PGS Game 34: Halifax vs St. Louis
#16

Week Two.  Game 34.  Halifax Raiders raiders  versus St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows

Analysis of the First Star: Lil Manius Scarecrows

To this day, arguably the steal of the Season 42 SMJHL draft, Lil Manius has continuously proven his worth to the team. This game was no exception.

He played casual-like through the first two periods, patrolling the ice like a shark in the shallows just waiting for an opportunity to present itself.  Early in the third just such an opportunity arose.  Adam Taylor stole the puck at his own blue line and sprinted into the opposition zone.  He left the puck for Steven Moyer who saw Manius streaking down the left side.  He slowed himself down while Manius continued to accelerate and the defence were left looking the wrong way as Manius took the pass and went top shelf to see the red flashers behind the net.

The momentum from his first goal kept him playing hard throughout the third and he was determined not to let another mark in the 'L” column be made. Only a few minutes after Halifax had tied up the game, Manius became a one man wrecking crew.  He and Steven Moyer pounded away at the puck and Moyer let a ripper go.  It was deflected by Manius and the goalie caught a piece of it but he left a big juicy rebound that Manius sniped home to take the lead and eventually would become the game winning goal.

Great job Manius!

Goaltending Review:

Geezus Kryyst (Halifax): Neither goalie in this game played well, but Kryyst played slightly worse tonight and it cost his team. The Raiders keeper made 14 saves, but gave up the winning goal with just over five minutes to play in the third. The goal was a weird shot from an odd angle after a missed shot, but Kryyst got beat on a good play.

Friedrich Schmidt (St. Louis): On a night where Schmidt made 12 saves, you would assume that his team lost, especially against the Raiders. However, that number of saves is a testament to the defensive performance in front of him. Schmidt’s performance was enough to get the win in regulation.

Defensive Forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

A low shooting affair tonight in St. Louis, with the Scarecrows edging out the Raiders 3-2. Eyes looked toward Kristof Kovacs for his defensive play this game. Though he was left pointless this game, his impact was still felt. Kovacs ended the night 12/20 at the faceoff dot leaving him with a 60% win rate for faceoffs. Kristof was able to register a hit during the night and tallied up a minute and thirty minutes of penalty kill time. Despite the loss, Kovacs was able to play the entire game without being scored on and ended the night with a zero rating in +/-

SSPN Missed Opportunity of the Game

0:15, third period:  Quinn Cullen redirects Crush Cile's shot wide

Crush Cile had a rough game.  Zero points, a -1, and only three shots on the scoreboard.  Admittedly his game was consistent, but not in the way you want.  Shot connects with the chest protector, no rebound.  Shot wide.  Shot with no rebound.  Shot wide.  Not what you're looking for as a goalscorer.  Early in the third, Cile had a great shot.  Player in front, screen on the goalie, friendly stick in the way.  Cile rips the shot, Cullen gets a piece of it...

And Cullen deflects it wide off the post.

As we always say...

He's gotta want that one back!

Cheers Bitter Beer Award of the Game Cheers

Kiko Rytmeyr Scarecrows (-2)
In the second pair of defensemen, Rytmeyr struggled up and down the ice. While on the ice for both goals, it was the young defenseman who just couldn't muster the grit to make an impact. Giving up on plays, not going hard into the corners and errant passes plagued him regularly. Rumblings of a possible benching mid-way through the game surfaced in the media room, but no clarifications were made. Understandable as such, look to see Rytmeyr on the ice less if he doesn't raise his level of play.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

Now, St. Louis won this game 3-2, but the Bust of the Game Award is still going to one of their players - Kiko Rytmeyr. Seriously, what was this guy doing this game. 17 minutes of ice time, 3 of which came with the extra man. He posted a very impressive -2, with 0 shots, 0 points, and whole heap of disappointment. For someone hailed as "the next big thing in St. Louis" this was definitely a lackluster performance. Kiko has shown that he is offensively adept, however, if he doesn't find the score sheet, his defensive weaknesses stick out like a sore thumb. Hopefully Rytmeyr can use this game a learning opportunity to turn his game around.

3rd period: 4 saves on 6 shots

Friedrich Schmidt (STL): 12 saves on 14 shots, .857 Save Percentage
1st period: 6 saves on 7 shots

3rd period: 1 save on 2 shots
Goalie grade: D-

Goalie of the Game: Friedrich Schmidt
This was a rough game to watch as a coach, fan, and especially as a goalie. Not many shots from either side meant neither goalie could get into a groove. Schmidt played okay in net, securing the win for his team.

TSN Turning Point

After two and three-quarter periods of going goal for goals with one another. This game's turning point came at the 14:21 mark of the third period with the score tied two-all between the St. Louis Scarecrros and the Halifax Raiders. With the puck in the Raider's end, Steven Moyer fired a puck towards the net. Lil Manius got his stick on the puck, but deflected it wide. Lil Manius was able to track the puck down, put it on net, and put the Scarecrows up 3-2 with his second goal of the game. This instance turned the tide once more, but this time the Raiders would be unable to answer back. Game-winning-goal for Lil Manius and a big two points for his squad.
