Vancouver Whalers 4 Vs. Kelowna Knights 1
Themes of the Game:

Score First? Doesn't Matter

The Kelowna Knights scored first very early into the game (roughly 2 minutes in) however that did not take away enough gas from the Vancouver Whalers. The Whalers responded with 3 goals in roughly 3 minutes in the middle of the first period in order to truly gain the momentum from the game. They ended up scoring one more time in the Third Period in order to put the game out of reach.

Greg Santos, Have a Day!
Greg Santos stood on his head and spun around during the game for the Vancouver Whalers. He ended the game with 27 saves on 28 shots and was a major reason as to why the Whalers won. After allowing the first goal of the game he insured that he would not give up a second one and eventually allowed his team to gain the confidence to attack on the other end of the ice.

My 3 Stars of the game and the explanations

3rd star: Benis Smol

Benis played a good game with 1 point and +/- stat of +2 (Best on Vancuvers team) Benis gave a beutiful pass to Buck Maverick that opened up the chance to make goal. Benis made similar passes through out the game and really shined in the game!

2nd star: Eriks Skalbergs

The Man who lead Vancouver to Victory. 2 Goals that humiliated Kelowna. Eriks in total shooted 7 shots in the game. 2 went in. I call that skill! Eriks have been training hard this season and this really shows the results!

1st star: Greg Santos

Greg really kept Vancouver together. He was in my opinion at his best in this game! He really made some incredible saves that kept Vancouver in the winning position

Week Two.  Game Twenty-Eight. Kelowna Knights Knights  versus Vancouver Whalers Whalers

Analysis of the First Star:  Erik Skalbergs  Whalers

With an impressive 7 shots fired throughout the game, the first star Erik Skalbergs made two of them count by hitting the back of the net and leading Vancouver to an impressive 4-1 victory.

His first goal was a high-light reel achievement when a tic-Tak-toe play starting with a face-off win by Benis Smol in Kelowna's end led to the game tying goal.  Tokek Takshak picked the Kelowna defenseman with a beautiful swivel manoeuvre, passed it quickly off the stick of Jean-Luc Picard who with a glassy smoothness, put it right on the stick of Skalbergs who blasted it home.

His second goal was much of an insurance goal, with Vancouver already leading 3-1 at the time, but it was impressive nonetheless. Soren Kierkegaard dropped a monster hit to loosen the puck and Benis Smol was right behind him to snatch the puck up.  He tapped it quickly to Buck Maverick who heroically passed it to Skalbergs to give him the chance to score his second of the night.  He did not let the team down, scoring easily.

Great job Erik!

Defensive Forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

Today was a one way tilt between the Whalers and the Knights, with Vancouver routing Kelowna 4-1. Though the Whalers were firing on all cylinders, our defensive forward of the game is the Whaler's first line winger Herb Robert. Herb had an impressive 1 hit and 1 shot block and spent 2 minutes and 5 seconds on the penalty kill, the most of any Whaler forward. Through 22:14 minutes of gametime, Roberts was not scored on during the gamer and ended the game as a 0 rating. Though their line didnt score, they were imperative in keeping the knights to one goal.

SSPN Missed Opportunity of the Game

Peter Walker can't buy a faceoff win

This week's SSPN Missed Opportunity of the Game doesn't focus on a single moment--instead, we're going to look at a single player across the game.  Kelowna had a rough time breaking into the offensive zone in this game, and there's a clear culprit.  Peter Walker stood up at the dot and got blanked in this game.  Posting a paltry 13 faceoff wins on 33 faceoffs, his FO% didn't even break 40% in this game.  Unfortunately for Walker, puck possession is a huge part of beating a tough opponent, and the Knights paid for it dearly.  With 48 faceoff wins, Vancouver simply had more time to get into the zone and put shots on net.  And at the end of the day, that's what matters.

As we always say...

He's gotta want that one back!

