Game 20: Kelowna vs Anchorage
Knights  1 - Armada 2 (OT)
Game link.

Welcome to Sunday night hockey in Canada. Tonight we'll be bringing you the post game show from Kelowna in beautiful British Columbia as Anchorage come to town. After a mixed two win two loss start to the season the Armada needed to be on the top of their game to turn over Kelowna who have had a perfect four win start to the season. As it turned out we had a close run affair characterised by hard hitting and excellent goaltending.

The first period started off with both teams playing cautiously taking turns to probe at the other. After trading shots Kelowna started to ramp up the pressure and take control of the game forcing the Armada to play more defensively. This lead to our first big highlight of the game at 07:46 in the first period as Ben Blue came up big to keep the game level.

The save seemed to re-energise the Armada who perhaps lacking as much experience and skill as the Knights started trying to impose themselves physically. Two of the biggest hits came just after the thirteenth minute mark, the first McLovin on Fischer and as the puck went loose Elias was caught unaware by big Jonatan Back.

This physical approach allowed Anchorage to climb back into the game momentarily but Kelowna kept coming back at them and the Armada gradually started to succumb to the pressure. However as the period edged towards the end the Armada won a face off in the Knights zone St. Raegan won the draw against Uriel and Carter II snapped a quick wrister to get his first of the season and give the Armada the go ahead goal.

Anchorage leading after the first 0-1 despite being behind in the shot totals 18 to 8.

2nd: After having a fire lit under them the Knights came out quickly in the second. Anchorage continued to take the body with both Tucker Baloo and Jordan Von Matt landing big hits. This physical approach fell foul of the refs though and Baloo was called for an interference penalty and sent to the box for two minutes although he was possibly lucky not to get more.

A big feature of the Knights game so far had been getting bodies in front of the net and this was no different on the powerplay. With the man advantage Kelowna was finally able to get one past the excellent Blue. Cash Savage getting his third of the season in only five games to tie it up.

Fast forward to the eighth minute of the period. The Armada are coming back strongly and have a huge chance to go back in front with Aittokallio, McLovin and Von Matt all have chances in a goal mouth scramble. Vitale was equal to the task though coming up trumps with this spectacular save.

Right as the period entered the last minute Doug Dimmadome won a faceoff in his own zone and burst up ice. Riding through contact he beat Savage to go one on one with Vitale but couldn't make the opportunity count. A huge missed chance for the Armada.

All tied up at the end of the second with Kelowna maintaining the upper hand by out shooting the Armada by 17 to 7.

3rd: After two tight periods perhaps tired legs would mean more opportunities. Chances were few and far between though as both teams played more conservatively maybe looking to make sure they got at least a point out of what was becoming a tough match up. The only big chance came when Kelowna defenseman Izuku flew down the ice and rang a slapper off of the bar.

After a relatively uneventful third period we headed into overtime with the scores locked up at one apiece. The shot count for the third a much closer 8 to 7 for Kelowna.

OT: Overtime followed the trend set in the third. Both teams seemed content to save energy for upcoming games in the schedule and while Kelowna continued to have the better chances there wasn't too much to trouble Benjamin Blue who made three comfortable saves to send us through to the shootout.

Shootout: With both goalies dominating the game it was going to take something special to win it. Doug Dimmadome attoned for his earlier one on one miss with an audacious between the legs spin-o-rama to get the only goal of the shootout and give Anchorage a 1-2 win!

3 stars:

1st: Benjamin Blue (ANC), 43 saves from 44 shots - (0.977)

The Anchorage goalie is thoroughly deserving of the first star. Saving all but one of a massive 44 shots and denying all three shootout attempts.
2nd: Cameron Carter II (ANC), 1 goal, +1, 19:05 minutes

The left winger opened his scoring account for the season with a beautiful snipe from the edge of the circle.

3rd: Kata Vilde (KEL), 22 saves from 23 shots - (0.957)

Normally posting 0.957 would be enough for the win. Unfortunately Blue was just a bit better tonight but its enough to earn Wilde the third star.

SHOOTOUT ANALYSIS

With the game tied at 1 a piece and unable to be decided in overtime, the Kelowna Knights and the Anchorage Armada are heading to a shootout.

