Vancouver Whalers vs St. Louis Scarecrows
 Whalers 4 -  Scarecrows 3

The St Louis Scarecrows were red hot and feeling confident after having the best record the SMJHL S42 preseason. Heading into the first game of the Crow were excited to start the season on their home ice. Although those hopes were dashed in the end, as the Vancouver Whalers showed up to play.

The first period was all Vancouver Whalers. The Whalers went up two to nothing in the first behind goals from Luke Thomason and Jean-Luc Picard. Although the game play in the first got a little chippy with St. Louis ranking up six minutes in penalties for hooking and high-sticking while Vancouver played a bit more disciplined game and got only one penalty.

Luke Thomason notches his first of the season.

If the first period was all Whales and second period was all Scarecrows. Tony Snow and Nicholas Williams each got their first goals of the season and tied up the game heading into the third period. St Louis played a bit more a disciplined game and only had one penalty, which was matched by Whalers.

Tony Snow gets his first of the season.

The third period saw both teams score one more goal apiece. The third saw David Kastrba getting his first goal of the season for the Whalers. While Jack Daniels also got his first goal of the season for St. Louis with an assist from Nicholas Williams. Giving Williams his second point of the game. The third period also  saw the St. Louis rookie Nikolaj Boyle make a name for himself on the physical front by instigating a fight with Vancouver veteran Guts O'Bigbers. The duo fought to a draw but rookie Boyle has set the tone that, he is not to be trifled with. So with the third period ending in a tie the game headed to over time.

Boyle and O'biggers going at it.

While the overtime period was nerve racking, it was also scoreless. The overtime period was a defensive marvel with Vancouver having the only shot on goal for the period. As both teams shut down their opponents offenses. Leading the game to one of the more controversial parts of the SHL game, the shootout.  Which saw both teams go back and forth until the Whalers Herb Robert ending it with a beautiful shot.

The game ended with a four to three score giving the Whaler getting their first win of the season while the Scarecrows were able to eke out a point by forcing overtime.  Vancouver’s Greg Santos had 28 saves in his first win of the season. While St. Louis’s Friedrich Schmidt had 33 saves in the loss. Your three stars saw a combination of both teams. With St. Louis’s Nicholas Williams earning the first star of the game for his two-point effort. While Vancouver’s David Kastrba and Luke Thomason earn second and third stars of the game respectively for their offensive contributions to the game. The full box score can be found at the link below.

3 Stars of the Game.

#1 Nicholas Williams(STL) - Hard to argue why he shouldn't be #1 of the night. With only 7 minutes of ice time, Nicholas put up massive numbers for the night. For starters, he scored a goal in the second period tying the game up for the Scarecrowing before going into the third period. If the goal wasn't enough he also got an assist late into the third, and that goal tied up the game again for the scarecrows, having them go into overtime. For the night, Nicholas went +2 for the night, and he only took 1 shot, that ended up a goal. Only playing 7 minutes for the night, he had a hell of a game.

#2 David Kastrba (VAN) - A great pick for the second star this game. A leader on and off the ice for the whalers, he certainly put in work this game. Scoring in the 3rd period gave the Whalers a goal advantage in the third and ultimately helped the whalers stay in the game when the Scarecrows scored in the 3rd period. Out of his 2 shots on goal, he scored on one of them, and he played an impressive 19.24 minutes of the game with at +1 +/-.

#3 Luke Thomason(VAN) - For his first game ever of the SMJHL he had a great night. Getting 3rd star his first game is even better from this LW rookie. To start the 1st period, Luke scored his first ever goal as a whaler, getting Vancouver the lead at a very early start. Even though he got a -1 +/- overall, the goal that he got helps balance it out. We also saw a little bit of physicality out of him, with 2 hits overall. Bright things for him if he stays the path he is.

Underrated Player of the game.

When looking for underrated players of the game, you have to look at a couple things. This underrated player is Greg Santos, the goalie for Vancouver. Greg did not have the best of his games, but the most important thing for the goalie is to stop shots when it mattered, and he did. Having the game go into overtime on the first game but have been a little nerving-racking for him, but he stayed strong and blocked every shootout shot he was faced with. For the regulation periods, he went 28 blocked shots to 31 with a save % at .903, very respectable.

Faceoff Breakdown.

To start off with there was 93 Faceoffs in this game. Vancouver Whalers won 50/93(53%) of the faceoffs, and the Scarecrows won 43/90(47%) of the faceoffs for all 3 periods. This shows that the Whalers were more dominant at the start of the faceoffs, but in the end, they both got 3 goals each in regulation time. THe person that won the most faceoffs was Guts O'Bigbers, wining 18/25(72%) of his faceoffs. For the Scarecrow, the person with the best faceoff winning percentage, with over 10 faceoffs, was Jack Daniels, who won 9/14(64%) of his faceoffs.

On each team, the worst faceoff % was Soren Kierkegaard for the Whalers, with 2/12(16%) of the faceoffs won. For the Scarecrows that was Nikolaj Boyle who won 9/18(50%) of the faceoffs. This shows that both teams still have very good faceoff people, and they still have people that have a lot to improve of as team.

