Converting the S43 SMJHL Draftees into Pokemon

Welcome one and all to the latest edition of me trying to have fun with the SMJHL draftees and maybe actually make some good comparisons between hockey players and Pokemon. Basically I take the starting attributes, strengths, and weakness of all these recently created players (plus some brand new inclusions for this year that will hopefully help diversify players with otherwise similar builds), use some equations to convert those into something resembling Pokemon base attributes, and then compare that to every Pokemon in existence to find the closest match. For some background, here are the equations that were used last time: Code: Skaters: Last season there were a few comments/complaints that either others had or that have bothered me for awhile. The easiest to address was something that @gittsumm brought up, which was that he had a 72 fighting rating but was not given a fighting type Pokemon. So I created a separate list of only fighting types to use for people that made the bold decision to either create an Enforcer or spend a fair amount of TPE on the Fighting attribute. Somewhat along those lines, I’m realizing now that Checking fits in much better within true Defense as a Pokemon attribute, while our Defense rating is more like Special Defense in Pokemon. So I’m making a swap between those two in the above calculations to see how that goes. Additionally, I’ve always struggled with how to include Face Offs, since really only centers spend points on it so I didn’t want to punish other positions, but I was leaving out a big part of the skillset for that one position. My attempted solution is to use Face Offs as a modifier for both Special Attack (since winning a face off on offense could easily work the same as a pass) and Special Defense (since keeping the puck away from the opponent in the defensive zone is about the same as poking the puck away). The modifier is equal to the Face Off rating (including a Face Off strength if necessary) + 160, then divided by 200. So for a non-center with the base Face Off value of 40, it just doesn’t affect anything at all, but a center with a 60 Face Off rating would get a 10% increase to Special Attack and Special Defense. That may prove to be too impactful or not enough even, but should be a step in the right direction. Another thing that has often bothered me is that there are a lot of cookie cutter builds for forward especially, with similar starting ratings, strengths, and a checking weakness, but clearly there should still be some difference between them. So, I finally figured out a good way (I hope) to use a player’s height and weight in these calculations. First I looked up the average height (73.1 inches) and weight (200.7 lbs) for NHL players last season. Then I divided each player’s height and weight by those values to get something of a unitless value for comparison purposes. Finally, I divided that player’s unitless height and weight to get a single ratio to use. That ratio acts as a modifier for all of a player’s final attributes after the initial calculations shown above. The 3 attributes considered to be more physical (HP, attack, and defense) are divided by the ratio (so a short and stout player would get a bonus to those, since the ratio would be less than 1), while the 3 special attributes (speed, special attack, and special defense) are multiplied by the ratio, benefitting a tall/lanky/lean player at least theoretically. Alright that’s a lot of explanation, so let’s get into the good stuff. I’m going to split everybody up by team so I can talk a little bit about the Pokemon team formed by the SMJHL team’s draftees. ![]() Armada Player Name: Xena Username: @Nickleback_lover69 Position: Center HP: 38 Attack: 44 Defense: 27 Special Attack: 91 Special Defense: 102 Speed: 93 ![]() Name: Jynx HP: 