First up for the Knights, Boris Denisovich. Boris skates in slow, forehand, backhand, shoots... saved by Benjamin Blue. The puck bounces off of Blue's catcher and wide of the net.
Second shooter, Doug Dimmadome for Anchorage. Skates in fast, starts to go wide, spin-o-rama, puck through his legs, back hand... Scores! 1-0. Dimmadome left Kata Vilde scratching his head in disbelief.
Next up, Daddy Mack for the Knights,  Daddy comes in skating fast and wide, winds up and slaps towards the top left... Saved by Blue. Blue makes no mistake as he stops the high speed bullet.
Here comes Grayson St. Raegan for the Armada, Skates slow through the slot, forehand fakes, tries for five hole... Saved by Vilde. Vilde could see his trick coming a mile away. Closed the pads tight and denies a good chance.
Next up is Matej Elias for Kelowna, a lot of pressure building right now. If he scores, the shootout continues, if it is a save, Anchorage wins. Skates wide, puck on his forehand, pulls back, though legs back hand shoots... Saved by Benjamin Blue. Anchorage wins! 2-1 in the shootout!

Though both goalies played an excellent game, one would have to lose.
Anchorage's goalie, Kata Vilde came out on top. Posting a 0.957 save percentage and stopping all but one goal all game.
Benjamin Blue posted a 0.977 save percentage and played an outstanding game, facing 44 shots.

Comparing the Goal Scorers and how they ultimately scored their goals.

With only two goals scored during regulation in this game, it was largely a pretty boring affair. However, there were moments of excitement. Those moments were very, very different however. As such, we're taking a look at the game footage (the link/play by play) and deciphering what makes the two goal scorers special and how they managed to score their goals.

We start in the first period with Cameron Carter II being the first on the scoresheet for the game on behalf of the Anchorage Armada. It's more of a simple drawn play, with the face-off to the left of Kata Vilde. Carter lines up on his off-wing and high in the circle. Grayson St. Raegan takes the face-off and pops the puck to his right where Carter takes one step into it and fires the shot into traffic.

The beauty of a face-off for a skilled shooter and goal scorer like Cater comes in the skill of placement. Off the face-off, Carter knows the front of the net is crowded with two Knights -- a forward and a defenseman -- as well as his own counterpart to set what is effectively a screen for him. When taking a shot in less than a second, it seems impossible to truly aim. However, Carter knows he needs to take a step up to get into the sweet spot where he surprises Vilde and gets the puck just by the glove.

To contrast this with the goal for the Knights later on in the second period, we first need to look at the penalty for interference taken by Tucker Baloo just past teh frist minute. Anchorage managed to hold off Kelowna for the majority of the kill, but found themselves tired in the second minute of the kill.

Vilde grabs the puck off a dump in while Anchorage goes for a change. He leaves it off behind the net for Cash Savage to come around and swing up the wall. As the line change is happening, the players all try to recover back onto Savage. He lays off by throwing the puck over at his own blue line for Kevin Maddox to skate into. Maddox gets past the red line, is being closed in on and wraps it around the boards. McLovin gets back to grab it, but Savage is using his head of steam from his race up the boards and bumps him off the puck, then tapping it back to Maddox swinging over into his spot on the point for the powerplay. McLovin challenges, Maddox flips it over to Savage.

This is where things get interesting. Savage takes a shot low and wide at Blue, who kicks it out, but doesn't seem to pay any mind to where it's heading. With the defense having collapsed to the right side, Peter Walker is able to get the puck pretty easily. Anchorage is backtracking into their spots, and Walker takes an extra moment to take the shot which allows Grayson St. Raegan to get back and block the shot. However it deflects off him to the high slot where Savage slides over and fires a shot hard at the net!

It went wide, wraps around the boards and with Anchorage now setting their spots more, Walker is able to corral it again. He draws out a couple of defenders as he walks it back up the boards and watches as Savage drives into the slot and toward the net. Firing a wrister, Walker aims it a little wide where Savage makes the quick move and uses his great hand-eye coordination to deflect it into the net and tie the game.

As you can see, Kelowna used it's heavy pressure attack and timed themselves against a line change to give openings and fluster the defense. Once flustered, they continued the pressure and kept the shots going on net until finally it landed for them.

