Kelowna Knights - Colorado Raptors
Game #141

Knights - Raptors 2-5

At InGEN Arena in Denver Colorado, a sell-out crowd of 17,420 were present to see the Colorado Raptors face off against the Kelowna Knights. The two teams are only a few points apart, so this promises to be an exciting game.

First period
From the first puck drop the Kelowna Knights were the more aggressive team. The Knights were really crashing the net, but Yuri Ushakov was able to fend everything off. At 12:39 Dick Clapper of the Knights dangled himself past Eric Vanderberg with a nice toe-drag move, only to see his shot saved by Ushakov. This move deserved better. Later in the period at 16:30 Justin Siddals finds the net with a wrist shot going five hole on Yuri Ushakov. He was assisted by Sanyi Kocsis and Nickolaus Klaus. It was Klaus’ 28th league leading assist of the season.

Second period
The second period saw a much better Colorado Raptors team coming out of the locker room. Though the Knights were the first to get on the board yet again. Zach Laliberte assisted by Big Fudge and Justin Siddals scored at 3:54. Straight from a face off win from Siddals the puck found its way to Big Fudge who passed it towards Laliberte who slapped it behind Ushakov. The Raptors were getting better and better and really started to push the net of Vivian Leblanc. At 6:46 Parker Smeb scored on a two on one to put the Raptors on the board. A minute 51 past the halfway mark in the second period Konstantin Voloshin deflected a shot from Lillie Jacobs to tie the game. Vivian Leblanc had no chance seeing that coming, her vision was being blocked by multiple people.

Knights - Raptors 1-2

Shots on goal
Knights 7
Raptors 9

Penalties
Knights
Guy Zheng - Hooking (minor)

Third period
The Colorado Raptors came out steaming from the locker room. Scoring two goals only 20 seconds apart. Konstantin Voloshin scored at 2:06 and Lillie Jacobs at 2:26 to give the Raptors a two goal lead at the start of the third period. The energy the Kelowna Knights brought to the game in the first period was completely gone and the Raptors were all over the ice. At this moment Vivian Leblanc was pulled and replaced by Low Temp. At 5:42 the game was pretty much over when Parker Smeb also scored his second of the game to bring the score to 2-5 in favor of the Raptors. In the final minutes of the game the Knights tried to play all or nothing, but it resulted in nothing. A devastating loss for the Knights and two valuable points won by the Raptors to fight for a top six seed spot.

Welcome to tonight's Arbys™ Three Stars for this match between the Kelowna Knights and the Colorado Raptors.

Arbys First Star - Konstantin Voloshin Raptors

Your First Star was any choice for this game, Voloshin, the Raptors' second line centre. Voloshin netted two goals for the Raptors, the first being the game-tying goal, and then the goal which put them into the lead and on the road to a 5-2 victory. His +/- was also a 2, showing his usefulness for the Colorado team

Arbys Second Star - Lillie Jacobs Raptors

The second match of the game goes to second line right winger Lillie Jacobs. The winger had his own 2 point game, starting with the primary assist on the Voloshin goal which tied the game, and then with a goal of his own in the 3rd, which put Colorado into a 4-2 lead. He also managed to maintain a +/- of 2 in an impressive display.

Arbys Third Star - Parker Smeb Raptors

Your final star of the game goes to one of the Smeb brothers, Parker. Smeb had a 2 goal night, the first being Colorado's first goal of the game which lead to a further 4 unanswered goals. His second was the final, if not already hammered nail in the coffin against Kelowna. These goals as well as his flawless performance on the face offs makes him the third star for this game.

Comment 1:
Jean-Pierre Gay is not someone who is known for his offensive prowess. Known more for his solid reliable defensive game and ability to eat lots of minutes during the game and against the opponents top players. This game however was not just a good game for the Raptors over all offensively but for Jean-Pierre Gay. Gay recorded a goal and an assist this game to be tied to lead the raptors in this game in points along with his +/- of 2 while still maintaining his solid defensive game with 1 hit and 1 shot blocked along with playing the 2nd most minutes for his team at 19:54.

Comment 2:
Everyone has rough games and this was definitely one of those games for Guy Zheng that he will want to forget quickly. Zheng finished the game with a game low +/- of -5. The next highest on his team was only -2 and seeing as Colorado scored 5 goals Zheng was on for all 5 of them while also not helping out on his teams 2 goals. He also took a penalty but thankfully for Zheng the Raptors power play is so bad it might be considered a good strategy to start taking penalties against them. Zheng plays a lot of minutes for the Knights the 3rd most on the team so its understandable that he might have a lower rating in a game they lost by a bit but he can't afford to have many more games like this.

