Game 73: Detroit Falcons vs Montreal Militia
Falcons 3 - Militia 2

Game 73: Detroit Falcons vs Montreal Militia

It was cool night in the Montreal when the Falcons came to town. No one in the “The Source Of Impact” arena (someone on the Militia might want to rename their arena) was ready for what was next.
The first period
The first period of the Falcons Militia match up, was a fast paced up and down game. That resulted on zero goals. Although things did get a little chippy and saw, Rafe Ulrich go to the box for Cross-checking.

The second period
The Falcons got the scoring going in second when Marc Palicka scored via a beautiful drop pass from Flacko Lagerfield. This goal got the falcons fired up and it deflated the hearts of the fans of the Montreal.

Christian Walker quickly retaliated and tied it up for the Militia by scoring his fifth of the season with assist going to Kevin Kazarian and Dabcity Savage. Which restored some of the spirt of the fans.

Two minutes after that the Detroit Falcons took the lead again behind a goal by Kyle Keenan Jr, this goal drained the energy from the arena and pretty much sealed the deal for the Falcons. The second was a clean period with the only penalty going to Rahotep Tutankhamun for Holding.

The third period
The third period saw Detroit Falcons, extended their lead thanks to a goal from Pingy Pingu, with helpers for Dank Boija, Tig Murphy. It is always exciting when Pingy is putting it in the net.

The Militia was not going to lose this game without a fight though. Christian Walker scored in the sixth minute of the third. Montreal did pull Petr Vrana with thirty seconds left but sadly that proved to be too little too late. Although everyone was on their best behavior as the entire period was penalty free.

The goal tending for the evening saw two great performances from Cedric Robinson and Petr Vrana but win went to Robinson.

3 Stars
1 - Christian Walker – Earned the first star of the game for his two goals.
2 - Marc Palicka – Got the second star of the game get the scoring going with the first goal of the game.
3 - Pingy Pingu – Got the third star of the for Pingy’s goal, two hits and a shot blocked.

THE CRUCIBLE: Analysis of Physical Play

Hit of the Game: 19:50 of 2nd period - Viktor Valentine is hit by Tobias Viklund and loses puck.

With the second period winding down and Detroit nursing a one goal lead, the Militia were hungry to get some momentum going before heading into the locker room for the second intermission. Viktor Valentine was looking to carry the puck through the neutral zone and made one too many moves without realizing that he was being tracked down by Tobias Viklund, who laid into the Montreal defender with an old-school, open-ice hip check. This resulted in a substantial scrum, during which several Militia players looking as though they had lost their composure, and allowed the Falcons to carry their own momentum into the third period, scoring the eventual game-winner just four minutes into the final frame.

Big Richard's Auto Collision Hitters of the Game:

3. Pavel Pivonka, 3 hits
2. Charlie Schieck, 3 hits
1. Harvey Danger, 4 hits

Missed Opportunities: The Turning Points That Never Happened

In this weekly segment, we explore the moment(s) in this week's featured game where a team or player blew an opportunity to make their mark on the game and either win it or at least turn it in their favour. In this week's game between the Detroit Falcons and Montreal Militia, the greatest missed opportunity was:

Mishandled puck in goal-mouth scrum prevents game-tying goal

With the Militia pushing and an extra attacker on the ice late in the game, a broken play occurred near the Detroit net that saw Piotr Czerkawski fire a bullet just wide of the net from in tight. However, the puck took a funny hop off of the end boards and landed right on the stick of Rafe Ulrich, who was looking at an empty net and the potential for a tied game. Unfortunately for Montreal, Ulrich seemed to be just as surprised by the bounce as everyone else, managing only to push a weak shot from an awkward position towards the Detroit net, which Cedric Robinson was able to corral just in time.

Fourth Stars of the Game:

In any game, there are a number of unheralded players whose contributions don't get listed on the scoresheet, or at least not the "sexy" columns. For each team, we have selected one such player whose game tonight won't be talked about as much as others', but was still a big part of their teams' effort.

Detroit Falcons: Aleksandria Aleksandrovia, D

Aleksandrovia contributed a rock-steady game on the back-end for the Falcons this evening, playing 19 minutes of mistake-free hockey - all at even strength. The most notable moments were two key shot blocks that drew applause from the fans in attendance, as well as a solid hit that was felt around the rink. Aleksandrovia was a presence in the offensive zone as well, chipping in with a shot on the night as well as several dangerous passing plays.

Montreal Militia: Harvey Danger, D

Danger once again showed why he's considered a defensive stalwart and human wrecking ball in this game. His 19 minutes included a little over two minutes of penalty killing on a unit that held the Falcons scoreless, with Danger contributing a sliding shot block to the cause. In addition, he led all skaters with four hits on the night, including one that left Detroit defenseman Tig Murphy winded on the ice for a brief period. His fearlessness in puck battles along the wall was a key part of the Militia's game, and despite not hitting the scoresheet, he played an important role for his team.

Rookie Spotlight
A close game between the Detroit Falcons and the Montreal Militia, two teams that have quiet a few rookies from the most recent draft class, but one of them stood just a bit above the rest, today we will focus on Marc Pavlicka the rookie Center on the first line of the Falcons. He found his way in Detroit right at the end of round two, and he's been playing as expected if not better! He drew first blood today on a missed shot from teammate Lagerfield to put the Falcons up with an early lead. A small one, but one they would never quiet recover from. He also managed to body Militia man Hudec, showing hes got strength in more than just his shot. It's a lot of pressure to handle first line face offs often as a rookie, but he seem to manage winning 12/18 face offs. It was a hard fought game and, but striking early, and winning those key face offs for certain help put his team above Montreal today.

Good evening, I'm Joe Barnaby and welcome to... alright, you know what: Screw this! Enough with the in-character shit, let's get real. Who the hell chose this game as a PGS? There was absolutely nothing exciting in it, how am I supposed to write 100+ words on a dull affair where the better team won on a very average score of 3-2, where the goalies were good but not great and where there were barely any special team situations? Oh right I see, I guess you want me to write about Christian Walker, a choice so obvious because he was the only one who did anything noteworthy (scoring two goals, that is) in a game that everyone else will have forgotten about within a week. Alright then so... yay Christian Walker! And now excuse while I move on to write about a game that's actually interesting.

[Hope nobody is taking offense, just poking some fun at a game where I didn't find anything to write about at first glance^^]

Blues' Goon of the Game

A first for the Goon of the Game series comes tonight: a Goon of the Game that didn’t put up a single penalty minute. Also the first player to earn Goon of the Game honours twice, I present to you ladies and gentlemen, Harvey Danger! Danger put up a flat stat line aside from his monstrous four hits and a clutch blocked shot in his team’s 3-2 loss to the Detroit Falcons. Danger proved to be a solid grinding player, eating just over 19 minutes tonight and laying the bod a few times to assert his dominance on the ice.

Pivonka's Pick

When the Falcons crapped on the heads of the Militia, it wasn't pretty but there are a few key takeaways to note in this game. In particular, it was an abysmal performance by Cody Johansen who finished his 18+ minutes of ice time without a hit or shot or point in the entire game. What's even more damming is his 6/19 in the faceoff circle. Montreal can't afford performances like that from their top line Center if they hope to make the playoffs again this year. Now, Cody Johansen did finish the game with an even rating but other than his appalling faceoffs. Simply inexcusable for a top line center.