65 Attack: 50 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 115 Special Defense: 95 Speed: 95 Player Name: Dean Colt III Username: @Mac Position: Center HP: 55 Attack: 91 Defense: 51 Special Attack: 44 Special Defense: 53 Speed: 52 ![]() Name: Poochyena HP: 35 Attack: 55 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 30 Special Defense: 30 Speed: 35 Player Name: Maurice Amin Username: @aminobabino Position: Left Wing HP: 56 Attack: 43 Defense: 37 Special Attack: 71 Special Defense: 66 Speed: 67 ![]() Name: Delphox HP: 75 Attack: 69 Defense: 72 Special Attack: 114 Special Defense: 100 Speed: 104 Player Name: Chase McAllister Username: @cosbornballboy Position: Right Wing HP: 42 Attack: 87 Defense: 42 Special Attack: 49 Special Defense: 46 Speed: 62 ![]() Name: Mienfoo HP: 45 Attack: 85 Defense: 50 Special Attack: 55 Special Defense: 50 Speed: 65 Player Name: Stolp Skottson Username: @oskarmeo Position: Defense HP: 53 Attack: 67 Defense: 38 Special Attack: 62 Special Defense: 68 Speed: 62 ![]() Name: Magmar HP: 65 Attack: 95 Defense: 57 Special Attack: 100 Special Defense: 85 Speed: 93 Team Summary: I find it somewhat hilarious that Xena ended up as a Jynx, though that seems to mostly be a case of the height/weight ratio being pushed to its extremes for a 120 pound hockey player. Dean has a crazy high attack rating for most normal situations as a sniping center, and while Poochyena is pretty weak it evolves into the solid Mightyena. Maurice becomes yet another Psychic type in Delphox, providing another strong specially focused mon to the team. CBB/Chase becomes Mienfoo, bringing a physical fighting presence to the team as a scorer and speedster, with the chance to evolve to full potential later on. Finally we have Stolp as Magmar, doubling the team up on Fire types as well but come on, you can’t argue with freaking Magmar. Overall the team needs a few players to level up quickly to become serviceable but also has a strong core three despite the duplicate typings. Also just to note that this doesn’t reflect other players currently on the team or projected activity levels or anything like that, for this or any other SMJHL team. ![]() Raptors Player Name: Jean-Pierre Gay Username: @"JumpierPancakes" Position: Defense (Fighter) HP: 65 Attack: 42 Defense: 68 Special Attack: 50 Special Defense: 55 Speed: 55 ![]() Name: Tyrogue HP: 35 Attack: 35 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 35 Special Defense: 35 Speed: 35 Player Name: AJ Robertson Username: @Nathan_Hall Position: Left Wing HP: 67 Attack: 75 Defense: 41 Special Attack: 56 Special Defense: 56 Speed: 54 ![]() Name: Seaking HP: 80 Attack: 92 Defense: 65 Special Attack: 65 Special Defense: 80 Speed: 68 Player Name: Keegan Angello Username: @Angello Position: Center HP: 56 Attack: 47 Defense: 38 Special Attack: 74 Special Defense: 72 Speed: 65 ![]() Name: Butterfree HP: 60 Attack: 45 Defense: 50 Special Attack: 90 Special Defense: 80 Speed: 70 Player Name: Zach Holt Username: @Toast Position: Defense HP: 59 Attack: 42 Defense: 39 Special Attack: 64 Special Defense: 64 Speed: 62 ![]() Name: Raikou HP: 90 Attack: 85 Defense: 75 Special Attack: 115 Special Defense: 100 Speed: 115 Team Summary: The Raptors ended up with a smaller rookie haul after a trade to bring the legendary Kevin Maddox back to the club, but still add a few mons to the lineup. An early selection was used on Jean-Pierre, who isn’t enforcer but put enough TPE into Fighting for me to consider him as the first test-case for a fighting type only Pokemon. It didn’t do him many favors though, as the fairly well-balanced player resulted in Tyrogue, which is pretty weak on its own though has some nice evolution possibilities. Next up is AJ Robertson as the old-school water type Seaking - not a particularly competitively relevant mon but could certainly be