These two goals were incredibly different. Both were in some way set plays, one where it was immediate and one where it took some time and forced some chaos. Both accomplish the ultimate goal of scoring, while highlighting the similar intelligence and different skills in power versus touch that these two players use.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.

Today's Barstool Player of the Game is Benjamin Blue, goalie for the Anchorage Armada. The former season 40 3rd rounder and season 41 Tom Corcoran Trophy winner stopped 43 of 44 shots against the high powered Kelowna Knights which is no easy task as they are one of the favorites to make a deep, deep run in this years playoffs. Benjamin made key saves throughout the game but his play in the shootout is what stood out the most. Blue saved all 3 shots he faced in the shootout against the highly skilled Boris Denisovich, Daddy Mack, and Matej Elias. Without the stellar play of Benjamin Blue, Anchorage would not have won the game. He clearly stood out as today's Barstool Player of the Game.

Today's game write up will focus on Game #20 of the season.

Kelowna  Knights  vs Anchorage  Armada

Kelowna looks to remind a perfect 5 and 0 on the season, while Anchorage hopes to get back on track following a loss to Colorado.

Key Moments
Cash Savage had the key moment for the Knights in the 2nd, scoring the line goal for his team on the powerplay and helping send the game to an eventual shootout. The Armada key moment occurred in the 1st with a Cameron Cafter II goal.

Top Star of the Game
Benjamin Blue and Kata Vilde both had incredible games tonight, so for me they share the top star of this game

Seagull here yet again ,with the post-game CHEW report! Today, my fellow Czech brothers and sisters, we are covering game 20 of the SMJHL season with the Kelowna Knights vs Anchorage Armada. Another nail biting game in the SMJHL ; with the Armada dueling the Knights to the bitter end, for a shootout win against the heavy favourites.

The game itself was a very low scoring game with only one regular-time goal for each side. The game could have easily been in favour of the Knights out shooting the Armada 44 to 23. However the Armada’s net-minder Benjamin Blue was able to stand firm and keep his team in the game! #CHEWonTHAT. Blue, not being a slouch to difficult situations. The goal tender was on the team when it was transitioning the sale/move of the team from George Town to Anchorage, this past season. Even through the transition, he had an impressive S41 year. He was: 2nd in the league with a 2.73 GAA, 1st with .901 SV%, 2nd in shots faced. Don't expect him to go down without a fight, he will battle against the other top goalies of the league .He hopes to replicate and improve on these numbers, this season, now that the Armada have settled and are only looking forward to great things!

Game 20: Kelowna Knights vs. Anchorage Armada
Knights  1-2  Armada

Rookie of the Game: Cameron Carter II
This one was actually pretty tough. Its a little bit controversial, but my Rookie of the Game goes to Jax Aittokallio. No, he didn't score himself any points in the game but neither did any other rookie. I chose him because of the impact that he had in the faceoff dot. Aittokallio took 32 faceoffs this game and won 19 of them, that is good for a 59% success rate in faceoffs. In this league its hard for rookies to step in and be able to take the role of a center and thrive with it, and he definitely did this game.

Game Theme Summary
Kelowna Knights 1 - Anchorage Armada 2

This is the beginning of a series that will be hosted by the Smirnov Light agency, we will recap how exactly the game went and what common themes were seen throughout the game.

Goalies:
Jesus these goalies were absolutely unreal, Benjamin Blue was able to upstage the other goalie -- Kata Vilde -- by making 43 stops from 44 shots. Vilde also did well and was only beat once prior to the penalty shootout. Although the Knights outshot the Armada by 21 shots both goalies were a reason why their teams were competitive.

Penalties:
The Anchorage Armada were lucky this game as they gifted the Knights plenty of opportunities on the power play (5) compared to their 2 chances and the Knights only converted once. They were lucky and penalties left the Armada players gassed. However goalie Benjamin Blue made up for it and saved the team.