Cheers Bitter Beer Award of the Game Cheers

Kevin Maddox Knights (-1, 4 PIMs)
A game controlled all night long by Vancouver, the only applicable player could be from Kelowna. Maddox had a miserable game as a top pairing defenseman showing little signs of discipline taking two very untimely penalties. While the second penalty was an offsetting spat in the second, the first penalty directly led to Kristaps Ball slipping a wrister through a screen to give the Whalers a 2-1 lead that would only grow. A player of his caliber can't get sucked in to to undisciplined hockey if Kelowna wishes to be competitive night after night.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

This was a tough game for Kelowna - one of the rare multi-goal losses of their season so far. The bust of this game is definitely Daddy mack. His performance just wasn't enough to tilt the scales in favor of his Knights. With a whopping twenty two minutes of ice time, mack couldn't string together a productive shift to save his life. Posting a -1 with 2 shots on net had many yearning for more out of this superstar-to-be. The bright side to this performance, is the fact that his team currently sits in position to make a run for the finals this season. With enough guidance, and some rest, Daddy mack should be able to improve his game in time for the playoffs, where he should make a huge splash.

Punching Bag Of The Game
Ryan Gardiner

Ryan Gardiner got rocked a whopping 4 times this game, lost the puck three of those times, and was beat up several different players. Not sure what Gardiner did to get on their bad side, but it's obvious to this reporter that Gardiner had a target on his back. It'll be interesting to see if Gardiner gets the same knock-down, drag-out treatment the next time these two teams play. No word on any injuries to come out of the game. Gardiner didn’t miss a shift, but was largely ineffective after a huge hit in the third period.

The battle of BC was less penalty filled and less even then it has historically been in the past. These two bitter rivals battled, but Vancouver was all over Kelowna, taking them down by a score of 4-1. After a quick start by Kelowna (scoring only 2:38 in to the game) the rest was dominated by their provincial rivals. Just about 7 minutes later Eriks Skalbergs tied it, the first of four consecutive goals by the team. Greg Santos played a very strong game, saving 27 of 28 shots and not allowing Vancouver to get any life back in their game. For two teams at 7-1, the crowd definitely expected a closer game, but half of them left very disappointed in the show on the ice.

Beatdown of the Week

Vancouver were firing on all pistons in this game. Cash Savage gave Kelowna an early lead but also their only goal of them game. Vancouver scored three goals in three minutes midway througj the first hitting the Knights with a big bag of "what the f$!@." Another supurb performance by Greg Santos as he mamaged to save 27 of 28 shots. Kelowna were unable to capitalize on their power plays and their penalty kill unit gave up one goal. Kelowna looked off all game and after those three back to back goals, they were donw after the first period. The defeng champions did not look like themselves here.

Welcome to the 4th edition of Shot Blocker of the Game! Tonight's winner is Jean-Luc Picard of the Vancouver Whalers!

Vancouver dominated this game and a big reason for that was the man with a mission Jean-Luc Picard. The Whalers defenseman gave up his body to keep the puck away from his goalie putting in 5 shots blocked in this one, tying the record for shots blocked by the winner of this award. Picard was on fire keeping the puck from coming at good angles on the Whalers goalie. It wasn't all good for Picard however as he blocked a shot at an unfortunate angle that likely could have been handled easily by the goalie with no rebound, the puck squirted back out to a Knights player who kept the cycle going until they Knights potted their first and only goal of the game as we finally have a winning player awarded Shot Blocker of the Game!

Blues' Goon of the Game

In a matchup between two of the top teams in the league, will we be able to find a Goon of the Game? You bet your ass we will. Our Goon of the Game in this goliath game is our boy, Kevin Maddox! Mad Mog Maddox picked up a couple of minor penalties, and came out of this game with a big ol’ minus one on the scoresheet. A managed a shot, a hit, and a blocked shot, which indicates that he was playing his part everywhere on the ice and grinding for his team. Out there for 20 minutes on the ice as well? Now that’s definitely Goon of the Game material.

Pivonka's Pick

When the Knights take on the Whalers there's only one thing you can focus on and that's the goaltending battle and surprise surprise the big bad Greg Santos came out on top once again! Santos held the Knights to just one goal on 28 shots on net turning in a remarkable performance capped off with a beautiful .964 save percentage. Santos' seventh win of the season seemed like an easy night for the big man as he carried his team to victory over Kelowna. If Santos can continue this type of play going forward, then Vancouver is going to be the team to beat this year - but it all starts in net.
