raiders Halifax Raiders vs St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows
Day 15 Game 34

Hello hockey fans, the United States and Newfoundland. Tonight we bring to you a recap of two teams facing very different starts to their seasons.  The Halifax Raiders are off to a surprising start with a record of 5-3-0 coming into tonight’s game. Their opponents the St. Louis Scarecrows are off to a rather disappointing start with a 1-6-0 record. Halifax are the favourites after a dominating performance and shutting St. Louis out last game. St. Louis will need to come out playing if they want any hope at salvaging this early season and putting themselves into playoff contention.

Period 1

The opening period St. Louis is dominating, they come out flying directing shot after shot towards Geezus Kryst. Face off in the Scarecrows end sees the Raiders win the initial draw but, Quinn Cullen is bodied by Rowdy Smithers. The play chases down the other end, Daniel Karlsson with the puck passes to Nicholas Williams, he takes the shot and buries it!

Nicholas Williams 3 (Daniel Karlsson 2, Rowdy Smithers 4) at 2:29

The remainder of the first is a pretty even affair as the 1st draws to an end. An errant pass by Gordie Maple is intercepted by PLD sending Leshaun King streaking up the ice. King with the dish to Quinn Cullen as he takes a stride before burying the shot. We have a tie game!

Quinn Cullen 3 (Leshaun King 2, Pierre Laroche-Durocher 4) at 18:55

With the first period coming to a close we have both teams locked at 1-1, shots are 7 for Halifax and 8 for St. Louis. Halifax is 0/2 on the PP with St. Louis 2/2 on the PK.

Period 2

The second period another low scoring affair. Both teams aren’t able to muster up much offence. We see poor shot attempts being taken by both teams as they fail to convert on any of their chances. The game starts to open up though, we see both teams become undisciplined with two penalties each. The intensity ramps up as both teams search for that go ahead goal. The physicality is on full display in the 2nd as both of these teams are battling hard. Hit after hit, these opponents are trying to wear each other down. St. Louis will not break, with only 3 shots they’re looking frustrated they are bending at the moment but holding on. St. Louis manages to claw their way out of the second being outshot 5-3 and outhit 7 to 4. Both teams are 2/2 on the PK as they head to the locker room.

Period 3

Halifax putting on the pressure in the opening minute takes another undisciplined penalty. St. Louis putting everything towards the net. Halifax fights back with a good PK, PLD limping on the ice after a tough shot block he is stuck on the ice and can’t get off, another shot comes in PLD AGAIN blocking it, he crumbles to the ice as his left leg looks dead. St. Louis is swarming.. they pick up the loose puck, Lil Manius lets off a quick wrister, it finds the back of the net! St. Louis with the go ahead goal for the second time of the night.

Lil Manius 2 (Steven Moyer 3, Adam Taylor 2) at 2:50

Midway through the third Halifax looking to tie the game, Vince Rieper with the shot wide but it bounces of the back boards, Kyle Corbett is there to bury the puck in the net tying the game!

Kyle Corbett 2 (Vince Rieper 2, Tylor Schofield 2) at 12:23

Minutes later, Halifax ices the puck. St. Louis wins the ensuing draw and holds onto the puck. The shots directed at the net are nothing dangerous, Lil Manius deflects Steven Moyers shot. It goes wide but Manius is determined and retrieves the loose puck squaring it up and rifles it home!

Lil Manius 3 (Steven Moyer 4, Daniel Karlsson 3) at 14:21

St. Louis retakes the lead for the third time tonight showing no quit. Halifax pushing hard to tie the game, another careless penalty sees Halifax go a man down and their chances at tying the game all but vanish. St. Louis gets revenge after their 2-0 defeat to Halifax and earning themselves their second win of the season.  The shots finish at 14 Halifax and 17 St. Louis.  Both teams go 3/3 on the PK and 0/3 on the PP.

TSN Turning Point: For our TSN turning point we take you to 12:24 of the the third period. Crows were pushing and pushing hard, Raiders were underseige, and yet on their first shot of the period the Raiders scored to tie the game at two's. Crows took a bit hit to their momentum and energy plummeted on the Crows bench. Immediately after the goal Mr. Faceoffs wins the draw and Snipperri Baardownen ices the puck the moment after Faceoffs leaves the ice, some carelessness with the puck the Raiders can't afford. Nickolaj Boyles with the Faceoffs in the Raiders zone but they turn over the puck to Leshaun King, who again ices the puck. Back to back icings and the Raiders have a tired group on the ice. Goku comes on fresh, beats a tired Crush Cile in the faceoff circle, back to Jack Daniels, SHOOTS! Wide! Moyer scopes up the puck, SHOOT! Deflected by Manius! Wide! Manius gets his own rebound and makes no mistake to take the lead. A couple of costly icings sink the Raiders in the third.

Smashed em bro!

In the great words of Peter Laviolette, pound the fuckin body! Each week we pick a game and choose the top three hits for your viewing pleasure.