SMJHL Player of the Game
Nicholas Williams
Williams was no doubt the player of the game tonight, the man was on the ice for 7 minutes and delivered. He scored the 2nd goal for St. Louis tying it up 2 -2. Nicholas Williams also had an assist in the 3rd period with him getting a pass from Jack Daniels which he passed to Rowdy Smithers who then passed it back to Jack Daniels tying up the game once again 3 - 3. Overall with time he was given Nicholas Williams performed excellent with a total of 2 points this game but St. Louis could get the win but was without doubt Player of the Game

1v1 Me Bro w/ JayWhy

Let's take a look at team contributions for a couple of players from both of these teams tonight. We could take a look at Eriks Skalbergs and Jack Daniels, both putting up 8 shots for their teams. However, instead we'll be taking a look at Herb Roberts for Vancouver and Nicholas Falk for St. Louis.

Roberts played a great game all around, and was third on his team and in this game in shots on goal with 5 for the evening. He was a physical force who played 23 minutes of gametime and yet didn't record a point in the matter. He had 2 hits, showing his physicality, but was more so just the player to draw defenders and force the issue.

Falk on the other hand, he was everywhere for his team. He was the primary assist on the first goal of the game for St. Louis, finding Tony Snow behind the defense. He showed a great touch in this game while managing to be a defensive monster for his team with 2 hits and a shot block as well. The key to Falk's game is his endurance, he played over 25 minutes and nearly 5 whole minutes on the penalty kill! He was fantastic in the defensive zone, and was a key to shutting down Roberts who played nearly identical time on the powerplay.

Falk was all over Roberts anytime he came on the ice with the man-advantage, and it shows in the boxscore. However, when it comes to this comparison of the two, it comes down to the end of the game -- the shootout.

With the opportunity to put the onus on Vancouver, Falk drove into the net with speed to catch Santos off-guard. He sailed the puck high and wide, however, and found himself with his head down heading back to the bench.

Herb Robert was given an opportunity just a few shooters later, coming in tight with a double-fake into a back-hand. Robert was able to force Schmidt down early, and managed to stun the elder statesmen in net to bring home the win for his team.

With that, we can see how Falk was dominant during regular play. Robert, on the other hand, was able to show his skill and physicality, opening lanes for his teammates and finishing with a beautiful shootout goal. Both are spectacular players who did well this evening, but Robert won out in the end.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.

Special Teams Report

Good evening and welcome to the Special Teams Report. As this is a new program, a brief explanation of what we do on this show. We analyze the special team units on both teams and grade them on how well they performed.
Tonight we look at the Vancouver Whalers' and the St. Louis Scarecrows' overtime nail biter, and the penalties that got us there.

First Period
-Vancouver only took 1 penalty this period, coming from Soren Kierkegaard for a high stick at 4:00. The high sticking was only seconds after a face off. Kierkegaard could have avoided this entirely if just kept his stick on the ice. Regardless, Vancouver's' Penalty Kill unit shut down St. Louis' power play.
-St Louis lacked discipline in the first, taking a total of 3 penalties. Kiko Rytmeyr gets called for hooking at 12:04. Vancouver's power play unit waste no time and pots one in at 12:20 courtesy of defenseman Jean-Luc Placard. Gordie Maple gets called for hooking at 13:41. St Louis' penalty kill squad does not do a good job at clearing the puck. Vancouver was on a complete war path. Although they shot 11 times, only 2 shots reached goaltender Friedrich Schmidt. Finally at 16:24 Ricky Weaver gets called for high sticking, and once again Vancouver's power play unit is charging ahead. This time Schmidt blocks 5 shots and Gordie Maple blocks 1. St. Louis' PK unit needs some work.

Second Period
-Vancouver, again, only takes one penalty. This one coming from Jean-Luc Picard at 5:56 for tripping. St. Louis PP unit did an alright job at on this power play, but failed to score a goal. Greg Santos stopped both shots that reached the net.
-St. Louis only gets Gordie Maple called for boarding at 14:30. Vancouver's PP looks tired for this attempt. They only record 2 shots on net both stopped by Schmidt. Not only that, but St. Louis' PK unit was playing aggressive and forced them to ice the puck by the end.

Third Period
Now here is where things get interesting. Just a little over half way though the period, at 11:12, Vancouver's center Guts O'Bigbers and St. Louis' Center Nikolaj Boyle fight until the officials pull them off each other, ending the fight in a draw.
-Vancouver's O'Bigber gets 5 for fighting.
-St. Louis' Boyle gets 5 for fighting and a game misconduct for instigating the fight. He is thrown out of the game and Vancouver is on the power play once again. Schmidt faces 3 shots and stops them all. Last  penalty of the game goes to Gordie Maple at 16:21 for hooking. Gordie really lacked discipline all game long. No goals were scored on this attempt.

