Anaheim Outlaws (0-0-0) vs. Detroit Falcons (0-0-0)

DETROIT, MICHIGAN -- For the first time in many years, the Anaheim Outlaws were suited up for a SMJHL game. To open their S45 campaign, the team composed of mostly rookies and a few stragglers from other SMJHL teams faced off against the Detroit Falcons. In spite of a valiant effort matching the shot totals of the home team, the Outlaws struggled to find a rhythm on the defensive side of the puck and lost the game, 5-2.

First Period
Kit Smeb led off the scoring for Detroit just six minutes into the game. The puck was delivered to him straight after the faceoff (which was set up by a Hippo Passamus shot and a huge glove save by Mike Hunt). After completely missing the net, Smeb grabbed his own rebound and put it home to break the scoreless tie. Just six minutes later, Uvis Zommers put himself in the record books by registering the first penalty for the Anaheim Outlaws in a very long time. Like serendipitous clockwork, it seemed, Hippo Passamus scored a powerplay goal in the final 30 seconds of the penalty kill. Starting out 0-1 all time on the penalty kill didn't sit well with the Outlaws, so Keenan Angelo got a puck past Cedric Robinson to record the Outlaws' first goal of the season. Here's the game call:

An early 2-0 lead for Detroit ... and I know Anaheim fans of old out there are hoping for now it just doesn't get much worse ... the puck is dumped back to Detroit's goalie and he starts it up the ice ... the pass is to Palic--ooh, he mishandles it! Fujikawa is there ... steals the puck! Angelo's wide open, does he see him? Yes, there's the pass! Angelo's all alone! SLAPSHOT RIGHT IN FRONT--Goal Goal SCOOOOOOOORES!!!! Goal Goal Keenan Angelo takes the feed from Fujikawa and that was the momentum swing the Outlaws were absolutely desperate for. It's now 2-1, and we have a game!

Second Period
The second 20 minutes saw very little action back and forth - only 20 shots combined (9 for ANA and 11 for DET). Although that averages out to 1 per minute, much of the play was in the neutral zone, missing passes or missing the net completely if a team did actually get to one side. Seeing that there was no action going on, Anthony Banthony decided to give the Falcons another chance on the powerplay with a solid holding penalty. The Falcons quickly obliged, and Wolfhard Richter scored a minute and a half into the man advantage. Raino Kyllonen recorded his 2nd assist of the game. After 40 minutes of play, the Falcons had a 2-goal advantage.

Third Period
In the third period, it was abundantly clear that the Falcons were not confident in their 2-goal lead; they pushed the puck right out of the gate. Just a minute into the third, David Fantobens collected a pass from Hippo Passamus on an amazing set piece by the Falcons to extend the lead to 3. Just 49 seconds later, the rout was on:

Now a 3-goal game the Falcons might have this one ... but they aren't letting up just yet ... Zvejnieks takes the puck through the neutral zone for Detroit ... passes cleanly to Donnie Dicks ... Dicks looks left -- FIRES A SHOT -- Saaaved by Hunt, but a rebound out in front! Richter sweeps in front of the net ... he's got the rebound! Goes around the goal, finds Cooper in front - SHOT! Goal Goal SCOOOOOOOOORES!!! Goal Goal Franz Cooper with the one-timer from that amazing feed by Richter. Hunt was left out to dry and Cody Black is not happy about that sequence from Anaheim ... the former All-SHL defenseman is not seeing pro-caliber defense out there right now.

Shortly after Cody Black was restrained from his own players, the Outlaws actually put in a powerplay goal of their own. However, it was too little, too late, and the Outlaws dropped their first game of the season to Detroit, 5-2.

Final Score
Falcons Detroit Falcons - 5
Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws - 2

Three Stars
1 - Hippo Passamus Falcons 1G, 1A, 5 shots
2 - Wolfhard Richter Falcons 1G, 1A
3 - David Fantobens Falcons 1G, 6 shots, 2 hits, 2/3 faceoffs

Comment #1:
We have an interview with Outlaws GM and headcoach Cody Black:

Your first game of the season ended with a 2-5 loss against the Detroit Falcons. Are you surprised?

