 raiders  3 - 2  Falcons

Hello hockey fans! Tonight, we'll be reviewing the recent matchup between the Halifax Raiders and the Detroit Falcons. It was the first meeting of the season between these two teams, and it was one to be remembered. The Falcons started the season 1-1 with a close loss against Anchorage the first game of their season. This was the only the Raiders second game of the season, just coming from a win against Vancouver just two days prior.

First Period:
It was a great start for the Falcons as they came out capitalizing on an early turnover by Vince Rieper in the neutral zone leading to a goal by Pingy Pinu just 1:30 into the game.

Pingy Pingu 1 (Papa Huligans 1, Liam Kimmer 1) at 1:30

It was pretty quiet for the remainder of the period up until Kyle Corbett was able to intercept a pass in the neutral zone from Marc Palicka. This followed up with a pass over to Aiden Elswick who fed Oliver Kovacs the puck leading to Kovacs scoring the first goal of the game for Halifax with only 1:40 left in the period.

Second Period:
Coming into the second period, Halifax was able to build on the momentum of their late goal last period with another just 1:40 into the period. Oliver Kovacs received an excellent pass from Maximilian Egger. Oliver took a shot from the top of the face-off circle which was deflected into the net by his brother Kristof Kovacs.

Third Period:
It was a pretty cautious start of the third for both teams until Kyle Corbett gave up a turnover in the defensive zone over to Wolfhard Richter. Richter completed a pass over to Lightning Jones who took a shot from the point giving Marc Palicka a chance for a deflection goal he certainly capitalized on. It was a stalemate for the remainder of the period bringing the game to overtime.

Marc Palicka 2 (Lightning Jones 1, Wolfhard Richter 2) at 6:35

OT:
Nothing too much to report on in overtime. Both teams were very conservative not taking many chances. There were a few turnovers by both teams but both unable to capitalize on any of them.

Shootout:
Snipperri Baardownen was the first to come out for the Raiders in the shootout. He had some fancy moves but Cedric Robinson stood on his head keeping the puck out of the net. Kyle Keenan Jr. was the first to come out for the Falcons, Geezus Kryyst made an incredible glove save stopping the Falcons from scoring first. Next out was Crush Cile for the Raiders who was able to score five-hole on Robinson.

With some pressure on his shoulders Lightning Jones was next up for the Falcons. With an unexpected slap shot just feet away from Kryyst, he was get one past him tying the shootout 1-1.

Following the goal from Jones, there wouldn’t be another for quite some time. 12 shooters later and Tylor Schofield tried something nobody thought would happen this late in a shootout. He moved in fast on Robinson and was able to successfully pull off a spinorama just inches away to break the tie.

With the game on the line, David Fantobens was up for the Falcons to keep things rolling. Fantobens moved in slowly and attempted to go five-hole on Kryyst but was unsuccessful.

SPECIAL TEAMS REPORT

Today on the Special Teams Report, we take a look at Halifax Raiders and the Detroit Falcons.

First Period
-The first period there was no penalties taken. Both teams played a disciplined game, each scoring once.

Second Period
-First penalty of the game goes to Cedric Robinson, yes you read that right, the goalie from Detroit for Slashing at 6:45. Cedric a half-second before makes a save on Leshaun King, which he followed up with a friendly swing of the stick to the thighs of King. Liam Kimmer would be selected to sit in the box for Robinson.  Halifax's power play unit did not generate one shot on their man advantage, mainly because Detroit's PK unit was keeping the puck in the neutral zone only dumping in when they needed too.
- Just minutes later, Detroit's Justin Siddals gets called for hooking at 10:13. This time, Halifax's PP unit shows up to play. While they shot 4 times, only 2 made it to goalie Robinson.  Although they allowed a few shots, Detroit's PK unit did not stop their aggressive play and continued to clear the puck.
-Pingy Pingu from Detroit gets called for Diving at 17:01. Detroit was up in arms over what they thought was a clear trip on Pingy Pingu, the ref's had a better view. While the stick was close to Pingu's skates, you can clearly see him dive forward over the stick and really try to sell the trip. Once again, Halifax is on the power play. They only produce 1 shot, which was blocked by Robinson, throughout this play.
The game going into the third with a score of 2-1 Halifax.

