Game 64: Kelowna vs Colorado
:Knights 5 -  Raptors 6

Do we have a doozy for you tonight the juggerneaut Kelowna Knights go up again the rising Colorado Raptors, let's sink our teeth into this one, get through the first two periods and get to the good stuff!

Period 1

With so much scoring it's going to be hard to talk about anything but goals. The Raptors took first blood but the Knights won the period. Tye Maximino had his third goal off the year off the break away pass by Andrew Martin. The knights wouldn't take long to respond though when the Knights star Cash Savage sinked a file hole goal for his 8th of the year to tie the game up. The Knights would double up in shots, and double up in goals when the first 20 came to an end. Elias scored for his sixth goal as him and his line continue to roll this season.

Period 2

The Raptors wouldn't take long to reply with rookie sensataion Sulak O'Hritea would finish off the tick tack toe play to bury his fifth of the year. Ignatius blunt would keep the goals coming, 8 minutes later he would take the nighty feed from Gvidas to be Kata Vilde over the shoulder and regain the lead. Well it would be penalty troubles that would let Kelowna get back into this game. A carless play by Zoidberg gave the Knights the power play and they had there chance to strike again, and strike they would Kevin Maddox with his first goal of the season, to tie the game at threes going into the third. And now things get interesting.

Period 3

Third period all tied and the Raptors came out doing what they do best. Scored two minutes into the first, scoring two minutes into the second and they would score two minutes into the third. Alex Winters from Katuso Yamaguchi! And the Raptors take the first bite. Knights won't give up that easy, Elias Svensson picks off the pas by Tory McLure shortly after the goal, and the puck would not come back to the Raptors for awhile. Daddy Mack takes the pass, and works it up ice. Over to Dekens, Dekens shoots! High and wide, Daddy mack picks up the pick and shoots! Missed far post. Elias Svensson picks up the pick and gives it a go! Another miss! Greg Connors grabs it now, back to Dekenes and he takes another crack! Saved by Crawling with a huge rebound to Daddy Mack and he buries it! 4-4 game! The game would settle down till the halfway mark. Where we broke the tie with an abrupt goal. Nate Forsberg with the clean faceoff loss. Deku Izuku picks it up, over to Paquette, over to Walker, back to Paquette, back to Walker! Shot by Walker! And it's 5-4 KNIGHTS! But these pesky raptors will not go away! Three minutes left in the third. Knights have peppered the Raptors with 17 shots, but they won't budge. The Forsberg line is on the ice, and Forsberg loses another draw. O'Dowd moves it to Izuku, to Dekens, Dekens tries to send it back to Izuku but Gvidas steals the puck! He passes it back to Zoidberg who movies it up ice, into the Kelowna zone. Where he is REEFED by Darren McCarty, but he gets back up and grabs the puck, slides it over to the open Forsberg who wires it home! We're tied and we're going to OT.

Shoot out

An uneventful 2 shot over time would solve nothing and this game will be decided by a skills contest. Both goalies got lit up in the game but locked it down for the shoot out. Boris Denisovich of the Knights attempts the back hand forehand and shut down by Crawling. The point leading Kazlauskas is up for Colorado, goes for the datsyukian deke and its stopped by Vilde. Daddy Mack is up, but his nifty mits weren't nifty enough and Crawling makes the save. Vaskov tries to just wind up for the slapper at the point and Kata Vilde stones him. Next goal wins at this point. Matej Elias is up for the Knights and is a shoot out hero, wines, dines, slides it around and he misses the net! The game is now on Philipp Winters stick, skates in, hesitates, pulls it the other way, Kata is down! And HE SCORES! RAPTORS WIN! RAPTORS WIN!

What a game, and a huge win for the blue and yellow.

King's Three Crowns

1. Kevin Maddox, he was absolutely buzzing, an insane 7 shots! One hit and three blocked shots. All on top of his first goal.
2. Matej Elias, another player who peppered the goalie, 6 shots, a hit and a goal.
3. Gvidas Kazlauskas, in a 11 goal game, he was somehow the only one with two points. A pair of assist Gvidas earns him third star.
4. Scottey Crawfling, we need to give a 4th star here. Rarely does a goalie have such a great performance and still allow 5 goals. But 35 games on 40 shots. Crawling took a beating.

3 Stars

1 - Peter Walker (KEL) - Peter definitely deserves the number 1 spot this game, both assisting in a goal, and scoring a goal himself. His goal came in the 3rd period, giving Kelowna a goal advantage before Colorado scored back. But not only that he is a leader on the ice as well. He won 17/24 Faceoffs he was in, as well as playing 19 minutes of the game, with 3 minutes in PP.

