PGS Game 83: Colorado vs. Detroit
#1

Raptors 2 - 1 Falcons

Summary:
Period 1
This game had a very exciting first period. It got started quickly with a goal by Alex Winters only 3:28 into the first period. Colorado took their foot off the petal and they paid for it quickly. A penalty a minute after their first goal gave momentum to Detroit. Detroit, while unable to capitalize on their powerplay opportunity were able to place many shots on young goaltender Brandon Sando. When Jake Reid took a penalty at 9:08, Detroit was able to capitalize. Quickly off the draw, Detroit was able to even the game at 1 with a goal by Flacko Lagerfield.

Colorado, sensing the change in momentum stepped their game up and were able to compete better for the remainder of the period. They were rewarded for their hard work when Lightning Jones was forced into a holding penalty at 11:39. Quickly after Troy McClure III was able to put one past Cedric Robinson to put the Raptors back up 2-1. The period came to an end and Colorado looked like they were in a lucky spot to be up. They were being outshot 11-6 and if a few bounces had gone the other way Detroit could have been the ones taking the lead into intermission.

Period 2
The second period is where this game could have gotten ugly. Cedric Robinson single handily kept his team in the game as Detroit was outshot by 20 in the second. Powerplays were 3-1 in favour of the Raptors but Detroit only managed 3 shots throughout the entire period. It was obvious Detroit's coach was upset with their reaction coming into the 2nd down 2-1.  The period ended scoreless, and there was a sense of relief amongst the Falcons that they may have calmed the storm. They would have to prove that their performance in the 2nd was an anamoly and take back control of the game.

Period 3
Sadly for the Falcons their efforts came up short. While cutting down the Raptors to only 7 shots in the third they themselves only managed 4. This is not the kind of effort that is needed when attempting a comeback in the SMJHL. The Falcons played a more disciplined game taking no penalties, but they also were unable to draw anything from the Raptors in an attempt to generate some offense. The Raptors were able to execute their game plan to perfection and should be commended for their ability to shut-down detroit in the 2nd and 3rd period.

3 Stars of the Game:
3: Troy McClure III
An all-around good game from the defenseman. He potted the game-winning goal early in the first, had 4 shots on target and managed to throw in a couple hits as well. He logged the most minutes of any player on the ice tonight and was a large part of the Raptors Victory

2: Alex Winters
A solid performance tonight for Alex winters gave him a goal and one of 5 positive +/- ratings for either team in the game tonight. He managed his performance in only 14:20 in ice-time all 5 on 5, giving the Raptors good bang for their buck when Winters was out on the ice.

1: Cedric Robinson
While both goalies posted exactly .944 Sv% Robinson had to face 2 shots for every 1 that Brandon Sando did. He posted an amazing 23 save performance in the 2nd that kept the Falcons in this game until the very end. While he won't be happy with the result Robinson played extraoridnarily tonight and for that he deserved to be recognized.

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
We look into a tripping that's not a trpping

Dank Boija had to sit in the dog booth for 2 minutes during this incident.
I don't know what's worse, the faulty call or the blatant dive from the opposing player.

These calls ruins games and might be the difference between a playoff or not.
One must feel really bad for Boija that did not do anything wrong, this has to be addressed quickly.

If we had SHL calibre refs this would not have have to happen.

Rookie Spotlight
This was a nail biter of a game ladies and gentleman, and the oddest part was most of the action taking place in the first period! It was tough to pick a rookie to focus on for this with as all through out on each team the work load was quiet evenly distributed, but it came down to none other than Nate Forsburg Center on the Colorado Raptors. Not only did he tally and assist but, he landed a few shots on goal, which is where Colorado really stood out in the stat line. Along with that he laid out a couple of players, and got his body in the way of a few shots. His face off percentage was just below 50% in the game, which is respectable for a rookie going against an established vet. All in all he was helpful in just about every aspect and, there isn't much more you can ask for out of your center!

