S37 Championship Week

TASK ONE: Pick either of the teams currently in the finals. Which game of theirs in the playoffs was the most important/crucial in them getting to this point this season? Must be at least 150 words and include either two statistics or some (reasonable) justification of narrative justifying your choice.

While down 2-1 in the series to Minnesota, Toronto needed a momentum swinger to even have a possibility of winning the series. In the offseason, Minnesota worked and built to becoming one of the favourites going into the season, building a team like Texas the previous season who won a Cup on defense. Garbanzo and Crutchfield stood in their way. However, in game 4 Toronto dominated onwards to a 4-1 win against Minnesota. That massive win tipped the series in their favour, and they went on to win the next two after to take the series 4-2 after being down 2-1 going into this game. Getting passed West Kendall was tough, but TOronto fought tooth and nail to beat out Minnesota. THat’s why I think this game was so important in getting Toronto into the finals, and one of the biggest games of the postseason was not a game seven, but a game 4.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S37 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

In every playoffs ever the forwards get all the spotlight. Last season Winston Windsor was the undeniable best player of the playoffs, and had one of the most dominant playoffs in recent memory. He did not win the Razov because he is a defender and he wasn’t the top scorer. Max Weber may be the player of the playoffs and no one talks about him. His 15 assists, 33% of which have been on the powerplay, have been the reason Winnipeg has absolutely dominated its way towards the Challenge Cup. He has been the best puck moving defender these playoffs, and his 33 shots blocked have shown how good his two way game is. WIthout his transition game, I don’t think we see Fleming hit 30 points in 18 games without Weber on his line (and 800 minutes a game). Max Weber has been the best player these playoffs, and Winnipeg must be happy to have traded for him.

TASK FOUR: Who is the favorite and who is the underdog of this series? Are they almost even, or is there a big skill difference between the two teams? Must be at least 150 words and include at least three statistics in support.

Winnipeg is easily the favourite. While Toronto has recently won the Cup, Winnipeg has shown these playoffs the dominance of a top 6 rotation, which has caused quite a stir amongst the league. Winnipeg steamrolled the former Challenge Cup winners Texas in 4 games, handedly outscoring them 23-9 with Fleming and Evans. They then took out a hot Seattle team quickly, and are definitely the favourites to win the Cup. (Now they have Fleming with 30 points and Evans with 25) Don’t count out Toronto, however. Their experience and truculence has been evident these playoffs against Minnesota and West Kendall, two formidable opponents, beating West Kendall in 5 games only, despite West Kendall dominating the East most of the year. In this series many expect Winnipeg to win due to their playoffs and 6 player rotation. However, the experience of Toronto could prove to be too much. Toronto has done this before, for the first time in their histories too, which means they will be hungry for a second in short order, so we expect them to come out fighting.

TASK SIX: Create three questions, one for each of three different players in the Challenge Cup and tag them. Playing in the Challenge Cup? Feel free to answer questions for your task or ask three of your own.

The most important game for the Winnipeg jets probably has been the game one of the conference final. After an "easy" win against the Texas Renegades (after all, they were the reigning champions) a 4-0 sweep. It often happened that teams with a clear win in round one got beaten in game one of the next series. So they had to proof everyone that this theory is wrong and they did it. It wasn't a easy one, because they had to face the Seattle Riot. The team that just had a phenomenal regular season with 35 wins out of 50 games. It was a great game with a lot of chances on both ends, but the difference maker for Winnipeg has been their veterans. Vlad McZehrl with one goal, Luke Flemming with a goal and an assist and a am on a mission their retiring goalie Lukas Berger with 35 saves from 36 shots.

It's hard to pick an unsung hero from the champion winning team and even harder if they only played with 2 lines. So we will have look at the losing opponent. Who was the tragic hero of the Toronto North Stars? If you take a look through the roster it was pretty clear how it could be. The choice comes down to a long time Toronto North Star member. 4 hits per game for a total of 72 hits in 18 games. 27 shots blocked, one goal and 9 assists for total 10 points. Finished with +2 in the +/- statistic, played nearly 28 minutes a game. Most of you probably will know who we are talking about. It's Toronto's world class lady Cynthia Taylor. She really would have had deserved a better ending of her great, great career. At least it was a big farewell season for a great athlete of our beloved sport.