Our third favourite hit comes at 11:13 in the first period. Rookie winger Adam Taylor receives the puck in the neutral zone looks up and drives to the outside as he crosses the blue line. Rolly Rollerson has other ideas though and takes him to the boards with a nice hip check.

Coming in at number two there is some payback for St. Louis at 3:57 in the third. Rolly Rollerson miscontrolled a pass at the blue line and while trying to keep it in the zone gets absolutely hammered by Nick Pedersen Jr.

Finally and our top body bang of the week goes to Nicholas Falk who was a wrecking ball all over the ice tonight. With just under a minute and a half left to go in the second period Hans Gruber received a pass deep inside his own zone. He doesn't even get time to get his head up before he gets destroyed by Falk.

That's all for this week. Tune in next week for more bone crushing impact and don't forget to go out there and Smash em bro!

All I have to say about Game 34 Halifax Raiders vs St. Louis Scarecrows, is what a night for Lil’ Manius and it was about time for that bum. Heading it to the game the St. Louis Scarecrows were just one and five, hardly a great way to start the season. While the Halifax Raiders record was five and three heading into the game. He crows jumped out to the early lead thanks to Nicholas Williams. Halifax’s Quinn Cullen matched this goal and then thing went quite on the scoring front until third period. That is the Crow took the lead behind a goal from Lil’ Manius. Although that lead was short due to goals scoring prowess of Kyle Corbett. Thankfully this lead was also short lived as Lil’ Manius scored again and the Crow were able to get there second win of the season.

We're back now for Harvey's Fail of the game

This time, we look at a poor fan, and a kid at that. Little Timmy was very excited to see his first ever SMJHL game and thought he was very lucky that his father found rinkside tickets for both of them, to be so close to the action. As it turned out, being so close turned unlucky for little Timmy when Pierre Laroche-Durocher laid a huge hit on Goku Muerto in the third period, right on the board where little Timmy was cheering. Little Timmy wasn't severly hurt, however, and Laroche-Durocher is set to met with him tomorrow to apologize and sign some autographs.

SPECIAL TEAMS REPORT

Tonight we look at game 34, St. Louis Scarecrows vs Halifax Raiders

First Period
-Nicky Pedersen Jr is the first to go for Hooking at 3:50. Halifax's power play comes out strong and records 2 shots on net, both of which are stopped by Friedrich Schmidt.
-Milo Momoka is called for a cross-check at 19:57, the Scarecrows find themselves down man once again. This late in the period, Momoka should have restrained and backed off, but proceeded to hit the numbers. While this PK starts in the first and ends in the second, no shots were generated thanks to St. Louis PK unit.

First Period ends in a 1-1 Tie.

Second Period
-St. Louis and Halifax might have a highlight reel penalty on their hands. Both Helmuts Akmenlauks and Mr. Faceoffs decided to hook each other, at least by the ref's opinion. The crowd seen it is a hook battle, as each player paid their dues to Tim "Dr Hook" McCraken. When the ref's finally separated the two, the fans of both teams were on their feet screaming! It is still a mystery as to why it was only a minor penalty to both. With 4 on 4 hockey underway, both teams would produce a shot.
-Richard Metcalf Jr would be called for tripping at 8:05. St. Louis would finally get their chance on the PP. Halifax's PK would not let up on their attack and forced the Crows to ice the puck 3 times.
-Lil Manius is called for Cross-Checking at 12:40. Much like his teammate earlier, Manius would aim for the numbers and serve time in the sin bin. Halifax would produce 2 shots on net, saved by Schmidt both times.

Second Period ends in a 1-1 Tie.

Third Period
-Halifax would find themselves going down a man early when Quinn Cullen gets called for tripping at 0:33. The Crow's PP unit, embarrassed by the last attempt, would go to record 8 shots. None would make it passed Raiders' goalie Geezus Kryyst.
-Near the end of the period with his team trailing, Kyle Corbett would be called for holding at 17:41. Halifax's PK unit would hold St Louis to 1 shot on this attempt.

St. Louis would go on to win 3-2 in regulation.

St. Louis Scarecrows  PP 0/3 (0%)  PK  3/3 (100%)
Halifax Raiders            PP 0/3 (0%)  PK 3/3 (100%)

Halifax's PK unit showed they could continue to be offensive while down a man, but would not produce in any attempt on the PK or PP. St. Louis PP was weaker in the beginning, but by the end had a fire lit under them, but was too late to generate the opportunities needed to score. Highlight of the match would be the hook battle that even Captain Hook would shy away from.

Today's Barstool Player of the Game is Lil Manius of the St. Louis Scarecrows. Manius scored a goal just 2:50 into the 3rd period to put the scarecrows up 2-1. After Halifax tied it up at 2, Manius let another one rip and slipped it by the opposing goaltender Kryyst to put the St. Louis up 3-2 with 10:10 left in the game. With 2 goals, both being significant with one being a game tier and the other being a game winner, being credited to Manius and a +2 rating it was easy to see why Lil Manius was chosen as the Barstool Player of the Game.

