Falcons Detroit Falcons 5 v Whalers Vancouver Whalers 2
Shots: Detroit 35 to Vancouver 16

Three Stars:

  1. Chuck Crutchfield Falcons
  2. Hippo Passamus Falcons
  3. Jack Kennedy Whalers
In a blowout win for the Detroit Falcons, the game was almost all but decided after the first period. After going up 4-0 in the first on the back of some solid powerplay production, Detroit managed to keep the pressure up in the 2nd and 3rd periods and play a solid defensive game to hold onto the W. Through stingy defense and not allowing more than 8 shots in any given period, the Falcons cruised to victory.

1st Period

The Whalers actually got the first powerplay opportunity in the game, off rookie stud Poopity Scoop going off for slashing. However, it wouldn't be until almost the 4 minute mark when Lillie Jacobs got a double minor on slashing for the Whalers that the Falcons would take to the ice. As the first minor was about to expire, an unusual assortment of PP players were left on the ice for the Whalers. Dank Boija would hit Tauras Karazija, freeing the puck for Ola Wagstrom and Franz Cooper to create some open space for their fellow rookie Crutch Crutchfield. Crutchfield nails the shot and its 1-0.

Just after the 16 minute mark of the first period and its still 1-0 Detroit, although the pressure has been all Falcons. Waffles Man, playing on the 4th line, gets the puck after Pingy Pingu wins a faceoff in the neutral zone. Despite getting shoved off the puck by Whalers 3rd pair defenseman Barret McCarthy, Waffles manages to grab the loose puck and streaks in for a nifty goal. 2-0 Falcons.

Only a minute later, things continue to fall off the rails for Vancouver as David Kastrba gets called for high-sticking. Despite winning the draw, Soren Kierkegaard is shoved off the puck by Tobias Viklund. After setting up in the offensive zone, Eero Makinen misses the net but the bounce goes right to Papa Huligans! It's in! 3-0 Detroit.

And the period isn't over yet ... 8 seconds after the goal, David Kastrba is once again called for high-sticking. A real chip on Kastrba's shoulder this game and the refs aren't having it. A couple of saves and faceoff wins later and the pressure is mounting in the Whaler's zone. Tig Murphy shoots from the point, and its blocked in front of the net by Buck Maverick. However the puck bounces right back to Wolfhard Richter who fills the gaping hole after Leitner bit on the Tig shot. 4-0 Detroit and the period is over, thankfully for the Whalers.

2nd Period

After the Falcons opened the period with pressure in the Whalers zone, Detroit's 4th line ices the puck and remains on the ice against Vancouver's 3rd line. Taking advantage of the matchup, Shaquille Derisraka wins the faceoff against Pingy Pingu and Jack Kennedy nails a slick wristshot right off the draw. 4-1 and the Whalers on the board!

Just after the halfway mark of the second period, Detroit strikes back. After losing a draw in their own zone, the play gets stuck in the neutral zone. That is until Hippo Passamus reel takes a nice feed from Marc Palicka to snip what looks like the nail in the Whalers' coffin. 5-1 Detroit!

That goal seems to light a fire under the Whalers and suddenly its all Vancouver. David Kastrba, attempting some redemption for first period penalty woes, is all over the puck. At 12:38 of the second, he finds twine after a nice pass off the hot stick of Jack Kennedy. 5-2 and there's still lots of hockey left to play!

3rd Period

The third is very quiet. Neither team gets more than ten shots and compared to the penalty bonanza of the first two periods, there's only two minors doled out in the final 20. With nothing happening, the score stays the same and Detroit manages a confident and special-team focused 5-2 victory.

3 Stars of the Game

1. Chuck Crutchfield - Detroit Falcons - 1 Goal, 2 Assists, 3 Points
Chuck had a fantastic game and that's awesome to see from such a young and talented defenseman rising up in the league next to Poopity Scoop. He scored the opening goal which also happened to be his first goal in fact and he tallied in another 2 assists to help out with the team's scoring effort this game. Just a solid game from the kid and you really couldn't be asking for much more as a player adjusting to the older and more physical league that is the SMJHL.

2. Hippo Passamus - Detroit Falcons - 1 Goal, 1 Point
Hippo claims the 2nd star of the game which actually surprises me as well. He played pretty well scoring the 5th goal of the game, having 4 shots and 2 hits during the game. He defintely had quite a few chances during the game and led a lot of offensive rushes though so I can see why they decided to award Hippo with the 2nd star.

3. Jack Kennedy - Vancouver Whalers - 1 Goal, 1 Assist, 2 Points
Jack Kennedy takes the 3rd star of the game for the losing Whalers today potting in a goal and an assist for the Whalers only 2 goals during the game. He tried his best in a losing effort that is team really seemed out of. He scored the first goal off of a faceoff win by Shaq and also was the primary assist to a sick pass to David Kastrba to bring the lead back to 3. He wasn't able to post the W but he was able to get the 3rd star of the game

Bruiser of the Game

While many modern players are moving away from physicality, some individuals still bring grit and edge to the ice. Vancouver Whalers right winger David Kastrba is tonight's bruiser of the game, as he had the most hits of any players on either side with 4. His hits were hard and brutal enough to earn him 4 penalty minutes, but on top of the physicality, he also registered a goal and a +2 rating. He was given only 9:27 in ice time on the 3rd line, but he certainly made it count. He received a mere 2 seconds of penalty killing time, but his grinding style would be perfect for penalty killing units.
