Week 4, Game 61. Vancouver v Anchorage
#16
(This post was last modified: 08-09-2018, 08:25 PM by Bonk.)

When you are looking for a turning point of the game between Vancouver Whalers and the Anchorage Armada, you need look no further than 16:37 of the second period. That was when Soren Kierkegaard of the Vancouver Whalers scored his only one goal of the game with an assist from Jean-Luc Picard. Although that one goal put the Whalers up two to one over the Armada. With that goal, Mr. Kierkegaard took the soul out of the Armada and silenced the crowd for the remainder of the game. Thus secured victory of the Whalers and insured that things will remain cold in Anchorage. That is why I say the turning point of Game 61 Vancouver Whalers vs Anchorage Armada is my turning point of the game.

Goaltending Review

Johannes Leitner (VAN): I have never seen a goalie face so few shots over the course of an entire game. Leitner didn't even break a sweat. Somewhat shockingly, he did give up a goal on just six shots faced, but when you're facing that few shots, your team is probably dominating in front of you, and the Whalers were. Not a good performance nor a bad performance from Leitner, definitely a unique one though.

Larry Atta (ANC): As opposed to his opponent at the other end, Atta actually had to make saves more than once every ten minutes. He faced 30 shots, turning away 26 in a game where the team in front of him declined to show up at the rink that day. If it weren't for Atta, this easily could have been much worse based on the way the Armada played.

Clutch Play of the Game

Kristaps Ball's stat line looks relatively tame in this meeting--a goal from five shots and a single hit--but the details show us exactly how clutch Ball was against the Armada tonight.  After a scoreless first, the Armada struck early with the first goal of the second, scoring from a very late frustration penalty against Alex Andani.  Ball was unshaken--less than two minutes later, he strikes back with a power play goal of his own, flipping the momentum and opening up his team.  The Whalers would go on to score twice more in the second--a feat that likely doesn't happen without Ball's clutch goal.

SSPN Key Player

David Kastrba put up a tremendous performance in this game.  The very image of a team-first, playmaking winger, his three assists turned this game from a win to a blowout.  At every opportunity, Kastrba puts beautiful saucer passes tape-to-tape for his hard-shooting defensemen and wily forwards.  What's even more impressive is his restraint.  Kastrba only takes one shot on goal all night, but still comes away with a 3-point game and the first star.  Well-earned, says our lead analyst Jeremiah Roenicholas--and we agree!  Kastrba is clearly playing playoff hockey two weeks ahead, which still raises one question:  can he maintain this level of production into a deep playoff run?

A Book by its Cover - Key Stat of the Game

Physicality was the name of this game.  With 8 total penalties, a huge amount of this Whalers-Armada contest was decided in the corners and along the boards.  Our Key Stat of the Game is the hit total.  Vancouver struck constantly with 17 hits across the game.  Key physical players like David Kastrba and Alex Andani delivered crushing blow after crushing blow to the Armada's more vulnerable forwards.  Anchorage had trouble responding in kind, with only 11 hits of their own.  Two valiant attempts by Tucker Baloo aside, the team failed to generate a big physical presence on the ice and paid for it--Armada players were gassed and sore going into the third, and couldn't generate any meaningful offense.  With the big body lead for the Whalers, hits are our Key Stat of the Game.

Welcome to the 10th edition of the Shot Blocker of the Game award. Tonight's winner is Sean Stevenson Jr. of the Anchorage Armada!

This is Sean's first win of Shot Blocker of the Game in his career as he posted 2 blocked shots including one while the game was tied 1-1 on the 2nd of 3 shots that either missed the net or were blocked by the Armada. Ball picked up the puck off the boards and let go a good wrist shot that hit Stevenson Jr. straight in the leg but the big man didn't wince as he continued to try to get the puck out of the zone before it was shot again, blocked by Tucker Baloo and cleared out of the zone to keep the game 1-1. It would eventually be for naught as the Whalers ended up winning the game 4-1.

Blues' Goon of the Game

Another big game for the Whalers saw them push Anchorage aside in a 4-1 victory, with them outshooting the Armada 30-6. Crazy stuff. But who were all fo the real fans looking at during that game? The Armada’s Sean Stevenson Jr, who raked in Goon fo the Game honours for the first time in his career. While not racking up any body checks in this offensive snooze fest for the Armada, Stevenson Jr. grabbed himself a couple of minor penalties when he decided he wanted to get the hell off of the ice. Sometimes the box is preferable to the ice, especially when your team is only putting six pucks on net for the whole game. Congrats Sean!

Pivonka's Pick

The Armada got sunk by the Whalers and its easy to see why. Vancouver outshot Anchorage by 24 shots, 30-6. Yeah that's right. The Armada only had six shots on goal. What's even more remarkable is that Bust had two of those six shots. There is just no way to win at this level when you're being outshot 30-6 and I don't care how good your goalie is. Now, Bust went without a point and finished with a minus two despite making up a third of the shots for his team. First overall pick Aittokallio played roughly 19 minutes and only managed one hit with no shots but he did manage to stay even despite only winning 8 of his 17 draws.
