S42 Championship Week
(This post was last modified: 08-27-2018, 06:38 PM by sarmo.)

Task one: Mike Izzy (born September 4th, 1995) is a Canadian professional ice hockey winger and an alternate captain for the Calgary Dragons of the Simulation Hockey League (SHL). He played for the Kelowna Knights in his junior career where he won top rookie and most exciting player. The Ontario native is a key member of team Austria (IIHF).

Born - September 4th, 1995 (Age 25)
Country - Canada
Height - 6 ft 0 in
Weight - 228 lb
Position - Left Wing
Shoots - Right
SHL team - Calgary Dragons
National team - Austria
SHL Draft - 4th overall, S35,
Edmonton Blizzards (Via Hamilton Steelhawks)
Playing career - S35 - Present

Izzy was selected by the Edmonton Blizzards in the S35 SHL Entry draft and was eventually acquired and signed long term with the Calgary Dragons and has won 2 Challenge Cups with the club. Izzy's production and growth improved throughout his young career and has quickly ascended into the top player role on the prestigious team.

Task two: Richard C. Hocolate would be my choice for the unsung hero. As good as we all know he is,  his performance was overshadowed by his teammates good play in high minutes. He helped his team to 12 wins in 16 games and sustained the high octane offense by the Wolfpack. Chocolate is at the twilight of his prime and looked hungry to get another ring,  which might be the last one he sees in an evolving SHL. He came big in most of the games and was an underrated matchup,  losing only 3 regulation games and 1 in OT. He showed great consistency and poise, posting a .915 SV% in a high scoring west and deserves to be recognized for helping the team win a cup.  The Dragons are a good team but without an experienced goaltender like Chocolate, they wouldn't have been able to come even close to the finals.

Task four: pm'd Pris

Task seven: Manuel Gotze and Hunter Jones both made a difference for their respected teams. Gotze (S40) is a rookie winger but played like a veteran through out the playoffs for the New England Wolfpack and was easily the best looking raw talent for the team. He was a major bright spot and was depended on to be effective in the SHL finals. Even though his team fell short, he posted a respected 6 goals and 9 points, shooting just under an impressive 18% and went +2 with 57 hits. Hunter Jones took advantage of his spotlight for the Dragons and had his way in the playoffs. The S38 winger breathed fire into the finals, toasting the Wolfpack in a breakout performance and countered the offense with a little bit of his own, ending the playoffs with 14 assists, 16 points and +9. It was just his time to be the best young guy in the finals.

Task nine: pm'd Pris

task 2: unsung hero

Although they did not win, the Wolfpack surprised everyone by making it to the finals. If I were to describe the team as a National Hockey League Stanley Cup comparison, it would be the Las Vegas Golden Knights. Much Like Marc Andre Fleury, the New England Wolfpack relied on the goalkeeping of Mikke Laukkanen to keep them afloat. Similar to his unique spelling of his name, Mikke Laukkanen was the leading goalie by a wide margin. Only Richard C. Hocolate had more wins. However, the great Mikke Laukkanen led the league in the save percentage. This meant that the Wolfpack allowed an astounding 2.61 points per game. While Calgary was nothing to scoff at either, as the Dragons allowed 2.88, that near quarter goal of a difference adds up over a series. The problem was, despite the great saving of Mikke Laukkanen, the goals for New England and their Connecticut based team, were not there so Calgary took advantage of how much better their offense was.

Task 4 & 9 sent to Pris

Task 2

My choice for the Season 42 Shl Challenge cup playoffs would have to be non other than star player from the Calgary dragons Mike Izzy! After an incredibale regular season mike knew he had to be better than ever to get himself and his team another cup! Izzy finished the playoffs with an incrediable 14 goals and 10 assists proving he had not only skill to put the puck in the net but also good gamesmanship to pass the puck around and get great opportunities in front of the net. Another key factor to the dragons winning yet another cup was his +/- through out the playoffs where he had an incrediable +11. Mike also helped his team win 12 games while only losing 4 whole games in the playoffs which in itself is an incrediable accomplishment. So with all these stats and incrdiable heights mike has set how could you pick anyone else to be the unsung hero!

Task 7

I Believe there are a bunch of young talent in the dragons roster that led them and helped greatly in them winning the season 42 challenge cup. Even though most people would think an attacker was the most key role being shooter mcgavin getting a game winning goal in the finals but I would have to say defense wins games and say the young talent of Ostap Maksimov is one of the Keys reasons on why the dragons got to hoist yet another cup! Though he didn’t score any goals through out the playoffs he assisted on 13. His time on the ice was well spent where he finished the playoffs with an outstanding plus minus of +7! Though he didn’t score on the powerplay itself he assisted on 4 of the goals to help lead his team to victory. He had 14 blocked shots and played an outstanding 344 minutes in the playoffs which is great for a young talent like himself.