2 - Tye Maximino (COL) - A good pick for the second star of the game, with scoring the first goal of the game. Scoring the first goal of the game, helps their teammates get excited about the game and gives them more energy. Not only that, Tye played 17:30 minutes of gameplay, he played 4 minutes of PK, and he was responsible for helping Colorado stop 4/5 Penalties.

3 - Alex Winters (COL) - One of the best rookies, point-wise, in the league gets the 3rd star here. Alex has been great this game, scoring a goal, keeping a +1 +/-, and blocked a shot this game, making him a solid 3rd-star pick of the night. All of that while only playing 13 minutes tonight.

Underrated Player of the Game:
Mason Brown (COL) - 10 points the regular ice time. Mason Brown still maintained a +2 +/- while being on the fourth line. He played 13 minutes tonight with 1 minute on the PK, with that he also blocked 3 shots. Not every player has to be Flashy or scores the goals, others, like Mason, just does his thing every night and gets results.

Face-off %

KEL 49/84  (58%)
COL 35/84  (41%)

Even though Colorado hasn't been the best on the faceoffs, they made up for it by scoring goals to keep them in the game.

Best Faceoff % on each team
(COL) Nate Forsberg   11/29   (47%)
(KEL) Peter Walker     17/24   (70%)

Kelowna has a great face-off player in their hands with Peter. Its hard to maintain a 50% faceoff %, but having 70% in one night is very rare to see.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Everytime you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Kelowna Knights: 49 wins on 84 faceoffs taken ( 58,3%)
Colorado Raptors: 35 wins on 84 faceoffs taken (41,7%)

Clear advantage for the Kelowna Knights once again.

The winner and the loser for today's game:

Winner: Kelowna Knights' center Peter Walker with 17 wins on 24 faceoff taken (70,8%)
Loser: Colorado Raptors' center Andrew Martin with 5 wins on 16 faceoff taken (31,3%)

In today's game the Kelowna Knights traveled to Colorado to face the Raptors. This was a crazy but a fun game to watch. The final score was 6-5 seeing the Raptors pull out the win in this high scoring affair at home, and while their want that one guy who stood out above everyone else, this was a hard decision to make but ultimately the Barstool Player of the Game is awarded to Peter Walker of the Kelowna Knights. Even tho the Knights ultimately lost this game, Walker had a stat line of 1-1-2 and was an even player +/- 0. The 3rd line center was all over the place and while putting up a goal and a primary assist he won 17 of 24 faceoffs. Many of them coming in the defensive zone. Even tho the knights lost this game it would have been worse if Peter Walker wasn't on the ice tonight and that is why he was named the Barstool Player of the Game.

Raptors Rookie defenseman spotlight: Jake Reid Raptors

G:0 A:1 P:+/-:1  PIM:4 S:0 SB:1 H:TOI: 19:50

Jake Reid of the Colorado Raptors is the Rookie defenseman under the spotlight tonight. One of the surprise packages this season coming in as an enforcer Reid has been a wall at the back for a Raptors team doing better than what most pundits expected at the beginning of the season. It was a mixed bag for Reid this evening. There was reason to celebrate as he picked up his first point for the season with a secondary assist on the game opening goal. However Reid's passing was poor only completing nine of his eighteen attempts and he was lucky not to cost his team when he was issued a double minor in the third for a vicious high stick.

Defensive Forward of the Game sponsored by Trojan Condoms

An absolute nail biter in Colorado as the Raptors defeat the Knights 6-5 in a shootout. The defensive forward of the game is no stranger to this segment, and that is Michael O'Dowd of the Kelowna Knights. Despite the loss, O'dowd continued his defensive domination from last game. He continues to be a force to be reckoned with at the dot winning 18 out of 27 faceoffs for a rate of 66%. O'dowd brought some physicality to the game with a team leading 4 hits. Despite all his efforts, he neded the night as a -1 on the plus/minus scale but his role helped Kelowna reached the shootout stage of the game before they ultimately fell.

Welcome to the NWHN Postgame Report! Alright let's get this right out of the way: How on earth did the Colorado Raptors win this game? Kelowna doubled them in shots and dominated for most of the game, yet ended up on the losing side after not being able to get one in in the shootout. On top of that, Colorado didn't spend a single second on the Powerplay, yet took five penalties themselves, giving the Knights plenty of time on the man advantage. With a game like this, you obviously have to talk about the goalies. Kata Vilde, one of the best goalies so far this season, had a real off-game, letting in 5 goals on just 20 shots. On the other hand, scoring with 25% of your shots is quite an impressive feat as well, especially considering that none of them were with the man advantage. So kudos to Colorado for pulling this off, but don't expect something liek this to happen again anytime soon...