"How did we lose this?" is what the Kelowna Knights gotta ask themselves after this game against the Anchorage Armada. After a truly dominating performance especially through the first two periods, the Knights only find themselves with the loser point after failing to decide this game early on and then continuing their scoring woes into the shootout. Anchorage has their goalie Benjamin Blue to thank who made an incredible 43 saves on 44 shots, keeping a clean sheet throughout the first period where the Knights outright dominated the Armada. It would take a powerplay for the Knights to finally put one past Blue early on in the second, but that would be the last time they beat this goaltender tonight and that includes the shootout. It was Doug Dimmadone who drove the dagger into the Knight's heart there, beating a very solid Kata Vilde who had been unbeaten on the season so far. Kelowna would end up outshooting Anchorage 44-23, but at the end of the day the only number that matters is the 1-2 on the scoreboard. It's gonna be interesting to see how the Knights react to this loss now, after a dominant start to the season could this loss be a turning point that showed the other teams around the league how to beat Kelowna or will the Knights be able to bounce right back?

Defensive forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

A low scoring affair today in Anchorage, though one forward shines through today. Grayson St. Reagan of the hometown Armada wins defensive forward of the game today. The top line forward had an impressive display today on the defensive side of the game on top of his assist on the only armada goal of the night. St. Reagan lead the Armada forwards with 2 shot blocks and 1 hit. He spent 4 minutes and 35 seconds on the penalty kill and was a solid 52% from the dot. The most impressive stat though is his 26 minutes and 16 seconds of minutes played throughout the game and ending up a +1. St. Reagan was not scored on during 5v5 play despite playing almost half the game. His defensive presence throughout the game allowed the Armada to push through and win in a shootout despite being outshot 44-23.

Kelowna Feeling Blue After Heartbreaking Loss to Anchorage

It's not often you leave a game with a loss after only letting in one goal. Sadly, that's where Kelowna backstop Kata Vilde finds himself this evening. When asked about the game, he was quoted as saying "It's tough not to get the win tonight. I feel like our guys went out there and really tried there best. I've gotta give it to [Blue], really good game out there tonight, he stole the win for them. 9 times out of 10 we win that game if he isn't as hot as he was".

Benjamin Blue truly was spectacular this evening. Stopping 43 of 44 stops and all 3 he faced in the shootout. He too commended the opposing goaltender, but when asked about Vilde's comments Blue said "I think it's unfair to look at the shot totals tonight and say we were outplayed. Our system is to keep guys to the outside and not let them get any quality chances. I didn't feel like I had a large workload despite the volume of shots. I think we deserved the W as a team and I'm proud of my boys". (189 words)

Week One.  Game Twenty.  Kelowna Knights Knights  versus Anchorage Armada Armada

Analysis of the First Star: Benjamin Blue Armada

This was a defensive battle royale between these two team with Anchorage coming out victorious after a shoot-out.  Benjamin Blue, the goalie for the Armada stood on his head on more than one occasion to keep his team from being outscored.

He allowed only the one goal on an impressive 44 shots by the opponent over the three periods plus the over-time. His final stop in the shootout was a beautiful read by Benjamin when Matej Elias tried to deke him out with a quick shuffle to the backhand as he approached the crease.  Somehow, our boy Blue read it the entire way and made an easy save on the final weak shot that did not have much mustard left on it.

Great Job Benjamin!

Goaltending performance review:

Kata Vilde (Kelowna): While his counterpart in the Armada net stood on his head, Vilde wasn’t to be overshadowed while facing fewer shots. 22 saves on 23 shot was enough to earn the Knights a point, but Vilde was beat by the first Armada shooter to give their opponents the win. If Kelowna hadn’t run into a white hot goalie, it’s safe to assume the Knights would have gotten the win behind this kind of fantastic performance by their goalie.

Benjamin Blue (Anchorage): If a goalie ever deserved a win solely based around their performance, it was Blue against the Knights. He made 43 saves on 44 shots against a powerhouse Kelowna team that is the favorite for the 4 Star Cup. Even more so, he came up big during the shootout, stopping all three Knights shooters to drag his team to the victory. One can only hope he had a well-earned rest and a relaxing evening after this gritty performance.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

Back again with another edition of the Bust of the Game Award. This is another tough one to give out, seeing as Kelowna outplayed Anchorage, yet still ended up with the loss. The coveted Bust of the Game award goes to Fenton Uriel. With 21 minutes of ice time, Uriel doesn't have a whole lot to show for it. He posted an impressive 3 shots, but none could find twine, and he was on the ice for the game winning goal against, which is a tough pill to swallow for a player of this calibre. They say the SMJHL builds character for things to come in the SHL, and this was definitely a character building game for Fenton. We know he can bounce back and prove that he is elite.
