Game 3 Vancouver vs St. Louis
#16

Vancouver Whalers 4 - St. Louis Scarecrows 3
Themes of The Game:

Penalties!:
The St. Louis Scarecrows ended up losing the game and one could easily point to their lack of discipline throughout the game. They ended up in the penalty box six times prior to the shootout and the Vancouver Whalers were able to convert once. That one goal allowed the game to go to shootout and definitely came back to haunt the Scarecrows.

Nicholas Williams:
Well playing time clearly did not matter for Nicholas Williams. Despite his seven minutes on the ice he produced two points and ended the game with a + 2 rating. Clearly had a positive effect on the game and his presence was a theme noticed throughout the game.

Week One.  Game Three.  Vancouver Whalers Whalers  versus St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows

Analysis of the First Star: Nicholas Williams Scarecrows

Vancouver won this one in a shoot-out following a hard fought battle between the two teams through three periods and a go at over-time.  Despite the loss, St. Louis' Nicholas Williams takes the first star with an impressive two points.

His goal came at 16:42 of the second period. Goku Muerto initially lost the face-off but some scrappy checking by his team-mates Gordie Maple and Edgars Skalde freed up the puck for Williams to poke it in and tie the game.

He also assisted the goal that tied the game up again in the third period.  The Vancouver goalie left a big fat rebound after a tough shot and Williams scooped it up and passed it on for Jack Daniels to score a sweet, sweet goal that kept them in the game.

Great job Nicholas!

The Tale of the Tape for tonight's fight between Nikolaj Boyle and Guts O'Bigbers looks pretty dull.  Sometimes what's written on paper is what happens in reality, as this fight was a snoooooozefest.  No clear winner comes out as both players look pretty sluggish in the fight.  Boyle draws the instigator minor and gets ejected, but he's gotta wish he got the win the fight too.  Outweighing O'Bigbers by 45 pounds and towering over with a 5 inch reach advantage, Nikolaj Boyle has sent a message to the SMJHL:  He is nothing to fear when the gloves are off.

Cheers Bitter Beer Award of the Game Cheers

Nikolaj Boyle Scarecrows (-1, Game Misconduct)
You are a 2nd line center. In a critical moment of the game, you definitely don't need to be fighting. Most importantly, you definitely don't need to be taking an instigating and a game misconduct. This very well could've been the turning point had it not been for his teammates and linemates picking it up a few minutes later. You have to hold yourself accountable in the key moments, which Boyle clearly has a couple things to work on in the coming weeks of the season if he wants to see STL climb.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

This is a tough one to hand out. Both teams played valiantly, but Vancouver came up short. Our bust of the game award goes to - Tokek Takshak. With almost 26 minutes TOI, 5 of which were on the power play, Tokek failed to notch a point. While he managed 6 shots, none found twine in a game that was decided by a single tally. It's tough to put the blame on a single person in a hard-fought game like this, but someone has to take the fall. The light at the end of the tunnel is the fact that this game was early in the season and training should help convert those shots to goals in the future.

Player of the game analysis

It's rare that you see a player only get 7 minutes of ice time and come out with the first star of the night. Tonight we got treated to that with a stellar performance by Nicholas Williams. Why the coach didn't toss him out there for more minutes as the game went on this reporter will never know. Williams came out with two points, a goal and a helper and a shot and a hit. Efficient minutes for the guy. While he couldn't be effective in his 1 attempt at the faceoff dot, he was able to keep his defensive play strong and stop the other team from scoring while he was on the ice. He definitely seemed like he was everywhere tonight.

Goalie breakdown -
Greg Santos: 28 saves on 31 shots, .903 S%
Santos started out with a solid first period, stopping a mere 7 Scarecrow shots but not giving them much net to look at. His rebound control was excellent as only one of the shots rebounded after a save. The second period left much to be desired as Santos let in 2 out of 13 shots, not a pretty number. The Scarecrows definitely turned on the attack to try and turn the momentum, and succeeded, tying the game and ending the shutout. The third period helped gain Santos's confidence back, as he stopped 9 out of 10 shots he faced, and keeping the game tied through the end of regulation. Overtime saw barely any action from either team, and Santos stopped 1 of 1 shot. The shootout is where Santos got very lucky, as he stopped one shooter, and 2 missed the net. Overall a solid performance by Santos and a well-earned win.

Friedrich Schmidt: 33 saves on 36 shots, .917 S%
Schmidt had a busier night for sure, but put the Crows in a hole early by giving up 2 goals on 18 shots. The Whalers hammered shot after shot and found success in that strategy, but Schmidt can't be blamed for being peppered in the first frame. The second period helped turn the tide of the game as Schmidt stopped all 8 Vancouver shots, and his team potted 2 goals to tie it up. His third period was average, letting in the first goal of the period. Luckily the Crows tied it late in regulation, but were not able to keep the momentum in overtime, each team getting one shot a piece. Schmidt was on a roll in the shootout, stopped the first two shots while his teammates missed at the other end. Unfortunately he was the one to let in a goal first, losing his hard work in the shootout. A respectable performance by Schmidt but a tough loss for the Scarecrow squad.

