There is something wrong with him... (Part 1)
#1

12th of January, 2002, Lillehammer

- We have to do something with him.
- I've ran out of ideas. There's no medicine, no one has told us anything that could help. I'm afraid, Marie. I'm afraid he'll disappear one day. I want to see him smile, I want to see him excited.
- I know. What's he doing now?
- Watching TV, I think. I put on the sports channel and he seemed to like it.

As they get up and quietly move to the living room, there boy is watching a hockey game, mimicking some of the actions.

- He rarely acts like that.
- Let's go out tomorrow. Rent him a pair of skates, let's see how he likes it.

13th of January, 2002

- Hey, buddy, put on these. Let's go. How are you feeling?
They skate around for a bit, and the little boy seems quite into it.
- I'm floating, Dad! Like on TV!
- Nice! Come on, try it yourself.
Boy stumbles around, yet tries hard to get up and move again. It seems like he starts to get a hang of it, but after a while he feels exhausted.
- Come on, let's go home, buddy. You did great!

Evening, 13th of January, 2002

- It's the first time I've seen him... excited?! I don't even know how to feel about this..
- Don't be so paranoid about this, Henrik. Let's go out again! We found it! This is what we needed. We're going to Oslo tomorrow, let's get him some proper skates.
- I guess. I felt so happy when he said "I'm floating, dad!". He seemed genuine. I only wish I knew what's going through his head..

28th of February, 2004, a kindergarten in Lillehammer

- How is he acting in there, teacher?
- It is.. not so easy. He rarely even spends time with other children. He wants to be alone, we noticed that, but when we asked, if he wants to do something else, he says "I'm fine.". I asked if other kids are good to him, you know, we have quite friendly environment here, but just to make sure I asked him that, but he just replied "I'm fine." He likes to spend a lot of time drawing, but he never shows anything. Does he speak to you about kindergarten at home?
- He doesn't speak often about anything. He probably has a disorder of some sort. We're trying to find a way to deal with it, but it can be tough at times. Anything else worth noting?
- Well, it's not like he's doing bad at all here despite his personality. He seems to be.. very tidy, he likes everything neat.. He does seem to love when everything's in order. He's doing great when it comes to math tasks. He's just so quiet.. We're afraid that something's wrong with him, but he always says that he's fine.. Oh wait, there's one more weird thing. When, uhh, the kids have their free time, he loves to watch television, but he doesn't care about cartoons or kids shows. He seems to love the sports channel..?! It's so strange, it's the only time he seems interested in anything, he loves to watch hockey and tries to mimick the stick movements... Once he asked if we can go skating, but we have never really done that, it can be hard for me and my assistant to handle all these kids on ice at once. He seemed disappointed that we couldn't go..
- Yeah. Sounds about right. Often only thing that makes him energetic is going on ice. He hates summer, because we can't go to the lake. It's very strange, but he started to attend youth hockey trainings and he seems to do quite well there. Please keep in touch with us. He really rarely says anything about kindergarten, so you're essentially our only source of information.
- Okay. Take care.

March 3rd, 2004, ice rink in Lillehammer

Henrik is watching as his son tries to improve his stick movements, the other kids are already leaving for the locker room. The coach approaches Henrik.

- The kid is unique. To be absolutely honest, I don't say that just to praise. I don't even know how to say it, I'm sorry if that offends you, but he's quite weird..
- It's fine.
- .. and it's also a challenge for us to create a more personal approach to his training. In my 25 years of coaching I haven't seen a kid like this. His gamesense for his age is incredible, just as if he would have to watch tons of film like professional athletes do..
- He does that, yes.
- .. and his attitude is incredible. Usually we would make kids like that team leaders and future captains, but.. He talks very rarely.. He listens to instructions and tries to do his best, but he never talks. You know, me and other coaches thought that he's just really shy, but I don't think it's just that. He tries to stay on ice longer not just because he wants to improve, but also because he wants to be alone in the locker room.
- I know. He's been like that his whole life. What about his game?
- You know, for his age he wants to be aggressive. Obviously at this age we just try to make them better skaters before they have some contact game. There's no place for injuries here, they're all very young so we're trying to say that right now he should not try to do hits and all that.. Does he have ny anger issues? We wouldn't want him to become a penalty machine in the future.
Henrik is smiling.
- Uh, no, he's probably the calmest kid I've seen. Hockey is the only thing that makes him passionate. It's strange, but me and my wife have accepted it. Hockey is great for him, so I'm glad he's doing good. Thank you, coach. See you later.