Third Period
-Halifax's first penalty of the game comes early in the 3rd period when Kyle Corbett is called for hooking at 2:37. What surprised us here is that although they have a strong PK unit, Detroit's PP unit couldn't get it done. Generating no shots really showed how Halifax's PK unit was also strong.
-Richard Metcalf Jr. gets called for Tripping at 9:12 and once again, Detroit is on the power play. Detroit's PP unit cannot produce any offense with the man advantage. That or Halifax's PK unit is just that good. Detroit's unit spent a lot of time in their zone and the neutral zone, even icing the puck once!
-Detroit would be down a man once again when Dank Boija gets called for Holding at 11:28. Halifax's PP unit gets a surge of energy, generating 6 shots on net. Quinn Cullen slaps the puck from the point, in which Robinson blocks but cannot control the rebound, Pierre Laroche-Durocher tries to bury the rebound but once again Robinson is on it but cannot hold onto the puck, finally Kyle Corbett tries to go top shelf with the rebound, Robinson gloves it down and gets the whistle. Robinson was really standing on his head and keeping Detroit in the game. Crush Cile takes a shot which is then deflected wide by Kristof Kovacs. Halifax is unable to score on the man advantage.
-Within seconds of the last penalty sequence, Detroit once again goes down a man. Tobias Vikland gets called for High Sticking at 14:00. Detroit's PK unit returns to form and plays aggressively, Halifax is unable to generate a shot on goal.
The game, tied at 2, would go to overtime and then a shootout where Halifax would finally beat Robinson and win 3-2.

Detroit Falcons   Power Play 0 on 2 attempts (0%)  Penalty Kill 5 on 5 attempts (100%)
Halifax Raiders   Power Play 0 on 5 attempts (0%)  Penalty Kill 2 on 2 attempts (100%)

Halifax's Power Play should have produce on one of those chances. They may need to spend some time on the practice rink running PP drills. Their Penalty Kill unit was absolutely lights out, not allowing a single shot while down a man. Halifax was definitely the more disciplined team.

Detroit's power play could not generate a shot, they need to spend more time running drills as well. While their PK unit did a great job, the showed signs of weakness late in the game when they left Robinson save them.

If Detroit played a more disciplined game and generated anything on the PP, the outcome may have been different. Robinson stood on his head all game. Halifax's Special Teams was overall better on both the Power Play and the Penalty Kill.

PIM Leaders of The Game

Falcons  Pingy Pingu           2 PIM - Diving, could have stayed on the ice but choose to get "tripped"
Falcons Cedric Robinson     2 PIM - Not everyday the goalie gets a Penalty
raiders Richard Metcalf Jr.  2 PIM - An actual Trip

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
We look into what could have ended really badly for Halifax Forward Leshaun King

Goalie penalties are few and far between, when the slashing occurred in the second period of Halifax Raiders vs Detroit Falcons most on-lookers missed that it even happened.
Good think in this day and age we have cameras where we can rewind and look at the situation again.

Lets break the play down:
We are deep in Falcons zone and the Raiders are looking to score.
King is driving in from behind the net without the puck and trying to get into position to deflect a potential shot into the net.
Cedric Robinson, Goaltender for the Falcons seemingly unprovoked decides to swing his stick at the back of King's thighs making him fall to his knees.

This is a very dangerous foul and could have ended really badly for King would the stick hit the correct spot. A player does not have that much protection behind his thighs.
Fortunately for King he's seemingly unaffected by this dirty play and continued for the rest of the game.

Lots of debate is still up if a 2-min penalty really was sever enough punishment, voices from Halifax is calling for suspension of the rookie goaltender.

Three Comments:
We are lucky that Leshaun King (#2 in draft) could skate on and that an injury was not sustained, King is looking to have a great first season and it would be a shame if he missed games.

Cedric Robinson needs to look himself in the mirror long and hard, is this the type of goalie he wants to be known as? We know he's got the talent, does he have the presence of mind tough?

The penalty could have easily been more then a 2-min. I don't think that the Falcon camp would even protest a game misconduct in this case.

Hello everyone and welcome to our first Fail of the Game, brought to you by Harvey's.

Today was an intense game for both the Halifax Raiders and the Detroit Falcons, that went into a long shootout session of nine rounds. Both goaltenders had a lot to say in the matter, with only one goal against apiece going in the ninth round. Our fail comes with the first shot of the sixth round, when Crush Cile helped the Falcons' goali Cedric Robinson by not shooting and falling flat on his butt. See for yourself how the Raider's forward completely loses his edge and goes flying, making it an easy success for Robinson who didn't even have to touch the puck.