SPECIAL TEAMS REPORT

Tonight we look at Game 83 of the SMJHL, Colorado Raptors vs Detroit Falcons.

First Period
Derek Deffner is called for roughing at 4:42. The Falcons with an early power play, fail to produce a goal off of 2 shots. Jake Reid would be called for hooking at 9:08. In just 2 seconds, the Falcons' Flacko Lagerfield snipes one passed Brando Sando to tie the game at 1. When Lightning Jones is called for holding at 11:39, Colorado would waste no time and get one passed Cedric Robinson at 11:49. Colorado would go down a man once again when Ignatius Blunt is called for high sticking at 17:23. Detroit would not get any shots during this stretch of time. The period would end 2-1 in favor of Colorado.

Second Period
Wolfhard Richter is called for holding at 0:30 giving Colorado an early advantage. The Raptors would produce 3 shots on net but are unable to beat Robinson. Dank Boija is called at 8:48 for tripping. Colorado would absolutely pepper Robinson, producing 7 shots on net, but all are stopped by the rookie tender. Colorado finds themselves down a man once again at 16:35 when Phillip Winter is called for holding. Detroit would only produce 1 shot on goal during this stretch.  Detroit's Hippo Passamus is called for hooking at 19:33. Nothing would come of this advantage as Colorado's PP unit isn't able to get passed Robinson.

Third Period
No penalties this period.

The SMJHL Bust of the Game Award

What an electrifying first period, unfortunately, the same can't be said for the second and third. All goals were scored in the first, leaving us with our final score of 2-1. Despite Colorado out-shooting Detroit 23-3 in the second, the score remained deadlocked into the third, where a boring display of neutral zone keep-away took us to the final whistle. With the score being so close, it's hard to pick a bust, but we have to go with Hypolact Asia for this game. Going -1 and rarely touching the puck, Hypoclat should have spent more time shooting than hitting. His team needed the offense tonight, and he just couldn't produce. Taking the body is important, but not when you're sacrificing a counter-attack for it. All in all, Detroit got out lucky this game. With a bit of puck luck, this could have easily been a 6-1 game.

Today on Harvey's Fail of the Game, we look at what might have brought a terrible fate to the Colorado Raptors, and has brought terrible shame on the player involved.

The fail happens at the very end of the game, as the raptors are up 2-1 in the last minute. Cedric Robinson has been pulled for the Falcons, and the open net is waiting for the puck. Phillip Winter gets the puck to the Falcons' zone and passes it to Troy McClure with an open path to the net. But McClure, afflicted by some weird brain cramp, does not shoot the puck in the net and completely misses slowly dropping it him. He panics, and the puck ends up on an opponents' stick, who luckily for him won't go to score a game tying goal.

Week Six. Game 83. Colorado Raptors Raptors versus Detroit Falcons

Analysis of the First Star: Cedric Robinson Falcons

When the goalie of the losing team takes the first star everyone usually looks twice. In this case it's because Cedric Robinson literally stood on his head to keep the constant barrage from The Raptors from getting behind him and keeping the scoring to single digits.

He is single-handed the reason the Falcons didn't lose the game 10-1. He figured out Gvidas Kazlauskas early in the game and kept the deadly forward from scoring on any of his seven shots. Not many other goalies have been able o do that in season 42. And for that alone, he earns the first star.

Great job Cedric!

We had an exciting game despite all the scoring coming in the first period. In the second, we were treated to what must be one of the best single period goaltending performances we've ever seen out of Cedric Robinson. In the second frame, he was perfect saving all 23 of the shots that were peppered at him by Colorado. Without that performance, the game could have gotten very messy very quickly. As a result of this period and the rest of his game performance, he was given first star of the night in what was ultimately a losing effort.