worse. Keegan joins in on the gen 1 fun as Butterfree, assisting teammates by forcing various status effects on the opposing team. Last up is Zach Holt, who appears to be inactive but actually ended up with the best of the bunch Pokemon wise, as the legendary dog Raikou can really hold its own. Overall not too much to be excited about from a Pokemon perspective sadly. ![]() Falcons Player Name: Chuck Crutchfield Username: @"ligma" Position: Defense HP: 43 Attack: 64 Defense: 39 Special Attack: 54 Special Defense: 72 Speed: 53 ![]() Name: Ho-Oh HP: 106 Attack: 130 Defense: 90 Special Attack: 110 Special Defense: 154 Speed: 90 Player Name: Poopity Scoop Username: @Baelor Swift Position: Defense HP: 64 Attack: 44 Defense: 74 Special Attack: 46 Special Defense: 52 Speed: 54 ![]() Name: Vullaby HP: 70 Attack: 55 Defense: 75 Special Attack: 45 Special Defense: 65 Speed: 60 Player Name: Franz Cooper Username: @Coops Position: Right Wing HP: 45 Attack: 75 Defense: 37 Special Attack: 70 Special Defense: 46 Speed: 66 ![]() Name: Azelf HP: 75 Attack: 125 Defense: 70 Special Attack: 125 Special Defense: 70 Speed: 115 Player Name: Ola Wagstrom Username: @StamkosFan Position: Right Wing HP: 61 Attack: 77 Defense: 45 Special Attack: 62 Special Defense: 46 Speed: 56 ![]() Name: Toxicroak HP: 83 Attack: 106 Defense: 65 Special Attack: 86 Special Defense: 65 Speed: 85 Player Name: Waffles Man Username: @Gaston Position: Left Wing HP: 43 Attack: 40 Defense: 40 Special Attack: 66 Special Defense: 68 Speed: 69 ![]() Name: Mismagius HP: 60 Attack: 60 Defense: 60 Special Attack: 105 Special Defense: 105 Speed: 105 Player Name: Tomas Youngholm Username: @Marlaf Position: Center HP: 56 Attack: 61 Defense: 41 Special Attack: 73 Special Defense: 59 Speed: 58 ![]() Name: Houndoom HP: 75 Attack: 90 Defense: 50 Special Attack: 110 Special Defense: 80 Speed: 95 Team Summary: The Falcons and Chuck Crutchfield start things off with a bang, as the legendary bird Ho-Oh comes home to roost for an appropriate team. While the next mon is also a bird, it fails to live up to the success of its predecessor, as Poopity Scoop becomes Vullaby, the dark-flying baby vulture Pokemon, that eventually evolves into the obnoxious to fight against Mandibuzz. Franz adds another legendary to the team as Azelf, while Ola is a bit behind but has nothing to be ashamed about as Toxicroak, a Pokemon that’s a bit lacking on defense but strong everywhere else. We also have Waffles Man as the spooky Ghost-type Mismagius and Tomas as the spectacular Houndoom to round things out. Other Poopity needing an evolution, this is actually a strong, well-balanced team of Pokemon, with a variety of types being represented and some straight power among the group. If this stuff had literally anything to do with team success I would certainly expect it from the Falcons; alas, it does not, but good job anyways. ![]() Raiders Player Name: Rainbow Dash Username: @Eggy216 Position: Left Wing HP: 48 Attack: 64 Defense: 55 Special Attack: 43 Special Defense: 65 Speed: 74 ![]() Name Raticate HP: 55 Attack: 81 Defense: 60 Special Attack: 50 Special Defense: 70 Speed: 97 Player Name: Ray Bork Username: @tweedledunn Position: Defense HP: 38 Attack: 49 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 68 Special Defense: 76 Speed: 55 ![]() Name: Tapu Lele HP: 70 Attack: 85 Defense: 75 Special Attack: 130 Special Defense: 115 Speed: 95 Player Name: Mister McCarty Username: @Mark H Position: Center HP: 45 Attack: 35 Defense: 45 Special Attack: 68 Special Defense: 71 Speed: 69 ![]() Name: Mismagius HP: 60 Attack: 60 Defense: 60 Special Attack: 105 Special Defense: 105 Speed: 105 Player Name: Mikael Choybuk Username: @DollarAndADream Position: Left Wing HP: 56 Attack: 64 Defense: 38 Special Attack: 52 Special Defense: 65 Speed: 81 ![]() Name: Furfrou HP: 75 Attack: 80 Defense: 60 Special