Seagull here again with the post-game CHEW report! Today, my fellow Czech brothers and sisters, we are covering game 9 of the SMJHL season with the Halifax Raiders vs Detroit Falcons. I don’t need to tell you folks here at home why to be excited about this one. But for those who are new to our program or from outside the Czech, the Kovacs brothers are members of the budding Raider squad and wonderful Czechoslovakian talent!

I may as well start this report, with my strength; and that is my knowledge on the Kovacs brothers, Oliver and Kristof. This game was played great by both sides however, the Kovacs duo were on fire! First goal for the Raiders coming from Oliver at the start of the 1st in spectacular fashion. This was followed by with the second Raiders goal , first career goal of the season, by Kristof, coming from a deflection on a shot by Oliver. #CHEWonTHAT

The Falcons tie up the game in the third, which leads to the shootout and this is where the hats have to go off to Geezus Kryyst. Luckily for the Raider he pulled off the spectacular win for the boys! Kryyst is one of the few vets on the young team, his experience and composure shone throughout this game. Kryyst came from being the backup on a last place  Raiders team the previous season, with only 18 games played. He has since graduated to the starter and is earning top marks. He currently sits at 2nd the league for wins at about 40% currently over. He will be the driving force, that will steal games for this inexperienced Radiers team, and make them a contender for  a playoff spot.

SMJHL Player of the Game
Oliver Kovacs
Oliver Kovacs was the MVP of this game getting a 1 goal and 1 assist this game. He got the goal in the first period of the game with a beauty of a snipe, that goal also tied it up for the Raiders. his assist came from the second period when his shot got deflected Kristof Kovacs and thus the Halifax Raiders were in the lead. However the Detroit Falcons manged to score in the third and tied it up and the game ended in shootouts and the Raiders won in shootouts. Oliver Kovacs was the SMJHL Player of the Game.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Everytime you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Halifax Raiders: 45 wins on 89 faceoff taken ( 50,6%)
Detroit Falcons: 44 wins on 89 faceoff taken (50,4%)

Extremely close game in the faceoff circle here. No clear advantage for either team.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: Detroit Falcon's center Kyle Keenan Jr. with 20 wins on 32 faceoff taken (62,5%)
Loser: Detroit Falcons' center Mark Palica with 14 wins on 31 faceoff taken (45,2%)

Game 9: Halifax Raiders vs. Detroit Falcons
raiders 3-2  Falcons Shootout Win

Rookie of the Game: Oliver Kovacs

Oliver Kovacs went 8 games remaining pointless, but in this game he scored his first goal, opening up the scoring for Halifax a little over 18 minutes into the game. The goal was assisted by team mates Aiden Elswick and Kyle Corbett giving both of them their first points of the season as well. This wasn't Oliver's only showing in the game however, in the second period he had the primary assist on his brother's first goal. Which had to be memorable for the both of them. Halifax ended up winning the game in the shootout with a goal by Tylor Schofield.

Defensive Forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

A back and forth game today in Detroit ending in a shootout, Halifax's Crush Cile was a force to be reckoned with. Cile lead the Raiders in PK time with Mr. Faceoffs with a total time of 2 minutes and 10 seconds and successfully prevented the Falcons from capitalizing on the man advantage. He came out of the locker room today looking to send a message, and was the highest hitting player on the raiders with a total of 3 hits. Cile would end the game as a +/- 0 through 20 minutes of game time not allowing a goal the entire game. He topped off his impressive defensive performance with a flash of brilliance as he scored one of the only two shootout goals in the Raiders 3-2 victory

Halifax Raiders 3 Vs. Detroit Falcons 2
Themes of The Game

Missed Opportunities:
This seems like the easiest theme to truly roll out here. The Halifax Raiders were gifted five powerplays and they should have converted on at least one of those. Luckily they were able to convert in the shootout... but not until the 9th round of the shootout. Here is where the theme was seen as well, there were countless misses in the shootout and thus it took that long for a team to finally burry the hatchet.

Kovacs Dominate:
The Kovacs (Oliver and Kristof) combined for 3 points and a + 4 rating this game and took home the 1st and 2nd star of the game. They have been a bright spot for the Raiders this season and have been proving that they were worth those early round selections in the SMJHL draft.

