Detriot Falcons 0 vs Vancouver Whalers 4

It was a good hockey night tonight for Whalers fans everywhere as they Shutout the Falcons. Let's see how this game unfolded in the Whalers favor.

1st Period

In the first minute of play, Noah Nowes of the Whalers got a Hooking minor against them. Falcons did not act against it though and did not score. Shortly after Hippo Passamus got a penalty for Holding 3 Min 46 Sec into the game. Sadly for the Falcons, Tokek Takshak took advantage of the situation and got his 2nd goal of the season. The assists were by Herb Robert and Geoff Moore.

The third penatly of the period came at 11:39 as Justin Siddals of Detiot got charged with high stickly, and the Falcons held it together, not letting the Whalers take advantage of them the second time. Though, the second goal of the night didn't come until the end of the 1st period. At 16:34, Benis Smol slipped it past the goalie, getting the Whalers to 2-0.  He couldn't have done it without the help of Eriks Skalbergs and David Kastrba getting it to the net so Benis could get it past the goaltender.

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
We look into the one Justin Siddals weird tripping penalty

This tripping situation has been discussed over and over on social media, was it a tripping? Does Siddal even touch the Whalers player?

Maybe it's  just the fact that the Falcons got shut out and the season is not going good so far. Fans are frustrated and looking for excuses.
This is in fact just a minor penalty, but its clear Sidall trips the Whalers player intentional or not.

The fact that this situation was the one that was focused on just tells us how bad the focus is in the Falcons camp.

TSN Turning Point: For our TSN turning point rewind you to the very start of the game, where the game started ALL Detroit. 10 seconds in shot by Lagerfield, shot by Kyle Keenan Jr., shot by Lagerfield again, shot by Vlad, shot by Tig and Santos keeps his cool and holds the rebound! Lightning jones comes right back after the next face off and wires another one! ...and Santos comes up big again! Pingu then right after with back to back shots and Santos stones them. Santos really shut the falcons down early to set the tone, allow Vancouver to take a breath and come back the other way for their 4 goal win. An early turning point and an under appreciated one.

In today's game the Detroit Falcons Traveled to Vancouver to face the Whalers, and the Barstool Player of the Game is none other that Eriks Skalbergs of the Vancouver Whalers. Let's take a closer look as to why Eriks was chosen as the award winner. Eriks had an amazing night. Eriks assisted on two goals. The first came with 3:26 left in the first which put Vancouver up 2-0. The second assist was a primary assist that came just 4:11 in the second period to put the Whalers up 3-0. His lone goal came at the 12:32 minute mark of the third period to put Vancouver up 4-0. Overall he put up a stat line of 1-2-3 with a +2 player rating while seeing north of 17 minutes of ice time. After a line like that its hard not to agree why Eriks Skalbergs was named the Barstool Player of the Game.

THE CRUCIBLE: Analysis of Physical Play

Hit of the Game: 7:45 of 2nd period - Buck Maverick is hit by Justin Siddals and loses puck.

After a brief Falcons possession in the Whalers' zone, Vancouver tried to break the puck out and restart their potent attack. As a breakout pass made its way to Whalers defenseman Buck Maverick, he briefly dropped his head to ensure he corralled the bouncing puck before attempting to skate the puck out of the zone along the wall. However, in that brief moment, he had failed to notice Falcons defenseman Justin Siddals pinching towards him, and by the time he looked up, he could only barely brace for impact. Siddals followed through with a punishing hit, dropping Maverick to his backside and keeping the play going in the Whalers' end. Maverick briefly appeared injured due to an awkward collision with the wall, but finished his shift and continued the game with no ill effects.

Missed Opportunities: The Turning Points That Never Happened

In this weekly segment, we explore the moment(s) in this week's featured game where a team or player blew an opportunity to make their mark on the game and either win it or at least turn it in their favour. In this week's game between the Vancouver Whalers and Detroit Falcons, the greatest missed opportunity was:

An early missed powerplay for the Falcons presents a massive "what-if?"

When the Falcons received a powerplay less than a minute into the game, it represented an opportunity to start the game on their terms and take an early lead, or at least generate some momentum. However, they would create almost the exact opposite scenario. They would create almost nothing on this powerplay, managing only a single shot from outside the blueline and fighting the puck the whole way, capping it off by icing the puck late in the man-advantage. Their sluggish start carried over into an undisciplined holding the stick penalty to Hippo Passamus within a minute of the powerplay ending, which Vancouver promptly capitalized on, scoring the first goal of a blowout victory in which they badly outshot the Falcons. It's easy to look back on that early powerplay and wonder if a different result might have changed Detroit's fortunes in the end.