With that said let's take a look at today's Barstool Rookie of the game. Nicholas Williams a former 6th round pick in this past years SMJHL entry draft opened up the scoring just 2:29 into the first period. One shot, one goal. Not bad for a rookie. This game would have been much different without Manius and Williams, and in the end without these two players in the game, it's hard to see St. Louis coming out on top tonight.

St. Louis Stuns Raiders

In a thrilling game coming with a ping-pong battle of score, the St. Louis Scarecrows have come out on top of the Halifax Raiders to earn their second win. Lil Manius brought forth his best game of the season and scored two goals for the Scarecrows. When asked about his performance, he told us to start to expect that out of him, and guarantees that this is the turning point in the season for the Scarecrows.

While they were good a man short and even strength, St Louis showed that their powerplay still needs work. They went 0/3, but luckily Halifax was just as poor with the man up. The coach emphasized this after the game while adding that the powerplay team will be getting a bag skate on their next off day.

Friedrich Schmidt gets the credit for the win, coming off a good helping effort by the St Louis defense limiting Halifax to just 14 shots. The goalie attributes the win to the new-aged warm-up he did before the game involving his chakra crystals and a dark storage room in the arena.

Welcome back to our player of the game segment! Tonight we'll reviewing our pick for player of the game for last nights match between the Halifax Raiders and St. Louis Scarecrows.

Our player of the game tonight is Lil Manius of the Scarecrows! He played an outstanding game tonight with the game winning goal, as well as 2 goals in just 3 shots! His first goal came quite early in the third period after a shot block by Pierre Laroche-Durocher to break the tie bringing the game to 2-1 in favor of the Scarecrows.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Every time you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Halifax Raiders: 33 wins on 62 faceoff taken ( 53,2%)
St. Louis Scarecrows: 29 wins on 62 faceoff taken (46,8%)

Extremely close game in the faceoffs circle here. Quite a good advantage for the Raiders.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: St. Louis Scarecrows' center Goku Muerto with 12 wins on 19 faceoff taken (63,2%)
Loser: St. Louis Scarecrows' center Steven Moyer with 1 win on 10 faceoff taken (10,0%)

Junior Spotlight: Physical Presence
From tonights game, the player that had the greatest physical presence was Pierre Laroche-Durocher from the Halifax Raiders. He had three hits, and two shots blocked. He was sacrificing his body the entire game, not being afraid to block a shot or throw a hit. One of the major hits of the night came from Pierre in a race for the puck with Nicholas Falk. Falk gets ahead of the Pierre, but hesitates to pick the puck up. This hesitation allows Pierre to get in close and ride Falk into the boards for a monster hit. Later on in the night, Pierre would sacrifice his body to block a shot from the point from Daniel Karlsson. Pierre reads the play, and sidesteps a St. Louis player to block the shot. A minute later, Pierre would again block a shot, this time from Lil Manius.

Game 34: Halifax Raiders vs. St, Louis Scarecrows
raiders 2-3  Scarecrows  Regulation Win

Rookie of the Game: Leshaun King

Tonights Rookie of the Game goes to Halifax's Leushaun King. Leshaun assisted in Halifax's first goal of the game, scored by Quinn Cullen where King got the primary assist. Combine King's point in this game with his 56% in the faceoff dot and it shows King's dominance in this game. I know we've talked about how hard it is to step into success in the dot as a rookie, but this is just another rookie with the talent to step in and make his team better overall, which is all you can really ask for.

The St. Louis Scarecrows are celebrating their win over the Halifax Raiders, only their second W of the season, but not everyone in the arena is happy about the home teams victory. As the teams exited the ice, there were some notable boos from the audience not just from the Raiders fans, but from parts of the hometown crowd as well. Why? Well probably because the fans just witnessed one of the dullest games of this young season with both teams barely getting any pucks on the net. Miraculously we still got to see five goals but for most most the game, the teams tired each other down in a boring slugfest in the neutral zone or along the walls. Not a single period saw one of the teams put ub double-digit shots and the worst of them all was the last one, were we only saw eight shots total - and yet, somehow three of them went into the net. "A total of 31 shots between both teams, are you kidding me? That's much how ONE decent team should be able to put on goal during a game", one angry fan told our reporter after the game. "Especially Halifax disappointed me, I came into this thinking that they were one of the best teams in the league and then they barely got anything going even when they were one goal down and you would've expected them to push for that equalizer."

The St. Louis coach was furious when he saw the game sheet. "SHOOTMAN?? HOW DID SHOOTMAN GET ON THE ICE? I WANTED TO SIT HIM ALL NIGHT AFTER HIS ANTICS LAST NIGHT IN THE HALIFAX HARBOUR. HOW'D HE GET 7 SECONDS ON THE ICE??".

Shootman walked into his coach's office as he heard the commotion.

"Everything okay in here coach?"

"Does everything look okay?? I thought I told you that you weren't even gonna get a sniff of the ice after what you pulled last night!" screamed Coach.

"To be fair it was only the 2nd largest explosion in the history of the harbour" retorted Shootman.

It's safe to say with Shootmans average minutes of 0.5/game he and coach will continue to have a strong relationship.