Game of the Day

Vancouver and St. Louis had a hell of a game in their season opener. This was a back amd forth fight that overtime couldn't even decide. Vancouver drew first blood and really did a number on Schmidt in the first period with 18 shots. He saved all but two, one of those being on a power play. St. Louis played a very flat game in the first period. They looked cometely different in the second period outshooting Vancouver 13-10 and managed to tie it up. Kastrba put the Whalers in front midway through the third but Scarecrow Daniels answered back a few minutes later. A shootout decided this one as Santos beat Daniels on the last penalty shot. Impressive performance by both teams.

Welcome back to Shot Blocker of the Game! Tonight's Shot Blocker of the Game is Gordie Maple of the St. Louis Scarecrows!

For the 2nd straight game the winner of this award comes from the losing team and this time it wasn't pretty. Neither team seemed to show the heart needed to keep the puck out of the net with their body. Gordie was the only one who even had 2 shots blocked in this game. We would normally take a closer look at his blocks and how they effected a game but if I am being honest this is a game where no one should have won this award. Even the goalies were sub par in their shot blocking for this game so I couldn't even cheese my way out of giving this award.

Blues' Goon of the Game

Our Goon of the Game for this matchup between the Vancouver Whalers and St. Louis Scarecrows is none other than Nikolaj Boyle. About half way through the last frame, Boyle squared up with the aptly named Guts O’Bigbers, and the two fought to a well earned draw. Boyle also picked up the instigator on that fight, earning him the 5 minute major and the 10 minute misconduct. Fully embracing the goon role in this matchup, Boyle came out with a solid minus one, and actually quiet surprisingly, no hits. He managed to get a single shot off and win exactly half of the faceoffs he took, with the 9/18 figure.

Pivonka's Pick

Just enough time to focus on one player in tonight's game and that player is Vancouver's Soren Kierkegaard. Finishing the game as a minus one with an absolutely embarrassing two for twelve in the face off circle. Now Vancouver ended up winning the game but just as easily could have lost with the way Soren played. His costly high sticking penalty in the first period killed any chance to build on their opening goal that came just two minutes earlier. For playing only less than ten minutes, Soren's play was an anchor holding the team back and nearly cost the team their win. Vancouver cannot allow Soren to continue to play so poorly.

*** THE MOST EXCITING MINUTE OF THE GAME ***

(For my PGS Analyses, I will find the 1-minute stretch of the game which I deemed to be the most exciting, and give a play by play thereof

10:00 -> 11:00 of the 1st period

10 minutes into the first period, Vancouver with a 1-0 lead and they are on the prowl again as they venture into the St. Louis zone, Smols has the puck down the right side, he cuts to the inside, unloads a hard SHOT!

And Schmidt with the gloves save and he will hold on for a whistle!

The teams change lines, with the Whalers sending out their top line to face off against the Crows' 2nd line. Andani versus Boyle at the dot, it's Andani winning it cleanly back to Ball - Ball hammers a SHOT

Bit it goes wide!

Andani jumps on it, turns and dishes a pass to Takshak, who slides it across to Picard, down low to Robert, who SHOOTS

And another save by Schmidt, who smothers the puck while the players jostle in front of the net!

The Whalers make a quick change and send out the 2nd line, led by Smols. SMols wins the draw against Boyle and Vancouver with possession. Skalbergs has the puck, his SHOT misses the net! Kastrba retrives it off the back boards and tries to stuff it home but Schmidt has the pads down and keeps it out! Another whistle as he freezes the puck!

Vancouver changes lines again, back with the first unit - Crows stay pat with the 2nd line. Boyle waved out of the faceoff circle and Pedersen in to take the draw. Andani wins it and Cancouver continues to apply pressure. Swinging the puck around with ease, Andani back and forth with Robert, over to Picard, back to Andani, the SHOT

goes wide!

Takshak stops the puck before it can ring out the zone, sends a floater on net!

But Schmidt sees through the screen and snags it with his glove and yet another faceoff in STL zone!

Both teams change lines again, VAN's 2nd line versus STL 3rd line. St. Louis finally wins a draw and they look to break out!

Maple passes to Williams in the neutral zone, but Williams' pass is intercepted!

But Moore' attempt at a stretch pass goes too far and is called back for icing!

Smols ejected from the faceoff circle, Kastrba comes in, but Moyer wins the draw! To Manius! He loses the puck!

And once again Vancouver is unable to control the puck and it is sent down for another icing!

-------------

So! Three saves by Scmidt on 3 shots by VAN, 5 faceoffs in both ends, 2 ejections, 6 line changes ... all in all, an exciting minute of play!