Comment 3 (word count: 229):

Fourth Stars of the Game:

In any game, there are a number of unheralded players whose contributions don't get listed on the scoresheet, or at least not the "sexy" columns. For each team, we have selected one such player whose game tonight won't be talked about as much as others', but was still a big part of their teams' effort.

Detroit: Tig Murphy, D

Known more for his offense than defense, Murphy was kept off the scoresheet this evening. However, it wasn't for a lack of trying. He recorded two shots and had a number of dangerous forays into the Whalers' end of the ice. However, he did shine defensively in this game, showing his effort in improving his play away from the puck. Murphy registered two hits and three shot blocks, as well as effortlessly eating over 21 minutes of icetime with an even +/- rating.

Vancouver: Alex Andani, C

A workmanlike effort for Andani saw him play a total of 21:45 this evening, a high total for a forward in any game. Despite being held off the scoresheet, he contributed at both even strength and on the powerplay with four shots and provided yet another offensive threat for the Falcons to hold off. In addition to that, his usual brand of stalwart defense was on display, topped off by winning 53% of his faceoffs in 32 opportunities.

Week Three.  Game 38.  Detroit Falcons Falcons  versus Vancouver Whalers Whalers

First Star Analysis:  Eriks Skalsbergs Whalers

The Vancouver Whalers, as to be expected skated to easy victory over the Falcons.  While with any shut-out one could argue that the goalie deserves the first star, Vancouver really didn't face all that many shots.

Eriks Skalsbergs took the honours with an impressive showing and a three point game. He made a remarkable pass to Benis Smol in the first and another wonderful play set up for the Herb Roberts goal in the second.  The Whalers had the game firmly by the beluga dick by this point, but Skalsbergs made sure he added one more goal in the third, taking a zinger pass from the Jusser to further embarrass the Falcons.  Easy win, but a fun game if you are a Whalers fan.

Great Job Eriks!

In today's quick recap, we will be talking about Game #38 of the season.

Detroit  Falcons vs Vancouver  Whalers

Both teams enter this one with a bad taste of loss in their mouths and looking for a win.

Key Moments
It is impossible to decide what the key moment for the Falcons was, as they were completely outplayed from the very beginning in this game. The Whalers key moment occurred at 5:06 of the first when Benis Smol scored on the Powerplay. (This would turn out to be all Vancouver needed to win the game.)

Top Star of the Game
Eriks Skalbergs - A great night for Skalbergs, recording a goal and 2 assists.

Falcons  Centre spotlight  Whalers

We're here in week three to take a look at the rookie centres on show. Tonight Vancouver visits Detroit and we'll be reviewing the games of the three promising first year centres on show.

Marc Palicka (1 shot, 1 hit, 6/20 FO, 18:16, 1:18PP, 4:13PK)

Outside of the dota, Palicka had a very respectable night. He racked up the most minutes of any of the rookie centermen and completed 100% of his passes (14) while also making two interceptions to keep the other team honest. He will for sure need to work on his draws though. Primarily started in the defensive zone he won only 3 of 13 face offs. He fared better in both the offensive (2/4) and neutral zones (2/3) though which raises the question of whether he is being properly deployed by team management.

Eero Makinen (1 hit, 8/13 FO, 10:18)

Makinen kept it simple and had a solid game as a result. Completing all sixteen of his passes he made sure that his team retained possession against a very good Whalers team. As well as this he won five of the six draws he took in the defensive end ensuring that he relieved pressure when his team was under the pump and flipped the puck in four times allowing his team to make changes and keep fresh. There wasn't much negative to say about Makinen other than he missed the net with his only shot of the game and was also knocked off the puck once so possibly spending a bit of time in the weight room will help him retain possession.

Carlo Russo (1 shot, 0/0 FO, 10:14)

While he is listed as a center on his player profile Russo is currently being utilised as a winger by the Whalers. As a result he has not been taking any face offs. Russo had a poor game only getting slightly more than ten minutes on the ice and giving away a staggering seven of his ten passes. He was mainly used to dump the puck in to get lines changes going but also made four interceptions to help his team on the back end. After missing two of his three shots Russo clearly needs to work on his shooting and passing accuracy if he is to make the step up to the SHL.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Everytime you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Detroit Falcons: 43 wins on 83 faceoffs taken ( 51,8%)
Vancouver Whalers: 40 wins on 83 faceoffs taken (49,2%)

Close game in the faceoffs circle here. No clear advantage for any team.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: Detroit Falcons' center Kyle Keenan Jr. with 20 wins on 30 faceoff taken (66,6%)
Loser: Detroit Falcons' center Marc Palicka with 6 wins on 20 faceoff taken (30,0%)

We are back for Harvey's Fail of the Game, and this one might very well be our favorite clip of all.