I'm not surprised, we are a brand new team and we are all learning how everything goes together here. I would have liked a closer game but that will come with time and practice.

After 2 periods you were behind 1-3. You got scored on twice in the first 2 minutes of the third period. What went wrong?

I think we came out flat and our young players were not equal to the task of handling a veteran team with some guys who have played together a few seasons.

Will we see any line changes for the next game?

I am always looking to make changes and help the team. It's not just the players who are learning, I have to constantly evaluate who fits where and what gives us the best chance at success.

Observations:
- Five players from three lines scored the five goals for Detroit. The team is very balanced and doesn't have a weak line. This team definitely is a contender for going far this season, they do even have a legitimate shot at the four star cup.
- The Outlaws will have a hard season, being an expansion team. But they are the stronger of the two new teams and might even be able to keep up with a couple of established teams. They also do have two active rookie goalies. In two season they might have the strongest goalie duo of the league.

Comment # 1 (Unsung Hero):

Although never appearing on the score sheet, Stolp Skottson played very well. Despite playing on the 2nd pairing he was 2nd for ice time for the Detroit Falcons playing 21 minutes and 4 seconds. Skottson led the Falcons on penalty kill time with 3 minutes and 13 seconds. Skottson was on the ice for 2 even strength goals and also lead his team in blocked shots with 2. Not stopping there Skottson intercepted 15 passes during the game, and made 16 successful passes. Skottson had an overall quiet game and showed defensive poise early in the season.

Comment #2 (Special Teams/Turning Point):

Special teams were a big factor in this game as the Detroit Falcons scored 2 powerplay goals on 4 attempts, potting there first PPG of the game to make it 2-0 halfway through the first. Uvis Zoomers took a 2 minute hooking after turning over the puck to Wolfhard Richter at 12:07 in the first. The Outlaws killed the majority of the penalty until the Falcons iced the puck on a powerplay. A faceoff in the Falcons zone was won to Passamus, who took the puck through the neutral zone and over the blue line taking a hard shot at the pads which led to a rebound shot by Eero Makinen which was again saved by Mike Hunt leading to another rebound with Passamus finally converting to make it 2-0 Falcons.

Comment # 3 (Rookie Spotlight):

8 players on the Falcons got on the scoresheet and rookie Raino Kyllonen also got in on the action with 2 assists. Kyllonen also had a faceoff % of 54.5. In fact these two skills directly lead to the first goal of the game. After an early freezing by Mike Hunt around 6 minutes in Kyllonen won a faceoff against Vital Kravtsov to Kit Smeb who took a shot which missed but converted on the 2nd try. Kyllonen didn't stop there. Around 12 minutes into the 2nd Kyllonen made a beautiful interception in the neutral zone, skated through the blue line and made a pass to Wolfhard Richter who converted to make it 3-1. It's safe to say Kyllonene could have been one of the three stars.

My player on the spotlight today is Mathias Seger of the Anaheim Outlaws. Mathias Seger is a two-way defenseman from Switzerland, who was drafted in last season draft, nevertheless the rookie is already getting top line minutes on the first defense pair alongside sophomore defender Aaron Freakin Rome.In this game, Seger clocked an impressive 22:41 minutes played, highest of all of the team. He finished with an even plus-minus and 3 blocked shots. Officially he had 0 shots, but what the stats don't say is that he shot 4 times, unlucky all missed the net. All in all a decent performance.

3 Stars of the Game

1 - Hippo Passamus (DET) - 1G, 1A, 2P, +1, 0PIM - Passamus was everywhere tonight, it almost seemed like his feet never left the ice, being trusted by his coach to play in all situations. He certainly had no off season rust as evidenced by his stat line and his off the charts endurance during this game.

2 - Wolfhard Richter (DET) - 1G, 1A, 2P, +1, 0PIM - Richter, just like Passamus also never seemed to leave the ice. Leading his team in ice time, Richter didn't shoot often, but made the most of his 2 shots by potting what would eventually be the game winner.

3 - David Fantobens (DET) - 1G, 0A, 1P, +1, 0PIM - David played on the opposite wing of Passamus and managed to impress in his first game of the season. Any time the puck was on his stick he was threat to shoot and tickled the twine once with his bullet of a shot.