SSPN Missed Opportunity of the Game

Shootout round 9:  Robinson tuckers out, loses the puck at a pivotal moment

The final round of a marathon shootout.  Goaltender Cedric Robinson has been lights out all night--.929 SV% and 7 of 8 stops on the shootout.  But he's tired.  You can see it in the way he holds his head, the way he taps the posts.  Robinson has checked out from an exhausting game.  Fourth line winger Tylor Schofield lines up for the shot.  Schofield explodes off the line, goes forehand-backhand, then hits the heel for the spin move.  Robinson bites on the backhand, and gets bit.  Schofield scores!  The ninth-round goal is enough to put Halifax ahead, and Detroit heads home with one point and a broken heart.

As we always say...

He's gotta want that one back!

Comment 1 (word count:179):

THE CRUCIBLE: Analysis of Physical Play

Hit of the Game12:00 of 2nd period - Marc Palicka is hit by Crush Cile.

On paper, this play-by-play line does not at all represent the sound that was quite literally felt around the rink, as well as the silence that followed. Palicka had won a faceoff scrum to himself, and had quickly circled back to try and skate the puck out of the Falcons' zone. However, he would be stopped dead in his tracks by a charging Crush Cile, whose shoulder planted itself directly in Palicka's chest before planting him into the ice at the top of the left circle. The noise of the collision sucked the air of of the arena and Palicka's lungs even as play continued. Palicka would lay on the ice for a moment before collecting himself and returning to the bench, while Cile would politely decline a fight "request" from Detroit's Hypolact Asia.

Big Richard's Auto Collision Hitters of the Game:

3. Hypolact Asia, 3 hits
2. Crush Cile, 3 hits
1. Justin Siddals, 4 hits

Missed Opportunities: The Turning Points That Never Happened

In this weekly segment, we explore the moment(s) in this week's featured game where a team or player blew an opportunity to make their mark on the game and either win it or at least turn it in their favour. In this week's game between the Halifax Raiders and Detroit Falcons, the greatest missed opportunity was:

Flacko Dangerfield's flurry of chances:

The Falcons' star winger was a force all night, but couldn't buy a goal to save his life. Over the course of the game, Dangerfield recorded five shots, all of which were at least good chances, with several high-percentage opportunities close to the net. With credit to the Raiders' goaltender, Dangerfield flubbed several of these chances in tight, including one in particular where he failed to raise the puck over the sprawling goalie's glove and into a gaping net. To top it off, Dangerfield was stymied in this game's marathon shootout, which would result in a loss and a frustrating end to a nightmare game for the veteran forward.

3rd comment (word count: 162):

The Shootout: Final Showdown

In this segment, we look at the top moment in tonight's marathon shootout between the Raiders and Falcons. In nine rounds, there was no shortage of excitement, but one moment truly stood out among the rest:

Hypolact Asia's shootout gaffe:

When a shootout goes to the 9th round, it's usually a battle of the goaltenders, and this game was no different. However, the Falcons appeared to have a sure win as defenseman Hypolact Asia skated towards Raiders goalie Geezus Kryyst, who stumbled on his way out to challenge his opponent, leaving Asia a direct line to skate around and deposit the puck into an empty net. However, Asia fumbled the puck, and Kryyst was able to manage a last-ditch effort to poke the puck away with his flailing stick. This was the Falcons' best chance to win, and the fact that the Raiders would win just two rounds later must have left a sour taste in Asia's mouth.

Goaltending performance review:

Geezus Kryyst ( raiders ): Kryyst has been a consistent performer for the Raiders through the first two games of the season. He has shown a consistent ability to get saves when the Raiders need them and he has to inspire confidence for the team when he hits the ice each game. With regards to this game, you can’t ignore his performance in the shootout. In a nine round shootout, Kryyst gave up just one goal after making 21 saves on 23 shots during regulation. His performance was fantastic.

Cedric Robinson ( Falcons ): Despite his team falling in the shootout, Robinson can leave the ice with his head held high. Standing tall with 26 saves on 28 shots, as well as making seven saves in the shootout, Robinson was a big reason that his team was able to earn a point against the Raiders. While he did take a penalty in the second period, it didn’t come back to hurt his team and his performance is one that has to have the Falcons faithful feeling optimistic for the rest of the season.

Cheers Bitter Beer Award of the Game Cheers

Tig Murphy Falcons (-2, 22:07 played)
Hard to actually give this award to Tig when he spent 4:30 on the ice fighting off power plays. Regardless, a goal against is a goal against and he had two. The Falcons lost in a shootout, but with Murphy's lack of physicality some may wonder if he has what it takes to play the role he does. While just a speed bump in the early season, look for Murphy to steadily raise his level of play in hopes to find more wins for his team.