It showcases Detroit's defenseman Justin Siddals. Siddals already had a penalty on his game sheet when Herb Roberts managed to catch him off guard and go around him when entering the Falcons' defensive zone. In a desperate move, Siddals dove to try and poke-check Roberts. He did fail on it, managing only to get called for tripping (the following PP saw Vancouver making it 3-0), but our fail comes when inertia does its work on the diving Siddals and he slides to... actually we don't want to spoil it, just look and see for yourself.

Seagull here yet again ,with the post-game CHEW report! Today, my fellow Czech brothers and sisters, we are covering game 38 of the SMJHL season with the Detroit Falcons vs Vancouver Whalers. A very warranted shut out by the Whalers. They have been  very dominate this whole season with only Kelowna to keep them from 1st in the league.

This game we are going to focus on the super start Eriks Skalbergs. This player has been dominating the league in points and it is no surprise that he is able to do the same in this game. With an impressive 1 goal and 2 assists. Skalbergs is one of the many vets on the Whalers, he is on top line and for good reason. If you look at his results in the league thus far he current sits at the top of the rankings for: Goals, Shots, Right Wingers, and Pts per 20minutes. He is a fantastic player who seems like after this season will be moving on from the SMJHL to the big league, best of luck to you Eriks!

When looking for the unsung hero in the Detroit Falcons vs Vancouver Whalers game 38 match up. You have to look at Detroit’s rooster, as all three stars of the game were Whalers. Granted the Whalers did win the game 4 to 0 so all three stars should be Whalers. Although that does not mean that, no one on the Falcons had a good game. Just look at the performance for Tig Murphy. The first line defenseman was had a plus/minus of zero so no Whaler was able to sneak it by Cedric Robinson when he was on the ice. Mr. Murphy’s game also three shot blocks, two hits, and two shots. The two shots resulted in no points. Although both hits resulted in the in turnovers allowing the Falcons to control the play. For those reasons I am selecting Tig Murphy as the unsung hero on the game.

SSPN Missed Opportunity of the Game

3:46, first period:  Hippo Passamus commits an early infraction, leading to the go-ahead goal

Momentum is a huge part of hockey, and Hippo Passamus committed a cardinal sin against momentum in this game.  Early in the first, on a defensive play, Passamus reaches out and grabs a Whaler stick in a scrum along the boards.  These kind of plays happen quickly and quietly, but the eagle-eyed referee caught it immediately.  These kinds of early penalties can pass by without a thought, but Tokek Takshak collects the puck from a weird bounce off the board and pots the go-ahead for Vancouver.  The walk of shame followed Passamus to the bench and put a gloom over the team as they trudged to a shutout loss.

As we always say...

He's gotta want that one back!

Defensive Forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

The Whalers came out flying in front of their home crowd and routed the Falcons 4-0. Even in a lopsided game such as this one, there are always those forwards who shine defensively. One of those players is Detriot's first line center, Kyle Keenan Jr.. Keenan Jr. displayed a great effort defensively tonight, despite the 4-0 loss. He was able to maintain a 66% win rate at the dot winning 20/30 faceoffs he took part in. He spent 3 minutes and 28 seconds on the penalty kill and registered one shot block. Though it didn't show this game, Kyle's defensive play will pay dividends in the future if he continues the way he plays.

Game 38: Detroit vs. Vancouver
Falcons 0 - 4  Whalers
Rookie of the Game: Tig Murphy

This game must have hurt the Falcon's morale after getting outshot 23 to 36. It was a little difficult to find a rookie that stood out in this game because nobody in Detroit showed up, and Vancouver only has two rookies. However, there was one rookie who stood out as being particularly good and it was rookie defenseman Tig Murphy. You can tell by Murphy's +/- ratio that whenever he was on the ice he was putting all he had having no goals scored on him, and pile on the fact that he still managed to have three shots blocked shows he was on point this game. he also had two shots and two hits. Overall this is actually one of the more dominant rookie performances Ive seen.
