SEASON 45 WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
BRONZE MEDAL GAME
Russia RUSSIA Russia VS. Sweden SWEDEN Sweden

Hello, and welcome ladies and gentlemen to tonight’s dramatic conclusion of the Season 45 World Juniors Championship, the Bronze Medal Game between Sweden and Russia! Earlier today, the World team celebrated its Gold Medal against the Canadians.  The Canadians will go home with silver medal.  There is no consolation prize for the loser of this contest.  The winner joins Team World and Team Canada on the podium.  The loser goes home empty-handed.

The Swedes feature one of the best offenses in the tournament, led by David Fantobens and Hippo Passamus, the dynamic duo of Detroit Falcons who led the round robin phase in scoring. Russia, meanwhile, has found its groove after a slow start to the event, looking to steal a medal after finishing ninth out of the ten teams overall during the round robin.

Puck drop is just moments away. Before we go down to ice level, a look at our starting lineups.

For the Russians, Shaquille Derisraka of the Vancouver Whalers will take the draw against Sweden’s Kristoffer Svensson. The aforementioned Fantobens and Passamus occupy the Swedish wings, while Vladislav Konstantin and Zakhar Turakov join Derisraka on the top Russian forward line.

Both teams utilize two rookies on their top defensive pairs. The Russians will deploy the second-generation players who were just taken with the first two picks of the SMJHL Entry Draft, Nikolai Evans and Anastasia O’Koivu. Sweden will send out Joln DuBolk and Dylan Karlsson.

In net, Aleksi O’Koivu-Volkova, twin brother to Anastasia O’Koivu, will back up the Russian defense, while Eddy Ask, Jr. will stand guard for the Swedes.

Derisraka and Svensson take their places at center ice ... the puck is dropped, Derisraka wins the face-off to Evans, and we are underway.  Russia will take first possession of this contest.  Evans carries the puck himself into the Sweden zone, looks to give it back to Derisraka ... intercepted by Fantobens!

Fantobens coming the other way, he hits Karlsson with an entry pass.  Karlsson gives it back to Fantobens, he now finds Svensson out wide to the right, he’s immediately plastered to the board by O’Koivu!

The puck finds its way to Passamus’ stick, no change of possession, but already both teams setting the tone in this game!

...here’s Borje Wallenberg, recovering a loose puck, he’ll dump it behind the Russian net to get new legs on the ice. Aleksi O’Koivu-Volkova will play it behind his own net, he gives it off to Oleg Scoreov. Scoreov looks up, finds Jerry Mander, the American expatriate. Mander looks to Aleksandr Scherbak ... he loses the puck, Pingy Pingu got a stick on it!

Pingu gives it off to Karlsson, he has thoughts of pushing the puck but Valeri Kolesnikov and O’Koivu have recovered well after the miscue, no numbers. Karlsson lays it off to Tobias Viklund. Viklund begins to cycle the puck, Sweden probing for a weakness here early.

IT’S IN! SWEDEN TAKES A 1-0 LEAD!  TOBIAS VIKLUND STRIKES FIRST!  SWEDEN MAKES RUSSIA PAY FOR THE NEUTRAL ZONE TURNOVER, THEY LEAD 1-0 LESS THAN THREE MINUTES INTO THE BRONZE MEDAL GAME!

...Here’s a faceoff in the Russian zone, to O’Koivu-Volkova’s right after smothering a Fantobens shot attempt, 14:19 remaining in the first period. Fantobens wins it away from Mister McCarty. Again, the methodical Swedish offense working the puck around the zone, Russia struggling in the possession game at the early stage of this contest.

David Fantobens with the puck, part of that deadly combination on the top line, he ... bobbles slightly, but Passamus is there to recover, that chemistry from several seasons together professionally and internationally showing through even when mistakes happen. Passamus finds Emil Olsson in the corner, nothing there, Olsson gives it back above the left circle. Passamus cuts to the middle, he’s got space, a wrister!

...Bodies tangling here in the neutral zone, Evans comes away with the puck for Russia, looking to get something going ... no! Evans loses the puck to Fantobens, he’s been all over the ice tonight. Fantobens pushes it ahead to Svensson, two-on-one! Fantobens fires! Blocked by Kolesnikov!

Stol Skottson comes away with the loose puck, chips at it, but that one also glances off Kolesnikov, Skottson didn’t get all of it. Here’s Passamus again!

Saved by O’Koivu-Volkova! He covers it up to get the faceoff, and that is a big save! Maybe a bit routine in nature, but hopefully for the Russian faithful it will settle that team down after a rocky start.
