored 3 goals in the period including the first of his career for rookie defenseman Your Overlord which came on the Power play. Colton Hagan (5) and and Dean Youngblood (4) also scored for Colorado in the frame.
The Firebirds finished the period with 8 total shots including the 2 from the first. It was looking like they were ready to pack it up and go home.

Something must of been said to wake up the Firebirds in the locker room between periods because they came out with tons of jump in the third period. It started just 40 seconds into the period when rookie sensation Paddy Kane-Rielly scored assisted by Dionýz Vyskoč (13) Zemgus Nylander (10). The goal lit the birds on fire and just three minutes later another rookie defenseman had his first goal of his career but this time it was Maurice Picard of the Firebirds. The goal came off some great work of his teammates Jakub Dvorak and Brendan Kally but Picard put the puck crossbar, post and in for a picture perfect snipe.

Unfortunately it wasn't enough and the Mammoth managed to shut down the doors defensively for the rest of the game and hold on to a nice 3-2 win.

At 3:51 minute in the 3th period, Maurice Picard made a goal for Prince George Firebirds and made the score 3 : 2. At that moment, the fans really believed they could see an uprising of the birds against their captor, this team of giant Mammoths. The excitation was palpable in the air. It turned the game from a losing wreck to a chance to shine for the birds. But as it was once said, fly to close to the sun and you'll burn. Guess the firebirds bursted into flames because they weren't able to get that last mile.

<div align="center">Crutchfield's Individual Effort Player of the Game
Mammoths Colton Hagan, RW Mammoths

Despite only scoring one goal in this game, Hagan was all over the ice as he continually set up opportunities for his teammates. With 7 shots on goal in this game, it was clear that Hagan wanted more goals, and he wanted more offence from his team. With every goal from the Mammoths coming in the second period, and Hagan breaking the ice by opening the scoring two minutes into the second period, it was clear to me that he was an offensive catalyst for his team, and thus deserving of this award.