If you look at the match up for the final it was pretty clear who is the favorite and who is the underdog. The Winnipeg Jets are the favorite against the Toronto North Stars. But going into the finals as an underdog isn't a bad thing, no one believes you have a real change and so you could surprise everyone. (We already know they have surprise everyone but in the end it wasn't enough.) If you look through the roster you can clearly see that the offensive players from Winnipeg are a little bit stronger than the North Stars offense. The significant difference comes when you look down to the other end of the game, where the defensive player play their game. The Winnipeg Jets defense is much deeper and better then the North Stars one. And with Lukas Berger in the net, their goaltending is also better. If you look at the regular season statistics you will see that they have played two games against, both won their away games. Their final score was 9-8 for the North Stars.

1 For the Winnipeg jets, game 7 of the western conference finals was their most important game of the playoffs up until this point where they pulled off a narrow 5-3 win on the road against the president trophy winners in the seattle riot to send them to the challenge cup finals to face the Toronto North Stars. First off the game that sends you off the to challenge cup finals can always be considered the most important game of the playoffs as its what lets you have a shot for the challenge cup. More importantnly however winning a grueling series against seattle that couldve gone either way was a huge boost in confidence for Winnipeg as well as the fact that regardless whoever won out of seattle or winnipeg wouldve likely been considered the clear favourites in the finals due to their dominance in the regular season and amount of talent on their teams.

2. My unsung hero for the playoffs this far is Cynthia Taylor for the Toronto North Stars. In her last season in the SHL Cynthia is trying to repeat her amazing accomplishment of bringing Toronto its 1st ever cup. Off the ice Taylor brings tons of leadership to Toronto through their playoff run as they try to win the cup. But on the ice although she hasnt put up massive numbers shes done all the little things very well that every team needs in order to get to this point and go all the way. Taylor leads the team with a massive 72 hits over 20 more than the 2nd highest Toronto, and is 2nd on the team in shots blocked. She also leads the team in PIMS as she is a physical menace on the ice sacrificing her body as he helps her team get the wins needed to win the cup.

3. Although during the regular season Toronto and Winnipeg were very close going 1-1 with the goals 9-8 in favour of Toronto, this is a very small sample size and Winnipeg is defintley the favourite going into the finals. Many did not expect to make it this far as they have made quite an impressive run for a team in a weird place coming off a recent cup win and now having some old vets at the end of their career along with some upcoming rookies. Winnipeg meanwhile is coming off a dominant regular season and although much has been made about their lack of depth. They have 2 amazing scary lines that are constant threats with their last off season signing of Vlad Mczerhl. Neither teams defense is amazing and the goaltending is pretty equal, but the amount of offensive firepower Winnipeg has upfront makes them a real favorite to win the cup.

TASK ONE: The Winnipeg Jets were at a tipping point in the Western Conference Finals. It was Game 7, and they were on the road against the regular season Western Conference Champion, the Seattle Riot. Some say that it is games like these where heroes are born, and for the Jets, that held true. Corey Bearss, the scrappy, starting left winger, rose to the challenge, as he netted 3 goals for a hat trick in the deciding game that the Jets would eventually win. Two of the goals came within a span of 70 seconds, the third goal serving as the game winner. It wasn't just Bearss' offensive production that made him such an invaluable asset during the game. He also notched 5 hits in a very physical showing, driving opponents off of the puck. He was also able to eat minutes, playing over 28 minutes during the game, an amazing feat for a forward in the league

TASK TWO: Big Manious is the unsung hero of the playoffs for the Winnipeg Jets. While his offensive production has allowed him to fly under the radar (3 goals, 6 assists for 9 points), he has come in clutch with 1 game winning goal over the playoffs, as well as a full 60 minutes on the power play. He has managed to play around 25 minutes per game throughout the playoffs, many of these minutes in crucial defensive situations. He played 29 minutes on the penalty kill, contributing to the Jets' success while down a man. He racked up a nice 54 hits, good for second on the team, and has been a real intimidating physical force on the ice. Manious has also been willing to sacrifice the body throughout the playoffs, as he has recorded 30 blocks over the course of the playoffs. His willingness to sacrifice the body has managed to keep several high risk scoring chances away from his netminder. Manious's willingness to work hard in areas that don't garner a lot of appreciation and attention makes him Winnipeg's unsung hero