Goaltending Review

Brando Sando (COL): The Raptors backup goalie had himself another fantastic game, pushing the team's win streak to a stellar 7 straight. One goal against on 18 shots is a solid performance and it was good enough to earn his team the win. This was also Sando's sixth win this season as he starts his SMJHL career with six straight wins overall. Having a backup goalie perform so well regularly does wonders for a team's confidence, where even if the starter his having an off day, the backup can play a great game of hockey.

Cedric Robinson (DET): Not to be outshone by the Raptors goalie, Falcons netminder Cedric Robinson threw up a stellar 34 saves on 36 shots to give his team more than a chance to win the game. Despite the loss, Robinson can leave the arena with his head held high as he did everything he could to earn the Falcons some crucial points, even if it didn't work out in this game.

Robinson Impresses in Defeat

Robinson will need a few ice backs after this one as he faced 36 shots from the Raptors. This was a low scoring affair but still an intense game up to the final second.

Alex Winters beat Robinson early to give the Raptors the lead. Lagerfield answered for Deteoit on the power play a few minutes later. Lightning Jones was called for holding and gave Colorado the advantage on the ice. Seconds later, McClure had Colorado in front.

Robinson had one of the best periods of his young career in the second period. He was lit up facing an amazing 23 shots to Detroit's paltry 3. He stood on his head and then some to keep his team alive. His team let him down in this one though.

Welcome to the 14th edition of the Shot Blocker of the Game award. Tonight's winner is a newbie to the award, Wolfhard Richter of the Detroit Falcons.

Detroit is battling for playoff positioning and as such it is great to see someone like Wolfhard putting in the effort and taking the pain to try and keep the puck out of his net. His highlight came early in the 3rd as Nico Wallner slapped a pair of clappers from the point looking to extend the lead. Richter took 2 to the hip as he dropped to keep both out of harms way. Though the Falcons would drop the final decision by that 2-1 score he preserved, he gave his all for his team on that play.

You wanna know what makes Gvidas Kazlauskas one of the favorites for this years Top Rookie Award? It's the fact that he never quits, that he is always dangerous even if things aren't going his way in a game and he isn't getting the bounces he would like to have. Like in this game versus the Detroit Falcons, Kazlauskas, or Captain Crazy as his teammates like to call him, would wind up not getting on the scoresheet in this 2-1 win by his Colorado Raptors, but he'd still provide seven shots, constant net presence and a good two-way play to his team, including some time on the penalty kill. If you are looking for an offensive player who is an asset to your team even when he isn't scoring, Captain Crazy is your guy. Oh and by the way, did I mention that this game had one of the most lopsided periods the SMJHL has seen all season? In a game that was otherwise relatively even, the Raptors just exploded in the second period, piling up 23 shots against a measly 3 by the Falcons. Somehow their efforts didn't lead to a single goal though so the team had to ride their 2-1 lead from the first period, ironically their weakest one of the game, until the end.

Blues' Goon of the Game

Our last Goon of the game for Season 42 of the SMJHL is Ignatius Blunt! In this game between the Colorado Raptors and the Detroit Falcons, Blunt tossed his body around six times, likely causing some sort of injury, as he is one tough son of a gun. A also grabbed a two minute minor for high sticking and plus one rating in exactly sixteen and a half minutes on the ice. Ignatius is projected to go fairly high in the upcoming SHL draft, so look for him to become one tough guy to play against, especially in his first send down season in Season 43!

Pivonka's Pick

While the Raptors feasted on the Falcons, the Raptor's Andrew Martin certainly didn't make the win easy. His no points, even rating, no pims, no shots and no hits was less than helpful despite the 13 and a half minutes he played. But his abysmal 4/16 at the dot was the cherry on top of an awful night. The only thing consistent about Martin's play is how bad it is. How can you play 3 minutes on the power play and not have a shot on goal? Just one of the many talents Andrew Martin brings to the ice each and every game. If Martin continues to fail as he did tonight, Colorado will have to explore a trade. Surely, there is a used puck bag available somewhere....probably with more faceoff wins.