TSN Turning Point

The turning point of this game came very early, only 6:49 into the 1st period when Kit Smeb notched his first career goal and the Falcons first goal of the season. The Outlaws looked to come out and make a statement in their first game back in the SMJHL, but the ended up being made a statement of instead. That first goal took all the wind out of their sails and allowed the crowd to push themselves into it and get in the head of the expansion team. There was no looking back from that moment on as the Falcons would find themselves in the win column after the first game of the season.

Worst Player of the Game

Anthony Banthony (VAN) - 0G, 0A, 0P, -2, 2PIM - Banthony only had one positive his whole game, and that was the 1 shot he managed to block. Other then that he was completely useless for the rest of the game. Being relied on heavily in his defensive role, he managed to let his team down as he allowed players to skate by him, couldn't break up plays and wasn't able to make a breakout pass to save his life. On top of all of that, he managed to get a penalty which allowed Detroit to score what would turn out to be the game winning goal. With all of this, he gets the honor of worst player of the game.

Game 2 Simweek 1 Outlaws @ Falcons
In the second game of the season Mike Hunt (Anaheim) and Cedric Robinson (Detroit) was the goaltender matchup in Detroit. Cedric Robinson clearly won this Match against Mike Hunt with a Sv% by 0,935 to 0,853 and claimed his first W of his career.  Mike hunt only could save 29 shots of the 34 shots he faced. At the End the Falcons won this Game 5-2. Cedric Robinson got a minor league penalty because delay of game which was served by Nat Emerson. In this Powerplay (Penalty Kill) the Anaheim Outlaws scored their second goal and last goal of the night.

Aiding Detroit in this victory was their ability to more evenly distribute their ice time across all their players. Anaheim iced a total of 6 players who exceeded playing more than 20 minutes as compared to Detroit who only had 4 players exceed 20 minutes of ice time. Looking over the total minutes played we can see that Detroit iced 7 of their players between 15-20 minutes where as Anaheim only had 4 players fall into that same category. Finally with Anaheim icing a total of 6 players under 15 minutes to Detroits 5 we can see how Detroit iced more of it's players in that secondary time slot between 15-20 minutes.

With Penalties on both sides we can see that both teams are going to have to tighten the belt if they want to remain competitive for the rest of the season. 4 penalties handed out to each side and a total of 3 goals distributed you can see how special teams were clearly important in this match. While Detroit made the most out of their time on the power play it could easily have gone the otherway. Goaltenders each gave their teams a chance to win but with 4 opportunities on each side it was too many opportunities to capitilize.

Comment 1:

Outlaw Spotlight: Hiro Fujikawa - Left Wing
On the inaugural game for the Anaheim Outlaws, the shining star was the recently appointed team captain Hiro Fujikawa. Fujikawa scored an assist on Keegan Angelo's first period goal and stayed at a respectable plus/minus of +1 for the game. Fujikawa lead the Outlaws in Time on Ice with 21 Minutes and 37 Seconds. When called into the faceoff circle, Fujikawa won 2 of 3 draws. Fujikawa is excelling in his new leadership role and leading by example. Sadly Hiro was unable to find the back of the net with 4 shots for the night. We hope to see Fujikawa excel in his new team and role.

Comment #2:

Disappointing Start for Expansion Team:
With the recent revival of the Anaheim Outlaws, fans have been clambering to watch the once dead franchise rise from the ashes. The Outlaws would travel across the country to Detroit, Michigan for their first game with many fans in tow. New GM Dangles has inspired confidence in the fanbase with an impressive draft and rookie class hungry for victory. Sadly the outing left fans wanting as the Outlaws fell 2-5 against the Falcons. The team declined to comment on the loss and stated that they are only looking forward. What the season will bring for the Outlaws is still to be seen, but with a young core it is bound to be a roller-coaster.