Comment 3:
The face off situation this game was quite an interesting one between these two teams. The Raptors have one of the lower face off %'s in the league, mostly due to the fault of Daniel Smeb's abysmal face off taking skills. This game was no different for Daniel as despite trying to improve at it he somehow did even worse than usual going 2 for 8 on the dot. It was not just however a rough game for Daniel as Konstantin Voloshin Knute Knurtsson also struggled respectively going 5 for 15 and 4 for 10. However thanks to the excellent work of Zivan Zidek going 14 for 24 and the surprise efforts of Parker Smeb who is not a center going 4/4 the face offs were not as one sided as they could have been with Kelowna leading it 36 to 30

Kelowna Knights run over by Colorado Raptors after blewing a 2-0 lead. Kelowna's defense started the game strong allowing the opponent only 3 shots on net in the first period. Justin Siddals put the home team on a 1-0 lead with his fourth tally of the season. In the second period Kelowna extended their lead to a comfortable 2-0 on a goal by Zach Laliberte, with also his fourth of the season. Then suddenly the game completely went in an other direction. after Colorado changed its pace. Five unanswered goals by Colorado, including two from Parker Smeb, lead to a 2-5 end result on the scoreboard.

My player spotlight of today is Justin Siddals of the Kelowna Knights. The center from Prince George, British Colombia, is the oldest player on the Knight's roster. He is playing in his 5th and last season in the SMHJL. He was drafted 4th overall by Detroit Falcons in the S41 SMJHL Entry Draft, but never exceeded expectation. Currently he is a bottom-liner, getting only 11% of playing time, but in this game we did see a rare outburst in offensive. He was part of both Kelowna's goals. He scored the first goal of the game and added an assist to put his total to 7 points.

Comment #1:
Colorado really needed this win sorely, and their offense came to life finally. Parker Smeb has really come into his own this season, tallying 2 goals this game to bring his total up to an impressive 10 on the season. The rest of the Smeb brothers haven't really made their mark on the Raptors roster so far this season. Parker Smeb has been different, though, bringing really impressive energy on the 3rd line for the Raptors. Smeb's goal with the Raptors down 2-0 early in the 2nd period was really crucial. It was a huge momentum swing for the Raptors and a clutch goal straight away after conceding.

Comment #2:
The Kelowna Knights removed starting goalie Vivian LeBlanc in the middle of the game. The change happened after the Colorado Raptors had scored 4 consecutive, unanswered goals. The Knights had taken a 2-0 lead early on in the game in the 2nd period, but clearly LeBlanc had lost his focus at some point and the Knights felt comfortable making a change in net to ignite a potential comeback. Low Temp entered the game early in the 3rd period after LeBlanc gave up 2 goals in less than 30 seconds in the early 3rd period. Low Temp would concede a goal just a few minutes later, but otherwise made several key saves in the rest of the game to at least keep the scoreline respectable for the Knights.

Comment #3:
Michael Scarn's minutes continue to dwindle for the Colorado Raptors. Removed out of the center position and shunted out to the wing, the rookie has struggled to acclimate to the professional pace of play and physicality. Moreover, his shots just aren't landing on net, as he fired another 4 shots at net with none finding the target past the goalie's equipment. Scarn still does get time on the Power Play, but you wonder if Colorado management might switch him out soon enough with the secret agent struggling to find his accuracy on his shot. Scarn's minutes on ice in total continue to decrease and it is safe to say that his Rookie of the Year chances are all but dashed.

Smeb report:
Big game for the smebs in this one as Parker is one of the top contributers in the Colorado win. Parker scored two crucial goals in this one and has 10 on the season, one of the highest rookie totals and Parker has really started to heat up as of late. Hopefully his brothers can start to catch up to him as all three of them went scoreless in this game, despite having a combined four shots. Theyve slowly been earning themselves more minutes on this deep raptors team, and look for them to be a staple of the league for the next couple seasons

Game of thrones playerof the game.

With the release of the last season of game of thrones rapidly approaching we have decided to each night name onone player, the game of thrones player of the game. This game we name Nick Brain of the Colorado Raptors "The Hound". He is big, strong and not afraid to throw his weight around. He is not the one to pick a fight with someone but if you go after him, he will not hesitate to drop the gloves and put you back in your place. Playing 12:44 minustes of the game he is a role player and a fan favorite.