Task 8
[Image: fVn01a0.jpg]

TASK ONE: In at least 150 words, write an introductory paragraph for a potential Wikipedia article about one of the players in the finals. Include draft season and the teams they have played for.

Mike Izzy, the Left Wing for the Calgary Dragons, was drafted in the SHL’s Season 35 draft. The Left Wing, who has played for the Kelowna Knights in the SMJHL, and the Calgary Dragons in the SHL. He was originally drafted by the Edmonton Blizzard in the SHL Draft but was traded by them before he ever had the chance to play for the team. Mike Izzy has been a fantastic player for the Dragons and had a career year in Season 42 on his way to a championship with the Dragons. Mike Izzy has seen 2 Championships in his time in the SHL, with his first one coming in Season 40 and his most recent one in Season 42, both of which were earned with the Calgary Dragons. Mike Izzy also plays for Austria in the IIHF Tournaments, as one of the key top line players leading a small nation to big success. (152 words)

TASK TWO: Who is your choice for the unsung hero of the S42 playoffs up to this point? Must be at least 150 words and include at least two statistics in support.

The unsung hero for the Dragons to me was Casey Creller. Creller was a helpful member of the team, putting together 11 points, with 4 goals and 7 assists. He had a plus minus of 6, 45 hits, and 24 shot blocks for the team. He also had 4 game winning goals, providing clutch shots that help the team win games. He was also a great member of the power play, with 3 goals and 1 assist while the team was up a man. By providing these plays he was able to help the team when it matters and when you should be getting goals, and while he did also add a lot of penalty time to the team with 20 (although nothing compares to Otis Driftwood’s 50 minutes) he was a key contributor for the Dragons title run. Creller was able to provide key plays and key goals for the team in order to help them win their second championship since Season 40. (164 words)

TASK SEVEN: Which young player on each team will have (or, if you're doing this later, has had) the biggest impact in the Cup finals, and why? Must mention at least one player S38 or younger per team. Must be at least 150 words.

Otis B. Driftwood had a huge impact on the series, but not for the reason you want to see, unless you like fighting and penalties. Driftwood had 25 penalty minutes in the finals, and really didn’t contribute much else to the team’s chances. Yes, he stood up for his teammates but 25 minutes of penalties, 19 of which coming in one game, is absolutely unacceptable. To miss 1 period plus an extra 5 minutes in the finals shows horrible discipline for the young Dragons player, and he really needs to get it together if he wants to help the team in a good way. In one game he amassed 19 minutes of penalties, which included a fighting major, a game misconduct, and a hooking penalty. He was ejected from the first game of the finals at 12:48 in the third for his game misconduct after instigating a fight. This is unacceptable, even with being a young player, and you expect more from him going forward. (165 words)

Tasks four and nine were messaged.

Ostap Maksimov will be the young player that makes the difference for the Calgary Dragons and that is because he is a strength where otherwise the Dragons lack strength and that is on the blue line, already one of Calgarys best defenders in the back end of the ice, Ostap was drafted later than many anticipated and that is why he has come with a vengeance to prove everyone who ever doubted him wrong in regards to training regiment and willingness to work through any obstacle.

Artemi Benezin will be the difference maker for the New England Wolfpack, his strong play on both ends of the ice has translated well to the SHL and he has proven he is where he belongs in regards to the level of competition on the ice. Never known as an elite scorer, Benezin has always had an impressive defensive impact on the ice at both the SMJHL and SHL level.

Again as we return to unsung hereos of the S42 playoffs we have to look no further than the young player I swore would make an impact on this series and that is Ostap Maksimov, the young defensemen. Never known as a goal scorer Ostap recorded and understandable zero goals, but instead made his presence felt through his elite passing abilities with 13 assists Ostap quarterbacked the powerplay with 5 assists. Ostap was a leader on the ice and his presence was felt and ultimately that is why I decided he was the best choice for unsung hero, whether it be because he was a leader or he used his elite vision to set up the goal scorers Ostap was always present when they needed him. He will continue being an asset for an aging Calgary team that will hopefully one day need to be rebuilt. Thank you Calgary, please rebuild.

2- Every season it seems like there is one or more unsung heroes of the playoffs. Whether it's the SHL or the SMJHL, you can always find someone who exceeded expectations. This season, I think it's fair to say that fans of all four teams have been those unsung heroes. This was a turbulent season for many teams, in both leagues, and through it all the fans have sat by their teams. They've packed the stands, they've consumed more than their fair share of beer, and they've dealt with extreme rises in ticket prices. But, at the end of the day, they're always there and they'll always be there. So, to you fans, thank you. You guys make this possible. It's because of you we can get overpaid, we can suck, and we can drink at the end of the period. I feel like some beer company should have wrote this for an ad campaign a whole ago.