Attack: 65 Special Defense: 90 Speed: 102 Player Name: Kristers Dzelme Username: @Didza Position: Center HP: 53 Attack: 46 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 82 Special Defense: 73 Speed: 60 ![]() Name: Butterfree HP: 60 Attack: 45 Defense: 50 Special Attack: 90 Special Defense: 80 Speed: 70 Team Summary: The Raiders have a couple repeats that I won’t waste too much time on, with Mister McCarty as Mismagius and Kristers as Butterfree. With a name like Rainbow Dash it’s sad that I couldn’t cheat the algorithm for a Rapidash, but alas this Ponyta is actually a fat rat. On the other hand, Ray Bork as the recent legendary Tapu Lele is a nice pickup for the team. They also have Mikael Choybuk as Furfrou, which has solid stats but is impossible for me to take seriously as the Poodle-Pokemon; prove me wrong though bro. These guys couldn’t fill out a full Pokemon team and have a few weaker members among them; I don’t give them much of a chance in the made-up competitive SHL Pokemon competition. ![]() Knights Player Name: Shouta Aizawa Username: @"Andybj" Position: Center HP: 46 Attack: 63 Defense: 54 Special Attack: 54 Special Defense: 55 Speed: 48 ![]() Name: Dragonair HP: 61 Attack: 84 Defense: 65 Special Attack: 70 Special Defense: 70 Speed: 70 Player Name: Scott Niedermayer Jr. Username: @GreyGooseVodka Position: Defense HP: 51 Attack: 72 Defense: 36 Special Attack: 61 Special Defense: 66 Speed: 59 ![]() Name: Electivire HP: 75 Attack: 123 Defense: 67 Special Attack: 95 Special Defense: 85 Speed: 95 Player Name: Pavel Volkov Username: @TeaKay Position: Center HP: 52 Attack: 49 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 81 Special Defense: 75 Speed: 65 ![]() Name: Kirlia HP: 38 Attack: 35 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 65 Special Defense: 55 Speed: 50 Player Name: Gints Krumins Username: @Index Position: Center HP: 50 Attack: 78 Defense: 43 Special Attack: 57 Special Defense: 64 Speed: 52 ![]() Name: Komala HP: 65 Attack: 115 Defense: 65 Special Attack: 75 Special Defense: 95 Speed: 65 Player Name: Shawnomir Jagr Username: @StevenStamkos91 Position: Right Wing HP: 59 Attack: 70 Defense: 68 Special Attack: 49 Special Defense: 52 Speed: 50 ![]() Name: Croconaw HP: 65 Attack: 80 Defense: 80 Special Attack: 59 Special Defense: 63 Speed: 58 Player Name: Casey Matz Username: @Trifecta Position: Defense HP: 49 Attack: 39 Defense: 78 Special Attack: 38 Special Defense: 59 Speed: 65 ![]() Name: Cottonee HP: 40 Attack: 27 Defense: 60 Special Attack: 37 Special Defense: 50 Speed: 66 Player Name: Mark McFleury Username: @SidnorMcCrosby Position: Goalie HP: 60 Attack: 57 Defense: 68 Special Attack: 57 Special Defense: 73 Speed: 76 ![]() Name: Finneon HP: 49 Attack: 49 Defense: 56 Special Attack: 49 Special Defense: 61 Speed: 66 Player Name: Spazzy McFee Username: @BC5000 Position: Right Wing HP: 59 Attack: 70 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 61 Special Defense: 64 Speed: 55 ![]() Name: Skiddo HP: 66 Attack: 65 Defense: 48 Special Attack: 62 Special Defense: 57 Speed: 52 Team Summary: Geez these guys drafted a lot of players. My main man andy is the powerful Dragonair; while we all want to be Dragonite right off the bat, there’s nothing wrong with a gen 1 para-wrap combo to lock down the opposition and slowly but surely end up with the W. The evolution of Electabuzz introduced much later than the original is the calling of Scott Niedermayer, hoping to intimidate opponents into shock and paralysis. Pavel needs to evolve from Kirlia to really be useful, though either of Gardevoir or Gallade can do some serious damage. Gints comes out as the cuddly looking Komala, though don’t let appearances fool you; it has much more of an attacking punch than I realized or expected. Shawnomir Jagr has the honor of becoming Croconaw, a solid favorite of