Two Goal Leads are the Worst in Hockey
They say two goal leads are the worst in hockey, which may be especially true at the high scoring junior level of play. Tonight the Kelowna Knights would have to agree with them. The Knights started the game strong with a late first period goal from Justin Siddals, and an early 2nd period goal by Zach Laliberte. The Knights enjoyed their lead for only a few minutes before the Raptors clawed their way back into the game with Parker Smeb opening the scoring for the Raptors. With a goal from Konstantin Voloshin moments later, the two goal lead disappeared by the end of the second period, and it wasn't coming back either. The Raptors scored three more in the third, turning the game that once looked like a potential Knights victory into a borderline blowout.

Parker Smeb, Best Smeb?
Parker Smeb has put another game together that will get more votes in the ficitous Most Valuable Smeb, or MVSmeb award. After ending the 1st down 1-0, there's no doubt there were some words exchanged in the locker room, a room that on any given night is approximately 18% Smeb. He rallied his troops from an early deficient with a game defining goal in the 2nd period that was scored at a point where the next goal very well could have determined which team would be victorious. Konstantin Voloshin, mesmerized by Parker Smebs ability to triumph through adversity, took it to heart and scored the tying and ultimately the winning goal. With an insurance goal by Lilie Jacobs shortly after, Parker Smeb decided it was time to finish what he started and scored his second goal of the night.

A Forgetful 3rd Period the Knights
The Knights have been battling with 3rd period demons recently, and tonight adds to the disappointment they experience in the final 20. After seeing their two goal lead evaportate in the 2nd period, the Knights had the opportunity to roar back in the 3rd and take back what they had lost and showed up for in the first place. The Raptors however had other ideas, and proceeded to score two goals in a span of 20 seconds. The Knights made a goalie change in hopes to rally the troups, but the Raptors took advantage of a cold goalie and scored nearly three minutes later. Three goals over a span of less than four minutes proved to be too much for the Knights, as they couldn't manage to put any of their 11 3rd period shots past Yuri Ushakov.

The Insignificantly Significant Player Of The Game..
A ridiculous Wawazat award .. Awarded to the player with less than 7 minutes of ice time that actually registered something positive.
The Third recipient of this trivial achievement..
Is Kelowna Knights Fourth Line Right Wing Zach Laliberte.
Laliberte did play over my original 7 minutes of ice time maximum. But in his 9:05 of premium ice time he was significant in that Laliberte is the first winner of this to have ACTUALLY scored a goal. Yes, it's amazballs ...His stat line shows 3 shots on goal and 1 goal ( the second and final Kelowna goal of the game scored at the 3:54 mark of the Second period.) Laliberte also finished with a +1 (+/-). This was Laliberte's 4th goal of S45, at this pace he might never be eligible for this trinket again. Congrats to Zach Laliberte.

3 Russian Stars of the Game:

Russia : Yuri Ushakov (COL)

The dazzling rookie goaltender stopped all but two of the 26 shots he faced in Colorado’s 5-2 win. Ushakov has been a phenomenal backstop for Colorado’s already-strong defense.

Russia Russia : Anastasia O’Koivu (COL)

The defensive defensewoman showed the only thing that she was good at today - good, gritty, defense. With a very responsible +3 rating for the night and a single shot block, her play isn’t pretty, but it got the job done for Colorado tonight.

Russia Russia Russia : Aleksandr Scherbak (KEL)

The young Russian winger is beginning to come into his own as he grows and develops, with tonight’s effort proving that he’s versatile across the ice. With +1, one shot on goal, and even a face-off win, Scherbak showed a great two-way game.

Turning Point
The turning point of this game is an obvious one, as the Colorado Raptor's winger Parker Smeb lit a fire under his team's ass with his goal at 6:46 of the second period. The Kelowna Knights had been leading 2-0 prior to the goal, but the Raptors would go on to score 4 more goals unanswered - two by Konstantin Volashin, one from Lillie Jacobs, and another from Smeb - in the rest of the game as the Knights were struck dumb - especially by Volashin and Jacobs goals twenty seconds apart at the beginning of the third period. There really was no hope from there out for the Knights.

Leblanc Blanked
Vivian Leblanc has been a middling goalie so far this season, with a winning record of 12-10-2 before this game, but her performance in this game certainly wouldn't show it. Once the Raptors' offence got going in the second period, Leblanc seemed to be out of her depth, and the coach's choice to wait to replace her with Low Temp until the Raptors steamrolled her in the third spelled certain death for the Knights - though Temp allowed a goal shortly after, suggesting that the coach was between a rock and a hard place. The Knights need to be stronger in front of their goalie and hope Leblanc steps up as we head into the postseason.

