The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

This was a tough one for Detroit, and they didn't really have a chance either. Vancouver wanted it more, and the score shows that. The Bust of the Game Award goes to Detroit's Flacko Lagerfield. His lack of discipline tonight killed any chance of the Falcons making this a close game. With less then a minute left in the second, he took a lazy penalty and killed the momentum his team was building heading into the third. Starting the third a man down, and a few goals down, was too large a hill for Detroit to climb. With twenty minutes of ice time and almost 3 with the extra man, Lagerfield could have made a difference in this game - but he didn't.

Punching Bag Of The Game
Buck Maverick, David Kastrba, Eriks Skalbergs, Kristaps Ball, Kyle Keenan Jr., Soren Kiekegaard

For the first time in the history of the award, we have a six-way tie for Punching Bag Of The Game. Buck Maverick, David Kastrba, Eriks Skalbergs, Kristaps Ball, Kyle Keenan Jr., and Soren Kiekegaard were each hit three times. Bodies were flying around out there. Both teams threw caution to the wind and it was clear that there was a stress on physical play pushed by both coaches before the teams took the ice tonight. If you enjoy physical hockey, pay attention to the next time these two teams play one another, it should be a veritable bloodbath.

Vancouver Whaler's Player of the Game:

This game's, week three / game thirty-eight, player of the game is winger, Eriks Skalbergs.

Eriks Skalbergs racked up two assists, and also tallied one goal. In addition to the young forwards three points, he also skated for nearly twenty minutes of ice time, with almost four of those minutes coming on special teams. The coach is clearly confident in his player in all situations and for good reason.
When asked to walk us through his goal, Eriks Skalbergs modesty shined through: "It was a total scramble play. Our guys battled hard to keep control in their end. I think Jussi and I ran a little give and go; I fired one wide; Davey dug the puck back out and gave it back to me and I just fired it on net.

Falcons can't get off the Ground in match vs. Whalers

The Detroit Falcons were unable to solve Greg Santos tonight who managed to save all 23 of their shots. Their own goalie, Cedric Robinson, managed to put up a valiant fight and save 32 of 36 shots, but unfortunately he was just left out to dry to often and couldn't stop the Whalers from putting the puck past him. Detroit started to get chippy early in the game, and Vancouver made them pay by capitalizing on 2 of their powerplays.

Stellar defensive play out of the Whalers stopped the Falcons from getting in prime scoring territory and shut them out through the game.

Hit of the Night:
The hit of the night comes from the Detroit Falcons's Justin Siddals, who put up five hits while playing defense for Detroit. Five minutes into the first, Siddals would line up Soren Kierkegaard for a huge body check similar to another player for a Detroit based hockey team. Siddals saw Soren had no real option but to try and squee bye, which would not end well for Soren. Soren even tries to dump the puck to prevent the hit, but at that point Siddals is committed to the hit. Soren turns away from the hit, which just makes look even worse as he becomes the meat in a Siddals-Boards sandwich.

Goaltending Review

Cedric Robinson (DET): While it wasn’t a bad performance from the young goalie, he was thoroughly outplayed by veteran Greg Santos. While the Whalers are definitely a better team than the Falcons, Robinson made 32 saves to give his team a chance. He would like to get the goal by Tokek Takshak back, but given that it was a powerplay goal, there is only so much he can do.

Greg Santos (VAN): What a performance from one of the league’s top goalies. While he didn’t face a ton of shots (just 23), you can’t ask for anything more from Santos. A shutout against the plucky Falcons is no joke, and he can be proud of his effort in this one.

Palicka's Players of The Game

The Game was owned by one team, and that one team also had all three stars of the game. Vancouver had an amazing game against Detroit, winning 4-0 on home ice. Erik Skalbergs took the first star, He had a 1-2-3 night on the boxscore including a 100% Faceoff Percentage. Skalbergs also had a +2 plus minus. Goalie Greg Santos had a 100% save percentage on 23 shots as he found the way to his 8th win of the season. Tokek Takshak was on the ice more than any other Whaler, he had a two point night going 1-1-2 and also two shots blocked.

Welcome to the 9th edition of the Shot Blocker of the Game award. Tonight's winner is Geoff Moore of the Vancouver Whalers who blocked 3 shots on the way to a shut out against the Detroit Falcons.

For the highlight of the night we go to Vancouver Whalers radio. To set the tone the Whalers had just take a 4-0 lead and the Falcons were trying to get any sign of life.

"Konstantin with the puck working the Whaler defense. Konstantin with the shot.... pad save by Santos straight out to Keenan Jr. who tries top corner!!! Deflected by Lightning Jones and BLOCKED BY GEOFF MOORE!!! HE GOT HIS STICK IN JUST IN TIME TO TIP IT UP OVER THE NET! HOly Cow what a play by the Whalers defenseman."

Blues' Goon of the Game

In today’s thrashing of the Detroit Falcons via the force that is the Vancouver Whalers, one goon stood above all: none other than Justin Siddals. This guy is an absolute wrecking ball out there on the ice, racking up a deuce of minor penalties, and five. Yes, you read that right, FIVE huge hits. Siddals isn’t afraid to throw his body around, and that should make his opponents afraid. Another amazing part of his Goon of the Game performance: Justin Siddals was only out on the ice for fiteen and a half minutes. This guy doesn’t need much time on the ice to build his reputation as a tough son of a gun, and that earns Justin Siddals Goon of the Game honours.

Pivonka's Pick

While Detroit got smoked by the Whale its easy to overlook the dreadful game that Guts O'Bigbers had when he played nearly 16 minutes and went without a point, without a shot, without a PIM, without a fight or a hit. The only time he appears on the stat sheet is at the faceoff dot where he went 8/22. How do you have the opportunity for 22 pucks and only manage to touch it 8 times and then do absolutely nothing for the rest of the night? Vancouver won this game in spite of his play, not because of it. Guts needs to play with some balls if he wants to keep his 15minutes of ice time.