mine from Silver Version that can evolve up to Feraligatr in the future and take a bite out of the competition. And yes we’re still going, on to Casey Matz as the defensive wall and status inflictor Cottonee, then Mark McFleury as the only goalie in the class and ending up as a disappointing Finneon, and finally on to Spazzy McFee as the adorable Skiddo. Unfortunately despite the quantity the team is missing a few parts to being truly competitive, though as we have and will see it can be worse. ![]() Militia Player Name: Derek Bohne Username: @wumaduce Position: Center HP: 53 Attack: 75 Defense: 49 Special Attack: 59 Special Defense: 59 Speed: 50 ![]() Name: Dragonite HP: 91 Attack: 134 Defense: 95 Special Attack: 100 Special Defense: 100 Speed: 80 Player Name: Willie Fisterbottom Username: @Ragnar Position: Defense HP: 74 Attack: 44 Defense: 55 Special Attack: 52 Special Defense: 56 Speed: 52 ![]() Name: Giratina (Altered Forme) HP: 150 Attack: 100 Defense: 120 Special Attack: 100 Special Defense: 120 Speed: 90 Player Name: Dinars Briedis Username: @Jetta Position: Defense HP: 65 Attack: 47 Defense: 42 Special Attack: 65 Special Defense: 64 Speed: 58 ![]() Name: Lunatone HP: 90 Attack: 55 Defense: 65 Special Attack: 95 Special Defense: 85 Speed: 70 Player Name: Willy Mack Username: @Mack Position: Left Wing HP: 57 Attack: 75 Defense: 45 Special Attack: 53 Special Defense: 61 Speed: 57 ![]() Name: Seaking HP: 80 Attack: 92 Defense: 65 Special Attack: 65 Special Defense: 80 Speed: 68 Team Summary: Wuma you’re a Dragonite, congrats man! While sadly not as competitive as one would think, it is a total powerhouse in games and really freaking annoying in the gen 1 elite 4. Somehow Willie Fisterbottom manages to improve on Dragonite as Giratina, a legendary Dragon Ghost type; if you don’t think a legendary Dragon Ghost is cool then you can gtfu. The team also has Dinars Briedis as a literal moon, Lunatone, and a repeat offender with Willy Mack as Seaking. They don’t have a full 6 Pokemon team but the mons they do have can do some serious work, as they don’t have any puny unevolved ones or anything like that. Darkhorse candidate for best team. ![]() Scarecrows Player Name: Bernard Freeman Username: @Allen Position: Right Wing HP: 57 Attack: 80 Defense: 40 Special Attack: 57 Special Defense: 54 Speed: 57 ![]() Name: Luxio HP: 60 Attack: 85 Defense: 49 Special Attack: 60 Special Defense: 49 Speed: 60 Player Name: Antonio Calculon Username: @pazuzu15 Position: Defense HP: 45 Attack: 40 Defense: 44 Special Attack: 58 Special Defense: 66 Speed: 53 ![]() Name: Latias HP: 80 Attack: 80 Defense: 90 Special Attack: 110 Special Defense: 130 Speed: 110 Player Name: Jerry Larry Username: @twerkin4jesus Position: Left Wing HP: 48 Attack: 65 Defense: 35 Special Attack: 64 Special Defense: 75 Speed: 62 ![]() Name: Virizion HP: 91 Attack: 90 Defense: 72 Special Attack: 90 Special Defense: 129 Speed: 108 Player Name: Airi Yamaguchi Username: @DeathClutch19 Position: Defense HP: 50 Attack: 35 Defense: 33 Special Attack: 74 Special Defense: 77 Speed: 68 ![]() Name: Mismagius HP: 60 Attack: 60 Defense: 60 Special Attack: 105 Special Defense: 105 Speed: 105 Player Name: Roger Baston Username: @yoye Position: Center HP: 57 Attack: 66 Defense: 40 Special Attack: 70 Special Defense: 58 Speed: 53 ![]() Name: Torchic HP: 45 Attack: 60 Defense: 40 Special Attack: 70 Special Defense: 50 Speed: 45 Player Name: Brock Nuck Username: @NUCK Position: Right Wing HP: 55 Attack: 71 Defense: 51 Special Attack: 51 Special Defense: 55 Speed: 53 ![]() Name: Patrat HP: 45 Attack: 55 Defense: 39 Special Attack: 35 Special Defense: 39 Speed: 42 Team Summary: Bernard Freeman kicks things off as Luxio, which isn’t quite as lit as its evolution Luxray but again things could be worse. Next up is Antonio Calculon, star of “All My Circuits” and as it