St. Louis - Power Play 0 on 2 attempts (0%)  Penalty Kill 5 on 6 attempts (83.33%)

Vancouver - Power Play 1 on 6 attempts (16.67%)  Penalty Kill 2 on 2 attempts (100%)

Although Vancouver's power play unit had a lot of attempts they could only finish one time on the man advantage. Their PK unit played a great shut down game.
St. Louis could not finish on their man advantage at all. Their PK played good, but should not be on the ice that much.

Today's Barstool Player of the Game as well as the Barstool Rookie of the game is none other than Nicholas Williams of the St. Louis Scarecrows and it wasn't even close. The game between the St. Louis Scarecrows and the Vancouver Whalers was a high scoring game in which St. Louis won in a shootout over Vancouver 4-3. The Rookie 6th round pick in this past years SMJHL entry draft is looking to make a name on the scarecrows squad and more games like this one will only help build his case. The rookie winger played just 7 minutes but you would have expected him to play much more than that when after you realize that Nicholas scored with just 3:18 left in the 2nd period to put the Scarecrows up 2-1. The young winger didn't stop there tho as he helped set up the game tying goal to tie the game up at 3 with just over 5 minutes left in the game. Two key moments in this game involved Williams. St. Louis eventually would go on to lose the game in a shootout but its hard to blame the rookie winger due to his 2 point game while allowing no goals when he was on the ice. He played a complete two way game and its only a matter of time before Nicholas is fighting for more minutes to produce like he did in today's game.

Hi everyone, it is now time for our classic Fail of the game,  brought to you by Harvey's.

Tonight, we look at yet another player who can't seem to withstand the pressure of the shootout. Despite getting the third star of the game, Luke Thomason didn't earn it for his shootout performance. As you can see below, Thomason lost balance and the puck when he tripped on the blue line, making it easier than easy for Friedrich Schmidt to stop the puck. Can't blame it on the ice for it was the first shot of the shootout. Lucky for Thomason, his teammate Herb Robert won it for the Whalers anyways.

Seagull here with the post-game CHEW report! Today, my fellow Czech brothers and sisters, we are rewinding back to the beginning of this year’s SMJHL season looking at the Vancouver Whalers vs the St.Louis Scarecrows. It was an exciting match however in the end the Whalers bested the Scarecrows in a shootout.

Goals are exciting but fights are even better, and boy there was a doozy this match! The #CHEWonTHAT moment of the game is when rookie Nikolaj Boyle put up the dukes, in the 3rd period, against SMJHL vet Guts O’Bigbers. It was a well fought and a well timed fight. Both teams had been trying to generate some excitement/ momentum on the bench. Boyle felt he had to make a statement in this game and to the league. He is was not to be pushed around. With only three other fight ending in draws, in O’Bigbers career, he is not much of an opponent but put up a good show. However, with O’Bigbers development stagnating and Boyle very much on the rise, this fight may be symbolizing a challenge to the old guard and that it is time a for change a new, younger, and exciting changing of the guard.

Punching Bag Of The Game
Alex Adani

Alex Andani is sure going to be feeling terrible after tonight's bang-up job he received. It's very clear that the coach of the Scarecrows instructed his guys to be extra physical with Andani tonight. He was hit by five different 'Crows players, and coughed up the puck twice. Ultimately, he did not cost his team the game, but he'll be feeling the effects from tonight for quite some time going forward. No word from the SMJHL front office if any inquiry into the obvious targeting job will be filed. Andani was unable to be reached for contact after the game.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Everytime you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Vancouver Whalers: 50 wins on 93 faceoffs taken ( 53,7%)
St. Louis Scarecrows: 43 wins on 93 faceoffs taken (46,3%)

Close game in the faceoffs circle here. The Vancouver Whalers with quite a good advantage.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: Vancouver Whaler' center Guts O'Bigbers with 18 wins on 25 faceoff taken (72,0%)
Loser: Vancouver Whalers' center Soren Kierkegaard with 2 wins on 12 faceoff taken (16,7%)

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
We look into the fight between Guts O'Bigbers and Nikolaj Boyle

[Image: Guy+gets+his+ass+kicked+by+kid+in+hockey...463613.gif]

Jokes aside, there was a fight. Gloves were dropped so major penalty is a no brainer.
What can be questioned though is should Boyle got a game misconduct for starting the fight? At the end of the day it takes two to fight.
If fighting is to be accepted I don't think different punishment for the player who threw the first punch, it gets silly that way.

In many European leagues fighting equals immediate game misconduct. But we don't want any of that here do we?

Are Tensions Starting to Boyle over in St. Louis?

While St. Louis isn't expected to be a contender this year in the SMJHL they put a very strong performance together against the Whalers, who are by many considered a favourite to take it all this year. Vancouver had to wait until the 3rd shot of the shootout to claim victory over St. Louis and perhaps they wouldn't have made it that far at all if it wasn't for the help of one player. That one player happened to be wearing a scarecrows jersey this evening. Nikolaj Boyle took 17 PIMs in the 13 minutes of ice time he had this evening while being the 1 player on the Scarecrows to have a negative plus-minus rating. Now some might say that his antics inspired his team to come back after he was ejected, but not this reporter. They probably would never have been down in the first place if this player was left in the press box. (157 words)
