The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

Back again with another edition of the Bust of the Game Award. This is another tough one to give out, seeing as Kelowna outplayed Anchorage, yet still ended up with the loss. The coveted Bust of the Game award goes to Fenton Uriel. With 21 minutes of ice time, Uriel doesn't have a whole lot to show for it. He posted an impressive 3 shots, but none could find twine, and he was on the ice for the game winning goal against, which is a tough pill to swallow for a player of this calibre. They say the SMJHL builds character for things to come in the SHL, and this was definitely a character building game for Fenton. We know he can bounce back and prove that he is elite.

an early season shocker out of Anchorage, pulling out a win over last year's champions, the Kelowna Knights. They were helped to the win largely by their goalie, Benjamin Blue who stopped 43 of the 44 shots they allowed him to face. With this performance he picked up a well deserved first star of the night. The lone goal against him came on one of Kelowna's 5 powerplays, which just couldn't seem to get the juices flowing tonight. the game needed to go all the way to a shootout where Anchorage only needed to pop one, as Blue continued his stellar goaltending from regulation and overtime.

Goaltending breakdown-
Kata Vilde: 22 saves on 23 shots, .957 S%
If you were asked to describe this game, goalie duel is a phrase that comes to mind. Both tendies playing out of their mind in a grueling match of athleticism, positioning, and luck. Vilde couldn't secure the win even though Kelowna dominated the entire game, but its not that Vilde played bad, its that Blue played better. Vilde let in an early goal, and only stopped 7 of 8 shots in the first period. A better second period ensued, and Vilde blanked the Armada on a mere 7 shots. Rinse and repeat in the third as another 7 shots were easily saved by Vilde leading to overtime. A lone shot found its way to Vilde during overtime but the game was far from over as he saved it and forced the shootout. Vilde showed weakness in the shootout, letting in the first attempt, and while he tried to salvage it with two saves after that, his team was unable to score at the other end. A disappointing night for Kelowna fans but promising as their goaltender still posted an amazing .957 save percentage. Nothing to scoff at.

Benjamin Blue: 43 saves on 44 shots, .977 S%

Blue ascended mortal status this game, as he was straight up attacked by shots the entire game. Blue saw 24 shots before he let one in, a game's worth of shots in only the first 30 minutes. He proceeded to save 15 more in regulation, 3 in overtime, and 3 rounds of a shootout sealing the fate of the Knights and proving his god status. A truly jaw dropping performance by Blue, winning the game for his team, his coaches, and his fans.

Upset of the Week

Kelowna will want this one back in a hurry. Anchorage literally stole this one thanks to an amazing performance by Benjamin Blue. The net-minder was beaten once all day by Cash Savage on a power play. Kemowna racked up 44 shots and only had one goal to show for it. I think they are still scratching their head with this loss. It managed to come down to a shootout and Blue came up big making three saves. He looked unstoppable out there when his team was at full strength. Sometimes goalies have those games where they will just not be denied, and Blue had one of these here. What a performance.

Welcome to the third edition of Shot Blocker of the Game.

The winner of Shot Blocker of the Game is Deku Izuku of the Vancouver Whalers!

Deku Izuku was one of 3 players with 2 shots blocked in this game and it came during a time when the Armada were pressing for about 20 seconds. The Armada gained the zone and set up shop. They moved the puck around the blueline to get there shot and Izuku went to a knee to block the first shot, the puck carries over to Jonathan Back who rifled it towards the net only to find a kneeling Izuku once again. The Whalers then cleared the zone and ended the Armada attack. Unfortunately for Izuku, the trend continues as the award again goes to a player who's team lost the game.

Blues' Goon of the Game

Althought there wasn’t many guys on the ice in this game who stood out as a Goon of the Game, today’s honours go to the one, the only…Steve McGirthensons! McGirthensons came out of today’s match up with a pair of minor penalties, tied for the most on his team with fellow goony Tucker Baloo. Both players were equally qorthy of Goon of the Game honours, but I believe the McGrithensons really did a lot more grinding in this game the Baloo, although Baloo has a name much more fit for a goon. Steve posted an 8/13 in the dot, which is a solid grind while playing only 15:11 in a game. He worked his ass off in this game and that really earned him the Goon of the Game award for this game.

Pivonka's Pick

With the Knights taking on the Armada and going all the way to a shootout there's only one person to zero in on and that's Peter Walker. Walker put up an impressive 5 shots on goal and a difference making 3 hits, played nearly 20 minutes and went 16/28 on the faceoffs. Walker managed an assist for his efforts and was easily the catalyst on offense for the Knights who put up 44 shots all together. The Knights have to do more to follow the example of Walker and step up their physical play as they only managed 18 hits total throughout the game. Kelowna can't concede the physical game along the boards or they're going to lose on the scoreboard.

*** THE MOST EXCITING MINUTE OF THE GAME ***

(For my PGS Analyses, I will find the 1-minute stretch of the game which I deemed to be the most exciting, and give a play by play thereof)

1st Period. 18:00 -> 19:00

------------------------------

Von Matt with the pass to Natostado in front! He SHOOTS!

What a SAVE! Kicked out by Vilde! The rebound is loose!

Connors knocks it into the corner and Denisovich lifts it high and down to the other end for an icing call against Kelowna!

Anchorage takes advantage of the tired Knights players and sends out their top line!

St. Raegan wins the draw, back to Dimmadrome, who SHOOTS

DEFLECTED in front by Carter!

Vilde stops it but the puck is loose!

Carter has it again! Whacks a SHOT!

BLOCKED by Svensson!

Dimmadome SHOOTS!

Misses!

Carter SHOOTS!

Misses again!

The Knights able to clear it out, Anchorage pushes it back in but they are called for Off-sides, the puck had definitely gone out across the blue line!

Armada win the draw, pass it around neatly, setting up Aittokallio for the SHOT

But Vilde is there to make the SAVE, hanging on for a stoppage in play!

Faceoff to the left of Vilde, St. Raegan versus Uriel

It's won by St. Raegan, back to Carter at the top of the circle, he winds and fires a hard SHOT

Goal Goal Goal HE SCOOOOOOORRRRRRESSSSS!!! Goal Goal Goal

Armada strike first and they take a 1-0 lead!

Teams at center ice, now, Kelowna wins the draw and immediately attack!

Savage gathers up a lose puck, and SHOOTS

BLOCKED by Baloo!

Uriel gets it, wrists a weak SHOT

It sails wide!

Maddox on the boards sends a SHOT towards the net!

But Blue is in position and he makes the easy SAVE!

-------------------

SO, Armada able to capitalize on an opportunity, but Kelowna does not back down and comes right back with pressure of their own!

Lots of shots, a goal, some good saves, all in all, an exciting minute indeed!