turns out a solid legendary Pokemon, Latias, providing impressive Special Attack/Defense to the team. Jerry Larry is another, somewhat unheralded legendary called Virizion, which brings along a solid all-around game other than that poor defensive stat. Airi Yamaguchi is reprising the Mismagius role, while Roger Baston could someday soar as a Blaziken but is currently stuck as a cute little Torchic. Rounding things out is Brock Nuck as Patrat, the ugly knockoff Rattata introduced in the most recent Pokemon generation. This group has 3 tough Pokemon to try and hold down the fort but the rest of the group would basically just be cannon fodder until they evolve. ![]() Whalers Player Name: Shaquille Derisraka Username: @Kevin Juice Bieksa Position: Center HP: 41 Attack: 61 Defense: 54 Special Attack: 57 Special Defense: 58 Speed: 66 ![]() Name: Medicham (Mega Medicham) HP: 60 Attack: 100 Defense: 85 Special Attack: 80 Special Defense: 85 Speed: 100 Player Name: Barret McCarthy Username: @Inf1d3l Position: Defense HP: 74 Attack: 50 Defense: 53 Special Attack: 59 Special Defense: 58 Speed: 40 ![]() Name: Sealeo HP: 90 Attack: 60 Defense: 70 Special Attack: 75 Special Defense: 70 Speed: 45 Player Name: Lillie Jacobs Username: @Benson Position: Right Wing (Fighter) HP: 74 Attack: 60 Defense: 67 Special Attack: 34 Special Defense: 38 Speed: 40 ![]() Name: Pancham HP: 67 Attack: 82 Defense: 62 Special Attack: 46 Special Defense: 48 Speed: 43 Player Name: Tauras Karazija Username: @ontanis Position: Defense HP: 56 Attack: 75 Defense: 41 Special Attack: 55 Special Defense: 65 Speed: 58 ![]() Name: Seaking HP: 80 Attack: 92 Defense: 65 Special Attack: 65 Special Defense: 80 Speed: 68 Team Summary: After a ton of people ended up as Mega Salamence last season it’s nice that we have our one and only Mega at all here; Shaquille Derisraka as Mega Medicham, bringing a speedy scoring threat to the team and a speedy attacking threat to the Pokemon team. Barret McCarthy has a cool endurance heavy build that led to a high HP stat, resulting in a transformation into Sealeo, though this is another case where an evolution (into Walrein) would make a big difference. Another of our special fighting type comparisons for a player that’s always ready to drop the gloves goes to Lillie Jacobs; Pancham itself isn’t particularly scary but after evolving into the Dark-Fighting Pangoro it kicks serious butt. Last but not least we have Tauras “I should’ve cheated and given you Tauros” Karazija, who continues the proud traditional of becoming a Seaking. Despite some potential power among the team they also double up on both Fighting and Water types; not one of our strongest competitors Wrap-Up: Hopefully at least a couple people enjoyed all that; it’s pretty fun to write and to learn about the incoming SMJHL class in a somewhat roundabout way. Please don’t take it personally if your player ended up with a lame Pokemon comparison like Patrat; this has pretty much nothing to do with how good or bad your starting build is and is just a fun experiment. I hope you all, from Tyrogue to Giratina and everyone in between, make it to the SHL someday and show that everyone is a legendary. Anyways that’s enough for me, as always feel free to comment/critique/whatever else feels right at the time. ![]() Registered S36, S38 Challenge Cup Champion ![]() Registered Hippoman ![]() Registered Posting Freak ![]() Registered Posting Freak ![]() Registered Hippoman 09-06-2018, 09:14 AMMavfatha Wrote:09-06-2018, 09:12 AMMayuu Wrote: Amazing work as always, I've been waiting for this post! that would be awesome, but a butt load of work I imagine! but then again, $$$ RETIRED ![]() Registered Senior Member ![]() Registered S39 Challenge Cup Champion ![]() Registered Member ![]() Registered Posting Freak ![]() Registered Member ![]() Registered Posting Freak |