Comment #3:

Silver-Lined Saloon:

With their first loss of the season let's look at areas the Outlaws shined in their first outting. The Outlaws won 49 faceoffs to the Falcon's 37. Keeping control of the puck will help scoring increase across the board. Anaheim also had a higher blocked shots with 10. Preventing quality scoring chances will help the Outlaws keep a lock on the opponents offense. Goalie Mike Hunt made an impressive Debut stopping 29 shots. With a bit more control in his game, Hunt will definitely start stealing games from the opposition. The Outlaws also kept a close game in penalty minutes tying Detroit with 8. Once the team gets a feel for each other they will surely tighten up their play.

Comment #1: The Shots (114 words)
This game was all about the Detroit Falcons initial efficiency straight out of the gate. They totally outshot their opponent, the Anaheim Outlaws, in the first period with 14 shots against 5 and started off with an early 2-0 lead. The shots evened out to 34-31 in the end with the Outlaws having an impressive 17-9 in the third period. But that wasn't enough when they were only able to put one of those shots in the net. To be able to win games you need to score. And to score you need to shoot. The Outlaws need to be more efficient if they want to make a difference in these kinds of games.

Comment #2: Three Stars (113 words)
1. Hippo Passamus
As Detroits first line right winger he carried his team through this game with one Power Play goal in five shots and also one assist.
2. Wolfhard Richter
One more Falcons player with one goal and one assist. Add over 20 minutes of ice time to that and what a day for this first pair Falcons defenseman. His goal was also on the Power Play, a field where the Falcons should continue to be strong.
3. David Fantobens
Another first line forward for Detroit among the three stars, this time on the left wing. Yet another goal on this producing line and the future is looking bright for the Falcons.

Comment #3: Goalie Battle (103 words)
Like with all other things in this game, Cedric Robinson and the Detroit Falcons came out on top big time. With 29 saves in 31 shots and a save percentage of 0.935% it wasn't difficult to beat the Outlaws goalie Mike Hunt who had to let up five goals in total tonight. The huge Austrian rocking the number 69 on his back had a difficult game in the net and didn't get much help from his defenders, something that is crucial to get through 60 minutes. Despite letting up five goals the coach left him in the game to fight until the end.

The Smeb Report:

Kit Smeb came out guns a blazing in this one, scoring the falcons first goal of the game, his first career goal, and the falcons first goal of the season. Smeb really set the bar for his season with this goal here as he is hoping to be one of the leagues elite snipers for years to come. An incredible wrister off of a good pass by rookie linemate Raino Kyllonen, you wouldnt think a person as small as kit smeb would be able to fire such a rocket, but it went fast enough to get passed the goalies glove and put the falcons up 1-0 ultimately giving them the momentum tow in the game.

The three bad stars:

3. Anthony Banthony
Banthony was a -2 in this game, good for tied for the worst on his team. Banthony also took a holding penalty, which luckily for him didnt result in his team giving up a goal, but the rest of his play was lackuluster unfortunately, with 2 hits and a shot blocked, he was still a contributer thus making him the 3rd bad star

2. Uvis Zommers
Zommers had an even +/- in this game so at least he was on the ice while his team did well, but he got the penalty which ultimately but the falcons up 2-0 and made the game much harder to play for the outlaws, giving him the 2nd bad star.

1. Mike HUnt

Young stud goalie hunt didnt have a great game by his standards here, letting in 5 goals on 34 shots he was getting peppered all game, but didnt have to let in 5 goals. A few werent his fault like the godly snipe from kit smeb, but a couple softies land him as the number one bad star of this game.

Comment #1 (Offensive firepower) 103 words

Detroit lights it up offensively in their first game of the season, banging in 5 goals on Mike Hunt. With 34 shots on net in this first game we have yet to see if that will set the tone for the season or be a fluke lucky game for Detroit. What we do know is that this team can put up enough goals to offset a bad defense; but they don't have to since the defense was great as well. With a couple powerplay goals this game, watch out for Detroit on the special teams don't want to be caught shorthanded against them!

Comment #2 (Cedric Robinson) 106 words

What a game for this returning veteran goaltender. Only 2 goals against on 31 shots! That puts him at a .935 sv% to start the season with a huge win. As the season goes on the big question will be can Cedric Robinson continue to impress and lead his team to victories. Cedric has been known as the quiet type, but if performances like this keep up he will have to be swatting away the media interview crews. Great team defense kept opportunities limited luckily, so the lack of breakaways will be something Cedric Robinson continues to pray for. What a game!