TASK FOUR: The two teams are very even teams, and the series will likely go to 7 games. The teams are relatively evenly matched defensively, with the North Stars holding a slight edge in goals against (48) to the Jets' 51. This is reflected in the teams' relatively close shots against per game of 31.22 (Toronto) and 32.83 (Winnipeg); their penalty kills are also fairly close, the Jets killing penalties at a rate of 75.68%, while the North Stars kill at a rate of 78.95%. The Jets do hold a commanding advantage offensively, though, as they have scored 72 goals to the North Stars 57, an advantage of 15 goals. This offensive advantage is also showcased in their power play percentage, as the Jets have converted on 23.08% of their opportunities, while the North Stars have only managed to convert on 13.04% of chances. Overall, while the 2 teams are relatively close, Winnipeg will take this in 7 games.

TASK SIX: 1. You scored the overtime winner in Game 6 to force a Game 7 that your team would eventually win. How did it feel to come up clutch for your team? <a href='index.php?showuser=2264' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-10'>ToeDragon84</a>

2. You scored the game winning goal in Game 7, but you also led your team in hits in the playoffs. How have you managed to balance offensive production and laying the body? <a href='index.php?showuser=2327' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-69'>ztevans</a>

3. How does it feel to win the Challenge Cup in your rookie season? <a href='index.php?showuser=2651' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>gfridge</a>

TASK ONE: Pick either of the teams currently in the finals. Which game of theirs in the playoffs was the most important/crucial in them getting to this point this season? Must be at least 150 words and include either two statistics or some (reasonable) justification of narrative justifying your choice.

I think for the Jets, you have to say that game 3 against the Renegades was the most important win in their playoff journey. Last season, the Jets faced the Renegades in the 1st round, won the first 2 games convincingly but were eventually knocked out by the eventual champions in 6 games. After winning the 1st 2 games convincingly, the Jets needed to win that 3rd game to get over the hump, and they not only won but absolutely dominated. They ended up winning that game 3 7-1, outshooting their opponents 42-28. Big Manious had a stat line for the ages in that game with 1 goals, 4 assists for 5 points, +3, 2 PIM, 2 SOG, 3 Hits, 4 Blocked shots. With Game 3 won, the Jets were able to hold a convincing lead that would take legitimate effort to blow, and won the next game, before beating the Riot in 7 to get to the finals.

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S37 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.
There are so many options available, but I'm going to go for Isaac Cormier-Hale this time around. His development has been great, and he's a core member of this Jets team is looking really solid going into this series against the Toronto North Stars. He is paired with a top-tier defenseman with Max Weber, which has allowed him to operate in the shadows, and he has definitely done that. His defensive abilities were a force to be reckoned with up to this point, and his on-ice intelligence is very difficult to match. With 10 points as a defenseman in 11 games, as well as being a solid defensive contributor with 14 blocked shots throughout all 18 games played, hard to discount his two-way ability. Look for ICH to be a significant contributor on not only this S37 Jets team but for many seasons to come as he settles into an important role in the Jets Core.

TASK FOUR: Who is the favorite and who is the underdog of this series? Are they almost even, or is there a big skill difference between the two teams? Must be at least 150 words and include at least three statistics in support.

I'd have to say that the Jets are most likely the favorites over the North Stars going into this series, and that's hard to argue. The Jets were for a second time, dominant in the regular season, but lacked that extra edge to put their team over the top, but they come into this series having lead the league in the regular season in GPG with 3.44, as well as in shots for per game with 35.92. They are a ridiculously strong offensive team, and it will be hard to see them being stopped by the North Stars this season. With only 5 penalty minutes per game, they also have the important trait of discipline, that we've seen kill strong teams countless times. The North Stars, on the other hand, wouldn't have even made the playoffs in the Western Conference, with 54 points. The Jets come into this series too strong to beat for me.