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

What a show this game was. The offense was buzzing tonight, and no one could stop either team - not even the goalies. It's no surprise that our Bust of the Game goes to Kata Vilde of Kelowna. His team managed to out-shoot Colorado 40 to 20, but Vilde was like a sieve tonight, only making 15 saves on 20 shots, posting a .750 save percentage. This was clearly the difference tonight. Kelowna was on fire in the other zone, but they couldn't get saves from their goalie when it counted. You can score 100 goals, but if your goalie lets in 101, there's nothing more you can do. Luckily for Kelowna, they're atop the league heading into the final stretch, so one unlucky game won't phase them too much.

This Fail of the Game, brought to you by Harvey's, immediately follows what some would consider the biggest win of the game.

Facing one of the powerhouses of the league, the Colorado Raptors managed to hold them decently and were still contending at the end of the third, trailing only by one goal and trying hard to level the score. As the story of the game tells us, they did manage to get that tying goal, and then went to win the game in a shootout. Sachimo Zoidberg Jr was the one to make the deciding pass to Nate Forsberg, and wanted to celebrate with his teammate, but maybe he should have been just a little more cautious of whether it was reciprocated.

Punching Bag Of The Game
Michael O’Dowd

Michael O’Dowd was run over by a truck tonight. Well, five of them. Five different times. There was nary a shift where Michael was on the ice where he wasn’t firmly planted by a nasty forearm shiver. He had trouble keeping his feet beneath him and looked woefully wobbly in the third period. Didn’t see much ice time after the ten minute mark of the third period. I’m not sure if he disappeared into the dressing room, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see he was hit again on his way back there.

It was a regular barn burner folks, what a game and what play out of the offensive personel of both teams. Colorado eventually came out on top tallying 6 goals to Kelowna's 5. Scoring was spread all throughout the lineup of both teams, with 25 separate players getting at least one point, which is actually more than the number of players who were held pointless. Nate Forsberg is credited with the winning goal with just over 2 minutes left in regulation.

The big win for Colorado today had to be on the powerplay. They capitalized on 4 of 5 chances, and really made Kelowna pay for their lack of discipline.

Physical Presence of the Night - Sulak O'Hritea
The physical presence of the night easily goes to Sulak O'Hritea of the Colorado Raptors, as he had four hits, was able to score a goal, and won both face offs he took. Sulak started his night off by putting the body on Cash Savage thirteen minutes into the first period. It wasn't a massive hit, but more a hit that grinds and wears down the opponent. Sulak would go on to score one minute and thirty seconds into the second period by picking up a rebound off the boards after Tony Pepperoni would shoot wide of the net. In the third period, Sulak would record three hits in the final three minutes of the game, and would win two massive face-offs in the overtime period.

Trail to the Box
The Colorado Raptors seemed to have a pretty worn trail to the penalty box tonight, as they took five minor penalties, while Kelowna would take no minor penalties. In the end, Kelwona would only convert on one of these power plays, which would result in Colorado being able to force overtime and get the win in extra minutes. Colorado's penalties were all the result of poor disincline. Vladimir Vaskov would get called for hooking in the second, Sachimo Zoidberg Jr. would pick up a roughing penalty during the second period as well. Sulak O'Hritea would be called for interference in the third, and Jake Reid would take a double minor for swinging his stick in third.

Neither goalie was on top of their game, and both teams found the back of the net with ease. A very exciting game to watch as a fan, and even though Crawfling faced double the shots as Vilde, he pulled out the win in the shootout.

Goaltending Review

Kata Vilde (KEW): In what may be Vilde's worst performance of the year, the Knights' goalie gave up five goals on just twenty shots faced. Unfortunately for Vilde, every goal came at even strength. This is going to be a test of Vilde's mental fortitude, seeing if he is able to put this game out of his mind quickly and ready up for another game shortly after this dismal performance against the plucky Raptors. It says something about the quality of the team in front of him that the Knights still earned a point, even on an off night from their goalie.

Scottey Crawfling (COL): Sometimes you just do enough to get the win, and that's what Crawfling did tonight. 35 saves on 40 shots, as well as two saves in the shootout, earned the Raptors a big two points against a heavily favored opponent. Crawfling came through for his team when they needed him to, and the win reflected that.

Welcome to the 11th edition of the Shot Blocker of the Game award. Tonight's winner is Kevin Maddox of the Kelowna Knights.

It was a close race for this one as both Maui and Maddox made cases for the award. I went with Maddox however because of a single block. The Knights had just tied the game 4-4 and the Raptors got in the zone quick off the faceoff but Maddox was able to get back enough to get his stick on the shot and deflect it off into the corner and out of harms way. The Knights would eventually go on to lose in a shootout but that play could have led the Raptors to a big momentum swing and kept the Knights from getting the point form forcing overtime.