Looking at the 3rd star of the game we have David Fantobens, contributing to his team's win with a huge goal while playing on the top line. Can he continue to keep it up for Detroit will be a big question mark. The 2nd star went to Wolfhard Richter, who put up a marvelous 2 points! Coming in at the clutch to help pile on the goals in this blowout win. 1st star went to Hippo Passamus, the linemate of David. We can smell the chemistry brewing, as this line led the team in plus minus and will hope to do so come the next game.

Back and forth shooting. Comment 1 Tonight Anaheim outlaws and Detroit Falcons went all in on the shooting contest trying to out shoot each other through the three periods. Detroit barely came out on top with 34 shots versus Anaheims 31. But shots in goal does not win you games! In this case it might have though for Detroit scoring five goals in those 34 shots versus Anaheim just scoring 2. In the third perion Anaheim started ti feel the pressure of being down 3-1 so they got on a shooting frenzy putting 17 shots on Detroit goalie Cedric Robinson with just one passing the goal line. The Falcons managed to hold off Anaheim and secured the leed with 2 more goals in the third to win the game.

League mvp comment 2

Is Hippo Passamus on rout for the MVP of the season? Tonight he looked the part with a goal and an assist he played like he was a dictator deciding what will happen when he was on the ice. This 5ft 6in two way forward weighing in at 290 lbs is what you find in the dictionary when looking up swedish meetball. Low point of gravity is something you think of when you see this extraordinary person and you just know that it does not mather how much you try and get this guy of the puck it just wont happen. If you had me pick the league MVP today it's clear as a sunny day that it is Hippo Passamus that is the undisputed winner.

Comment 3

Does Detroit Falcons have two Award candidates? It's just the start of the season and detriit is showing of some star level of play both as a team and on the individual plain. Tom Corcoran Trophy is awarded to the top goalie in the SMJHL and that might just be Detroit's Cedric Robinson, puting up a magnificent 93.5 save % he sure is on rout to take home this award. He is 6ft 7in and 240lbs heavy, with that frame he easily fills out the net to stop pucks with his amazing positioning. With Cedric Robinson in net and Hippo Passamus leding the offense there is just no way i can not say that Detroit is a strong front runner to win the championship and dominating the award nominations when the season comes to an end.

Luffy's 3 Stars for the losing team

1st Star 1st comment
Keegan Angelo - One of the few Outlaws who was positive on the day and was pretty dominate in a huge loss. Winning more than half (62%) of his faceoffs and crushing almost 22 minutes of ice time this horse was basically everywhere and tried to carry the outlaws on his back the entire game. He had one of the only two goals the outlaws could seem to manage. In a bleak game for the outlaws this young man shined.

2nd Star 2nd comment
Hiro Fujikawa - Our first stars linemate. This line was the only one that showed up for the outlaws tonight and it showed in the score sheet. He was also positive on the night and even had to come in for some faceoffs which he won most of them as a winger. We can see that this line played most of the night but whenever they were off the ice the other outlaws couldnt seem to keep the puck out of the net. The first and second star had 1/3rd of the teams shots and that just shows how the outlaws night went.

3rd Star
3rd comment
Mathias Seger - The workhorse of the team with almost 23 minutes played and 3 blocked shots this man somehow stayed even in this lopsided tilt. He tried his best to keep his team in it and even blocked 3 shots but couldn't make up for the rest of the teams lackluster play. The outlaws need more than one line to be contributing and able to play both sides of the puck like our third star Seger.

Welcome to the SMJHL. That was the message early and often throughout the night from the Falcons as they laid into the Outlaws hard. Out shooting the Outlaws only by 3 goals, but ending the night with 3 more goals, It is clear that the Outlaws are still working to figure things out , even as the season starts up. Both Goalies really tried their best to make a difference, but it was Hunt who took battle. In part to a failed clearing attempt by Robinson, which cost his team a penalty. The score seemed closer than the result on the ice. Hunt seemed closed off and ready to take on the world, while Robinson seemed to have some early season nerves. It'll be interesting to see how that pans out for the rest of the season.