Zheng Analysis
If there's anyone to blame for the Knights' loss that isn't their goalie situation, one might look to defenceman Guy Zheng. Zheng played over twenty minutes, making his -5 plus/minus slightly unfair to look at but nonetheless damning (Sanyi Kocsis played over 22 minutes and was a -2 while notching an assist). Zheng also took a crucial hooking penalty in the second period - it didn't lead to a powerplay goal, but it diminished the chance for the Knights to get back a sorely needed go-ahead goal before intermission. If I'm the Knights coach, I'm looking hard at the entire team and making sure Zheng sets a better example going forward.

Game Breakdown:

This game was an incredibly close one until the third period. The shots were 15-12 in favor of Kelowna going into the third and the score was even at 2-2, Justin Siddals scored the first goal of the game in the final 5 minutes of the first which was assisted on by Sanyi Kocsis and Nickolas Klaus. Zack Lalibirte scored for the Knights in the second to give them a 2-0 lead before Parker Smeb scored only 3 minutes later for the Raptors which was assisted by Knute Knurtsson. Finally in the second period Konstantin Voloshin scored a beauty at 11:51 assisted by Jacobs and Darrow. The game was over quickly in the third with early goals from Voloshin and Jacobs before Parker Smeb scored to end all hopes of a Kelowna comeback with the final score being 5-2 for the Raptors

Star Rookie:

Parker Smeb had an absolute monster game. Not only did he score 2 goals to go along with 3 shots but he also had a hit and managed to go 4/4 in face-offs even though he's a winger, for comparison his brother Daniel Smeb went 2/8 in face-offs and he's put much more time in practice than Parker has when it comes to working on his face-offs. So far this season it's pretty clear Parker has been the best Smeb and he leads all Smebs in Goals, Points, +/- and Hits. Games like Parker had today have started to become commonplace in the SMJHL.

Three Stars
:

Star 1: Konstantin Voloshin had 2 goals to go along with one shotblock and was an absolutely nuisance to deal with for the Knights, Voloshin has shown flashes of brilliance all season but this was a huge game for him. After the game it came out that Voloshin was playing with an extra long stick all season and was suspended for the rest of the season and one play-off round.

Star 2: Lillie Jacobs had a goal and an assist to go along with 3 shots, 3 hits and one shotblock. There's an argument to be made that Jacobs could've been the number one star.

Star 3: Parker Smeb had another smebulous performance for the Raptors and ended the game with 2 goals, 3 shots and one hit. Parker likely could've been a ROTY contender had he been given the same ice-time as the other ROTY winners.

Lets take a look at the game winning goal by Konstantin Voloshin at 2:06 of the 3rd period. This beauty of a goal, with a lot of individual effort by Voloshin, but the Raptors in the lead for good. It all started with a masterful face-off win by Voloshin. The puck squirted straight to Jean-Pierre Gay's stick who skated it into the opposing zone. There, he fed Voloshin a beautiful saucer pass right on his stick which Voloshin flicked top corner for a beauty of a goal. Voloshin's great work in the face-off circle and the hustle to get past the defenders on the break made this play happen.

Comment 1
Parker Smeb
Parker Smeb with a good performance in tonight's game, I really think he should have been first star of the game. I believe this would have been the first game this season where the young star has been the first star of the game. Parker had 2 goals in only 14 minutes of ice time playing on the third line. Parker keeps putting up these performances with such limited ice-time, I'm very surprised he hasn't been bumped up to the top 6 yet. Either way I think he has a strong case for rookie of the year with so many points in such little ice-time.

Comment 2
Colorado goes into the playoffs on a high.
One of the last games of the season for Colorado before they head into the wild card matchup vs the Lethbridge Lions. They put together a strong performance over a contending team in the Kelowna Knights. Although the team has struggled the second half of the season, mostly due to an awful power play, this win should give them some confidence against the Lions. All three lines are doing well lately, with Daniel Smeb also producing well on the 4th line. I expect these 4 lines to just steam roll the Lethbridge Lions in the first round of the playoffs. I predict the series to be four games to zero, a quick sweep.

Comment 3
Shots Galore
Colorado put up a ton of shots in this game, crazy how they only had 3 total in the first, because after that they put up 9 in the 2nd and an amazing 16 in the 3rd, good for 28 total. They also has 13 that Kelowna blocked, giving them a total of 41 shots towards the net. Kelowna also had a good game in the shots department, putting up a total of 26, although they didn't put up nearly as many shot towards the net. Ushakov had a very strong game stopping all but 2, giving him a .923 save percentage. It's a surprise not to see him named a three star of the game.
